Dopant-Free π-Conjugated Hole Transport Materials for Highly Stable and Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells.

ABSTRACT: Current high-efficiency hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been fabricated with doped hole transfer material (HTM), which has shown short-term stability. Doping applied in HTMs for PSCs can enhance the hole mobility and PSCs' power conversion efficiency, while the stability of PSCs will be significantly decreased due to inherent hygroscopic properties and chemical incompatibility. Development of dopant-free HTM with high hole mobility is a challenge and of utmost importance. In this review, a series of selected and typical π-conjugated dopant-free hole transport materials, mainly regarding small molecules, are reviewed, which could consequently help to further design high-performance dopant-free HTMs. In addition, an outline of the molecular design concept and also the perspective of ideal dopant-free HTMs were explored.

Dopant-Free Hole Transport Materials Afford Efficient and Stable Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules.

Project description:The emerging CsPbI3 perovskites are highly efficient and thermally stable materials for wide-band gap perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but the doped hole transport materials (HTMs) accelerate the undesirable phase transition of CsPbI3 in ambient. Herein, a dopant-free D-π-A type HTM named CI-TTIN-2F has been developed which overcomes this problem. The suitable optoelectronic properties and energy-level alignment endow CI-TTIN-2F with excellent charge collection properties. Moreover, CI-TTIN-2F provides multisite defect-healing effects on the defective sites of CsPbI3 surface. Inorganic CsPbI3 PSCs with CI-TTIN-2F HTM feature high efficiencies up to 15.9 %, along with 86 % efficiency retention after 1000 h under ambient conditions. Inorganic perovskite solar modules were also fabricated that exhibiting an efficiency of 11.0 % with a record area of 27 cm2 . This work confirms that using efficient dopant-free HTMs is an attractive strategy to stabilize inorganic PSCs for their future scale-up.

Dopant-Free Hole Transport Materials with a Long Alkyl Chain for Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Hole transport materials are indispensable to high efficiency perovskite solar cells. Two new hole transporting materials (HTMs), named 4,4'-(9-nonyl-9H-carbazole-3,6-diyl)bis (N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aniline) (CZTPA-1) and 4,4'-(9-methyl-9H-carbazole-3,6-diyl)bis (N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aniline)(CZTPA-2), were developed by different alkyl substitution methods. The two compounds, containing a carbazole core and triphenylamine (TPA) groups with different lengths of the alkyl chain, were designed and synthesized through a two-step synthesis approach. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) was found to be affected by the length of the alkyl chain, reaching 7% for CZTPA-1 and 11% for CZTPA-2. Furthermore, the CZTPA-2 still maintained 89.7% of its original performance after 400 h. The proposed results demonstrate the effect of carbon chain substituents on the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs).

Fluoranthene-based dopant-free hole transporting materials for efficient perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Significant efforts have been devoted to developing new dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Fluoranthene is one typical cyclopentene-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a rigid planarized structure, and thus could be an ideal building block to construct dopant-free HTMs, which have not been reported yet. Here, we report a new and simple synthetic method to prepare unreported 2,3-dicyano-fluoranthene through a Diels-Alder reaction between dibenzofulvene and tetracyanoethylene, and demonstrate that it can serve as an efficient electron-withdrawing unit for constructing donor-acceptor (D-A) type HTMs. This novel building block not only endows the resulting molecules with suitable energy levels, but also enables highly ordered and strong molecular packing in solid states, both of which could facilitate hole extraction and transport. Thus with dopant-free HTMs, impressive efficiencies of 18.03% and 17.01% which are associated with enhanced stability can be achieved based on conventional n-i-p and inverted p-i-n PVSCs respectively, outperforming most organic dopant-free HTMs reported so far.

Nonspiro, Fluorene-Based, Amorphous Hole Transporting Materials for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Novel nonspiro, fluorene-based, small-molecule hole transporting materials (HTMs) V1050 and V1061 are designed and synthesized using a facile three-step synthetic route. The synthesized compounds exhibit amorphous nature with a high glass transition temperature, a good solubility, and decent thermal stability. The planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) employing V1050 generated an excellent power conversion efficiency of 18.3%, which is comparable to 18.9% obtained with the state-of-the-art Spiro-OMeTAD. Importantly, the devices based on V1050 and V1061 show better stability compared to devices based on Spiro-OMeTAD when aged without any encapsulation under uncontrolled humidity conditions (relative humidity around 60%) in the dark and under continuous full sun illumination.

Pyrene-Based Dopant-Free Hole-Transport Polymers with Fluorine-Induced Favorable Molecular Stacking Enable Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:A new class of polymeric hole-transport materials (HTMs) are explored by inserting a two-dimensionally conjugated fluoro-substituted pyrene into thiophene and selenophene polymeric chains. The broad conjugated plane of pyrene and "Lewis soft" selenium atoms not only enhance the π-π stacking of HTM molecules greatly but also render a strong interaction with the perovskite surface, leading to an efficient charge transport/transfer in both the HTM layer and the perovskite/HTM interface. Note that fluorine substitution adjacent to pyrene boosts the stacking of HTMs towards a more favorable face-on orientation, further facilitating the efficient charge transport. As a result, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) employing PE10 as dopant-free HTM afford an excellent efficiency of 22.3 % and the dramatically enhanced device longevity, qualifying it among the best PSCs based on dopant-free HTMs.

