Exclusively Relativistic: Periodic Trends in the Melting and Boiling Points of Group 12.

ABSTRACT: First-principles simulations can advance our understanding of phase transitions but are often too costly for the heavier elements, which require a relativistic treatment. Addressing this challenge, we recently composed an indirect approach: A precise incremental calculation of absolute Gibbs energies for the solid and liquid with a relativistic Hamiltonian that enables an accurate determination of melting and boiling points (MPs and BPs). Here, we apply this approach to the Group 12 elements Zn, Cd, Hg, and Cn, whose MPs and BPs we calculate with a mean absolute deviation of only 5 % and 1 %, respectively, while we confirm the previously predicted liquid aggregate state of Cn. At a non-relativistic level of theory, we obtain surprisingly similar MPs and BPs of 650±30 K and 1250±20 K, suggesting that periodic trends in this group are exclusively relativistic in nature. Ultimately, we discuss these results and their implication for Groups 11 and 14.

Homogeneous boiling over melting ice.

Project description:We report on discovering the homogeneous boiling within a liquid film residual resting in equilibrium over a melting ice block. This phenomenon was induced via longwave infrared radiation generated by a continuous wave [Formula: see text] laser. This investigation employed a high-speed camera and the Schlieren visualization technique. The study discovered that the presence of ice substantially lowered the minimum power intensity required for homogeneous nucleation to occur. This observation is counterintuitive, as one might intuitively believe ice presence would result in enhanced cooling, demanding a higher power to initiate boiling. We offer three reasons for this observation: (1) the suppression of convective dissipation of the heat via the ice below the melted water, (2) instabilities caused by substantial temperature gradients between the irradiated meltwater and ice surface, and (3) instabilities caused by pressure gradients due to uneven melting of the ice surface. The effect of impurities was also tested by adding borax to the ice. Borated ice exhibited homogeneous and heterogeneous boiling simultaneously, demonstrating an even lower power intensity to initiate thermocavitation.

Group Contribution Estimation of Ionic Liquid Melting Points: Critical Evaluation and Refinement of Existing Models.

Project description:While several group contribution method (GCM) models have been developed in recent years for the prediction of ionic liquid (IL) properties, some challenges exist in their effective application. Firstly, the models have been developed and tested based on different datasets; therefore, direct comparison based on reported statistical measures is not reliable. Secondly, many of the existing models are limited in the range of ILs for which they can be used due to the lack of functional group parameters. In this paper, we examine two of the most diverse GCMs for the estimation of IL melting point; a key property in the selection and design of ILs for materials and energy applications. A comprehensive database consisting of over 1300 data points for 933 unique ILs, has been compiled and used to critically evaluate the two GCMs. One of the GCMs has been refined by introducing new functional groups and reparametrized to give improved performance for melting point estimation over a wider range of ILs. This work will aid in the targeted design of ILs for materials and energy applications.

Rare and Nonexistent Nitrosyls: Periodic Trends and Relativistic Effects in Ruthenium and Osmium Porphyrin-Based {MNO}<sup>7</sup> Complexes.

Project description:Relativistic and nonrelativistic density functional theory calculations were used to investigate rare or nonexistent ruthenium and osmium analogues of nitrosylhemes. Strong ligand field effects and, to a lesser degree, relativistic effects were found to destabilize {RuNO}7 porphyrins relative to their {FeNO}7 analogues. Substantially stronger relativistic effects account for the even greater instability and/or nonexistence of {OsNO}7 porphyrin derivatives.

Chirality and Relativistic Effects in Os3(CO)12.

Project description:The energy and structural parameters were obtained for all forms of the carbonyl complex of osmium Os3(CO)12 with D3h and D3 symmetries using density functional theory (DFT) methods. The calculations took into account various levels of relativistic effects, including those associated with nonconservation of spatial parity. It was shown that the ground state of Os3(CO)12 corresponds to the D3 symmetry and thus may be characterized either as left-twisted (D3S) or right-twisted (D3R). The D3S↔D3R transitions occur through the D3h transition state with an activation barrier of ~10-14 kJ/mol. Parity violation energy difference (PVED) between D3S and D3R states equals to ~5 × 10-10 kJ/mol. An unusual three-center exchange interaction was found inside the {Os3} fragment. It was found that the cooperative effects of the mutual influence of osmium atoms suppress the chirality of the electron system in the cluster.

Melting Points of OPC and OPC3 Water Models.

Project description:A recently introduced family of globally optimal water models, OPC, has shown promise in a variety of biomolecular simulations, but properties of these water models outside of the liquid phase remain mostly unexplored. Here, we contribute to filling the gap by reporting melting temperatures of ice I h of OPC and OPC3 water models. Through the direct coexistence method, which we make available in the AMBER package, the melting points of OPC and OPC3 are estimated as 242 and 210 K, similar to TIP4P-Ew and SPC/E models, respectively, and appreciably below the experimental value of 273.15 K under 1 bar pressure. Water models of the OPC family were optimized to best reproduce water properties in the liquid phase where these models offer noteworthy accuracy advantages over many models of previous generations. It is not surprising that the accuracy of OPC models in describing the phase transition to the solid state does not appear to offer similar improvements. The new anisotropic barostat option implemented in AMBER may benefit system preparation and simulation outside of the direct coexistence applications, such as modeling of membranes or very long DNA strands.

Bisphosphonium cation based metal halide glass scintillators with tunable melting points.

