Reactions of B₂ (o-tolyl)₄ with Boranes: Assembly of the Pentaborane(9), HB[B(o-tolyl)(μ-H)]₄.

ABSTRACT: Reactions of the diborane(4) B₂ (o-tolyl)₄ and monohydridoboranes are shown to give B(o-tolyl)₃ and (o-tolyl)BR₂ (R₂ =(C₈ H₁₄ ) 3, cat 4, pin 5, (C₆ F₅ )₂ 6) as the major products. The corresponding reaction with BH₃ -sources gives complex mixtures, resulting from hydride/aryl exchange, dimerization and borane elimination. This led to the isolation of the first tetra-substituted pentaborane(9) HB[B(o-tolyl)(μ-H)]₄ 8. The reaction pathways are probed experimentally and by computations.

Crystal structure of a low-spin poly[di-μ3-cyanido-di-μ2-cyanido-bis-(μ2-2-ethyl-pyrazine)-dicopper(I)iron(II)].

Project description:In the title metal-organic framework, [Fe(C6H8N2)2{Cu(CN)2}2] n , the low-spin FeII ion lies at an inversion centre and displays an elongated octa-hedral [FeN6] coordination environment. The axial positions are occupied by two symmetry-related bridging 2-ethyl-pyrazine ligands, while the equatorial positions are occupied by four N atoms of two pairs of symmetry-related cyanide groups. The CuI centre is coordinated by three cyanide carbon atoms and one N atom of a bridging 2-ethyl-pyrazine mol-ecule, which form a tetra-hedral coordination environment. Two neighbouring Cu atoms have a short Cu⋯Cu contact [2.4662 (7) Å] and their coordination tetra-hedra are connected through a common edge between two C atoms of cyanide groups. Each Cu2(CN)2 unit, formed by two neighbouring Cu atoms bridged by two carbons from a pair of μ-CN groups, is connected to six FeII centres via two bridging 2-ethyl-pyrazine mol-ecules and four cyanide groups, resulting in the formation of a polymeric three-dimensional metal-organic coordination framework.

Multicompartment Micelles by Aqueous Self-Assembly of μ-A(BC) n Miktobrush Terpolymers.

Project description:The aqueous self-assembly of μ-A(BC) n miktobrush terpolymers has been studied using dynamic light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. In this system, the A block is hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide), "O", the B block is hydrophobic poly(methylcaprolactone), "C", and the C block is hydrophobic and oleophobic poly(perfluoropropylene oxide), "F". Two terpolymers were examined: one with an average of about two C blocks and two F blocks and another with an average of about three C blocks and two F blocks. In both cases, the total molar mass is near 40 kg mol-1, and the volume fraction of the single O block is greater than 50% of the whole. Both samples form multicompartment micelle structures with subdivided solvophobic cores of C and F domains. The morphologies observed are generally analogous to those previously observed for the self-assembly of μ-ABC miktoarm star terpolymers, namely, "raspberry" and "hamburger" micelles; however, an intriguing multicompartment polymersome morphology with compartmentalized solvophobic bilayers is also observed. These results are interpreted in terms of the relative strengths of the competing interactions among the three blocks and the solvent and in terms of the constraints imposed by the miktobrush architecture.

Isolable Diaminophosphide Boranes.

Project description:Metalation of secondary diaminophosphine boranes by alkali metal amides provides a robust and selective access route to a range of metal diaminophosphide boranes M[(R2 N)2 P(BH3 )] (M=Li, Na, K; R=alkyl, aryl) with acyclic or heterocyclic molecular backbones, whereas reduction of a chlorodiaminophosphine borane gave less satisfactory results. The metalated species were characterized in situ by NMR spectroscopy and in two cases isolated as crystalline solids. Single-crystal XRD studies revealed the presence of salt-like structures with strongly interacting ions. Synthetic applications of K[(R2 N)2 P(BH3 )] were studied in reactions with a 1,2-dichlorodisilane and CS2 , which afforded either mono- or difunctional phosphine boranes with a rare combination of electronegative amino and electropositive functional disilanyl groups on phosphorus, or a phosphinodithioformate. Spectroscopic studies gave a first hint that removal of the borane fragment may be feasible.

