Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes Using an Air-Stable Base-Metal Catalyst.

ABSTRACT: The reduction of nitroarenes to anilines as well as azobenzenes to hydrazobenzenes using a single base-metal catalyst is reported. The hydrogenation reactions are performed with an air-and moisture-stable manganese catalyst and proceed under relatively mild reaction conditions. The transformation tolerates a broad range of functional groups, affording aniline derivatives and hydrazobenzenes in high yields. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds via a bifunctional activation involving metal-ligand cooperative catalysis.

Chemoselective Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Ketones and Aldehydes with a Well-Defined Base-Metal Catalyst.

Project description:Hydrogenation reactions are fundamental functional group transformations in chemical synthesis. Here, we introduce an electrochemical method for the hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes by in situ formation of a Mn-H species. We utilise protons and electric current as surrogate for H2 and a base-metal complex to form selectively the alcohols. The method is chemoselective for the hydrogenation of C=O bonds over C=C bonds. Mechanistic studies revealed initial 3 e- reduction of the catalyst forming the steady state species [Mn2 (H-1 L)(CO)6 ]- . Subsequently, we assume protonation, reduction and internal proton shift forming the hydride species. Finally, the transfer of the hydride and a proton to the ketone yields the alcohol and the steady state species is regenerated via reduction. The interplay of two manganese centres and the internal proton relay represent the key features for ketone and aldehyde reduction as the respective mononuclear complex and the complex without the proton relay are barely active.

Metal-free hydrogenation catalyzed by an air-stable borane: use of solvent as a frustrated Lewis base.

Project description:In recent years 'frustrated Lewis pairs' (FLPs) have been shown to be effective metal-free catalysts for the hydrogenation of many unsaturated substrates. Even so, limited functional-group tolerance restricts the range of solvents in which FLP-mediated reactions can be performed, with all FLP-mediated hydrogenations reported to date carried out in non-donor hydrocarbon or chlorinated solvents. Herein we report that the bulky Lewis acids B(C6Cl5)x(C6F5)(3-x) (x=0-3) are capable of heterolytic H2 activation in the strong-donor solvent THF, in the absence of any additional Lewis base. This allows metal-free catalytic hydrogenations to be performed in donor solvent media under mild conditions; these systems are particularly effective for the hydrogenation of weakly basic substrates, including the first examples of metal-free catalytic hydrogenation of furan heterocycles. The air-stability of the most effective borane, B(C6Cl5)(C6F5)2, makes this a practically simple reaction method.

Highly-efficient RuNi single-atom alloy catalysts toward chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes.

Project description:The design and exploitation of high-performance catalysts have gained considerable attention in selective hydrogenation reactions, but remain a huge challenge. Herein, we report a RuNi single atom alloy (SAA) in which Ru single atoms are anchored onto Ni nanoparticle surface via Ru-Ni coordination accompanied with electron transfer from sub-surface Ni to Ru. The optimal catalyst 0.4% RuNi SAA exhibits simultaneously improved activity (TOF value: 4293 h-1) and chemoselectivity toward selective hydrogenation of 4-nitrostyrene to 4-aminostyrene (yield: >99%), which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest level compared with reported heterogeneous catalysts. In situ experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the Ru-Ni interfacial sites as intrinsic active centers facilitate the preferential cleavage of N-O bond with a decreased energy barrier by 0.28 eV. In addition, the Ru-Ni synergistic catalysis promotes the formation of intermediates (C8H7NO* and C8H7NOH*) and accelerates the rate-determining step (hydrogenation of C8H7NOH*).

Facile Transfer Hydrogenation of N-Heteroarenes and Nitroarenes Using Magnetically Recoverable Pd@SPIONs Catalyst.

Project description:Catalysts with active, selective, and reusable features are desirable for sustainable development. The present investigation involved the synthesis and characterization of bear-surfaced ultrasmall Pd particles (<1 nm) loaded onto the surface of magnetic nanoparticles (8-10 nm). The amount of Pd loading onto the surface of magnetite is recorded as 2.8 wt %. The characterization process covered the utilization of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods. The Pd@Fe3O4 catalyst has shown remarkable efficacy in the hydrogenation of quinoline, resulting in the production of >99% N-ring hydrogenated (py-THQ) product. Additionally, the catalyst facilitated the conversion of nitroarenes into their corresponding aniline derivatives, where hydrogen was achieved by H2O molecules with the aid of tetrahydroxydiboron (THDB) as an equilibrium supportive at 80 °C in 1 h. The high efficiency of a transfer hydrogenation catalyst is closely related to the metal-support synergistic effect. The broader scope of functional group tolerance is evaluated. The potential mechanism underlying the hydrogenation process has been elucidated through the utilization of isotopic labeling investigations. The application of the heterocyclic compound hydrogenation reaction is extended to formulate the medicinally important tubular polymerization inhibitor drug synthesis. The investigation of the recyclability of Pd@Fe3O4 has been conducted.

