Complexes of Formaldehyde and ?-Dicarbonyls with Hydroxylamine: FTIR Matrix Isolation and Theoretical Study.

ABSTRACT: The interactions of formaldehyde (FA), glyoxal (Gly) and methylglyoxal (MGly) with hydroxylamine (HA) isolated in solid argon and nitrogen were studied using FTIR spectroscopy and ab initio methods. The spectra analysis indicates the formation of two types of hydrogen-bonded complexes between carbonyl and hydroxylamine in the studied matrices. The cyclic planar complexes are stabilized by O-H?O(C), and C-H?N interactions and the nonplanar complexes are stabilized by O-H?O(C) bond. Formaldehyde was found to form with hydroxylamine, the cyclic planar complex and methylglyoxal, the nonplanar one in both argon and nitrogen matrices. In turn, glyoxal forms with hydroxylamine the most stable nonplanar complex in solid argon, whereas in solid nitrogen, both types of the complex are formed.

Matrix Isolation FTIR and Theoretical Study of Weakly Bound Complexes of Isocyanic Acid with Nitrogen.

Project description:Weak complexes of isocyanic acid (HNCO) with nitrogen were studied computationally employing MP2, B2PLYPD3 and B3LYPD3 methods and experimentally by FTIR matrix isolation technique. The results show that HNCO interacts specifically with N2. For the 1:1 stoichiometry, three stable minima were located on the potential energy surface. The most stable of them involves a weak, almost linear hydrogen bond from the NH group of the acid molecule to nitrogen molecule lone pair. Two other structures are bound by van der Waals interactions of N⋯N and C⋯N types. The 1:2 and 2:1 HNCO complexes with nitrogen were computationally tracked as well. Similar types of interactions as in the 1:1 complexes were found in the case of the higher stoichiometry complexes. Analysis of the HNCO/N2/Ar spectra after deposition indicates that the 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complex is prevalent in argon matrices with a small amount of the van der Waals structures also present. Deoxygenative α-alkylation and α-arylation of 1,2-dicarbonyls.

Project description:Construction of C-C bonds at the α-carbon is a challenging but synthetically indispensable approach to α-branched carbonyl motifs that are widely represented among drugs, natural products, and synthetic intermediates. Here, we describe a simple approach to generation of boron enolates in the absence of strong bases that allows for introduction of both α-alkyl and α-aryl groups in a reaction of readily accessible 1,2-dicarbonyls and organoboranes. Obviation of unselective, strongly basic and nucleophilic reagents permits carrying out the reaction in the presence of electrophiles that intercept the intermediate boron enolates, resulting in two new α-C-C bonds in a tricomponent process.

Hydroxylamine Chemical Digestion for Insoluble Extracellular Matrix Characterization.

Project description:The extracellular matrix (ECM) is readily enriched by decellularizing tissues with nondenaturing detergents to solubilize and deplete the vast majority of cellular components. This approach has been used extensively to generate ECM scaffolds for regenerative medicine technologies and in 3D cell culture to model how the ECM contributes to disease progression. A highly enriched ECM fraction can then be generated using a strong chaotrope buffer that is compatible with downstream bottom-up proteomic analysis or 3D cell culture experiments after extensive dialysis. With most tissues, an insoluble pellet remains after chaotrope extraction that is rich in structural ECM components. Previously, we showed that this understudied fraction represented approximately 80% of total fibrillar collagen from the lung and other ECM fiber components that are known to be covalently cross-linked. Here, we present a hydroxylamine digestion approach for chaotrope-insoluble ECM analysis with comparison to an established CNBr method for matrisome characterization. Because ECM characteristics vary widely among tissues, we chose five tissues that represent unique and diverse ECM abundances, composition, and biomechanical properties. Hydroxylamine digestion is compatible with downstream proteomic workflows, yields high levels of ECM peptides from the insoluble ECM fraction, and reduces analytical variability when compared to CNBr digestion. A theoretical study of formaldehyde adsorption and decomposition on a WC (0001) surface.

Project description:A lot of research attention has been paid to designing and exploring efficient adsorbents for HCHO adsorption and decomposition. Herein, we have demonstrated a highly active material, WC, for HCHO adsorption through first-principles calculations. Due to the exposed three-coordinated W atoms (W3c) of the WC (0001) surface, HCHO molecules can be settled on the WC (0001) surface through newly formed OF-W3c and/or CF-W3c bonds, forming different adsorption configurations. When settled on the WC (0001) surface, the molecular configuration of the HCHO molecule and the corresponding CF-HF and CF-OF bond lengths would be greatly changed. Due to the enlarged CF-HF and CF-OF bond lengths, the adsorbed HCHO molecules tend to dissociate through two possible pathways; these are the two-step CF-HF bond scission or the one-step CF-OF bond scission. The former results in two H adatoms and a CO molecule chemisorbed to the surface and the latter produces an O adatom and a CH2 group on the surface. Further Cl-NEB calculations demonstrate that the pre-adsorbed O atom has little influence on the first CF-HF bond scission and the CF-OF bond scission, while promoting the second CF-HF bond scission. Considering the dissociative products, H and CH2 have the potential to couple into a CH3 group (or even a CH4 molecule) and two CH2 groups may couple into a C2H4 molecule. In the end, we propose that OH ions may couple with the dissociative products of HCHO, so an alkali solution could be used to post-process the WC (0001) surface to restore its surface active sites. These results demonstrated the potential of WC in HCHO sensing and abatement.

