Interferometric measurements of refractive index and dispersion at high pressure.

ABSTRACT: We describe a high precision interferometer system to measure the pressure dependence of the refractive index and its dispersion in the diamond anvil cell (DAC). The reflective Fabry-Perot fringe patterns created by both a white light and a monochromatic beam are recorded to determine both the sample thickness and its index at the laser wavelength and to characterize the dispersion in the visible range. Advances in sample preparation, optical setup, and data analysis enable us to achieve [Formula: see text] random uncertainty, demonstrated with an air sample, a factor of five improvement over the best previous DAC measurement. New data on [Formula: see text] liquid water and ice VI up to 2.21 GPa at room temperature illustrate how higher precision measurements of the index and its optical dispersion open up new opportunities to reveal subtle changes in the electronic structure of water at high pressure.

Interferometric spectroscopy of scattered light can quantify the statistics of subdiffractional refractive-index fluctuations.

Project description:Despite major importance in physics, biology, and other sciences, the optical sensing of nanoscale structures in the far zone remains an open problem due to the fundamental diffraction limit of resolution. We establish that the expected value of spectral variance (Σ[over ˜](2)) of a far-field, diffraction-limited microscope image can quantify the refractive-index fluctuations of a label-free, weakly scattering sample at subdiffraction length scales. We report the general expression of Σ[over ˜] for an arbitrary refractive-index distribution. For an exponential refractive-index spatial correlation, we obtain a closed-form solution of Σ[over ˜] that is in excellent agreement with three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain solutions of Maxwell's equations. Sensing complex inhomogeneous media at the nanoscale can benefit fields from material science to medical diagnostics.

Towards non-blind optical tweezing by finding 3D refractive index changes through off-focus interferometric tracking.

Project description:In modern 3D microscopy, holding and orienting arbitrary biological objects with optical forces instead of using coverslips and gel cylinders is still a vision. Although optical trapping forces are strong enough and related photodamage is acceptable, the precise (re-) orientation of large specimen with multiple optical traps is difficult, since they grab blindly at the object and often slip off. Here, we present an approach to localize and track regions with increased refractive index using several holographic optical traps with a single camera in an off-focus position. We estimate the 3D grabbing positions around several trapping foci in parallel through analysis of the beam deformations, which are continuously measured by defocused camera images of cellular structures inside cell clusters. Although non-blind optical trapping is still a vision, this is an important step towards fully computer-controlled orientation and feature-optimized laser scanning of sub-mm sized biological specimen for future 3D light microscopy.

A Photonic crystal fiber with large effective refractive index separation and low dispersion.

Project description:A photonic crystal fiber (PCF) structure with a ring-core and 5 well-ordered semiellipse air-holes has been creatively proposed. Through a comparison between the structures with a high refractive index (RI) ring-core and the structure without, it conclude that a PCF with a high RI ring-core can work better. Schott SF57 was elected as the substrate material of ring-core. This paper compares the effects of long-axis and short-axis changes on the PCF and selects the optimal solution. Especially TE0,1 mode's dispersion is maintained between 0 and 3 ps / (nm · km) ranging from 1.45 μm to 1.65 μm. This property can be used to generate a supercontinuum with 200 μm long zero dispersion wavelength (ZDM). In addition, Δneff reaches up to 10-3, which enables the near -degeneracy of the eigenmodes to be almost neglected. The proposed PCF structure will have great application value in the field of optical communications.

Denaturation process of laccase in various media by refractive index measurements.

Project description:In this work, we are interested in the denaturation process of a laccase from Tramates versicolor via the determination of the refractive index, the refractive index increment and the specific volume in various media. The measurements were carried out using an Abbe refractometer. We have shown that the refractive index increment values obtained from the slope of the variation of the refractive index vs. Concentration are outside the range refractive index increments of proteins. To correct the results, we have followed the theoretical predictions based on the knowledge of the protein refractive index from its amino acids composition. The denaturation process was studied by calculating the specific volume variation where its determination was related to the Gladstone-Dale and the Lorentz-Lorentz models.

Unravelling interrelations between chemical composition and refractive index dispersion of infrared-transmitting chalcogenide glasses.

Project description:A facile procedure for compositional screening of chalcogenide glass (CG) is proposed to manage its infrared transmission edge (ωc) as well as refractive index dispersion (ν) in the long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) range. Both ωc and ν of CG turn out to be interpretable simply in connection with its chemical composition based on a postulation that CG behaves as a single average harmonic oscillator (SAHO). In this SAHO model, ωc is expressed as a function of molar mass and average bond energy, both of which are easily accessible for a given CG composition. Two prototypical CG-forming systems in Ge-Sb-Se and Ge-Sb-S compositions exemplify the empirical compositional dependence of ωc, which further plays a decisive role in determining ν. Following the present approach, a set of highly dispersive CG compositions in the Ge-Sb-S system is newly unveiled together with low-dispersion Ge-Sb-Se glasses. It is then experimentally demonstrated that a doublet lens configuration consisting of convex and concave lenses with low and high ν values, respectively, is able to reduce the optical aberrations. This finding presents an opportunity that ν can be envisaged just based on the compositional ratio of CG, thus facilitating completion of the LWIR Abbe diagram.

