Project description:Reactions of Co(OH)2 with the Schiff base bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)ethylenediamine, denoted H2(o-van-en), under different conditions yielded the previously reported complex aqua[bis(3-methoxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)ethylenediamine]cobalt(II), [Co(C18H18N2O4)(H2O)], 1, under anaerobic conditions and two polymorphs of [?-bis(3-methoxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)ethylenediamine]bis{[bis(3-methoxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)ethylenediamine]cobalt(III)} acetonitrile tetrasolvate, [Co2(C18H18N2O4)3]·4CH3CN, i.e. monoclinic 2 and triclinic 3, in the presence of air. Both novel polymorphs were chemically and spectroscopically characterized. Their crystal structures are built up of centrosymmetric dinuclear [Co2(o-van-en)3] complex molecules, in which each CoIII atom is coordinated by one tetradentate dianionic o-van-en ligand in an uncommon bent fashion. The pseudo-octahedral coordination of the CoIII atom is completed by one phenolate O and one amidic N atom of the same arm of the bridging o-van-en ligand. In addition, the asymmetric units of both polymorphs contain two acetonitrile solvent molecules. The polymorphs differ in the packing orders of the dinuclear [Co2(o-van-en)3] complex molecules, i.e. alternating ABABAB in 2 and AAA in 3. In addition, differences in the conformations, the positions of the acetonitrile solvent molecules and the pattern of intermolecular interactions were observed. Hirshfeld surface analysis permits a qualitative inspection of the differences in the intermolecular space in the two polymorphs. A knowledge-based study employing Full Interaction Maps was used to elucidate possible reasons for the polymorphism.

Project description:Single crystals of dibarium cobalt(II) bis-(orthoborate), Ba2Co(BO3)2, have been obtained from the melt. The crystal structure is composed of two isolated (BO3)3- triangles linked to Co2+ cations. The resulting [CoO5] square pyramids and the borate anions make up branched rows extending parallel to [010]. The barium cations occupy two sites in the voids of this arrangement and exhibit coordination numbers of nine each. A comparison with the structures of other A 2 M(BO3)2 compounds reveals a unique five-coordination of the small metal M in the title compound instead of four- or six-coordination for the other A 2 M(BO3)2 compounds with M = Cu, Zn, Mg, Ca, or Cd.

Project description:We have re-investigated the structure and vibrational spectroscopy of the iconic molecule iron pentacarbonyl, Fe(CO)5, in the solid state by neutron scattering methods. In addition to the known C2/c structure, we find that Fe(CO)5 undergoes a displacive ferroelastic phase transition at 105 K to a P1̅ structure. We propose that this is a result of certain intermolecular contacts becoming shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii, resulting in an increased contribution of electrostatic repulsion to these interactions; this is manifested as a strain that breaks the symmetry of the crystal. Evaluation of the strain in a triclinic crystal required a description of the spontaneous strain in terms of a second-rank tensor, something that is feasible with high-precision powder diffraction data but practically very difficult using strain gauges on a single crystal of such low symmetry. The use of neutron vibrational spectroscopy (which is not subject to selection rules) has allowed the observation of all the fundamentals below 700 cm-1 for the first time. This has resulted in the re-assignment of several of the modes. Surprisingly, density functional theory calculations that were carried out to support the spectral assignments provided a poor description of the spectra.

Project description:The centrosymmetric title complex, [μ-ethane-1,2-diylbis(di-phenyl-phosphane)-κ2P:P']bis-[penta-carbonyl-tungsten(0)], [W2(C26H24P2)(CO)10], consists of two W(CO)5 moieties bridged by a bis-(di-phenyl-phosphan-yl)ethane (dppe) ligand. The W0 atom has a slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination environment consisting of 5 carbonyl ligands and one P atom from the bridging dppe ligand with the nearest W0 atom 5.625 (5) Å away. The complex resides on a center of symmetry.

Project description:The main challenge of sodium-ion batteries is cycling stability, which is usually compromised due to strain induced by sodium insertion. Reliable high-voltage cathode materials are needed to compensate the generally lower operating voltages of Na-ion batteries compared to Li-ion ones. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) computations were used to evaluate the thermodynamic, structural, and kinetic properties of the high voltage λ-Mn2O4 and λ-Mn1.5Ni0.5O4 spinel structures as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Determination of the enthalpies of formation reveal the reaction mechanisms (phase separation vs solid solution) during sodiation, while structural analysis underlines the importance of minimizing strain to retain the metastable sodiated phases. For the λ-Mn1.5Ni0.5O4 spinel, a thorough examination of the Mn/Ni cation distribution (dis/ordered variants) was performed. The exact sodiation mechanism was found to be dependent on the transition metal ordering in a similar fashion to the insertion behavior observed in the Li-ion system. The preferred reaction mechanism for the perfectly ordered spinel is phase separation throughout the sodiation range, while in the disordered spinel, the phase separation terminates in the 0.625 < x < 0.875 concentration range and is followed by a solid solution insertion reaction. Na-ion diffusion in the spinel lattice was studied using DFT as well. Energy barriers of 0.3-0.4 eV were predicted for the pure spinel, comparing extremely well with the ones for the Li-ion and being significantly better than the barriers reported for multivalent ions. Additionally, Na-ion macroscopic diffusion through the 8a-16c-8a 3D network was demonstrated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. For the λ-Mn1.5Ni0.5O4, MD simulations at 600 K bring forward a normal to inverse spinel half-transformation, common for spinels at high temperatures, showing the contrast in Na-ion diffusion between the normal and inverse lattice. The observed Ni migration to the tetrahedral sites at room temperature MD simulations explains the kinetic limitations experienced experimentally. Therefore, this work provides a detailed understanding of the (de)sodiation mechanisms of high voltage λ-Mn2O4 and λ-Mn1.5Ni0.5O4 spinel structures, which are of potential interest as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Project description:Microalgae and cyanobacteria contribute roughly half of the global photosynthetic carbon assimilation. Faced with limited access to CO2 in aquatic environments, which can vary daily or hourly, these microorganisms have evolved use of an efficient CO2 concentrating mechanism (CCM) to accumulate high internal concentrations of inorganic carbon (Ci ) to maintain photosynthetic performance. For eukaryotic algae, a combination of molecular, genetic and physiological studies using the model organism Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, have revealed the function and molecular characteristics of many CCM components, including active Ci uptake systems. Fundamental to eukaryotic Ci uptake systems are Ci transporters/channels located in membranes of various cell compartments, which together facilitate the movement of Ci from the environment into the chloroplast, where primary CO2 assimilation occurs. Two putative plasma membrane Ci transporters, HLA3 and LCI1, are reportedly involved in active Ci uptake. Based on previous studies, HLA3 clearly plays a meaningful role in HCO3- transport, but the function of LCI1 has not yet been thoroughly investigated so remains somewhat obscure. Here we report a crystal structure of the full-length LCI1 membrane protein to reveal LCI1 structural characteristics, as well as in vivo physiological studies in an LCI1 loss-of-function mutant to reveal the Ci species preference for LCI1. Together, these new studies demonstrate LCI1 plays an important role in active CO2 uptake and that LCI1 likely functions as a plasma membrane CO2 channel, possibly a gated channel.

