Graphene Oxide Membranes for Tunable Ion Sieving in Acidic Radioactive Waste.

ABSTRACT: Graphene oxide (GO) membranes with unique nanolayer structure have demonstrated excellent separation capability based on their size-selective effect, but there are few reports on achieving ion-ion separation, because it is difficult to inhibit the swelling effect of GO nano sheets as well as to precisely control the interlayer spacing d to a specific value between the sizes of different metal ions. Here, selective separation of uranium from acidic radioactive waste containing multication is achieved through a precise dual-adjustment strategy on d. It is found that GO swelling is greatly restricted in highly acidic solution due to protonation effect. Then the interlayer spacing is further precisely reduced to below the diameter of uranyl ion by increasing the oxidation degree of GO. Sieving uranyl ions from other nuclide ions is successfully realized in pH =3-3 mol L^-1 nitric acid solutions.

Polyoxometalate Clusters Confined in Reduced Graphene Oxide Membranes for Effective Ion Sieving and Desalination.

Project description:Efficient 2D membranes play a critical role in water purification and desalination. However, most 2D membranes, such as graphene oxide (GO) membranes, tend to swell or disintegrate in liquid, making precise ionic sieving a tough challenge. Herein, the fabrication of the polyoxometalate clusters (PW12) intercalated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) membrane (rGO-PW12) is reported through a polyoxometalate-assisted in situ photoreduction strategy. The intercalated PW12 result in the interlayer spacing in the sub-nanometer scale and induce a nanoconfinement effect to repel the ions in various salt solutions. The permeation rate of rGO-PW12 membranes are about two orders of magnitude lower than those through the GO membrane. The confinement of nanochannels also generate the excellent non-swelling stability of rGO-PW12 membranes in aqueous solutions up to 400 h. Moreover, when applied in forward osmosis, the rGO-PW12 membranes with a thickness of 90 nm not only exhibit a high-water permeance of up to 0.11790 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 and high NaCl rejection (98.3%), but also reveal an ultrahigh water/salt selectivity of 4740. Such significantly improved ion-exclusion ability and high-water flux benefit from the multi-interactions and nanoconfinement effect between PW12 and rGO nanosheets, which afford a well-interlinked lamellar structure via hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions.

Strict molecular sieving over electrodeposited 2D-interspacing-narrowed graphene oxide membranes.

Project description:To separate small molecules/species, it's crucial but still challenging to narrow the 2D-interspacing of graphene oxide (GO) membranes without damaging the membrane. Here the fast deposition of ultrathin, defect-free and robust GO layers is realized on porous stainless steel hollow fibers (PSSHFs) by a facile and practical electrophoresis deposition (ED) method. In this approach, oxygen-containing groups of GO are selectively reduced, leading to a controlled decrease of the 2D channels of stacked GO layers. The resultant ED-GO@PSSHF composite membranes featured a sharp cutoff between C2 (ethane and ethene) and C3 (propane and propene) hydrocarbons and exhibited nearly complete rejections for the smallest alcohol and ion in aqueous solutions. This demonstrates the versatility of GO based membranes for the precise separation of various types of mixtures. At the same time, a robust mechanical strength of the ED-GO@PSSHF membrane is also achieved due to the enhanced interaction at GO/support and GO/GO interfaces.Producing graphene oxide membranes with narrow channels is desirable for small molecule separations, but methods to narrow the 2D spacing typically result in membrane damage. Here the authors exploit electrophoresis-deposition to prepare GO membranes that are reduced in situ, leading to narrow and uniform 2D channels.

Ion sieving in graphene oxide membrane enables efficient actinides/lanthanides separation.

Project description:Separation of actinides from lanthanides is of great importance for the safe management of nuclear waste and sustainable development of nuclear energy, but it represents a huge challenge due to the chemical complexity of these f-elements. Herein, we report an efficient separation strategy based on ion sieving in graphene oxide membrane. In the presence of a strong oxidizing reagent, the actinides (U, Np, Pu, Am) in a nitric acid solution exist in the high valent and linear dioxo form of actinyl ions while the lanthanides (Ce, Nd, Eu, Gd, etc.) remain as trivalent/tetravalent spheric ions. A task-specific graphene oxide membrane with an interlayer nanochannel spacing between the sizes of hydrated actinyl ions and lanthanides ions is tailored and used as an ionic cut-off filter, which blocks the larger and linear actinyl ions but allows the smaller and spheric lanthanides ions to penetrate through, affording lanthanides/actinides separation factors up to ~400. This work realizes the group separation of actinides from lanthanides under highly acidic conditions by a simple ion sieving strategy and highlights the great potential of utilizing graphene oxide membrane for nuclear waste treatment.

Quasi-vertically asymmetric channels of graphene oxide membrane for ultrafast ion sieving.

Project description:The high performance of two-dimensional (2D) channel membranes is generally achieved by preparing ultrathin or forming short channels with less tortuous transport through self-assembly of small flakes, demonstrating potential for highly efficient water desalination and purification, gas and ion separation, and organic solvent waste treatment. Here, we report the construction of vertical channels in graphene oxide (GO) membrane based on a substrate template with asymmetric pores. The membranes achieved water permeance of 2647 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 while still maintaining an ultrahigh rejection rate of 99.9% for heavy metal ions, which is superior to the state-of-the-art 2D membranes reported. Furthermore, the membranes exhibited excellent stability during long-term filtration experiments for at least 48 h, as well as resistance to ultrasonic treatment for over 100 minutes. The vertical channels possess very short pathway for almost direct water transport and a highly effective channel area, meanwhile the asymmetric porous template enhances the packing of the inserted GO nanosheets to avoid the swelling effect of membrane. Our work provides a simple way to fabricate vertical channels of 2D nanofiltration membranes with high water purification performance.