Project description:Organic-inorganic metal halide (OIMH) glass offers the advantages of large-scale production, high transparency, and minimal light scattering. However, undesired crystallization in OIMH glass can occur, leading to deteriorated transparency. Herein, a series of bisphosphonium organic cations were designed to construct Mn-based metal halide crystals with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) near unity, alongside the development of highly thermally stable OIMH glasses. Two strategies were employed to lower the melting point of OIMH: alkyl chain elongation and fluorine substitution. The (Hex-3,4-2F)MnBr4·MeOH (Hex-3,4-2F = hexane-1,6-diylbis((3,4-difluorobenzyl)diphenylphosphonium)) crystal delivers a glass transition temperature of 100 °C and the highest T g/T m ratio (0.82) among OIMHs. The resulting OIMH glass exhibits a PLQY of 47.6%, achieves an impressive resolution of 25 lp mm-1 in X-ray imaging, and remains transparent even after being heated at 90 °C for six weeks. These bisphosphonium-based OIMH glasses present a feasible design for the practical application of OIMH glasses in radiation detection.

On the correlation between hydrogen bonding and melting points in the inositols.

Project description:Inositol, 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydroxycyclohexane, exists in nine stereoisomers with different crystal structures and melting points. In a previous paper on the relationship between the melting points of the inositols and the hydrogen-bonding patterns in their crystal structures [Simperler et al. (2006 ▶). CrystEngComm 8, 589], it was noted that although all inositol crystal structures known at that time contained 12 hydrogen bonds per molecule, their melting points span a large range of about 170 °C. Our preliminary investigations suggested that the highest melting point must be corrected for the effect of molecular symmetry, and that the three lowest melting points may need to be revised. This prompted a full investigation, with additional experiments on six of the nine inositols. Thirteen new phases were discovered; for all of these their crystal structures were examined. The crystal structures of eight ordered phases could be determined, of which seven were obtained from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data. Five additional phases turned out to be rotator phases and only their unit cells could be determined. Two previously unknown melting points were measured, as well as most enthalpies of melting. Several previously reported melting points were shown to be solid-to-solid phase transitions or decomposition points. Our experiments have revealed a complex picture of phases, rotator phases and phase transitions, in which a simple correlation between melting points and hydrogen-bonding patterns is not feasible.

How accurately can we predict the melting points of drug-like compounds?

Project description:This article contributes a highly accurate model for predicting the melting points (MPs) of medicinal chemistry compounds. The model was developed using the largest published data set, comprising more than 47k compounds. The distributions of MPs in drug-like and drug lead sets showed that >90% of molecules melt within [50,250]°C. The final model calculated an RMSE of less than 33 °C for molecules from this temperature interval, which is the most important for medicinal chemistry users. This performance was achieved using a consensus model that performed calculations to a significantly higher accuracy than the individual models. We found that compounds with reactive and unstable groups were overrepresented among outlying compounds. These compounds could decompose during storage or measurement, thus introducing experimental errors. While filtering the data by removing outliers generally increased the accuracy of individual models, it did not significantly affect the results of the consensus models. Three analyzed distance to models did not allow us to flag molecules, which had MP values fell outside the applicability domain of the model. We believe that this negative result and the public availability of data from this article will encourage future studies to develop better approaches to define the applicability domain of models. Prediction and Interpretability of Melting Points of Ionic Liquids Using Graph Neural Networks.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) have wide and promising applications in fields such as chemical engineering, energy, and the environment. However, the melting points (MPs) of ILs are one of the most crucial properties affecting their applications. The MPs of ILs are affected by various factors, and tuning these in a laboratory is time-consuming and costly. Therefore, an accurate and efficient method is required to predict the desired MPs in the design of novel targeted ILs. In this study, three descriptor-based machine learning (DBML) models and eight graph neural network (GNN) models were proposed to predict the MPs of ILs. Fingerprints and molecular graphs were used to represent molecules for the DBML and GNNs, respectively. The GNN models demonstrated performance superior to that of the DBML models. Among all of the examined models, the graph convolutional model exhibited the best performance with high accuracy (root-mean-squared error = 37.06, mean absolute error = 28.79, and correlation coefficient = 0.76). Benefiting from molecular graph representation, we built a GNN-based interpretable model to reveal the atomistic contribution to the MPs of ILs using a data-driven procedure. According to our interpretable model, amino groups, S+, N+, and P+ would increase the MPs of ILs, while the negatively charged halogen atoms, S-, and N- would decrease the MPs of ILs. The results of this study provide new insight into the rapid screening and synthesis of targeted ILs with appropriate MPs.

Fluidic Self-Assembly on Electroplated Multilayer Solder Bumps with Tailored Transformation Imprinted Melting Points.

Project description:This communication presents fluidic self-assembly of Si-chip on a sequentially electroplated multilayer solder bump with tailored transformation imprinted melting points. The multilayer solder bump is a lead free ternary solder system, which provides a route to transform the melting point of interconnects for applications in solder directed fluidic self-assembly. The outermost metal layers form a low melting point Bi33.7In66.3 solder shell (72 °C). This solder shell enables fluidic self-assembly and self-alignment of freely in water suspended Si-dies at relatively low temperature (75 °C) leading to well-ordered chip arrays. The reduction of the free surface energy of the shell-water interface provides the driving force for the self-assembly. The lowermost metal layer is a high melting point solder and acts as a core. After the self-assembly is complete, a short reflow causes the transformation of the core and the shell yielding a stable high melting point solder with adjustable melting points. The chosen ternary solder system enables the realization of interconnects with melting points in the range of 112 °C to 206 °C.
