Project description:Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters-just like phosphorescent ones-can in principle allow for 100% internal quantum efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), because the initially formed electron-hole pairs in the non-emissive triplet state can be efficiently converted into emissive singlets by reverse intersystem crossing. However, as compared to phosphorescent emitter complexes with their bulky-often close to spherical-molecular structures, TADF emitters offer the advantage to align them such that their optical transition dipole moments (TDMs) lie preferentially in the film plane. In this report, we address the question which factors control the orientation of TADF emitters. Specifically, we discuss how guest-host interactions may be used to influence this parameter and propose an interplay of different factors being responsible. We infer that emitter orientation is mainly governed by the molecular shape of the TADF molecule itself and by the physical properties of the host-foremost, its glass transition temperature Tg and its tendency for alignment being expressed, e.g., as birefringence or the formation of a giant surface potential of the host. Electrostatic dipole-dipole interactions between host and emitter are not found to play an important role.

Project description:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) compounds are highly attractive as sensitizing and emitting materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The efficiency of the OLED depends on multiple parameters, most of which rely on the properties of the emitter including those that govern the internal quantum and outcoupling efficiencies. Herein, we investigate a series of aryl substituted acridine donor derivatives of the donor-acceptor TADF emitter DMAC-TRZ, with the objective of correlating their properties, such as triplet harvesting efficiency and transition dipole moment orientation, with their corresponding device efficiency. The decoration of the DMAC donor with substituted aryl groups not only modifies the molecular weight and length of the emitter but also affects the emission color and the capacity for the emitters to efficiently harvest triplet excitons. The presence of electron-withdrawing 4-cyanophenyl and 4-trifluoromethylphenyl groups in, respectively, CNPh-DMAC-TRZ and CF3Ph-DMAC-TRZ, blue-shifts the emission spectrum but slows down the reverse intersystem crossing rate constant (kRISC), while the opposite occurs in the presence of electron-donating groups in t BuPh-DMAC-TRZ and OMePh-DMAC-TRZ (red-shifted emission spectrum and faster kRISC). In contrast to our expectations, the OLED performance of the five DMAC-TRZ derivatives does not scale with their degree of horizontal emitter orientation but follows the kRISC rates. This, in turn, demonstrates that triplet harvesting (and not horizontal emitter orientation) is the dominant effect for device efficiency using this family of emitters. Nonetheless, highly efficient OLEDs were fabricated with t BuPh-DMAC-TRZ and OMePh-DMAC-TRZ as emitters, with improved EQEmax (∼28%) compared to the reference DMAC-TRZ devices.

Project description:Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a concept which helps to harvest triplet excitations, boosting the efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode. TADF can be observed in molecules with spatially separated donor and acceptor groups with a reduced triplet-singlet energy level splitting. TADF materials with balanced electron and hole transport are attractive for realizing efficient single-layer organic light emitting diodes, greatly simplifying their manufacturing and improving their stability. Our goal here is to computationally screen such materials and provide a comprehensive database of compounds with a range of emission wavelengths, ionization energies, and electron affinities.

Project description:New thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) blue emitter molecules based on the known donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D)-type TADF molecule, 2,7-bis(9,9-dimethylacridin-10-yl)-9,9-dimethylthioxanthene-S,S-dioxide (DDMA-TXO2), are reported. The motivation for the present investigation is via the use of rational molecular design, based on DDMA-TXO2, to elevate the organic light emitting diode (OLED) performance and obtain deeper blue color coordinates. To achieve this goal, the strength of the donor (D) unit and acceptor (A) units have been tuned with methyl substituents. The methyl functionality on the acceptor was also expected to modulate the D-A torsion angle in order to obtain a blue shift in the electroluminescence. The effect of regioisomeric structures has also been investigated. Herein, we report the photophysical, electrochemical, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography data to assist with the successful OLED design. The methyl substituents on the DDMA-TXO2 framework have profound effects on the photophysics and color coordinates of the emitters. The weak electron-donating methyl groups alter the redox properties of the D and A units and consequently affect the singlet and triplet levels but not the energy gap (ΔEST). By systematically manipulating all of the aforementioned factors, devices have been obtained with acceptor-substituted III with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 22.6% and Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage coordinates of (0.15, 0.18) at 1000 cd m-2.

Project description:Understanding the excited-state dynamics and conformational relaxation in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules, including conformations that potentially support intramolecular through-space charge transfer, can open new avenues for TADF molecular design as well as elucidate complex photophysical pathways in structurally complex molecules. Emissive molecules comprising a donor (triphenylamine, TPA) and an acceptor (triphenyltriazine, TRZ) bridged by a second donor (9,9-dimethyl-9-10-dihydroacridin, DMAC, or phenoxazine, PXZ) are synthesized and characterized. In solution, the flexibility of the sp3-hybridized carbon atom in DMAC of DMAC-TPA-TRZ, compared to the rigid PXZ, allows significant conformational reorganization, giving rise to multiple charge-transfer excited states. As a result of such a reorganization, the TRZ and TPA moieties become cofacially aligned, driven by a strong dipole-dipole attraction between the TPA and TRZ units, forming a weakly charge-transfer dimer state, in stark contrast to the case of PXZ-TPA-TRZ where the rigid PXZ bridge only supports a single PXZ-TRZ charge transfer (CT) state. The low-energy TPA-TRZ dimer is found to have a high-energy dimer local triplet state, which quenches delayed emission because the resultant singlet CT local triplet energy gap is too large to mediate efficient reverse intersystem crossing. However, organic light-emitting diodes using PXZ-TPA-TRZ as an emitting dopant resulted in external quantum efficiency as high as 22%, more than two times higher than that of DMAC-TPA-TRZ-based device, showing the impact that such intramolecular reorganization and donor-acceptor dimerization have on TADF performance.