An Adaptive Rhodium Catalyst to Control the Hydrogenation Network of Nitroarenes.

Project description:An adaptive catalytic system that provides control over the nitroarene hydrogenation network to prepare a wide range of aniline and hydroxylamine derivatives is presented. This system takes advantage of a delicate interplay between a rhodium(III) center and a Lewis acidic borane introduced in the secondary coordination sphere of the metal. The high chemoselectivity of the catalyst in the presence of various potentially vulnerable functional groups and its readiness to be deployed at a preparative scale illustrate its practicality. Mechanistic studies and density functional theory (DFT) methods were used to shed light on the mode of functioning of the catalyst and elucidate the origin of adaptivity. The competition for interaction with boron between a solvent molecule and a substrate was found crucial for adaptivity. When operating in THF, the reduction network stops at the hydroxylamine platform, whereas the reaction can be directed to the aniline platform in toluene.

Iron phosphide nanocrystals as an air-stable heterogeneous catalyst for liquid-phase nitrile hydrogenation.

Project description:Iron-based heterogeneous catalysts are ideal metal catalysts owing to their abundance and low-toxicity. However, conventional iron nanoparticle catalysts exhibit extremely low activity in liquid-phase reactions and lack air stability. Previous attempts to encapsulate iron nanoparticles in shell materials toward air stability improvement were offset by the low activity of the iron nanoparticles. To overcome the trade-off between activity and stability in conventional iron nanoparticle catalysts, we developed air-stable iron phosphide nanocrystal catalysts. The iron phosphide nanocrystal exhibits high activity for liquid-phase nitrile hydrogenation, whereas the conventional iron nanoparticles demonstrate no activity. Furthermore, the air stability of the iron phosphide nanocrystal allows facile immobilization on appropriate supports, wherein TiO2 enhances the activity. The resulting TiO2-supported iron phosphide nanocrystal successfully converts various nitriles to primary amines and demonstrates high reusability. The development of air-stable and active iron phosphide nanocrystal catalysts significantly expands the application scope of iron catalysts.

Stable single platinum atoms trapped in sub-nanometer cavities in 12CaO·7Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> for chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes.

Project description:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted significant attention because they exhibit unique catalytic performance due to their ideal structure. However, maintaining atomically dispersed metal under high temperature, while achieving high catalytic activity remains a formidable challenge. In this work, we stabilize single platinum atoms within sub-nanometer surface cavities in well-defined 12CaO·7Al2O3 (C12A7) crystals through theoretical prediction and experimental process. This approach utilizes the interaction of isolated metal anions with the positively charged surface cavities of C12A7, which allows for severe reduction conditions up to 600 °C. The resulting catalyst is stable and highly active toward the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes with a much higher turnover frequency (up to 25772 h-1) than well-studied Pt-based catalysts. The high activity and selectivity result from the formation of stable trapped single Pt atoms, which leads to heterolytic cleavage of hydrogen molecules in a reaction that involves the nitro group being selectively adsorbed on C12A7 surface.

Supported Bimetallic AuPd Nanoparticles as a Catalyst for the Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes.

Project description:The solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was carried out using a supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by the modified impregnation method (MIm), as efficient catalyst >99% yield of aniline (AN) was obtained after 15 h at 90 °C, 3 bar H₂ that can be used without any further purification or separation, therefore reducing cost and energy input. Supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by MIm, was found to be active and stable even after four recycle experiments, whereas the same catalyst prepared by SIm was deactivated during the recycle experiments. The most effective catalyst was tested for the chemoselective hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) to 4-chloroaniline (CAN). The activation energy of CNB to CAN was found to be 25 kJ mol-1, while that of CNB to AN was found to be 31 kJ mol-1. Based on this, the yield of CAN was maximized (92%) by the lowering the reaction temperature to 25 °C.
