Anxiety, sleep disorders and self-efficacy among nurses during COVID-19 pandemic: A large cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Aim and objectives

To assess the prevalence of anxiety, sleep disorders and self-efficacy and their predicting factors among nurses facing COVID-19.

Background

The spread of COVID-19 throughout the world determined a series of modifications of several National Health Service organisations, with a potential series of psychological consequences among nurses, who were particularly afflicted by this situation of changes and precariousness.

Design

A cross-sectional study was carried out from February-April 2020.

Methods

A total of 1,005 nurses employed in different Italian hospital wards, during the COVID-19 pandemic, were recruited. Analyses were based on descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. The STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies was used in this study.

Results

The prevalence of sleep disturbances, moderate anxiety and low self-efficacy was 71.4%, 33.23% and 50.65%, respectively. We found a positive correlation between anxiety and sleep quality (0.408; p < .0001) and negative correlations between self-efficacy and anxiety (-0.217; p < .0001) and sleep quality and self-efficacy (-0.134; p < .0001). The factor independently associated with all variables was gender. Females were more prone to sleep disturbances, anxiety and low levels of self-efficacy than males (p < .05).

Conclusions

The prevalence of anxiety, sleep disorders and low self-efficacy among Italian nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic was high. Healthcare managers should recognise and consider these results to reduce the risk of the onset of major mental problems that could result in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Relevance to clinical practice

Nurses facing major incidents as COVID-19 pandemic are among healthcare personnel exposed to a high risk to develop psychological disturbance that should be assessed and recognised, in order to find helpful coping strategies to inform support services and avoid to hesitate in post-traumatic stress disorders.

Project description:ObjectivesMany factors are related to oncology nurses' professional values. However, the evidence on the relevance of professional values among oncology nurses in China remains sparse. This study aims to investigate the relationship between depression, self-efficacy, and professional values among Chinese oncology nurses and analyze the mediating effect of self-efficacy on this association.MethodsIt was a multicenter cross-sectional study designed with the STROBE guidelines. An anonymous online questionnaire recruited 2530 oncology nurses from 55 hospitals in six provinces of China between March and June 2021. Measures included self-designed sociodemographic and fully validated instruments. Pearson correlation analysis was employed to explore the associations between depression, self-efficacy, and professional values. Bootstrapping analysis by the PROCESS macro was used to examine the mediating effect of self-efficacy.ResultsThe total scores of depression, self-efficacy, and professional values of Chinese oncology nurses were 52.75 ± 12.62, 28.39 ± 6.33, and 101.55 ± 20.43, respectively. About 55.2% of Chinese oncology nurses were depressed. Chinese oncology nurses' professional values were generally intermediate. Their professional values were negatively related to depression and positively correlated with self-efficacy, while depression was negatively related to self-efficacy. Moreover, self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between depression and professional values, accounting for 24.8% of the total effect.ConclusionsDepression negatively predicts self-efficacy and professional values, and self-efficacy positively predicts professional values. Meanwhile, depression in Chinese oncology nurses has an indirect effect on their professional values through self-efficacy. Nursing managers and oncology nurses themselves should develop strategies aimed at relieving depression and improving self-efficacy to strengthen their positive professional values.

Project description:PurposeTo explore the correlation between self-management and anxiety and quality of life in patients with anxiety disorders and to understand whether self-management can influence the relationship between anxiety and quality of life and provide a basis for improving their anxiety and quality of life.MethodsA cross-sectional survey of 245 patients with anxiety disorders in West China Hospital of Sichuan University was conducted using the Self-Management of Anxiety Disorders Scale, Self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), and World Health Organization Quality of Life-BBREF. The data were then analyzed using descriptive tests and Pearson correlation in SPSS 25. Bootstrap mediated effects tests were used to test the effect relationship between anxiety, quality of life and self-management scores in patients with anxiety disorders and Amos was used to establish the structural equation model.ResultsThe results of the correlation analysis showed that the total self-management score was positively correlated with the total quality of life score (r = 0.695, P <0.001), physical domain score (r = 0.552, P <0.001), psychological domain score (r = 0.661, P <0.001), social relations domain score (r = 0.542, P <0.001), and environmental domain score (r = 0.614, P <0.001). Additionally, it was negatively correlated with SAS score (r = -0.470, P <0.001). Self-management partially mediates the relationship between anxiety and quality of life, and the direct effect value of anxiety on quality of life was -0.44. The indirect effect value of self-management was -0.27, accounting for 38% of the total effect value.ConclusionSelf-management of patients with anxiety disorders was negatively correlated with anxiety and positively correlated with quality of life. It played a partially mediating effect between anxiety and quality of life. We recommend that healthcare providers pay attention to self-management interventions for patients with anxiety disorders to further improve their quality of life.