Project description:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials are commonly used in various apparatus, including organic light-emitting device-based displays, as they remarkably improve the internal quantum efficiencies. Although there is a wide range of donor-acceptor-based compounds possessing TADF properties, in this computational study, we investigated TADF and some non-TADF chromophores, containing benzophenone or its structural derivatives as the acceptor core, together with various donor moieties. Following the computational modeling of the emitters, several excited state properties, such as the absorption spectra, singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔEST), natural transition orbitals, and the topological ΦS indices, have been computed. Along with the donor-acceptor torsion angles and spin-orbit coupling values, these descriptors have been utilized to investigate potential TADF efficiency. Our study has shown that on the one hand, our photophysical/structural descriptors and computational methodologies predict the experimental results quite well, and on the other hand, our extensive benchmark can be useful to pinpoint the most promising functionals and descriptors for the study of benzophenone-based TADF emitters.

Project description:Metal-free organic emitters with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics are emerging due to the potential applications in optoelectronic devices, time-resolved luminescence imaging, and solid-phase sensing. Herein, we synthesized two (4-bromobenzoyl)pyridine (BPy)-based donor–acceptor (D–A) compounds with varying donor size and strength: the emitter BPy-pTC with tert-butylcarbazole (TC) as the donor and BPy-p3C with bulky tricarbazole (3C) as the donor unit. Both BPy-pTC and BPy-p3C exhibited prominent emission with TADF properties in solution and in the solid phase. The stronger excited-state charge transfer was obtained for BPy-p3C due to the bulkier donor, leading to a more twisted D–A geometry than that of BPy-pTC. Hence, BPy-p3C exhibited aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) in a THF/water mixture. Interestingly, the singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEST) was reduced for both compounds in the aggregated state as compared to toluene solution. Consequently, a faster reverse intersystem crossing rate (kRISC) was obtained in the aggregated state, facilitating photon upconversion, leading to enhanced delayed fluorescence. Further, the lone-pair electrons of the pyridinyl nitrogen atom were found to be sensitive to acidic protons. Hence, the exposure to acid and base vapors using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and triethylamine (TEA) led to solid-phase fluorescence switching with fatigue resistance. The current study demonstrates the role of the donor strength and size in tuning ΔEST in the aggregated state as well as the relevance for fluorescence-based acid–base sensing.

Project description:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a highly temperature-dependent process and can be used in optical thermometry. TADF-based optical thermometers reported so far show fairly high-temperature sensitivity but have poor brightness and significant oxygen cross-talk. A new class of TADF emitters, Zn(II) Schiff base complexes, possess excellent brightness and high temperature sensitivity of the decay time at ambient temperature (4.1%/K change of TADF lifetime at 25 °C), enabling a resolution better than 0.03 °C. Oxygen cross-sensitivity is eliminated by covering the sensing layer (luminophore in polystyrene) with an off-stoichiometry thiol-ene polymer as an oxygen-consuming layer, and a poly(vinylidene chloride-co-acrylonitrile) layer as an oxygen barrier. The material is stable after more than 2 months of storage at ambient air, which enables long-term temperature monitoring.

Project description:We report the impact of boron acceptors on the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties of ortho-donor-appended triarylboron compounds. Different boryl acceptor moieties, such as 9-boraanthryl (1), 10H-phenoxaboryl (2), and dimesitylboryl (BMes2, 3) groups have been introduced into an ortho donor (D)-acceptor (A) backbone structure containing a 9,9-diphenylacridine (DPAC) donor. X-ray crystal diffraction and NMR spectroscopy evidence the presence of steric congestion around the boron atom along with a highly twisted D-A structure. A short contact of 2.906 Å between the N and B atoms, which is indicative of an N → B nonbonding electronic interaction, is observed in the crystal structure of 2. All compounds are highly emissive (PLQYs = 90-99%) and display strong TADF properties in both solution and solid state. The fluorescence bands of cyclic boryl-containing 1 and 2 are substantially blue-shifted compared to that of BMes2-containing 3. In particular, the PL emission bandwidths of 1 and 2 are narrower than that of 3. High-efficiency TADF-OLEDs are realized using 1-3 as emitters. Among them, the devices based on the cyclic boryl emitters exhibit pure blue electroluminescence (EL) and narrower EL bands than the device with 3. Furthermore, the device fabricated with emitter 1 achieves a high external quantum efficiency of 25.8%.
