A Simple Turn-off Schiff Base Fluorescent Sensor for Copper (II) Ion and Its Application in Water Analysis.

ABSTRACT: An aniline-functionalized naphthalene dialdehyde Schiff base fluorescent probe L with aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) characteristics was synthesized via a simple one-step condensation reaction and exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards copper(II) ions in aqueous media with a fluorescence " turn-off " phenomenon. The detection limit of the probe is 1.64 × 10-8 mol·L-1. Furthermore, according to the results of the UV-vis/fluorescence titrations, Job's plot method and 1H-NMR titrations, a 1:2 stoichiometry was identified. The binding constant between L and Cu2+ was calculated to be Ka = 1.222 × 103. In addition, the AIEE fluorescent probe L could be applied to detection in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range 99.10-102.90% in lake water and 98.49-102.37% in tap water.

Project description:In this work, a novel sensor, (E)-N'-(3-(tert-butyl)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)thiophene-2-carbohydrazide (1), based on salicylaldehyde and thiophene hydrazide moieties was designed and synthesized. The single-crystal structure of 1 was achieved and studied for understanding its functional properties. The interaction and recognition abilities of 1 with different metal ions were investigated. Sensor 1 showed excellent "turn-on" fluorescence with highly selective and specific recognition ability in the presence of gallium ions (Ga3+) in an aqueous solution. The sensing behavior of 1 with Ga3+ was also studied by photophysical experiments, ESI-MS analysis, and 1H NMR titration. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1 for the detection of Ga3+ in an aqueous solution were calculated as 58 nM, and 192 nM, respectively. DFT calculations were carried out to optimize the configuration of 1 and 1-Ga3+ complexes and rationalize the photophysical experimental data. Highly selective test strips based on sensor 1 were developed for Ga3+ detection. Sensor 1 was also used to detect Ga3+ in actual water samples, and a considerable recovery rate was obtained.

A selective turn-on fluorescent sensor for imaging copper in living cells.

Project description:We present the synthesis, properties, and biological applications of Coppersensor-1 (CS1), a new water-soluble, turn-on fluorescent sensor for intracellular imaging of copper in living biological samples. CS1 utilizes a BODIPY reporter and thioether-rich receptor to provide high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu+ over other biologically relevant metal ions, including Cu2+, in aqueous solution. This BODIPY-based probe is the first Cu+-responsive sensor with visible excitation and emission profiles and gives a 10-fold turn-on response for detecting this ion. Confocal microscopy experiments further establish that CS1 is membrane-permeable and can successfully monitor intracellular Cu+ levels within living cells.

A New, Extremely Sensitive, Turn-Off Optical Sensor Utilizing Schiff Base for Fast Detection of Cu(II).

Project description:Throughout this research, a unique optical sensor for detecting one of the most dangerous heavy metal ions, Cu(II), was designed and developed. The (4-mercaptophenyl) iminomethylphenyl naphthalenyl carbamate (MNC) sensor probe was effectively prepared. The Schiff base of the sensor shows a "turn-off" state with excellent sensitivity to Cu(II) ions. This innovative fluorescent chemosensor possesses distinctive optical features with a substantial Stocks shift (about 114 nm). In addition, MNC has remarkable selectivity for Cu(II) relative to other cations. Density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) theoretical calculations were performed to examine Cu(II) chelation structures and associated electronic properties in solution, and the results indicate that the luminescence quenching in this complex is due to ICT. Chelation-quenched fluorescence is responsible for the internal charge transfer (ICT)-based selectivity of the MNC sensing molecule for Cu(II) ions. In a 1:9 (v/v) DMSO-HEPES buffer (20 mM, pH = 7.4) solution, Fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption of the MNC probe and Cu(II) ions were investigated. By utilizing a solution containing several metal ions, the interference of other metal ions was studied. This MNC molecule has outstanding selectivity and sensitivity, as well as a low LOD (1.45 nM). Consequently, these distinctive properties enable it to find the copper metal ions across an actual narrow dynamic range (0-1.2 M Cu(II)). The reversibility of the sensor was obtained by employing an EDTA as a powerful chelating agent.

