Chemical Adsorption Strategy for DMC-MeOH Mixture Separation.

ABSTRACT: The effective separation of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from its methanol mixture through simple, inexpensive and low energy-input method is a promising and challenging field in the process of organic synthesis. Herein, a reversible adsorption strategy through the assistance of superbase and CO2 for DMC/methanol separation at ambient condition was described. The process was demonstrated effectively via the excellent CO2 adsorption efficiency. Notably, the protocol was also suitable to other alcohol (i.e., monohydric alcohol, dihydric alcohol, trihydric alcohol) mixtures. The study provided guidance for potential separation of DMC/alcohol mixture in the scale-up production.

Multi-Evaluating Strategy for Siji-kangbingdu Mixture: Chemical Profiling, Fingerprint Characterization, and Quantitative Analysis.

Project description:Siji-kangbingdu mixture is an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral herbal mixture which is frequently used by doctors to treat upper respiratory infections. It's important to establish an efficient and economical quality-control method to ensure the quality consistency and efficacy stability of Siji-kangbingdu mixture. In this study, an integrated multi-evaluation method was established, sequentially involving UPLC-TripleTOF-MS analysis, UPLC fingerprint analysis, and the quantitative analysis of multi-components using the single-marker (QAMS) method. With one chromatographic condition, a total of 71 compounds were identified by MS and MS/MS information, with a mass error of less than 5 ppm; 49 peaks detected in 254 nm were selected to establish the fingerprint similarity model, and 7 chemical compounds were simultaneously determined, namely, chlorogenic acid, liquiritin, rutin, isochlorogenic acid A, forsythin, forsythoside A, and glycyrrhizic acid, with forsythoside A as the reference standard. There was no significant difference in the content of the seven compounds between the QAMS method and the external standard method (ESM). The established multi-evaluation method will largely promote the quality control and standardization process of Siji-kangbingdu mixture. It also provides a reference workflow for the overall evaluation of TCM patent medicines, from chemical profiling to fingerprint and quantitative analysis.

Enhanced protein adsorption upon bulk phase separation.

Project description:In all areas related to protein adsorption, from medicine to biotechnology to heterogeneous nucleation, the question about its dominant forces and control arises. In this study, we used ellipsometry and quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), as well as density-functional theory (DFT) to obtain insight into the mechanism behind a wetting transition of a protein solution. We established that using multivalent ions in a net negatively charged globular protein solution (BSA) can either cause simple adsorption on a negatively charged interface, or a (diverging) wetting layer when approaching liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) by changing protein concentration (cp) or temperature (T). We observed that the water to protein ratio in the wetting layer is substantially larger compared to simple adsorption. In the corresponding theoretical model, we treated the proteins as limited-valence (patchy) particles and identified a wetting transition for this complex system. This wetting is driven by a bulk instability introduced by metastable LLPS exposed to an ion-activated attractive substrate.

Adsorption and Aggregation Activity of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Rhamnolipid Mixture.

Project description:Measurements of the surface tension, density and viscosity of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and rhamnolipid (RL) mixtures were carried out in aqueous solution. From the obtained results, composition of mixed surface layer at the water-air interface, mixed micelles, parameter of intermolecular interactions, activity of SDS and RL in the surface layer and micelles, Gibbs standard free energy of adsorption and micellization as well as Gibbs free energy of SDS and RL mixing in the surface layer and micelles were established. These parameters were discussed in the light of independent adsorption of SDS and RL and the size of their molecules as well as the area in contact with water molecules. A correlation between the number of water molecules in contact with those of SDS and RL and standard free energy of adsorption as well as micellization of these surfactants was observed. A correlation between the apparent and partial molar volumes of RL and SDS in their mixture and size of surfactant molecules as well as the average distance between molecules was also found. The parameter of intermolecular interactions indicates that there is a synergetic effect in the reduction of water surface tension and micelle formation.

Elucidation of Selectivity Reversals for Binary Mixture Adsorption in Microporous Adsorbents.

Project description:The adsorption selectivity, S ads, is a key metric that quantifies the efficacy of any adsorbent in mixture separations. It is common practice to use ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for estimating the value of S ads, using unary isotherm data inputs. In a number of experimental investigations, the phenomena of selectivity reversals and adsorption azeotropy (S ads = 1) have been reported in the published literature; such reversals may result from changes in mixture compositions, pressures, or pore loadings. In many cases, IAST is unable to anticipate such selectivity reversals. In this article, configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulations are used to gain insights into the phenomena of selectivity reversals. Two fundamentally different scenarios of selectivity reversals have been identified. In the first scenario, selectivity reversals are caused by inhomogeneous distribution of adsorbates due to preferential location and siting of a guest species in the pore space. For example, CO2 locates preferentially in the side pockets of mordenite and in window regions of DDR, CHA, and LTA zeolites. CO2 also congregates around the extra-framework cations of NaX zeolite. IAST fails to anticipate such selectivity reversals because its development relies on the assumption that the competition between guest species is uniform within the pore space. In the second scenario, selectivity reversals are caused by entropy effects that manifest near pore saturation conditions; the component that is preferentially adsorbed is the one that has the higher packing efficiency. For a homologous series of compounds, the component with the smaller chain length is favored at high pore occupancies. For adsorption of mixtures of alkane isomers within the intersecting channel network of MFI zeolite, the linear isomer is favored on the basis of entropic considerations.

Using Machine Learning to Parse Chemical Mixture Descriptions.

