X-ray diffraction and thermoanalytical datasets of precursors of the Gd₆UO_12-δ phase processed by combined mechanochemical-thermal routes.

ABSTRACT: The datasets presented here are related to the research paper entitled "Disordered Gd₆UO_12-δ with the cation antisite defects prepared by a combined mechanochemical-thermal method"[1]. The datasets complement the findings [1] on the effect of the combined mechanochemical-thermal processing of the stoichiometric mixture of solid precursors (3Gd₂O₃ + UO₂) on the formation of Gd₆UO_12-δ phase. In this article, we provide (i) X-ray diffraction (XRD) data of the 3Gd₂O₃ + UO₂ mixture milled for 12 h, (ii) the refined XRD data of the non-milled 3Gd₂O₃ + UO₂ mixture after annealing at 1282 °C for 3 h in air, and (iii) the thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) data for non-milled and mechanically preactivated 3Gd₂O₃ + UO₂ mixture measured in air at a heat rate of 10 K/min.

Coffinite formation from UO2+x.

Project description:Most of the highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel (SNF) around the world is destined for final disposal in deep-mined geological repositories. At the end of the fuel's useful life in a reactor, about 96% of the SNF is still UO2. Thus, the behaviour of UO2 in SNF must be understood and evaluated under the weathering conditions of geologic disposal, which extend to periods of hundreds of thousands of years. There is ample evidence from nature that many uranium deposits have experienced conditions for which the formation of coffinite, USiO4, has been favoured over uraninite, UO2+x, during subsequent alteration events. Thus, coffinite is an important alteration product of the UO2 in SNF. Here, we present the first evidence of the formation of coffinite on the surface of UO2 at the time scale of laboratory experiments in a solution saturated with respect to amorphous silica at pH = 9, room temperature and under anoxic conditions.

Thermodynamic and Structural Modelling of Non-Stoichiometric Ln-Doped UO2 Solid Solutions, Ln = {La, Pr, Nd, Gd}.

Project description:Available data on the dependence of the equilibrium chemical potential of oxygen on degrees of doping, z, and non-stoichiometry, x, y, in U1-z Ln z O2+0.5(x-y) fluorite solid solutions and data on the dependence of the lattice parameter, a, on the same variables are combined within a unified structural-thermodynamic model. The thermodynamic model fits experimental isotherms of the oxygen potential under the assumptions of a non-ideal mixing of the endmembers, UO2, UO2.5, UO1.5, LnO1.5, and Ln 0.5U0.5O2, and of a significant reduction in the configurational entropy arising from short-range ordering (SRO) within cation-anion distributions. The structural model further investigates the SRO in terms of constraints on admissible values of cation coordination numbers and, building on these constraints, fits the lattice parameter as a function of z, y, and x. Linking together the thermodynamic and structural models allows predicting the lattice parameter as a function of z, T and the oxygen partial pressure. The model elucidates contrasting structural and thermodynamic changes due to the doping with LaO1.5, on the one hand, and with NdO1.5 and GdO1.5, on the other hand. An increased oxidation resistance in the case of Gd and Nd is attributed to strain effects caused by the lattice contraction due to the doping and to an increased thermodynamic cost of a further contraction required by the oxidation.

Locating hydrogen positions in the autunite mineral metatorbernite [Cu(UO2)2(PO4)2·8H2O]: a combined approach using neutron powder diffraction and computational modelling.

Project description:Metatorbernite [Cu(UO2)2(PO4)2·8H2O] is a promising remediation material for environmental uranium contamination. Previous X-ray diffraction studies have been unable to definitively locate hydrogen positions within metatorbernite, which are key to determining the hydrogen-bond network that helps to stabilize the structure. Here, hydrogen positions have been determined using a combination of neutron powder diffraction and the computational modelling technique ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS). Atomic coordinates determined through Rietveld analysis of neutron powder diffraction data are in excellent agreement with the minimum energy configuration predicted by AIRSS; thus, simulations confirm that our proposed model likely represents the global minimum configuration. Two groups of water molecules exist within the metatorbernite structure: free water and copper-coordinating water. Free water molecules are held within the structure by hydrogen bonding only, whilst the coordinating water molecules bond to copper in the equatorial positions to produce a 4 + 2 Jahn-Teller octahedra. The successful agreement between neutron powder diffraction data and AIRSS suggests that this combined approach has excellent potential for the study of other (trans)uranium materials in which hydrogen bonding plays a key role in phase stability.

Nanoscale mechanism of UO2 formation through uranium reduction by magnetite.

Project description:Uranium (U) is a ubiquitous element in the Earth's crust at ~2 ppm. In anoxic environments, soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) is reduced and immobilized. The underlying reduction mechanism is unknown but likely of critical importance to explain the geochemical behavior of U. Here, we tackle the mechanism of reduction of U(VI) by the mixed-valence iron oxide, magnetite. Through high-end spectroscopic and microscopic tools, we demonstrate that the reduction proceeds first through surface-associated U(VI) to form pentavalent U, U(V). U(V) persists on the surface of magnetite and is further reduced to tetravalent UO2 as nanocrystals (~1-2 nm) with random orientations inside nanowires. Through nanoparticle re-orientation and coalescence, the nanowires collapse into ordered UO2 nanoclusters. This work provides evidence for a transient U nanowire structure that may have implications for uranium isotope fractionation as well as for the molecular-scale understanding of nuclear waste temporal evolution and the reductive remediation of uranium contamination.

Defect segregation facilitates oxygen transport at fluorite UO2 grain boundaries.

