Reliability and validity study of the Spanish adaptation of the "Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire" (W-DEQ-A).

ABSTRACT: The Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (W-DEQ-A) is an instrument that evaluates fear of childbirth through the expectations of women in relation to childbirth and their experience during the birth. The objective of this study was to translate the W-DEQ-A into Spanish and analyse its reliability and validity. The study was carried out in two phases: (1) adapting the questionnaire to Spanish and (2) a transversal study in a sample of 273 pregnant women in the Sexual and Reproductive Health centres in the Metropolitan Northern Barcelona in Catalonia (Spain). The psychometric properties were analysed in terms of reliability and construct validity. The confirmatory factorial analysis did not confirm the unidimensionality of the original structure of the WDEQ-A, as happened with the other studies in which it has previously been validated. The result of the exploratory factorial analysis suggests four factors, or dimensions, very similar but not identical to those obtained in other analysis studies of the W-DEQ-A. The Cronbach alpha and the omega scale were also adequate for all the scales and for each of the dimensions. The results of this study confirm the findings of other studies that suggest that the W-DEQ-A is multi-dimensional. In the Spanish version of the W-DEQ-A four dimensions have been identified to explore fear of childbirth in pregnant women. The Spanish version of the WDEQ-A (WDEQ-A-Sp) is reliable and valid for the measurement of fear of childbirth in clinical practice and for use in future research.

Project description:BackgroundNowadays, digital gaming occupies a central position in the entertainment industry where it has developed into a cherished kind of entertainment in markets all over the world. In addition, it provides other sectors with various social and economic benefits. The Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ) is a free, quantitative, and comprehensive self-report measure that was developed to assess the player game experience. Despite having been widely used by many research projects in the past, it has not been adapted into Arabic. Furthermore, several components of the scale proved problematic from a psychometric point of view. Therefore, a modified version of the scale is needed to measure the gaming experience of the Arab population.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to validate and examine the psychometrics of an adapted Arabic version of the GEQ in Tunisia.MethodsA total of 771 volunteer participants completed an online survey, which included an Arabic version of the GEQ, gaming data, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Subjects were randomized in order to complete two phases of the study: exploratory and confirmatory. The exploratory data were acquired from 360 respondents whose mean age was 23.89 (SD 2.29) years. Out of 360 respondents, 111 (30.8%) were female and 249 (69.2%) were male. Confirmatory data were obtained from the remaining 411 subjects whose mean age was 21.94 (SD 1.80) years. Out of 411 subjects, 169 (41.1%) were female and 242 (58.9%) were male.ResultsAfter the elimination of two items, the exploratory and the confirmatory factor analyses provided an adequate factor structure of the Arabic version of the GEQ. In addition, the internal consistency coefficients suggested the reliability of the instrument. Significant differences were revealed for three subcomponents: flow by age (η2=0.013, P=.002), gender (η2=0.007, P=.02), and game type (η2=0.03, P<.001). For competence (η2=0.01, P=.03) and immersion (η2=0.02, P=.01), significant differences were highlighted by the type of game. The discriminant and convergent validities of the instrument were supported by calculating the average variance extracted (AVE) and comparing the square roots of the AVE values to the correlation coefficients, respectively.ConclusionsThe Arabic adapted version of the GEQ is valid and reliable and can be administered to measure the game experience in Arab countries.

Project description:BackgroundThe Functional Independence Measure + Functional Assessment Measure (FIM+FAM) Scale is one of the most widely used instruments to measure functional independence post-stroke, and features many cultural adaptations to various languages.AimThe aim of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of a Spanish cross-cultural adaptation of the FIM+FAM for use in the stroke population.DesignObservational study.SettingOutpatient long-term service of a neurorehabilitation unit.PopulationOne hundred and twenty-two individuals with stroke.MethodsThe functional independence of the participants was assessed with the adapted version of the FIM+FAM. Additionally, the functional, motor and cognitive condition of the participants was assessed with a battery of standardized clinical instruments. Finally, a group of 31 participants out of the total were evaluated a second time with the FIM+FAM by a different evaluator than the one who performed the first evaluation. Internal consistency, inter-rater reliability and convergent validity with other clinical instruments of the adapted version of the FIM+FAM were determined.ResultsThe internal consistency of the adapted version of the FIM+FAM was excellent, as evidenced by Cronbach's α values that exceeded 0.973. The inter-rater reliability was likewise excellent, with correlations above 0.990 in all domains and subscales. Additionally, the convergent validity of the scale adaptation with clinical instruments was variable, with values ranging from 0.264 to 0.983, but consistent with the construct assessed in the different instruments examined.ConclusionsThe internal consistency, inter-rater reliability and convergent validity of the Spanish-adapted version of the FIM+FAM Scale showed excellent reliability and validity of the adaptation, which supports its use to assess functional independence after stroke.Clinical rehabilitation impactAvailability of a valid adaptation for the evaluation of functional independence after stroke in Spanish population.
