Unprecedented Coordination-Induced Bright Red Emission from Group 12 Metal-Bound Triarylazoimidazoles.

ABSTRACT: Arylazoimidazoles are important dyes which were intensively studied in the past. In contrast, triarylazoimidazoles (derivatives which carry aryl substituents at the imidazole core) received almost no attention in the scientific literature. Here, we report a new family of simple and easily accessible triarylazoimidazole-group 12 metal complexes, which feature highly efficient photo-luminescence emission (Φ up to 0.44). Novel compounds exhibit bright red emission in solution, which could be excited with a visible light.

Bright red aggregation-induced emission nanoparticles for multifunctional applications in cancer therapy.

Project description:Developing multifunctional photosensitizers (PSs) is needed to effectively simplify cancer treatment, but it remains a big challenge. Here, two red-emitting AIE-active, donor-acceptor (D-A) PSs with small ΔE ST and their AIE nanoparticles, are rationally designed and synthesized. The PS1 NPs exhibit bright red-emission with high quantum yield, appropriate 1O2 generation ability and good biocompatibility. More importantly, PS1 NPs can strongly light up the cytoplasm by gently shaking the cells for only 5 s at room temperature, indicating ultrafast staining and mild incubation conditions. In vitro and in vivo cell tracing demonstrate that PS1 NPs can track cells over 14 days, and effectively inhibit tumor growth upon irradiation. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first example of a PS that integrates image-guided PDT, ultrafast staining and long-term tracing functions, demonstrating the "all-in-one" concept which offers great advantages for potential clinical applications.

Manganese-Doped, Lead-Free Double Perovskite Nanocrystals for Bright Orange-Red Emission.

Project description:Lead-free halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have recently attracted attention due to their nontoxicity and stability as alternatives to lead-based perovskite NCs. Here, we report undoped and manganese-doped all-inorganic, lead-free double perovskite (DP) NCs: Cs2NaIn x Bi1-x Cl6 (0 < x < 1) and Cs2NaIn x Bi1-x Cl6:Mn (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) NCs. Undoped NCs exhibit blue emission. Through doping Mn2+ ions into Cs2NaIn x Bi1-x Cl6 NCs, we can avoid self-trapped exciton emission and realize bright orange red emission of Mn2+ dopants with the highest photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 44.6%. The photoluminescence (PL) is tunable from yellow emission to orange-red emission corresponding to a red shift from 583 to 614 nm with increasing In content. Interestingly, the PL emission of Mn-doped NCs shows a red shift from the bulk size to the nanoscale. The Mn-doped NCs show good stability in air. In addition, we further prove the process of dark self-trapped state-assisted Mn2+ emission in DP NCs by ultrafast transient absorption techniques.

Red-Light-Induced Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer Catalysis by Tuning the Axial Coordination of Cobyrinate.

Project description:Photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) is a powerful technique for the formation of reactive radical species via homolytic cleavage of the metal-ligand bond. Here, we present that the excited state LMCT of a cobyrinate complex can be accessed by tuning its axial coordination with thiolates as ligands. We demonstrate the photoreduction of cobalt via the excited state Co-S bond homolytic cleavage, as guided by the DFT calculations, which signify the relevance of thiolate axial ligands facilitating the LMCT reactivity. By exploiting this excited state LMCT of cobyrinate, we developed a catalyst-controlled activator regeneration mechanism to catalyze an efficient atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) under low-energy light irradiation. Tuning the coordination sphere of cobyrinate provides further control over the electronic properties of the complex while also accessing photothermal conversion in mediating ATRP catalysis.

Main-group metal cyclophane complexes with high coordination numbers.

Project description:Density functional theory calculations using the PBE0-D3BJ hybrid functional have been employed to investigate the complexation of main-group metal-cations with [2.2.2]paracyclophane and deltaphane. Geometry optimization under symmetry constraints was performed to observe the mode of coordination that a metal-cation adopts when it resides inside the cyclophane cavity. Thermodynamic properties were investigated to note the trends of stability along a group of metals. To further investigate the bonding properties, Morokuma-Ziegler energy decomposition analysis, natural bond orbital analysis and Bader's analysis were employed. It was observed that most of the main-group metal complexes with cyclophanes prefer an η6η6η6 coordination mode where the metal-cation sits in the centre of the cyclophane cavity. There is an increased thermodynamic stability in [2.2.2]paracyclophane complexes compared to their deltaphane analogues while the reverse is true regarding the strength of coordination based on interaction energy.

Broadband Emission in Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Halides of Group 12 Metals.

Project description:We report syntheses, crystal and electronic structures, and characterization of three new hybrid organic-inorganic halides (R)ZnBr3(DMSO), (R)2CdBr4·DMSO, and (R)CdI3(DMSO) (where (R) = C6(CH3)5CH2N(CH3)3, and DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide). The compounds can be conveniently prepared as single crystals and bulk polycrystalline powders using a DMSO-methanol solvent system. On the basis of the single-crystal X-ray diffraction results carried out at room temperature and 100 K, all compounds have zero-dimensional (0D) crystal structures featuring alternating layers of bulky organic cations and molecular inorganic anions based on a tetrahedral coordination around group 12 metal cations. The presence of discrete molecular building blocks in the 0D structures results in localized charges and tunable room-temperature light emission, including white light for (R)ZnBr3(DMSO), bluish-white light for (R)2CdBr4·DMSO, and green for (R)CdI3(DMSO). The highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) value of 3.07% was measured for (R)ZnBr3(DMSO), which emits cold white light based on the calculated correlated color temperature (CCT) of 11,044 K. All compounds exhibit fast photoluminescence lifetimes on the timescale of tens of nanoseconds, consistent with the fast luminescence decay observed in π-conjugated organic molecules. Temperature dependence photoluminescence study showed the appearance of additional peaks around 550 nm, resulting from the organic salt emission. Density functional theory calculations show that the incorporation of both the low-gap aromatic molecule R and the relatively electropositive Zn and Cd metals can lead to exciton localization at the aromatic molecular cations, which act as luminescence centers.

