Rearrangement Strategy for the Preparation of Polymers With π-Conjugated Structures.

ABSTRACT: π-Conjugated polymers are usually prepared by polymerization only. In this perspective article, typical synthesis methods of conjugated polymers are briefly summarized, and a novel strategy for preparing conjugated polymers by rearrangement is proposed. During the metalation process, many conjugated structures were generated in polybutadiene by double bond migration. The effects of reaction time, temperature, and catalyst dosage on the product structure were investigated. Moreover, the structure of the products was confirmed by FTIR, ¹H NMR, and 2D HSQC NMR spectra. Thus, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed, in which polybutadiene generates allylic carbanions in the presence of n-butyllithium, and then the double bonds migrate through the carbanions rearrangement to generate many conjugated structures in the backbone chain. The method shows promise in facile and low-cost synthesis of conjugated polymers without the need for precious metal catalysts.

Preparation and Chemical Properties of π-Conjugated Polymers Containing Indigo Unit in the Main Chain.

Project description:π-Conjugated polymers based on indigo unit were prepared. Dehalogenative polycondensation of N-hexyl-6,6'-dibromoindigo with a zerovalent nickel complex gave a homopolymer, P(HexI), in 77% yield. Copolymer of N-hexyl-indigo and pyridine, P(HexI-Py), was also prepared in 50% yield. P(HexI) showed good solubility in organic solvents, whereas P(HexI-Py) was only soluble in acids such as HCOOH. The weight-average molecular weights (Mw) of P(HexI) and P(HexI-Py) were determined to be 10,000 and 40,000, respectively, by a light scattering method. Pd-catalyzed polycondensation between 6,6'-dibromoindigo with N-BOC (BOC = t-butoxycarbonyl) substituents and a diboronic compound of 9,9-dioctylfluorene afforded the corresponding alternating copolymer, P(BOCI-Flu), as a deep red solid in 98% yield. P(BOCI-Flu) was soluble in N-methyl-2-pyrroridone and showed an Mw of 29,000 in GPC analysis. Treatment of P(BOCI-Flu) with CF₃COOH smoothly led to a BOC-deprotection reaction to give an insoluble deep green polymer, P(I-Flu), in a quantitative yield. Diffuse reflectance spectra of powdery P(BOCI-Flu) and P(I-Flu) showed peaks at about 580 nm and 630 nm, respectively, which are thought to originate from the indigo unit.

β-Strand inspired bifacial π-conjugated polymers.

Project description:Access to diverse, relatively high molecular weight soluble linear polymers without pendant solubilizing chains is the key to solution state synthesis of structurally diverse nanoribbons of conjugated materials. However, realizing soluble 1D-π-conjugated polymers without pendant solubilizing chains is a daunting task. Herein, inspired from the polypeptide β-strand architecture, we have designed and developed novel bifacial π-conjugated polymers (M n: ca. 24 kDa) that are soluble (ca. 70 to >250 mM) despite the absence of pendant solubilizing chains. The impact of varying the bifacial monomer height on polymer solubility, optical properties, and interactions with small molecules is reported.

Oxidation promoted self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers.

Project description:Self-assembly is an attractive strategy for organizing molecules into ordered structures that can span multiple length scales. Crystallization Driven Self-Assembly (CDSA) involves a block copolymer with a crystallizable core-forming block and an amorphous corona-forming block that aggregate into micelles with a crystalline core in solvents that are selective for the corona block. CDSA requires core- and corona-forming blocks with very different solubilities. This hinders its use for the self-assembly of purely π-conjugated block copolymers since blocks with desirable optoelectronic properties tend to have similar solubilities. Further, this approach is not readily reversible, precluding stimulus-responsive assembly and disassembly. Here, we demonstrate that selective oxidative doping of one block of a fully π-conjugated block copolymer promotes the self-assembly of redox-responsive micelles. Heteroatom substitution in polychalcogenophenes enables the modulation of the intrinsic polymer oxidation potential. We show that oxidized micelles with a narrow size distribution form spontaneously and disassemble in response to a chemical reductant. This method expands the scope of π-conjugated polymers that can undergo controlled self-assembly and introduces reversible, redox-responsive self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers.

Surface-Assisted Synthesis of N-Containing π-Conjugated Polymers.