Full Polarization Conical Dispersion and Zero-Refractive-Index in Two-Dimensional Photonic Hypercrystals.

Project description:Photonic conical dispersion has been found in either transverse magnetic or transverse electric polarization, and the predominant zero-refractive-index behavior in a two-dimensional photonic crystal is polarization-dependent. Here, we show that two-dimensional photonic hypercrystals can be designed that exhibit polarization independent conical dispersion at the Brillouin zone center, as two sets of triply-degenerate point for each polarization are accidentally at the same Dirac frequency. Such photonic hypercrystals consist of periodic dielectric cylinders embedded in elliptic metamaterials, and can be viewed as full-polarized near zero-refractive-index materials around Dirac frequency by using average eigen-field evaluation. Numerical simulations including directional emissions and invisibility cloak are employed to further demonstrate the double-zero-index characteristics for both polarizations in the photonic hypercrystals.

Strong coupling of single quantum dots with low-refractive-index/high-refractive-index materials at room temperature.

Project description:Strong coupling between a cavity and transition dipole moments in emitters leads to vacuum Rabi splitting. Researchers have not reported strong coupling between a single emitter and a dielectric cavity at room temperature until now. In this study, we investigated the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of colloidal quantum dots on the surface of a SiO2/Si material at various collection angles at room temperature. We measured the corresponding reflection spectra for the SiO2/Si material and compared them with the PL spectra. We observed PL spectral splitting and regarded it as strong coupling between colloidal quantum dots and the SiO2/Si material. Upper polaritons and lower polaritons exhibited anticrossing behavior. We observed Rabi splitting from single-photon emission in the dielectric cavity at room temperature. Through analysis, we attributed the Rabi splitting to strong coupling between quantum dots and bound states in the continuum in the low-refractive-index/high-refractive-index hybrid material.

Multiplexed, High-Sensitivity Measurements of Antibody Affinity Using Interferometric Reflectance Imaging Sensor.

Project description:Anthrax lethal factor (LF) is one of the enzymatic components of the anthrax toxin responsible for the pathogenic responses of the anthrax disease. The ability to screen multiplexed ligands against LF and subsequently estimate the effective kinetic rates (kon and koff) and complementary binding behavior provides critical information useful in diagnostic and therapeutic development for anthrax. Tools such as biolayer interferometry (BLI) and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) have been developed for this purpose; however, these tools suffer from limitations such as signal jumps when the solution in the chamber is switched or low sensitivity. Here, we present multiplexed antibody affinity measurements obtained by the interferometric reflectance imaging sensor (IRIS), a highly sensitive, label-free optical biosensor, whose stability, simplicity, and imaging modality overcomes many of the limitations of other multiplexed methods. We compare the multiplexed binding results obtained with the IRIS system using two ligands targeting the anthrax lethal factor (LF) against previously published results obtained with more traditional surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which showed consistent results, as well as kinetic information previously unattainable with SPR. Additional exemplary data demonstrating multiplexed binding and the corresponding complementary binding to sequentially injected ligands provides an additional layer of information immediately useful to the researcher.

Temperature-Dependent Anisotropic Refractive Index in β-Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>: Application in Interferometric Thermometers.

Project description:An accurate knowledge of the optical properties of β-Ga2O3 is key to developing the full potential of this oxide for photonics applications. In particular, the dependence of these properties on temperature is still being studied. Optical micro- and nanocavities are promising for a wide range of applications. They can be created within microwires and nanowires via distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR), i.e., periodic patterns of the refractive index in dielectric materials, acting as tunable mirrors. In this work, the effect of temperature on the anisotropic refractive index of β-Ga2O3n(λ,T) was analyzed with ellipsometry in a bulk crystal, and temperature-dependent dispersion relations were obtained, with them being fitted to Sellmeier formalism in the visible range. Micro-photoluminescence (μ-PL) spectroscopy of microcavities that developed within Cr-doped β-Ga2O3 nanowires shows the characteristic thermal shift of red-infrared Fabry-Perot optical resonances when excited with different laser powers. The origin of this shift is mainly related to the variation in the temperature of the refractive index. A comparison of these two experimental results was performed by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, considering the exact morphology of the wires and the temperature-dependent, anisotropic refractive index. The shifts caused by temperature variations observed by μ-PL are similar, though slightly larger than those obtained with FDTD when implementing the n(λ,T) obtained with ellipsometry. The thermo-optic coefficient was calculated.

Designing High-Refractive Index Polymers Using Materials Informatics.

Project description:A machine learning strategy is presented for the rapid discovery of new polymeric materials satisfying multiple desirable properties. Of particular interest is the design of high refractive index polymers. Our in silico approach employs a series of quantitative structure⁻property relationship models that facilitate rapid virtual screening of polymers based on relevant properties such as the refractive index, glass transition and thermal decomposition temperatures, and solubility in standard solvents. Exploration of the chemical space is carried out using an evolutionary algorithm that assembles synthetically tractable monomers from a database of existing fragments. Selected monomer structures that were further evaluated using density functional theory calculations agree well with model predictions.
