Adsorption and Dissociation of Ni(acac)₂ on Iron by Ab Initio Calculations.

ABSTRACT: Among metal β-diketonates, nickel acetylacetonate (Ni(acac)₂) has been widely employed as a precursor for many chemical structures, due to its catalytic properties. Here, we investigate, by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the adsorption and dissociation of this complex: after an evaluation of the structural and electronic properties of Ni(acac)₂, a comparison between different dissociation patterns reveals that the most favorable pattern for the complex adsorbed on iron is different from the one suggested by considering the strength of the bonds in the isolated complex and an attempt to generalize this dissociation model is made in this work. Moreover, the most favorable adsorption configurations turned out to be a long bridge positioning of the nickel atom along with an on top positioning of the oxygen atoms of Ni(acac)₂, while a short bridge positioning is the most favorable for the central metallic unit alone.

Energetic and Spectroscopic Properties of Astrophysically Relevant MgC4H Radicals Using High-Level Ab Initio Calculations.

Project description:Considering the importance of magnesium-bearing hydrocarbon molecules (MgCnH; n = 2, 4, and 6) in the carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes (e.g., IRC+10216), a total of 28 constitutional isomers of MgC4H have been theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and coupled-cluster methods. The zero-point vibrational energy corrected relative energies at the ROCCSD(T)/cc-pCVTZ level of theory reveal that the linear isomer, 1-magnesapent-2,4-diyn-1-yl (1, 2Σ+), is the global minimum geometry on the MgC4H potential energy surface. The latter has been detected both in the laboratory and in the evolved carbon star, IRC+10216. The calculated spectroscopic data for 1 match well with the experimental observations (error ∼ 0.78%) which validates our theoretical methodology. Plausible isomerization processes happening among different isomers are examined using DFT and coupled-cluster methods. CASPT2 calculations have been performed for a few isomers exhibiting multireference characteristics. The second most stable isomer, 1-ethynyl-1λ3-magnesacycloprop-2-ene-2,3-diyl (2, 2A1, μ = 2.54 D), is 146 kJ mol-1 higher in energy than 1 and possibly the next promising candidate to be detected in the laboratory or in the interstellar medium in future.

Electronic properties of several two dimensional halides from ab initio calculations.

Project description:Using density functional theory, we study the electronic properties of several halide monolayers. We show that their electronic bandgaps, as obtained with the HSE hybrid functional, range between 3.0 and 7.5 eV and that their phonon spectra are dynamically stable. Additionally, we show that under an external electric field some of these systems exhibit a semiconductor-to-metal transition.

Dynamics Studies of Nitrogen Interstitial in GaN from Ab Initio Calculations.

Project description:Understanding the properties of defects is crucial to design higher performance semiconductor materials because they influence the electronic and optical properties significantly. Using ab initio calculations, the dynamics properties of nitrogen interstitial in GaN material, including the configuration, migration, and interaction with vacancy were systematically investigated in the present work. By introducing different sites of foreign nitrogen atom, the most stable configuration of nitrogen interstitial was calculated to show a threefold symmetry in each layer and different charge states were characterized, respectively. In the researches of migration, two migration paths, in-plane and out-of-plane, were considered. With regards to the in-plane migration, an intermediated rotation process was observed first time. Due to this rotation behavior, two different barriers were demonstrated to reveal that the migration is an anisotropic behavior. Additionally, charged nitrogen Frenkel pair was found to be a relatively stable defect complex and its well separation distance was about 3.9 Å. Part of our results are in good agreement with the experimental results, and our work provides underlying insights of the identification and dynamics of nitrogen interstitial in GaN material. This study of defects in GaN material is useful to establish a more complete theory and improve the performance of GaN-based devices.

Water dissociation at the water-rutile TiO2(110) interface from ab initio-based deep neural network simulations.

Project description:The interaction of water with TiO2 surfaces is of crucial importance in various scientific fields and applications, from photocatalysis for hydrogen production and the photooxidation of organic pollutants to self-cleaning surfaces and bio-medical devices. In particular, the equilibrium fraction of water dissociation at the TiO2-water interface has a critical role in the surface chemistry of TiO2, but is difficult to determine both experimentally and computationally. Among TiO2 surfaces, rutile TiO2(110) is of special interest as the most abundant surface of TiO2's stable rutile phase. While surface-science studies have provided detailed information on the interaction of rutile TiO2(110) with gas-phase water, much less is known about the TiO2(110)-water interface, which is more relevant to many applications. In this work, we characterize the structure of the aqueous TiO2(110) interface using nanosecond timescale molecular dynamics simulations with ab initio-based deep neural network potentials that accurately describe water/TiO2(110) interactions over a wide range of water coverages. Simulations on TiO2(110) slab models of increasing thickness provide insight into the dynamic equilibrium between molecular and dissociated adsorbed water at the interface and allow us to obtain a reliable estimate of the equilibrium fraction of water dissociation. We find a dissociation fraction of 22 ± 6% with an associated average hydroxyl lifetime of 7.6 ± 1.8 ns. These quantities are both much larger than corresponding estimates for the aqueous anatase TiO2(101) interface, consistent with the higher water photooxidation activity that is observed for rutile relative to anatase.

Enzyme active site interactions by Raman/FTIR, NMR, and ab initio calculations.