Multinuclear iron-phenyl species in reactions of simple iron salts with PhMgBr: identification of Fe4(μ-Ph)6(THF)4 as a key reactive species for cross-coupling catalysis.

Project description:The first direct syntheses, structural characterizations, and reactivity studies of iron-phenyl species formed upon reaction of Fe(acac)3 and PhMgBr in THF are presented. Reaction of Fe(acac)3 with 4 equiv. PhMgBr in THF leads to the formation of [FePh2(μ-Ph)]2 2- at -80 °C, which can be stabilized through the addition of N-methylpyrrolidone. Alternatively, at -30 °C this reaction leads to the formation of the tetranuclear iron-phenyl cluster, Fe4(μ-Ph)6(THF)4. Further synthetic studies demonstrate that analogous tetranuclear iron clusters can be formed with both 4-F-PhMgBr and p-tolylMgBr, illustrating the generality of this structural motif for reactions of simple ferric salts and aryl Grignard reagents in THF. Additional studies isolate and define key iron species involved in the synthetic pathway leading to the formation of the tetranuclear iron-aryl species. While reaction studies demonstrate that [FePh2(μ-Ph)]2 2- is unreactive towards electrophile, Fe4(μ-Ph)6(THF)4 is found to rapidly react with bromocyclohexane to selectively form phenylcyclohexane. Based on this reactivity, a new catalytic reaction protocol has been developed that enables efficient cross-couplings using Fe4(μ-Ph)6(THF)4, circumventing the current need for additives such as TMEDA or supporting ligands to achieve effective cross-coupling of PhMgBr and a secondary alkyl halide.

Insights into the structures and electronic properties of Cun+1μ and CunS μ (n = 1-12; μ = 0, ±1) clusters.

Project description:AbstarctThe stability and reactivity of clusters are closely related to their valence electronic configuration. Doping is a most efficient method to modify the electronic configuration and properties of a cluster. Considering that Cu and S posses one and six valence electrons, respectively, the S doped Cu clusters with even number of valence electrons are expected to be more stable than those with odd number of electrons. By using the swarm intelligence based CALYPSO method on crystal structural prediction, we have explored the structures of neutral and charged Cun+1 and CunS (n = 1-12) clusters. The electronic properties of the lowest energy structures have been investigated systemically by first-principles calculations with density functional theory. The results showed that the clusters with a valence count of 2, 8 and 12 appear to be magic numbers with enhanced stability. In addition, several geometry-related-properties have been discussed and compared with those results available in the literature.

Project description:The title compounds, [Fe4(C2H3O2)6(C7H4O3)FO(C5H5N)3]·C5H5N·0.24H2O (1-F) and [Fe4(C2H3O2)6(C7H4O3)ClO(C5H5N)3]·H2O (1-Cl) were synthesized using a self-assembly reaction in methanol and pyridine with stoichiometric addition of salicyl-hydroxamic acid (H3shi), acetic acid (HOAc), and the appropriate ferric halide salt. The compounds crystallize as solvates, where 1-F has one pyridine mol-ecule that is disordered about a twofold axis and one water mol-ecule with an occupancy of 0.24 (2); and 1-Cl has one water mol-ecule that is disordered over two sites with occupancies of 0.71 (1) and 0.29 (1). The space groups for each analog differ as 1-F crystallizes in Fdd2 while 1-Cl crystallizes in P21. The difference in packing is due to changes in the inter-molecular inter-actions involving the different halides. The two mol-ecules are mostly isostructural, differing only by the torsion of the pyrine ligands and slight orientation changes in the acetate ligands. All of the iron(III) ions are in six-coordinate octa-hedral ligand field geometries but each one exhibits a unique coordination environment with various numbers of O (four to six) and N (nought to two) atom donors. Bond-valence sums confirm each iron is trivalent. The hydroximate ligand is bound to three iron(III) ions using a fused chelate motif similar to those in metallacrown compounds.