Project description:The cobalt carbonate hydroxide Co2CO3(OH)2 is a technologically important solid which is used as a precursor for the synthesis of cobalt oxides in a wide range of applications. It also has relevance as a potential immobilizer of the toxic element cobalt in the natural environment, but its detailed crystal structure is so far unknown. The structure of Co2CO3(OH)2 has now been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) simulations and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements on samples synthesized via deposition from aqueous solution. Two possible monoclinic phases are considered, with closely related but symmetrically different crystal structures, based on those of the minerals malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] and rosasite [Cu1.5Zn0.5CO3(OH)2], as well as an orthorhombic phase that can be seen as a common parent structure for the two monoclinic phases, and a triclinic phase with the structure of the mineral kolwezite [Cu1.34Co0.66CO3(OH)2]. The DFT simulations predict that the rosasite-like and malachite-like phases are two different local minima of the potential energy landscape for Co2CO3(OH)2 and are practically degenerate in energy, while the orthorhombic and triclinic structures are unstable and experience barrierless transformations to the malachite phase upon relaxation. The best fit to the PXRD data is obtained using a rosasite model [monoclinic with space group P1121/n and cell parameters a = 3.1408 (4) Å, b = 12.2914 (17) Å, c = 9.3311 (16) Å and γ = 82.299 (16)°]. However, some features of the PXRD pattern are still not well accounted for by this refinement and the residual parameters are relatively poor. The relationship between the rosasite and malachite phases of Co2CO3(OH)2 is discussed and it is shown that they can be seen as polytypes. Based on the similar calculated stabilities of these two polytypes, it is speculated that some level of stacking disorder could account for the poor fit of the PXRD data. The possibility that Co2CO3(OH)2 could crystallize, under different growth conditions, as either rosasite or malachite, or even as a stacking-disordered phase intermediate between the two, requires further investigation.

Project description:The title compound, tri-carbonyl-tris-(dimethyl sulfoxide)-molybdenum, [Mo(C2H6OS)3(CO)3] or fac-[Mo(CO)3(DMSO)3], crystallizes in the triclinic space group P with two mol-ecules in the unit cell. The geometry around the central molybdenum is slightly distorted octa-hedral and the facial isomer is found exclusively. The packing within the crystal is stabilized by three-dimensional non-classical inter-molecular hydrogen-bonding contacts between individual methyl substituents of di-methyl sulfoxide and the oxygen atoms of either another di-methyl sulfoxide or a carbonyl ligand on adjacent complex mol-ecules. The observed bond lengths in the carbonyl ligands and between carbonyl carbon atoms and molybdenum are correlated to the observed FT-IR bands for the carbonyl stretches and compared to respective metrical parameters of related complexes.

Project description:The title silver carbonate iodide, Ag10(CO3)3I4, deca-silver(I) tris-(carbonate) tetra-iodide, was recently reported as a precursor of the new superionic conductor Ag17(CO3)3I11. Ag10(CO3)3I4, was prepared by heating a stoichiometric powder mixture of AgI and Ag2CO3 at 430 K. A single-crystal suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis was obtained by slow cooling of a melt with an AgI-rich composition down from 453 K. Ag10(CO3)3I4 exhibits a layered crystal structure packed along [10], in which Ag atoms are inter-calated between the layers of hexa-gonally close-packed I atoms, and CO3 groups. Up to now, Cs3Pb2(CO3)3I is the only other compound containing carbonate groups and iodide ions registered in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database.

Project description:DNA polymerase λ (pol λ) functions in DNA repair with its main roles considered to be filling short gaps during repair of double-strand breaks by nonhomologous end joining and during base excision repair. As indicated by structural and biochemical studies over the past 10 years, pol λ shares many common properties with other family X siblings (pol β, pol μ, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase) but also has unique structural features that determine its specific functions. In this review, we consider how structural studies over the past decade furthered our understanding of the behavior and biological roles of pol λ.