A Turn-On Fluorescent Chemosensor for Cyanide Ion Detection in Real Water Samples

Project description:We have designed and synthesized a novel simple colorimetric fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Probe 5-(4-(diphenylamine)phenyl) thiophen-2-formaldehyde W exhibited a turn-on fluorescent response to cyanide ion (CN−), which induces distinct visual color changes. Probe W exhibited a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence response for the detection of CN− over a wide pH range (4–11) and in the presence of common interferents. The linear detection of CN− over the concentration range of 4.00–38.00 µM (R2 = 0.9916, RSD = 0.02) was monitored by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry (UV-Vis) with the limit of detection determined to be 0.48 µM. The linear detection of CN− over the concentration range of 8.00–38.00 µM was examined by fluorescence spectrophotometry (R2 = 0.99086, RSD = 0.031), and the detection limit was found to be 68.00 nM. The sensing mechanisms were confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and HRMS. Importantly, probe W was found to show rapid response, high selectivity, and sensitivity for cyanide anions in real water samples, over the range of 100.17∼100.86% in artificial lake water and 100.54∼101.64% in running water by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry, and over the range of 99.42∼100.71% in artificial lake water and 100.59∼101.17% in running water by fluorescence spectrophotometry. Importantly, this work provides a simple and effective approach which uses an economically cheap and uncomplicated synthetic route for the selective, sensitive, and quantitative detection of CN− ions in systems relevant to the environment and health.

Origin of Water-Induced Fluorescence Turn-On from a Schiff Base Compound: AIE or H-Bonding Promoted ESIPT?

Project description:A nonfluorescent Schiff base compound (4) in an aprotic solvent (e.g., CH3CN) is found to give blue fluorescence turn-on (?em ? 475 nm) upon addition of H2O. By using a wide range of spectroscopic methods, including (1)H NMR and dynamic light scattering, the fluorescence response is shown to be not originating from the molecular aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Spectroscopic studies at low temperatures further reveal a dynamic response of 4 to temperature, showing that the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) can be ON or OFF through interaction with protic solvent. In the binary solvent (with composition CH3CN/H2O = 3:1), the Schiff base gives ESIPT emission (?em ? 524 nm) only at extremely low temperature (below -80 °C), which is turned off when being warmed to -60 °C, attributing to the increasing photoinduced electron transfer (PET) effect. When the temperature is further raised to -20 °C, ESIPT emission is reactivated to give blue emission (?em ? 475 nm) that is observed at room temperature. The observed dynamic fluorescence response reveals that ESIPT could be a predominant mechanism in the fluorescence turn-on of Schiff base compounds, although both AIE and ESIPT mechanisms could operate. The assumption is further verified by examining the response of Schiff base to Al(3+) cation.

Water-Soluble Sulfonate Schiff-Base Ligands as Fluorescent Detectors for Metal Ions in Drinking Water and Biological Systems.

Project description:The ability to detect and selectively identify trace amounts of metal ions is of major importance for drinking water identification and biological studies. Herein, we report a series of water-soluble Schiff-base ligands capable of being fluorescent and colorimetric sensors for metal ions. Upon coordination of the metal ion to the ligand, quenching of fluorescence is observed, typically in a 1:1 ratio. The selectivity of metal ions Cu2+, Ni2+, Cr3+, and Co2+ is exhibited via fluorescence quenching accompanied by colorimetric changes, whereas that of Ag+ and Co2+ is observed through colorimetric changes alone. Additionally, pH sensing studies were performed for the potential use of these ligands in biological applications.

A quinazolin-based Schiff-base chemosensor for colorimetric detection of Ni2+ and Zn2+ ions and 'turn-on' fluorometric detection of Zn2+ ion.

Project description:Herein, we have reported a novel quinazolin-based Schiff base chemosensor (E)-2-benzamido-N'-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide (L). L has been designed, synthesised and characterised by 1H-NMR, IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS spectrometry and theoretical studies. The receptor showed appreciable colorimetric λmax shift for both Ni2+ and Zn2+ ions and fluorometric "turn on" response in presence of only Zn2+ ion. The Jobs plot analysis revealed that receptor forms 2 : 1 complex with both the ions Ni2+ and Zn2+, further confirmed by ESI-MS analysis. The single crystal structure of L-Ni2+ complex (1) has also been determined. The colorimetric detection limits were calculated to 7.9 nM and 7.5 nM respectively for Ni2+ and Zn2+ in methanol-Tris-HCl buffer medium (10 mM, pH 7.2, 1 : 1 v/v). The chemosensor L can be applied for the recovery of contaminated water samples.

A Simple Sensitive ESIPT On-Off Fluorescent Sensor for Selective Detection of Al3+ in Water.

Project description:A highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for Al3+ has been developed. The sensor shows great fluorescence turn-on upon binding Al3+ in complete water, giving strong blue emission. In addition, the sensor's turn-on exhibits excellent selectivity to Al3+ cation, with only a slight interference from Zn2+. These findings suggest that the developed Al3+ sensor could be a useful molecular probe for practical applications.
