Carbon Origami via an Alumina-Assisted Cyclodehydrofluorination Strategy.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of pristine non-planar nanographenes (NGs) via a cyclodehydrofluorination strategy is reported and the creation of highly strained systems via alumina-assisted C-F bond activation is shown. Steric hindrance could execute an alternative coupling program leading to rare octagon formation offering access to elusive non-classical NGs. The combination of two alternative ways of folding could lead to the formation of various 3D NG objects, resembling the Japanese art of origami. The power of the presented "origami" approach is proved by the assembly of 12 challenging nanographenes that are π-isoelectronic to planar hexabenzocoronene but forced out of planarity.

AS1411 aptamer modified carbon dots via polyethylenimine-assisted strategy for efficient targeted cancer cell imaging.

Project description:ObjectivesCarbon dots (CDs), as a fascinating class of fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, have been proven to be powerful tools in the field of bioimaging and biosensing due to their small size, suitable photostability and favourable biocompatibility. However, the cellular uptake of free CDs lacks selectivity and the same negative charges as cell membranes may cause inefficient cell internalization. In this study, an efficient detecting and targeting nanosystem was developed based on the DNA aptamer AS1411 modified CDs with polyethyleneimine (PEI) as connecting bridge.Materials and methodsHydrothermally prepared CDs were assembled with positive-charged PEI, followed by conjugation with AS1411 through electrostatic interaction to form CDs-PEI-AS1411 nanocomplexes. The CDs, CDs-PEI and CDs-PEI-AS1411 were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, UV-vis spectra, zeta potential measurements and capillary electrophoresis characterizations. The cytotoxicity investigation of the CDs-PEI-AS1411 and CDs-PEI in both MCF-7 and L929 cells was carried out by the CCK-8 assay. The cellular uptake of the CDs-PEI-AS1411 was studied with confocal microscopy and flow cytometry.ResultsThe as-prepared nanosystem possessed good photostability and no obvious cytotoxicity. On the basis of the confocal laser scanning microscope observation and the flow cytometry studies, the cellular uptake of CDs-PEI-AS1411 nanosystem in MCF-7 cells was significantly higher than that of L929 cells, which revealed the highly selective detection ability of nucleolin-positive cells.ConclusionsThe results of this study indicated that the CDs-PEI-AS1411 nanosystem had a potential value in cancer cell targeted imaging.

Efficient Thermal Transport Highway Construction Within Epoxy Matrix via Hybrid Carbon Fibers and Alumina Particles.

Project description:Polymer composites with excellent thermal conductivity and superior mechanical strength are in high demand in the electrical engineering systems. However, achieving superior thermal conductivity and mechanical properties simultaneously at high loading of fillers will still be a challenging issue. In this work, a facile method was proposed to prepare the epoxy composite with carbon fibers (CFs) and alumina (Al2O3). This CF and Al2O3 hybrid structure can effectively reduce the interfacial thermal resistance between the matrix and the CFs. The thermal conductivity of epoxy composite with 6.4 wt % CFs and 74 wt % Al2O3 hybrid filler reaches 3.84 W/(m K), which is increasing by 2096% compared with that of pure epoxy. Meanwhile, the epoxy composite still retains outstanding thermal stability and mechanical performance at high filler loading. A cost-effective avenue to prepare highly thermally conductive and superior mechanical properties of polymer-based composites may enable some prospective application in advanced thermal management.

Upgrading Electricity Generation and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Efficiency via Phase-Change Feedback and Simple Origami Strategy.

Project description:Developing ultimate electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that can simultaneously upgrade the quality of generated electricity and the light-thermal-electric conversion efficiency based on traditional thermoelectric devices is crucially desired. Herein, a series of flexible multilayered phase change films (PCFs) is developed by a simple and novel origami strategy. The PCFs are first reported to improve the light-thermal-electric conversion efficiency by as high as 11.3%. Simultaneously, the PCFs could significantly upgrade the generated electricity on average voltage (27.3%), average current (23.8%), and lasting power outputs by 2010 times from microwatts to milliwatts. Besides, the EMI shielding efficiency of PCFs could be tuned from 39.2 to 71.9 dB by the origami process, the wide-range EMI shielding performance could be suitable for varying occasions. Overall, this work provides a promising solution for both the preparation of multifunctional materials, high-efficiency solar energy harvesting and upgrading electricity generation, which shows broad application prospects in EMI shielding, energy storage, and conversion.

Membrane-assisted growth of DNA origami nanostructure arrays.

Project description:Biological membranes fulfill many important tasks within living organisms. In addition to separating cellular volumes, membranes confine the space available to membrane-associated proteins to two dimensions (2D), which greatly increases their probability to interact with each other and assemble into multiprotein complexes. We here employed two DNA origami structures functionalized with cholesterol moieties as membrane anchors--a three-layered rectangular block and a Y-shaped DNA structure--to mimic membrane-assisted assembly into hierarchical superstructures on supported lipid bilayers and small unilamellar vesicles. As designed, the DNA constructs adhered to the lipid bilayers mediated by the cholesterol anchors and diffused freely in 2D with diffusion coefficients depending on their size and number of cholesterol modifications. Different sets of multimerization oligonucleotides added to bilayer-bound origami block structures induced the growth of either linear polymers or two-dimensional lattices on the membrane. Y-shaped DNA origami structures associated into triskelion homotrimers and further assembled into weakly ordered arrays of hexagons and pentagons, which resembled the geometry of clathrin-coated pits. Our results demonstrate the potential to realize artificial self-assembling systems that mimic the hierarchical formation of polyhedral lattices on cytoplasmic membranes.