Dynamic lateral organization of opioid receptors (kappa, muwt and muN40D ) in the plasma membrane at the nanoscale level.

Project description:Opioid receptors are important pharmacological targets for the management of numerous medical conditions (eg, severe pain), but they are also the gateway to the development of deleterious side effects (eg, opiate addiction). Opioid receptor signaling cascades are well characterized. However, quantitative information regarding their lateral dynamics and nanoscale organization in the plasma membrane remains limited. Since these dynamic properties are important determinants of receptor function, it is crucial to define them. Herein, the nanoscale lateral dynamics and spatial organization of kappa opioid receptor (KOP), wild type mu opioid receptor (MOPwt ), and its naturally occurring isoform (MOPN40D ) were quantitatively characterized using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and photoactivated localization microscopy. Obtained results, supported by ensemble-averaged Monte Carlo simulations, indicate that these opioid receptors dynamically partition into different domains. In particular, significant exclusion from GM1 ganglioside-enriched domains and partial association with cholesterol-enriched domains was observed. Nanodomain size, receptor population density and the fraction of receptors residing outside of nanodomains were receptor-specific. KOP-containing domains were the largest and most densely populated, with the smallest fraction of molecules residing outside of nanodomains. The opposite was true for MOPN40D . Moreover, cholesterol depletion dynamically regulated the partitioning of KOP and MOPwt , whereas this effect was not observed for MOPN40D .

Two polymorphs of [Rh(μ-I)(COD)]2.

Project description:The solid-state structure of di-μ-iodido-bis-{[(1,2,5,6-η)-cyclo-octa-1,4-diene]rhodium(I)}, [Rh2I2(C8H12)2] or [Rh(μ-I)(COD)]2, was determined from two crystals with different morphologies, which were found to correspond to two polymorphs containing Rh dimers with significantly different mol-ecular structures. Both polymorphs are monoclinic and the [Rh(μ-I)(COD)]2 mol-ecules in each case possess C2 v symmetry. However, the core geometry of the butterfly-shaped Rh2I2 core differs substanti-ally. In the C2/c polymorph, the core geometry of [Rh(μ-I)(COD)]2 B is bent, with a hinge angle of 96.13 (8)° and a Rh⋯Rh distance of 2.9612 (11) Å. The P21/c polymorph features a more planar [Rh(μ-I)(COD)]2 P core geometry, with a hinge angle of 145.69 (9)° and a Rh⋯Rh distance of 3.7646 (5) Å.

[Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2: Versatile and Highly Reactive Complexes for Cross-Coupling Reactions that Avoid Formation of Inactive Pd(I) Off-Cycle Products.

Project description:The development of more reactive, general, easily accessible, and readily available Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts remains a key challenge in homogeneous catalysis. In this study, we establish air-stable NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimers, [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2, as the most reactive Pd(II)-NHC catalysts developed to date. Most crucially, compared with [Pd(NHC)(allyl)Cl] complexes, replacement of the allyl throw-away ligand with chloride allows for a more facile activation step, while effectively preventing the formation of off-cycle [Pd2(μ-allyl)(μ-Cl)(NHC)2] products. The utility is demonstrated via broad compatibility with amide cross-coupling, Suzuki cross-coupling, and the direct, late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals. Computational studies provide key insight into the NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimer activation pathway. A facile synthesis of NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimers in one-pot from NHC salts is reported. Considering the tremendous utility of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions and the overwhelming success of [Pd(NHC)(allyl)Cl] precatalysts, we believe that NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimers, [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2, should be considered as go-to precatalysts of choice in cross-coupling processes.

Reactivity of a coordinated inorganic acetylene unit, HBNH, and the azidoborane cation [HB(N3)].

Project description:A donor-acceptor complex of HBNH was prepared via thermolysis of a carbene-stabilized azidoborane. The reactivity of the fundamentally important HBNH unit (inorganic alkyne analogue) was explored in detail, including attempts to convert this species and related hydrido(azido)borane cations into molecular complexes of BN. This work provides added impetus for the development of molecular precursors that can release bulk boron nitride (a desirable insulator and thermal conductor) under mild conditions, and from solution.