Project description:Chemical mixtures have recently come to the attention of open standards and data structures for capturing machine-readable descriptions for informatics uses. At the present time, essentially all transmission of information about mixtures is done using short text descriptions that are readable only by trained scientists, and there are no accessible repositories of marked-up mixture data. We have designed a machine learning tool that can interpret mixture descriptions and upgrade them to the high-level Mixfile format, which can in turn be used to generate Mixtures InChI notation. The interpretation achieves a high success rate and can be used at scale to markup large catalogs and inventories, with some expert checking to catch edge cases. The training data that was accumulated during the project is made openly available, along with previously released mixture editing tools and utilities.

Adsorption separation of heavier isotope gases in subnanometer carbon pores.

Project description:Isotopes of heavier gases including carbon (13C/14C), nitrogen (13N), and oxygen (18O) are highly important because they can be substituted for naturally occurring atoms without significantly perturbing the biochemical properties of the radiolabelled parent molecules. These labelled molecules are employed in clinical radiopharmaceuticals, in studies of brain disease and as imaging probes for advanced medical imaging techniques such as positron-emission tomography (PET). Established distillation-based isotope gas separation methods have a separation factor (S) below 1.05 and incur very high operating costs due to high energy consumption and long processing times, highlighting the need for new separation technologies. Here, we show a rapid and highly selective adsorption-based separation of 18O2 from 16O2 with S above 60 using nanoporous adsorbents operating near the boiling point of methane (112 K), which is accessible through cryogenic liquefied-natural-gas technology. A collective-nuclear-quantum effect difference between the ordered 18O2 and 16O2 molecular assemblies confined in subnanometer pores can explain the observed equilibrium separation and is applicable to other isotopic gases.

Metal-organic framework with optimally selective xenon adsorption and separation.

Project description:Nuclear energy is among the most viable alternatives to our current fossil fuel-based energy economy. The mass deployment of nuclear energy as a low-emissions source requires the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel to recover fissile materials and mitigate radioactive waste. A major concern with reprocessing used nuclear fuel is the release of volatile radionuclides such as xenon and krypton that evolve into reprocessing facility off-gas in parts per million concentrations. The existing technology to remove these radioactive noble gases is a costly cryogenic distillation; alternatively, porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks have demonstrated the ability to selectively adsorb xenon and krypton at ambient conditions. Here we carry out a high-throughput computational screening of large databases of metal-organic frameworks and identify SBMOF-1 as the most selective for xenon. We affirm this prediction and report that SBMOF-1 exhibits by far the highest reported xenon adsorption capacity and a remarkable Xe/Kr selectivity under conditions pertinent to nuclear fuel reprocessing.

Multi-Layer Filters: Adsorption and Filtration Mechanisms for Improved Separation.

Project description:Filters made of cellulose fiber and perlite particles were prepared using a wet laying papermaking technique. Polyamide-amine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) was added to provide wet strength. Filters were prepared at two different total basis weights of 200 and 400 grams per square meter (gsm). Single and multi-layered filters were structured for each total basis weights. The effect of total basis weights and multi-layered structure on methylene blue adsorption and silicon dioxide (SiO2) particle filtration was investigated. Methylene blue adsorption was performed in two modes: constant pressure and constant flow rate. In both operation modes, the adsorption capacity of multi-layered filters was significantly higher (16-100%) than for single-layer filters at the same overall weight. The effect of layer separation was also characterized using polypropylene separators and tested under constant flow rate operation. Separators provided more effective methylene blue adsorption by generating a well-distributed flow. Filtration performance was quantified with 0.5 μm silicon dioxide particles under constant pressure conditions; this is to mimic bacteria rejection. Filtration capability of SiO2 particles was reduced slightly (12%) with decreasing individual filter layer thickness regardless of the multi-layered structure. Filtering polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules with two different molecular weights was performed; however, no rejection was recorded. The filter internal pore structure was visualized by 3D-X ray computed tomography and the void fraction was quantified. 400 gsm single layer presented areas of low fiber density forming pores, while the pore volume decreased for thinner filter layers.

Adsorption-based membranes for air separation using transition metal oxides.

Project description:In this work, we use computational modeling to examine the viability of adsorption-based pore-flow membranes for separating gases when a purely size-based separation strategy is ineffective. Using molecular dynamics simulations of O2 and N2, we model permeation through a nanoporous graphene membrane. Permeation is assumed to follow a five-step adsorption-based pathway, with desorption being the rate-limiting step. Using this model, we observe increased selectivity between O2 and N2, resulting from increased adsorption energy differences. We explore the limits of this strategy, providing an initial set of constraints that need to be satisfied to allow for selectivity. Finally, we provide a preliminary exploration of some transition metal oxides that appear to satisfy those conditions. Using density functional theory calculations, we confirm that these oxides possess adsorption energies needed to operate as adsorption-based pore-flow membranes. These adsorption energies provide a suitable motivation to examine adsorption-based pore-flow membranes as a viable option for air separation.

Crystal Structure and Chemical Bonds in [CuII2(Tolf)4(MeOH)2]∙2MeOH.

Project description:A new coordination compound of copper(II) with a tolfenamate ligand of the paddle-wheel-like structure [CuII2(Tolf)4(MeOH)2]∙2MeOH was obtained and structurally characterized. Chemical bonds of Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) and Cu(II)-O were theoretically analyzed and compared with the results for selected similar structures from the CSD database. QTAIM analysis showed that the Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) interaction has a strength comparable to a hydrogen bond, as indicated by the electron density at a critical point. The remaining QTAIM parameters indicate stability of the Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) interaction. Other methods, such as NCI and NBO, also indicate a significant strength of this interaction. Thus, the Cu(II)∙∙∙Cu(II) interaction can be treated as one of the noncovalent interactions that affects the structure of the coordination compound, the packing of molecules in the crystal, and the general properties of the compound.