Electroluminescent Warm White Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Passivation Enabled Bright Red Bandgap Emission Carbon Quantum Dots.

Project description:The development of efficient red bandgap emission carbon quantum dots (CQDs) for realizing high-performance electroluminescent warm white light-emitting diodes (warm-WLEDs) represents a grand challenge. Here, the synthesis of three red-emissive electron-donating group passivated CQDs (R-EGP-CQDs): R-EGP-CQDs-NMe2, -NEt2, and -NPr2 is reported. The R-EGP-CQDs, well soluble in common organic solvents, display bright red bandgap emission at 637, 642, and 645 nm, respectively, reaching the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (QY) up to 86.0% in ethanol. Theoretical investigations reveal that the red bandgap emission originates from the rigid π-conjugated skeleton structure, and the -NMe2, -NEt2, and -NPr2 passivation plays a key role in inducing charge transfer excited state in the π-conjugated structure to afford the high QY. Solution-processed electroluminescent warm-WLEDs based on the R-EGP-CQDs-NMe2, -NEt2, and -NPr2 display voltage-stable warm white spectra with a maximum luminance of 5248-5909 cd m-2 and a current efficiency of 3.65-3.85 cd A-1. The warm-WLEDs also show good long-term operational stability (L/L 0 > 80% after 50 h operation, L 0: 1000 cd m-2). The electron-donating group passivation strategy opens a new avenue to realizing efficient red bandgap emission CQDs and developing high-performance electroluminescent warm-WLEDs.

Hydrophobic carbon dots with blue dispersed emission and red aggregation-induced emission.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) have been studied for years as one of the most promising fluorescent nanomaterials. However, CDs with red or solid-state fluorescence are rarely reported. Herein, through a one-pot solvothermal treatment, hydrophobic CDs (H-CDs) with blue dispersed emission and red aggregation-induced emission are obtained. When water is introduced, the hydrophobic interaction leads to aggregation of the H-CDs. The formation of H-CD clusters induces the turning off of the blue emission, as the carbonized cores suffer from π-π stacking interactions, and the turning on of the red fluorescence, due to restriction of the surfaces' intramolecular rotation around disulfide bonds, which conforms to the aggregation-induced-emission phenomenon. This on-off fluorescence of the H-CDs is reversible when the H-CD powder is completely dissolved. Moreover, the H-CD solution dispersed in filter paper is nearly colorless. Finally, we develop a reversible two switch-mode luminescence ink for advanced anti-counterfeiting and dual-encryption.

Highly active oxygen reduction non-platinum group metal electrocatalyst without direct metal-nitrogen coordination.

Project description:Replacement of noble metals in catalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction with transition metals mostly create active sites based on a composite of nitrogen-coordinated transition metal in close concert with non-nitrogen-coordinated carbon-embedded metal atom clusters. Here we report a non-platinum group metal electrocatalyst with an active site devoid of any direct nitrogen coordination to iron that outperforms the benchmark platinum-based catalyst in alkaline media and is comparable to its best contemporaries in acidic media. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with ex situ microscopy clearly shows nitrided carbon fibres with embedded iron particles that are not directly involved in the oxygen reduction pathway. Instead, the reaction occurs primarily on the carbon-nitrogen structure in the outer skin of the nitrided carbon fibres. Implications include the potential of creating greater active site density and the potential elimination of any Fenton-type process involving exposed iron ions culminating in peroxide initiated free-radical formation.

Solvent-Induced Bright Emission in Lead-Free Organic-Inorganic Antimony Bromides with Reversible Transformation.

Project description:Lead-free low-dimensional organic-inorganic metal halides have gained increasing attention in a wide range of applications due to their low toxicity, outstanding optical performance, and structural tunability. In this work, a general method of incorporating organic molecule into sodium antimony bromides is introduced. The 1D Na3SbBr6(C2H6OS)6 and Na3SbBr6(C4H8OS)6 single crystals exhibit bright yellow and orange emission with PL peaks at 610 and 664 nm, and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 85% and 60%, respectively. These two compounds can be reversibly converted into each other by the removal and addition of the organic components. Their exceptional luminescent performance enables them to be used as solid-state phosphors for the fabrication of yellow and orange down-conversion LEDs. A white LED with a high color rendering index (CRI) of 95 is also fabricated by using Na3SbBr6(C2H6OS)6 as the yellow phosphor. The universality of this method is demonstrated by synthesizing other members of this family with diverse A-groups, including methylammonium (MA) and formamidinium (FA). This work provides an effective strategy for the development of diverse lead-free and high-performance organic-inorganic hybrid materials and indicates these organic-inorganic hybrid compounds are promising luminescent materials for lighting or displays.