Theoretical Study of Actinide Complexes with Macropa.

Project description:The complex formation of actinium (Ac3+) and californium (Cf3+) ions with macropa (a promising ligand for medical applications, e.g., in targeted α therapy) has been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work is focused on the structural and bonding properties, the latter on the basis of charge transfer data and topological properties of the electron density distribution. The effect of water solvent on the energetics has been investigated using the SMD model. A comparative analysis with the related properties of two representative lanthanide (La, Lu) complexes has been performed.

Theoretical Study of Actinide(III)-DOTA Complexes.

Project description:1,4,7,10-Tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N″,N‴-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) is a prominent chelating ligand used in imaging contrast agents and radiopharmaceuticals. The present study explores the stabilities, structures, and bonding properties of its complexes with trivalent actinides (Ac, U, Np, Pu, Am, Cm, Cf) using density functional theory and relativistic multireference calculations. For reference purposes, the La- and Lu-DOTA complexes are also included. Similar to La3+, the large An3+ ions prefer the TSAP conformer of the ligand. The An-ligand bonding is mainly electrostatic, with minor charge transfer contributions to the An 6d orbitals. For the assessment of the thermodynamic stabilities in aqueous solution, PCM radii to use in conjunction with the SMD solvation model were developed. Basically, the thermodynamic stability of the DOTA complexes increases along the An row but with notable counteracting of spin-orbit coupling.

Experimental FTIR-MI and Theoretical Studies of Isocyanic Acid Aggregates.

Project description:Homoaggregates of isocyanic acid (HNCO) were studied using FTIR spectroscopy combined with a low-temperature matrix isolation technique and quantum chemical calculations. Computationally, the structures of the HNCO dimers and trimers were optimized at the MP2, B3LYPD3 and B2PLYPD3 levels of theory employing the 6-311++G(3df,3pd) basis set. Topological analysis of the electron density (AIM) was used to identify the type of non-covalent interactions in the studied aggregates. Five stable minima were located on the potential energy surface for (HNCO)2, and nine were located on the potential energy surface for (HNCO)3. The most stable dimer (D1) involves a weak, almost linear N-H⋯N hydrogen bond. Other structures are bound by a N-H⋯O hydrogen bond or by O⋯C or N⋯N van der Waals interactions. Similar types of interactions as in (HNCO)2 were found in the case of HNCO trimers. Among nine stable (HNCO)3 structures, five represent cyclic forms. The most stable T1 trimer structure is characterized by a six-membered ring formed by three N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds and representing high symmetry (C3h). The analysis of the HNCO/Ar spectra after deposition indicates that the N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonded dimers are especially prevalent. Upon annealing, HNCO trimers were observed as well. Identification of the experimentally observed species relied on previous experimental data on HNCO complexes as well as computed data on HNCO homoaggregates' vibrational spectra.

Identification of the early intermediates formed in ozonolysis of <i>cis</i>-2-butene and limonene: a theoretical and matrix isolation study.

Project description:This study combined quantum chemical calculations and the matrix isolation technique to identify the formation of primary intermediates from the ozonolysis of cis-2-butene and limonene. Quantum chemical calculations were conducted under the framework of density functional theory (DFT) at M06-2x/6-311+(d, p) level of theory to predict the possible mechanism as well as the new absorption bands. New bands whose intensity increased with annealing, were observed in twin jet deposition, which indicated the formation of primary ozonides, CI and secondary ozonides in the investigated systems. Isotopic labeling (18O) experiments further supported the assignment of observed bands. The results and findings in this study would enrich the understanding of the reaction mechanism of alkene ozonolysis.

Theoretical Study of the Iron Complexes with Aminoguanidine: Investigating Secondary Antioxidant Activity.

Project description:A thorough analysis of the thermodynamic stability of various complexes of aminoguanidine (AG) with Fe(III) at a physiological pH is presented. Moreover, the secondary antioxidant activity of AG is studied with respect to its kinetic role in the Fe(III) reduction to Fe(II) when reacting with the superoxide radical anion or ascorbate. Calculations are performed at the M05(SMD)/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory. Solvent effects (water) are taken into account in both geometry optimizations and frequency calculations employing the SMD solvation method. Even though the results of this study show that AG can form an extensive number of stable complexes with Fe(III), none of these can reduce the rate constant of the initial step of the Haber-Weiss cycle when the reducing agent is O2•-. However, when the reductant is the ascorbate anion, AG is capable of reducing the rate constant of this reaction significantly, to the point of inhibiting the production of •OH radicals. In fact, the most stable complex of Fe(III) with AG, having a ?Gf° of -37.9 kcal/mol, can reduce the rate constant of this reaction by 7.9 × 105 times. Thus, AG possesses secondary antioxidant activity relative to the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reduction with ascorbate, but not with O2•-. Similar results have also been found for AG relative to the Cu(II)/Cu(I) reduction, in agreement with experimental results.
