ABSTRACT: Muscle fatigue is considered as a risk factor for developing playing-related muscular disorders among professional pianists and could affect musical performance. This study investigated in 50 pianists the effect of fatiguing repetitive piano sequences on the development of forearm muscle fatigue and on piano performance parameters. Results showed signs of myoelectric manifestation of fatigue in the 42-electromyographic bipolar electrodes positioned on the forearm to record finger and wrist flexor and extensor muscles, through a significant non-constant decrease of instantaneous median frequency during two repetitive Digital (right-hand 16-tones sequence) and Chord (right-hand chords sequence) excerpts, with extensor muscles showing greater signs of fatigue than flexor muscles. In addition, muscle fatigue negatively affected key velocity, a central feature of piano sound intensity, in both Digital and Chord excerpts, and note-events, a fundamental aspect of musicians' performance parameter, in the Chord excerpt only. This result highlights that muscle fatigue may alter differently pianists' musical performance according to the characteristics of the piece played.

Project description:The oxygen-conforming response (OCR) of skeletal muscle refers to a downregulation of muscle force for a given muscle activation when oxygen delivery (O2D) is reduced, which is rapidly reversed when O2D is restored. We tested the hypothesis that the OCR exists in voluntary human exercise and results in compensatory changes in muscle activation to maintain force output, thereby altering perception of effort. In eight men and eight women, electromyography (EMG), oxyhemoglobin (O2Hb) and deoxyhemoglobin (HHb), forearm blood flow (FBF), and task effort awareness (TEA) were measured. Participants completed two nonfatiguing rhythmic handgrip tests consisting of 5-min steady state (SS) followed by two bouts of 2-min brachial artery compression to reduce FBF by ~50% of SS (C1 and C2), separated by 2 min of no compression (NC1) and ending with 2 min of no compression (NC2). When FBF was compromised during C1, EMG/Force (1.58?±?0.39) increased compared with SS (1.31?±?0.33, P = 0.001). However, EMG/Force was not restored upon FBF restoration at NC1 (1.48?±?0.38, P = 0.479), consistent with C1 evoking skeletal muscle fatigue. When FBF was compromised during C2, EMG/Force increased (1.73?±?0.50) compared with NC1 (1.48?±?0.38, P = 0.013). EMG/Force returned to NC1 levels during NC2 (1.50?±?0.39, P = 0.016), consistent with an OCR in C2. TEA (SS 2.2?±?2.3, C1 3.9?±?2.5, NC1 3.4?±?2.7, C2 4.6?±?2.7, NC2 3.9?±?2.8) mirrored changes in EMG. It is noteworthy that during the second compromise and then restoration of muscle oxygenation EMG and TEA were rapidly restored to precompromise levels. We interpreted these findings to support the existence of an OCR and its ability to rapidly modify perception of effort during voluntary exercise. NEW & NOTEWORTHY In healthy individuals, when force output is maintained during rhythmic handgrip exercise, muscle activation and perception of effort rapidly increase with compromised muscle oxygen delivery (O2D) and then return to precompromised levels when muscle O2D is restored. These findings suggest that an oxygen-conforming response (OCR) exists and is able to modify perception of effort during voluntary exercise. Therefore, similar to fatigue, an OCR may have implications for exercise tolerance.

Project description:Measuring musical abilities in childhood can be challenging. When music training and maturation occur simultaneously, it is difficult to separate the effects of specific experience from age-based changes in cognitive and motor abilities. The goal of this study was to develop age-equivalent scores for two measures of musical ability that could be reliably used with school-aged children (7-13) with and without musical training. The children's Rhythm Synchronization Task (c-RST) and the children's Melody Discrimination Task (c-MDT) were adapted from adult tasks developed and used in our laboratories. The c-RST is a motor task in which children listen and then try to synchronize their taps with the notes of a woodblock rhythm while it plays twice in a row. The c-MDT is a perceptual task in which the child listens to two melodies and decides if the second was the same or different. We administered these tasks to 213 children in music camps (musicians, n = 130) and science camps (non-musicians, n = 83). We also measured children's paced tapping, non-paced tapping, and phonemic discrimination as baseline motor and auditory abilities We estimated internal-consistency reliability for both tasks, and compared children's performance to results from studies with adults. As expected, musically trained children outperformed those without music lessons, scores decreased as difficulty increased, and older children performed the best. Using non-musicians as a reference group, we generated a set of age-based z-scores, and used them to predict task performance with additional years of training. Years of lessons significantly predicted performance on both tasks, over and above the effect of age. We also assessed the relation between musician's scores on music tasks, baseline tasks, auditory working memory, and non-verbal reasoning. Unexpectedly, musician children outperformed non-musicians in two of three baseline tasks. The c-RST and c-MDT fill an important need for researchers interested in evaluating the impact of musical training in longitudinal studies, those interested in comparing the efficacy of different training methods, and for those assessing the impact of training on non-musical cognitive abilities such as language processing.