Project description:Characterization of enzyme active site structure and interactions at high resolution is important for the understanding of the enzyme catalysis. Vibrational frequency and NMR chemical shift measurements of enzyme-bound ligands are often used for such purpose when X-ray structures are not available or when higher resolution active site structures are desired. This review is focused on how ab initio calculations may be integrated with vibrational and NMR chemical shift measurements to quantitatively determine high-resolution ligand structures (up to 0.001 Å for bond length and 0.01 Å for hydrogen bonding distance) and how interaction energies between bound ligand and its surroundings at the active site may be determined. Quantitative characterization of substrate ionic states, bond polarizations, tautomeric forms, conformational changes and its interactions with surroundings in enzyme complexes that mimic ground state or transition state can provide snapshots for visualizing the substrate structural evolution along enzyme-catalyzed reaction pathway. Our results have shown that the integration of spectroscopic studies with theoretical computation greatly enhances our ability to interpret experimental data and significantly increases the reliability of the theoretical analysis.

Polydopamine and eumelanin molecular structures investigated with ab initio calculations.

Project description:A set of computational methods that contains a brute-force algorithmic generation of chemical isomers, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations is reported and applied to investigate nearly 3000 probable molecular structures of polydopamine (PDA) and eumelanin. All probable early-polymerized 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) oligomers, ranging from dimers to tetramers, have been systematically analyzed to find the most stable geometry connections as well as to propose a set of molecular models that represents the chemically diverse nature of PDA and eumelanin. Our results indicate that more planar oligomers have a tendency to be more stable. This finding is in good agreement with recent experimental observations, which suggested that PDA and eumelanin are composed of nearly planar oligomers that appear to be stacked together via π-π interactions to form graphite-like layered aggregates. We also show that there is a group of tetramers notably more stable than the others, implying that even though there is an inherent chemical diversity in PDA and eumelanin, the molecular structures of the majority of the species are quite repetitive. Our results also suggest that larger oligomers are less likely to form. This observation is also consistent with experimental measurements, supporting the existence of small oligomers instead of large polymers as main components of PDA and eumelanin. In summary, this work brings an insight into the controversial structure of PDA and eumelanin, explaining some of the most important structural features, and providing a set of molecular models for more accurate modeling of eumelanin-like materials.

Vibrational-mechanical properties of the highly-mismatched Cd1-xBexTe semiconductor alloy: experiment and ab initio calculations.

Project description:The emerging CdTe-BeTe semiconductor alloy that exhibits a dramatic mismatch in bond covalency and bond stiffness clarifying its vibrational-mechanical properties is used as a benchmark to test the limits of the percolation model (PM) worked out to explain the complex Raman spectra of the related but less contrasted Zn1-xBex-chalcogenides. The test is done by way of experiment ([Formula: see text]), combining Raman scattering with X-ray diffraction at high pressure, and ab initio calculations ([Formula: see text] ~ 0-0.5; [Formula: see text]~1). The (macroscopic) bulk modulus [Formula: see text] drops below the CdTe value on minor Be incorporation, at variance with a linear [Formula: see text] versus [Formula: see text] increase predicted ab initio, thus hinting at large anharmonic effects in the real crystal. Yet, no anomaly occurs at the (microscopic) bond scale as the regular bimodal PM-type Raman signal predicted ab initio for Be-Te in minority ([Formula: see text]~0, 0.5) is barely detected experimentally. At large Be content ([Formula: see text]~1), the same bimodal signal relaxes all the way down to inversion, an unprecedented case. However, specific pressure dependencies of the regular ([Formula: see text]~0, 0.5) and inverted ([Formula: see text]~1) Be-Te Raman doublets are in line with the predictions of the PM. Hence, the PM applies as such to Cd1-xBexTe without further refinement, albeit in a "relaxed" form. This enhances the model's validity as a generic descriptor of phonons in alloys.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Investigation of CH4/CO2 Adsorption on Calcite: Improving the Enhanced Gas Recovery Process.

Project description:Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of CH4 and CO2 on the calcite (104) surface have been carried out for the molecular level analysis of CO2-enhanced gas recovery process (EGR). This process takes advantage of the stronger interaction of CO2 with the reservoir walls compared to CH4, therefore can improve the extraction of the latter, while at the same time sequestering the former underground. Pure and mixed gases were considered and the temperature effect on the systems behavior was analyzed. For pure gases, carbon dioxide shows great stability on the surface in the studied temperature range, while methane molecules start leaving the surface at 298 K. For gas mixtures, the reported results confirm that for low to medium concentrations, a temperature of 373 K could determine the best methane extraction efficiency, as CH4 interaction with the surface is quite weak and carbon dioxide binds strongly on the surface. On the other hand, when full coverage is achieved, the best efficiency is reached for the highest temperature. Finally, when considered a 2:2 gas layer, carbon dioxide tends to adsorb preferentially to the surface while methane keeps floating above it, thereby reducing its chance to be adsorbed back. These results reveal nanoscopic details for the design of suitable EGR processes.

Ab initio calculations of torsionally mediated hyperfine splittings in E states of acetaldehyde.

Project description:Quantum chemistry packages can be used to predict with reasonable accuracy spin-rotation hyperfine interaction constants for methanol, which contains one methyl-top internal rotor. In this work we use one of these packages to calculate components of the spin-rotation interaction tensor for acetaldehyde. We then use torsion-rotation wavefunctions obtained from a fit to the acetaldehyde torsion-rotation spectrum to calculate the expected magnitude of hyperfine splittings analogous to those observed at relatively high J values in the E symmetry states of methanol. We find that theory does indeed predict doublet splittings at moderate J values in the acetaldehyde torsion-rotation spectrum, which closely resemble those seen in methanol, but that the factor of three decrease in hyperfine spin-rotation constants compared to methanol puts the largest of the acetaldehyde splittings a factor of two below presently available Lamb-dip resolution.