High-Hole-Mobility Metal-Organic Framework as Dopant-Free Hole Transport Layer for Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:A dopant-free hole transport layer with high mobility and a low-temperature process is desired for optoelectronic devices. Here, we study a metal-organic framework material with high hole mobility and strong hole extraction capability as an ideal hole transport layer for perovskite solar cells. By utilizing lifting-up method, the thickness controllable floating film of Ni3(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene)2 at the gas-liquid interface is transferred onto ITO-coated glass substrate. The Ni3(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene)2 film demonstrates high compactness and uniformity. The root-mean-square roughness of the film is 5.5 nm. The ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and the steady-state photoluminescence spectra exhibit the Ni3(HITP)2 film can effectively transfer holes from perovskite film to anode. The perovskite solar cells based on Ni3(HITP)2 as a dopant-free hole transport layer achieve a champion power conversion efficiency of 10.3%. This work broadens the application of metal-organic frameworks in the field of perovskite solar cells.

Novel Push-Pull Benzodithiophene-Containing Polymers as Hole-Transport Materials for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Donor-acceptor conjugated polymers are considered advanced semiconductor materials for the development of thin-film electronics. One of the most attractive families of polymeric semiconductors in terms of photovoltaic applications are benzodithiophene-based polymers owing to their highly tunable electronic and physicochemical properties, and readily scalable production. In this work, we report the synthesis of three novel push-pull benzodithiophene-based polymers with different side chains and their investigation as hole transport materials (HTM) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It is shown that polymer P3 that contains triisopropylsilyl side groups exhibits better film-forming ability that, along with high hole mobilities, results in increased characteristics of PSCs. Encouraging a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.4% was achieved for P3-based PSCs that outperformed the efficiency of devices based on P1, P2, and benchmark PTAA polymer. These findings feature the great potential of benzodithiophene-based conjugated polymers as dopant-free HTMs for the fabrication of efficient perovskite solar cells.

Conjugated polyelectrolyte hole transport layer for inverted-type perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials offer the potential for realization of low-cost and flexible next-generation solar cells fabricated by low-temperature solution processing. Although efficiencies of perovskite solar cells have dramatically improved up to 19% within the past 5 years, there is still considerable room for further improvement in device efficiency and stability through development of novel materials and device architectures. Here we demonstrate that inverted-type perovskite solar cells with pH-neutral and low-temperature solution-processable conjugated polyelectrolyte as the hole transport layer (instead of acidicPedotPSS) exhibit a device efficiency of over 12% and improved device stability in air. As an alternative toPedotPSS, this work is the first report on the use of an organic hole transport material that enables the formation of uniform perovskite films with complete surface coverage and the demonstration of efficient, stable perovskite/fullerene planar heterojunction solar cells.

2D-Self-Assembled Organic Materials in Undoped Hole Transport Bilayers for Efficient Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Interfaces between photoactive perovskite layer and selective contacts play a key role in the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The properties of the interface can be modified by the introduction of molecular interlayers between the halide perovskite and the transporting layers. Herein, two novel structurally related molecules, 1,3,5-tris(α-carbolin-6-yl)benzene (TACB) and the hexamethylated derivative of truxenotris(7-azaindole) (TTAI), are reported. Both molecules have the ability to self-assemble through reciprocal hydrogen bond interactions, but they have different degrees of conformational freedom. The benefits of combining these tripodal 2D-self-assembled small molecular materials with well-known hole transporting layers (HTLs), such as PEDOT:PSS and PTAA, in PSCs with inverted configuration are described. The use of these molecules, particularly the more rigid TTAI, enhanced the charge extraction efficiency and reduced the charge recombination. Consequently, an improved photovoltaic performance was achieved in comparison to the devices fabricated with the standard HTLs.

High conductivity Ag-based metal organic complexes as dopant-free hole-transport materials for perovskite solar cells with high fill factors.

Project description:Hole-transport materials (HTMs) play an important role as hole scavenger materials in the most efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, for the first time, two Ag-based metal organic complexes (HA1 and HA2) are employed as a new class of dopant-free hole-transport material for application in PSCs. These HTMs show excellent conductivity and hole-transport mobility. Consequently, the devices based on these two HTMs exhibit unusually high fill factors of 0.76 for HA1 and 0.78 for HA2, which are significantly higher than that obtained using spiro-OMeTAD (0.69). The cell based on HA1-HTM in its pristine form achieved a high power conversion efficiency of 11.98% under air conditions, which is comparable to the PCE of the cell employing the well-known doped spiro-MeOTAD (12.27%) under the same conditions. More importantly, their facile synthesis and purification without using column chromatography makes these new silver-based HTMs highly promising for future commercial applications of PSCs. These results provide a new way to develop more low-cost and high conductivity metal-complex based HTMs for efficient PSCs.