Project description:BackgroundThe spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, as well as its high contagiousness, increased students' anxiety and stress. Anxiety may affect individuals' functioning and undermine their self-efficacy. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the relationship between COVID-19 anxiety and self-efficacy among adolescent students.MethodThis cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted on 306 adolescent students in southern Iran. The research tools were the Corona Disease Anxiety Scale consisting of physical and psychological dimensions of anxiety and the Self-Efficacy Scale composed of three subscales: academic, social, and emotional self-efficacy. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25. Pearson correlation was used to investigate the relationship between COVID-19 anxiety and self-efficacy using the total score of both scales and their dimensions as well. T-Test and one-way ANOVA were used to see whether sociodemographic variables of participants significantly varied in self-efficacy and COVID-19 anxiety.ResultsThe mean score of COVID-19 anxiety was 11.70 ± 9.25, representing mild anxiety, and the mean score of the psychological dimension was higher than that of the physical dimension. The mean self-efficacy score was 81.29 ± 12.98 indicating high level of self-efficacy. In addition, the mean score of academic self-efficacy was higher than that of social and emotional self-efficacy. There was an inverse, significant, and mild to moderate relationship between COVID-19 anxiety and the total score of self-efficacy (r = -.28, p < .001) and all its dimensions (r = -. 18, p = .002 for social and academic self-efficacy; r = -.32, p <. 001 for emotional self-efficacy). While the physical dimension of COVID-19 anxiety correlated significantly and negatively with self-efficacy total and subscale scores, the mental subscale of COVID-19 anxiety only correlated with the self-efficacy total score (r = -.20, p < .001) and emotional self-efficacy (r = -.28, p < .001).ConclusionThe study results revealed that the higher the COVID-19 anxiety, the lower the self-efficacy among adolescents. It is important to prioritize the enhancement of self-efficacy among adolescents to ensure their success across various life domains including managing stressors brought about by pandemics like COVID-19. This requires a collaborative effort from parents and teachers as they are a primary source of reassurance and information. Parents and teachers can also serve as role models in showcasing resilience and positive coping with the pandemic and allow adolescent students to master adaptive coping and provide positive reinforcement for effective behaviors.

Project description:BackgroundAutism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disabilities of early childhood. Practicing nurses are in a key position to help patients with ASDs and/or their caregivers/families. This study was conducted to assess self-rated familiarity with ASDs among practicing nurses in Palestine. The study also aimed to identify the sociodemographic and practice variables that could predict high self-rated familiarity scores.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire. The study was conducted in the period between January 2019 and May 2019. The questionnaire collected: 1) the sociodemographic, pedagogic, and practice variables of the nurses, 2) their self-rated familiarity with signs and symptoms, treatment options, and community resources of ASDs, 3) their self-rated confidence in their abilities to provide counseling for parents/family/caregivers on the drugs prescribed for children/patients with ASDs and their potential adverse effects, and 4) their willingness to receive education/training on issues in ASDs.ResultsThe questionnaire was completed by 357 practicing nurses. The practicing nurses self-reported inadequate familiarity with symptoms, treatment, and community resources of ASDs. The mean familiarity score was 35.8% (SD: 18.9%). The nurses also expressed low confidence in their ability to provide counseling services to caregivers/families of children with ASDs. About 75% of the nurses agreed that they could benefit from taking a continuing educational/training program in the area of ASDs and about 82% of the nurses agreed that the nursing school curriculum should include courses in the area of ASDs. The multiple linear regression model showed that higher familiarity scores were predicted by having longer practical experience, having a higher academic degree in nursing, and having a continuing educational course/program on ASDs.ConclusionFindings of this study highlighted inadequate familiarity with issues of ASDs among practicing nurses. Higher familiarity was predicted by the length of practical experience, higher academic degree in nursing, and having continuing educational course/program on ASDs. Specifically designed pedagogic interventions might be helpful in increasing familiarity of practicing nurses on ASDs. More investigations are still needed to evaluate if these interventions can improve familiarity and services provided to patients with ASDs.