Project description:An important challenge for modelling transport in materials for energy applications is that in most applications they are polycrystalline, and hence it is critical to understand the properties in the presence of grain boundaries. Moreover, most grain boundaries are not pristine stoichiometric interfaces and hence dopants are likely to play a significant role. In this paper, we describe our recent work on using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to model the effect of doped grain boundaries on oxygen transport of fluorite structured UO2. UO2, much like other fluorite grain boundaries, are found to be sinks for oxygen vacancy segregation relative to the grain interior, thus facilitating oxygen transport. Fission products further enhance diffusivity via strong interactions between the impurities and oxygen defects. Doping produces a striking structural alteration in the Σ5 class of grain boundaries that enhances oxygen diffusivity even further. Crystal structure of [UO2(NH3)5]NO3·NH3.

Project description:Penta-ammine dioxide uranium(V) nitrate ammonia (1/1), [UO2(NH3)5]NO3·NH3, was obtained in the form of yellow crystals from the reaction of caesium uranyl nitrate, Cs[UO2(NO3)3], and uranium tetra-fluoride, UF4, in dry liquid ammonia. The [UO2]+ cation is coordinated by five ammine ligands. The resulting [UO2(NH3)5] coordination polyhedron is best described as a penta-gonal bipyramid with the O atoms forming the apices. In the crystal, numerous N-H?N and N-H?O hydrogen bonds are present between the cation, anion and solvent mol-ecules, leading to a three-dimensional network.

On the Role of the Electrical Field in Spark Plasma Sintering of UO2+x.

Project description:The electric field has a large effect on the stoichiometry and grain growth of UO2+x during Spark Plasma Sintering. UO2+x is gradually reduced to UO2.00 as a function of sintering temperature and time. A gradient in the oxidation state within the pellets is observed in intermediate conditions. The shape of the gradient depends unequivocally on the direction of the electrical field. The positive surface of the pellet shows a higher oxidation state compared to the negative one. An area with larger grain size is found close to the positive electrode, but not in contact with it. We interpret these findings with the redistribution of defects under an electric field, which affect the stoichiometry of UO2+x and thus the cation diffusivity. The results bear implications for understanding the electric field assisted sintering of UO2 and non-stoichiometric oxides in general.

Impact of Controlled Storage Conditions on the Hydrolysis and Surface Morphology of Amorphous-UO3.

Project description:The hydration and morphological effects of amorphous (A)-UO3 following storage under varying temperature and relative humidity have been investigated. This study provides valuable insight into U-oxide speciation following aging, the U-oxide quantitative morphological data set, and, overall, the characterization of nuclear material provenance. A-UO3 was synthesized via the washed uranyl peroxide synthetic route and aged based on a 3-factor circumscribed central composite design of experiment. Target aging times include 2.57, 7.00, 14.0, 21.0, and 25.4 days, temperatures of 5.51, 15.0, 30.0, 45.0, and 54.5 °C, and relative humidities of 14.2, 30.0, 55.0, 80.0, and 95.8% were examined. Following aging, crystallographic changes were quantified via powder X-ray diffraction and an internal standard Rietveld refinement method was used to confirm the hydration of A-UO3 to crystalline schoepite phases. The particle morphology from scanning electron microscopy images was quantified using both the Morphological Analysis of MAterials software and machine learning. Results from the machine learning were processed via agglomerative hierarchical clustering analysis to distinguish trends in morphological attributes from the aging study. Significantly hydrated samples were found to have a much larger, plate-like morphology in comparison to the unaged controls. Predictive modeling via a response surface methodology determined that while aging time, temperature, and relative humidity all have a quantifiable effect on A-UO3 crystallographic and morphological changes, relative humidity has the most significant impact.

Experimental datasets on processed eggshell membrane powder for wound healing.

Project description:Eggshell (ES) and eggshell membrane (ESM) is a significant byproduct of the egg producing industry (Ahmed et al., 2019). Many studies have been undertaken to utilize ES waste for potential value added applications (Cordeiro and Hincke, 2011). Described here are the datasets from our evaluation of processed eggshell membrane powder (PEP) as a wound healing product using the mouse excisional wound splinting model (Ahmed et al., 2019). PEP biomaterial was characterized by proteomics using various extraction and solubilization strategies including moderate (lithium dodecyl sulphate (LDS) and urea/ammonium bicarbonate) and harsh conditions (3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) and NaOH/dimethylsulfoxide) in order to progressively overcome its stable, insoluble nature (Ahmed et al., 2019, Ahmed et al., 2017). Analysis of proteomic data allowed the relative abundance of the main PEP protein constituents to be determined. The efficacy of PEP for promotion of wound healing was assessed using the mouse excisional wound splinting model, and well-established semi-quantitative histological scoring. Fast selective homogeneous extraction of UO22+ with carboxyl-functionalised task-specific ionic liquids.

Project description:The carboxyl-functionalised task-specific ionic liquid of 1-carboxymethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide ([HOOCmim][NTf2]) was used as solvent and extractant for UO22+ extraction from aqueous solution. A homogeneous phase of [HOOCmim][NTf2]-H2O system could be achieved at 75 °C, and 86.8 ± 4.8% of UO22+ was separated from the aqueous solution after vibrating for only 1 min. Furthermore, nearly 97.3 ± 2.9% of UO22+ was stripped from [HOOCmim][NTf2] phase by 1 M HNO3 solution. K+, Na+, Mg2+, Dy3+, La3+, and Eu3+ have little influence on the homogeneous extraction of UO22+, and the extraction efficiency of UO22+ still remained at ca. 80%. Experimental and theoretical study on the selectivity of [HOOCmim][NTf2]-H2O system were performed for the first time. Density functional theory calculation indicates that the solvent effect plays a significant role on the selectivity of [HOOCmim][NTf2]-H2O.
