Project description:Dehydrocoupling of the adduct of dimethylamine and borane, NH(CH3)2-BH3 leads to dimethylaminoborane with formal composition N(CH3)2-BH2. The structure of this product depends on the conditions of the synthesis; it may crystallize either as a dimer in a triclinic space group forming a four-membered ring [N(CH3)2-BH2]2 or as a trimer forming a six-membered ring [N(CH3)2-BH2]3 in an orthorhombic space group. Due to the denser packing, the six-membered ring in the trimer structure should be energetically more stable than the four-membered ring. The triclinic structure is stable at low temperatures. Heating the triclinic phase above 290 K leads to a second-order phase transition to a new monoclinic polymorph. While the crystal structures of the triclinic and orthorhombic phases were already known in the literature, the monoclinic crystal structure was determined from powder diffraction data in this study. Monoclinic dimethylaminoborane crystallizes in space group C2/m with the boron and nitrogen atoms located on the mirror plane, Wyckoff position 4i, while the carbon and hydrogen atoms are on the general position 8j.

Project description:The absence of residual solvent in metal precursors can be of key importance for the successful preparation of metal complexes or materials. Herein, we describe methods for the quantitation of residual coordinated tetrahydrofuran (THF) that binds to Fe[N(SiMe3)2]2, a commonly used iron synthon, when prepared according to common literature procedures. A simple method for quantitation of the amount of residual coordinated THF using 1H NMR spectroscopy is highlighted. Finally, a detailed synthetic procedure is described for the synthesis of THF-free Fe[N(SiMe3)2]2.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have gained attention as green and safe as well as economically and environmentally sustainable alternative to the traditional organic solvents. Here, we report the combination of an atom-economic, very convenient and inexpensive reagent, such as BH3NH3, with bio-based eutectic mixtures as biorenewable solvents in the synthesis of nitroalkanes, valuable precursors of amines. A variety of nitrostyrenes and alkyl-substituted nitroalkenes, including α- and β-substituted nitroolefins, were chemoselectively reduced to the nitroalkanes, with an atom economy-oriented, simple and convenient experimental procedure. A reliable and easily reproducible protocol to isolate the product without the use of any organic solvent was established, and the recyclability of the DES mixture was successfully investigated.

Project description:The structure, composition, and electronic property of mixed-cation borohydrides are of significant importance for understanding and improving their thermodynamic and kinetic activities. Conventional density functional theory (DFT) fails to correctly describe the electronic structure of the system due to insufficient cancellation of the self-interaction energy and underestimation of the band gap. In the present work, we present a systematic investigation of the structural and electronic properties of KY(BH4)4 for the first time at the DFT+U level of theory. It is found that the LDA+U method underestimates the lattice volume by ∼17.36%, while the PBE+U and PW91+U methods show good agreement with the experimental value at U = 3 and U = 4, respectively. The total energy of KY(BH4)4 calculated by PW91+U method at U = 4 is 0.97 eV lower than that calculated by PBE+U method at U = 3. We suppose that the PW91+U method is more suitable for the structural and electronic properties study of KY(BH4)4 due to the lower total energy. K+ connects with BH4 - complex through electrostatic attraction, while weak covalent interaction exists between Y3+ and BH4 - complex.

Project description:Precisely locating extra-framework cations in anionic metal-organic framework compounds remains a long-standing, yet crucial, challenge for elucidating structure-performance relationships in functional materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction is one of the most powerful approaches for this task, but single crystals of frameworks often degrade when subjected to post-synthetic metalation or reduction. Here, we demonstrate the growth of sizable single crystals of the robust metal-organic framework Fe2(bdp)3 (bdp2- = benzene-1,4-dipyrazolate) and employ single-crystal-to-single-crystal chemical reductions to access the solvated framework materials A2Fe2(bdp)3·yTHF (A = Li+, Na+, K+). X-ray diffraction analysis of the sodium and potassium congeners reveals that the cations are located near the center of the triangular framework channels and are stabilized by weak cation-π interactions with the framework ligands. Freeze-drying with benzene enables isolation of activated single crystals of Na0.5Fe2(bdp)3 and Li2Fe2(bdp)3 and the first structural characterization of activated metal-organic frameworks wherein extra-framework alkali metal cations are also structurally located. Comparison of the solvated and activated sodium-containing structures reveals that the cation positions differ in the two materials, likely due to cation migration that occurs upon solvent removal to maximize stabilizing cation-π interactions. Hydrogen adsorption data indicate that these cation-framework interactions are sufficient to diminish the effective cationic charge, leading to little or no enhancement in gas uptake relative to Fe2(bdp)3. In contrast, Mg0.85Fe2(bdp)3 exhibits enhanced H2 affinity and capacity over the non-reduced parent material. This observation shows that increasing the charge density of the pore-residing cation serves to compensate for charge dampening effects resulting from cation-framework interactions and thereby promotes stronger cation-H2 interactions.