Fabrication of Carbon-Alumina Composites via Catalytic Pyrolysis of Pine Sawdust on Aluminum Dross for Cr(VI) Removal.

Project description:Carbon-alumina composites are prepared for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Pristine and acid-treated alumina dross (AD and AAD) are copyrolyzed with pine sawdust to form the respective composites, ADPC and AADPC. Excellent absorption properties with Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 95.08% are demonstrated at 60 °C for an initial concentration of 6 μg/mL. The composites combine the merits of char, which provides a high surface-to-volume ratio with abundant functional groups on the surface, and alumina, which provides metal ions for coprecipitation. Carbon structures of pine, char, and composite were analyzed semiquantitatively using 13C NMR by a curve-fitting method. Cr(VI) adsorption is accurately described with chemisorption by the Langmuir isotherm model and a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results show that AADPC has more alcohol hydroxyl groups substituted to glucosyl units in amorphous cellulose assigned to the peak at 80 ppm and hemicellulose assigned to peaks at 97 and 101 ppm. Also, it has more phenolic groups in lignin distributed at syringyl units assigned to peaks at 129 and 146 ppm. These oxygen-containing functional groups have a significant influence on Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction to Cr(III) governed by the mechanisms of diffusion, adsorption, complexation, reduction, and coprecipitation. The results of this work provide a new direction for the reuse of biomass and industrial solid wastes to fabricate higher value-added products, i.e., adsorption materials for Cr(VI) removal and stabilization.

Alumina nanoparticle-assisted enzyme refolding: A versatile methodology for proteins renaturation.

Project description:We present a high-yield method for the renaturation of negatively charged enzymes. The approach is based on the use of alumina nanoparticles, which after electrostatic interaction with denatured protein molecules, prevent their aggregation and make the process of refolding controllable. The method, demonstrated by the renaturation of several enzymes, is efficient, rapid, employs a minimal amount of reagents and even can be applied to renature mixture of the denatured enzymes.

Mixed Matrix Carbon Molecular Sieve and Alumina (CMS-Al2O3) Membranes.

Project description:This work shows mixed matrix inorganic membranes prepared by the vacuum-assisted impregnation method, where phenolic resin precursors filled the pore of α-alumina substrates. Upon carbonisation, the phenolic resin decomposed into several fragments derived from the backbone of the resin matrix. The final stages of decomposition (>650 °C) led to a formation of carbon molecular sieve (CMS) structures, reaching the lowest average pore sizes of ~5 Å at carbonisation temperatures of 700 °C. The combination of vacuum-assisted impregnation and carbonisation led to the formation of mixed matrix of CMS and α-alumina particles (CMS-Al2O3) in a single membrane. These membranes were tested for pervaporative desalination and gave very high water fluxes of up to 25 kg m(-2) h(-1) for seawater (NaCl 3.5 wt%) at 75 °C. Salt rejection was also very high varying between 93-99% depending on temperature and feed salt concentration. Interestingly, the water fluxes remained almost constant and were not affected as feed salt concentration increased from 0.3, 1 and 3.5 wt%.

Lipid-bilayer-assisted two-dimensional self-assembly of DNA origami nanostructures.

Project description:Self-assembly is a ubiquitous approach to the design and fabrication of novel supermolecular architectures. Here we report a strategy termed 'lipid-bilayer-assisted self-assembly' that is used to assemble DNA origami nanostructures into two-dimensional lattices. DNA origami structures are electrostatically adsorbed onto a mica-supported zwitterionic lipid bilayer in the presence of divalent cations. We demonstrate that the bilayer-adsorbed origami units are mobile on the surface and self-assembled into large micrometre-sized lattices in their lateral dimensions. Using high-speed atomic force microscopy imaging, a variety of dynamic processes involved in the formation of the lattice, such as fusion, reorganization and defect filling, are successfully visualized. The surface modifiability of the assembled lattice is also demonstrated by in situ decoration with streptavidin molecules. Our approach provides a new strategy for preparing versatile scaffolds for nanofabrication and paves the way for organizing functional nanodevices in a micrometer space.

Tailoring thermal conductivity via three-dimensional porous alumina.

Project description:Three-dimensional anodic alumina templates (3D-AAO) are an astonishing framework with open highly ordered three-dimensional skeleton structures. Since these templates are architecturally different from conventional solids or porous templates, they teem with opportunities for engineering thermal properties. By establishing the mechanisms of heat transfer in these frameworks, we aim to create materials with tailored thermal properties. The effective thermal conductivity of an empty 3D-AAO membrane was measured. As the effective medium theory was not valid to extract the skeletal thermal conductivity of 3D-AAO, a simple 3D thermal conduction model was developed, based on a mixed series and parallel thermal resistor circuit, giving a skeletal thermal conductivity value of approximately 1.25 W·m-1·K-1, which matches the value of the ordinary AAO membranes prepared from the same acid solution. The effect of different filler materials as well as the variation of the number of transversal nanochannels and the length of the 3D-AAO membrane in the effective thermal conductivity of the composite was studied. Finally, the thermal conductivity of two 3D-AAO membranes filled with cobalt and bismuth telluride was also measured, which was in good agreement with the thermal model predictions. Therefore, this work proved this structure as a powerful approach to tailor thermal properties.