Ultrahigh Water Permeance of Reduced Graphene Oxide Membrane for Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment.

Project description:Membrane methods exhibit great potential for application in radioactive liquid waste treatment. In this work, we prepared a reduced graphene oxide using the amino-hydrothermal method (AH-rGO) that exhibited effective rejection rates of 99.9% for CoCl2, ZnCl2, NiCl2, and radionuclide 60Co solutions with an ultrahigh water permeance of >71.9 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. The thickness of the AH-rGO membranes affects the water permeance, as the membrane with a thickness of ≈250 nm has the highest water permeance of up to 125.1 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 with the corresponding rejection rate of 86.8%. Importantly, this is the most permeable membrane with a satisfactory level of the rejection rate for typical radioactive ions of Co2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+. Moreover, the AH-rGO membranes presented excellent stability. These findings demonstrate the potential of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) membranes for radioactive liquid waste treatment.

Ultrafast ion sieving using nanoporous polymeric membranes.

Project description:The great potential of nanoporous membranes for water filtration and chemical separation has been challenged by the trade-off between selectivity and permeability. Here we report on nanoporous polymer membranes with an excellent balance between selectivity and permeability of ions. Our membranes are fabricated by irradiating 2-μm-thick polyethylene terephthalate Lumirror® films with GeV heavy ions followed by ultraviolet exposure. These membranes show a high transport rate of K+ ions of up to 14 mol h-1 m-2 and a selectivity of alkali metal ions over heavy metal ions of >500. Combining transport experiments and molecular dynamics simulations with a polymeric nanopore model, we demonstrate that the high permeability is attributable to the presence of nanopores with a radius of ~0.5 nm and a density of up to 5 × 1010 cm-2, and the selectivity is ascribed to the interaction between the partially dehydrated ions and the negatively charged nanopore wall.

Photo-induced ultrafast active ion transport through graphene oxide membranes.

Project description:Layered graphene oxide membranes (GOM) with densely packed sub-nanometer-wide lamellar channels show exceptional ionic and molecular transport properties. Mass and charge transport in existing materials follows their concentration gradient, whereas attaining anti-gradient transport, also called active transport, remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate a coupled photon-electron-ion transport phenomenon through the GOM. Upon asymmetric light illumination, cations are able to move thermodynamically uphill over a broad range of concentrations, at rates much faster than that via simple diffusion. We propose, as a plausible mechanism, that light irradiation reduces the local electric potential on the GOM following a carrier diffusion mechanism. When the illumination is applied to an off-center position, an electric potential difference is built that can drive the transport of ionic species. We further develop photonic ion switches, photonic ion diodes, and photonic ion transistors as the fundamental elements for active ion sieving and artificial photosynthesis on synthetic nanofluidic circuits.

Electro- and magneto-modulated ion transport through graphene oxide membranes.

Project description:The control of ion trans-membrane transport through graphene oxide (GO) membranes is achieved by electric and magnetic fields. Electric field can either increase or decrease the ion transport through GO membranes depending on its direction, and magnetic field can enhance the ion penetration monotonically. When electric field is applied across GO membrane, excellent control of ion fluidic flows can be done. With the magnetic field, the effective anchoring of ions is demonstrated but the modulation of the ion flowing directions does not occur. The mechanism of the electro- and magneto-modulated ion trans-membrane transport is investigated, indicating that the electric fields dominate the ion migration process while the magnetic fields tune the structure of nanocapillaries within GO membranes. Results also show that the ion selectivity of GO membranes can be tuned with the electric fields while the transport of ions can be enhanced synchronously with the magnetic fields. These excellent properties make GO membranes promising in areas such as field-induced mass transport control and membrane separation.

Realizing synchronous energy harvesting and ion separation with graphene oxide membranes.

Project description:A synchronous ion separation and electricity generation process has been developed using G-O membranes. In addition to the size effect proposed prevsiouly, the separation of ions can be attributed to the different interactions between ions and G-O membranes; the generation of electricity is due to the confinement of G-O membranes, and the mobility difference of ions. Efficient energy transduction has been achieved with G-O membranes, converting magnetic, thermal and osmotic energy to electricity, distinguishing this material from other commercial semi-permeable membranes. Our study indicated that G-O membranes could find potential applications in the purification of wastewater, while producing electricity simultaneously. With G-O membranes, industrial magnetic leakage and waste heat could also be used to produce electricity, affording a superior approach for energy recovery.

Nanoconfinement enabled non-covalently decorated MXene membranes for ion-sieving.

Project description:Covalent modification is commonly used to tune the channel size and functionality of 2D membranes. However, common synthesis strategies used to produce such modifications are known to disrupt the structure of the membranes. Herein, we report less intrusive yet equally effective non-covalent modifications on Ti3C2Tx MXene membranes by a solvent treatment, where the channels are robustly decorated by protic solvents via hydrogen bond network. The densely functionalized (-O, -F, -OH) Ti3C2Tx channel allows multiple hydrogen bond establishment and its sub-1-nm size induces a nanoconfinement effect to greatly strengthen these interactions by maintaining solvent-MXene distance and solvent orientation. In sub-1-nm ion sieving and separation, as-decorated membranes exhibit stable ion rejection, and proton-cation (H+/Mn+) selectivity that is up to 50 times and 30 times, respectively, higher than that of pristine membranes. It demonstrates the feasibility of non-covalent methods as a broad modification alternative for nanochannels integrated in energy-, resource- and environment-related applications.