Project description:Merging two topical themes in main-group chemistry, namely, cooperative bimetallics and frustrated-Lewis-pair (FLP) activity, this Forum Article focuses on the cooperativity-induced outcomes observed when the tris(alkyl)gallium compound GaR3 (R = CH2SiMe3) is paired with the lithium amide LiTMP (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) or the sterically hindered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) 1,3-bis(tert-butyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (ItBu). When some previously published work are drawn together with new results, unique tandem reactivities are presented that are driven by the steric mismatch between the individual reagents of these multicomponent reagents. Thus, the LiTMP/GaR3 combination, which on its own fails to form a cocomplex, functions as a highly regioselective base (LiTMP)/trap (GaR3) partnership for the metalation of N-heterocycles such as diazines, 1,3-benzoazoles, and 2-picolines in a trans-metal-trapping (TMT) process that stabilizes the emerging sensitive carbanions. Taking advantage of related steric incompatibility, a novel monometallic FLP system pairing GaR3 with ItBu has been developed for the activation of carbonyl compounds (via C═O insertion) and other molecules with acidic hydrogen atoms such as phenol and phenylacetylene. Shedding new light on how these non-cocomplexing partnerships operate and showcasing the potential of gallium reagents to engage in metalation reactions or FLP activations, areas where the use of this group 13 metal is scant, this Forum Article aims to stimulate more interest and activity toward the advancement of organogallium chemistry.

Project description:Liquid complex hydrides are a new class of hydrogen storage materials with several advantages over solid hydrides, e.g. they are flexible in shape, they are a flowing fluid and their convective properties facilitate heat transport. The physical and chemical properties of a gaseous hydride change when the molecules are adsorbed on a material with a large specific surface area, due to the interaction of the adsorbate with the surface of the host material and the reduced number of collisions between the hydride molecules. In this paper we report the synthesis and stabilization of gaseous Ti(BH4)3. The compound was successfully stabilized through adsorption in nanocavities. Ti(BH4)3, upon synthesis in its pure form, spontaneously and rapidly decomposes into diborane and titanium hydride at room temperature in an inert gas, e.g. argon. Ti(BH4)3 adsorbed in the cavities of a metal organic framework is stable for several months at ambient temperature and remains stable up to 350 K under vacuum. The adsorbed Ti(BH4)3 reaches approximately twice the density of the gas phase. The specific surface area (BET, N2 adsorption) of the MOF decreased from 1200 m2 g-1 to 770 m2 g-1 upon Ti(BH4)3 adsorption.

Project description:The mechanism of the catalytic hydrolysis of BH4 - on Au(111) as studied by DFT is reported. The results are compared to the analogous process on Ag(111) that was recently reported. It is found that the borohydride species are adsorbed stronger on the Au0 -NP surface than on the Ag0 -NP surface. The electron affinity of the Au is larger than that of Ag. The results indicate that only two steps of hydrolysis are happening on the Au(111) surface and the reaction mechanism differs significantly from that on the Ag(111) surface. These remarkable results were experimentally verified. Upon hydrolysis, only three hydrogens of BH4 - are transferred to the Au surface, not all four, and H2 generation is enhanced in the presence of surface H atoms. Thus, it is proposed that the BH4 - hydrolysis and reduction mechanisms catalyzed by M0 -NPs depend considerably on the nature of the metal.

Project description:There is a high incidence of radiation enteritis (RE) after abdominal radiotherapy. The occurrence of RE seriously affects the treatment and quality of life of patients; however, its pathogenesis is complex and there are no effective drugs for its prevention or treatment. Intestinal ischemia plays an important role in the occurrence of enteritis. Previous studies have shown that targeting GTP-cyclohydrolase 1 (Gch1) to improve intestinal ischemia could be a new strategy to prevent and treat RE. A high content of the naturally occurring phthalide derivative ligustilide (LIG) has been found in the plant drug Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of LIG on RE. Ionizing radiation (IR) rat and endothelial cell models were used to observe and record rat body weights and stool morphologies, measure intestinal blood perfusion by laser Doppler blood flow imaging, determine the diastolic functions of mesenteric arteries, detect the levels of Gch1/BH4/eNOS pathway-related proteins and regulatory molecules in the mesenteric arteries and endothelial cells, and predict affinity by molecular docking technology. The results showed that LIG significantly improved the body weights, loose stools, intestinal villi lengths, intestinal perfusion and vasodilatory functions of IR rats. LIG also significantly improved Gch1 protein and BH4 levels in the mesenteric arteries and endothelial cells after IR, increased the NO content, reduced superoxide accumulation, and improved p-eNOS (Ser1177) levels in endothelial cells. LIG has good affinity for Gch1, which significantly improves its activity. These results indicate that LIG is the preferred compound for the prevention and treatment of RE by improving intestinal ischemia through the Gch1/BH4/eNOS pathway. This study provides a theoretical basis and new research ideas for the development of new drugs for RE.

Project description:The bicyclic amido-substituted silicon(I) ring compound Si4 {N(SiMe3 )Mes}4 2 (Mes=Mesityl=2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 ) features enhanced zwitterionic character and different reactivity from the analogous compound Si4 {N(SiMe3 )Dipp}4 1 (Dipp=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ) due to the smaller mesityl substituents. In a reaction with the N-heterocyclic carbene NHC Me4 (1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazol-2-ylidene), we observe adduct formation to give Si4 {N(SiMe3 )Mes}4 ⋅ NHC Me4 (3). This adduct reacts further with the Lewis acid BH3 to yield the Lewis acid-base complex Si4 {N(SiMe3 )Mes}4 ⋅ NHC Me4 ⋅ BH3 (4). Coordination of AlBr3 to 2 leads to the adduct 5. Calculated proton affinities and fluoride ion affinities reveal highly Lewis basic and very weak Lewis acidic character of the low-valent silicon atoms in 1 and 2. This is confirmed by protonation of 1 and 2 with Brookharts acid yielding 6 and 7. Reaction with diphenylacetylene only occurs at 111 °C with 2 in toluene and is accompanied by fragmentation of 2 to afford the silacyclopropene 8 and the trisilanorbornadiene species 9.