Project description:On-surface synthesis has recently emerged as a powerful strategy to design conjugated polymers previously precluded in conventional solution chemistry. Here, an N-containing pentacene-based precursor (tetraazapentacene) is ex-professo synthesized endowed with terminal dibromomethylene (:CBr2 ) groups to steer homocoupling via dehalogenation on metallic supports. Combined scanning probe microscopy investigations complemented by theoretical calculations reveal how the substrate selection drives different reaction mechanisms. On Ag(111) the dissociation of bromine atoms at room temperature triggers the homocoupling of tetraazapentacene units together with the binding of silver adatoms to the nitrogen atoms of the monomers giving rise to a N-containing conjugated coordination polymer (P1). Subsequently, P1 undergoes ladderization at 200 °C, affording a pyrrolopyrrole-bridged conjugated polymer (P2). On Au(111) the formation of the intermediate polymer P1 is not observed and, instead, after annealing at 100 °C, the conjugated ladder polymer P2 is obtained, revealing the crucial role of metal adatoms on Ag(111) as compared to Au(111). Finally, on Ag(100) the loss of :CBr2 groups affords the formation of tetraazapentacene monomers, which coexist with polymer P1. Our results contribute to introduce protocols for the synthesis of N-containing conjugated polymers, illustrating the selective role of the metallic support in the underlying reaction mechanisms.

Divanillin-Based Polyazomethines: Toward Biobased and Metal-Free π-Conjugated Polymers.

Project description:Divanillin was synthesized in high yield and purity using Laccase from Trametes versicolor. It was then polymerized with benzene-1,4-diamine and 2,7-diaminocarbazole to form polyazomethines. Polymerizations were performed under microwave irradiation and without transition-metal-based catalysts. These biobased conjugated polyazomethines present a broad fluorescence spectrum ranging from 400 to 600 nm. Depending on the co-monomer used, polyazomethines with molar masses of around 10 kg·mol-1 and with electronic gaps ranging from 2.66 to 2.85 eV were obtained. Furthermore, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were performed to corroborate the experimental results.

Conformational control over π-conjugated electron pairing in 1D organic polymers.

Project description:During the past decades π-conjugated bi-radicals have attracted increasing attention, due to the existence of two close-in-energy resonant electronic configurations with very distinct characteristics: the open-shell bi-radical and the closed-shell quinoidal. The chemical design of the bi-radical structure has been shown to be very effective to shift the balance towards one, or the other, electronic distribution. Some reports have experimentally studied the analogous 1D oligomers and polymers, however, only the open-shell multi-radical configuration has been detected, and it is yet not very clear which structural and chemical parameters are relevant in such extended systems. In this work, via first principles quantum chemical simulations, we study a series of π-conjugated 1D polymers based on triarylmethyl radicals with different chemical functionalization. We find that dihedral angles of the aryl rings connecting the radical centres are the key conformational parameter determining the electronic balance. This provides a simple recipe to use chemical functionalization of aryl rings as a tool to shift the system towards either the electron paired or unpaired configurations. Additionally, we find such conformational control is also effective under the effect of thermal fluctuations, which highlights its potential technological applicability.

π-Conjugated redox-active two-dimensional polymers as organic cathode materials.

Project description:Redox-active two-dimensional polymers (RA-2DPs) are promising lithium battery organic cathode materials due to their regular porosities and high chemical stabilities. However, weak electrical conductivities inherent to the non-conjugated molecular motifs used thus far limit device performance and the practical relevance of these materials. We herein address this problem by developing a modular approach to construct π-conjugated RA-2DPs with a new polycyclic aromatic redox-active building block PDI-DA. Efficient imine-condensation between PDI-DA and two polyfunctional amine nodes followed by quantitative alkyl chain removal produced RA-2DPs TAPPy-PDI and TAPB-PDI as conjugated, porous, polycrystalline networks. In-plane conjugation and permanent porosity endow these materials with high electrical conductivity and high ion diffusion rates. As such, both RA-2DPs function as organic cathode materials with good rate performance and excellent cycling stability. Importantly, the improved design enables higher areal mass-loadings than were previously available, which drives a practical demonstration of TAPPy-PDI as the power source for a series of LED lights. Collectively, this investigation discloses viable synthetic methodologies and design principles for the realization of high-performance organic cathode materials.

Low Bandgap Donor-Acceptor π-Conjugated Polymers From Diarylcyclopentadienone-Fused Naphthalimides.

Project description:Two novel aromatic imides, diarylcyclopentadienone-fused naphthalimides (BCPONI-2Br and TCPONI-2Br), are designed and synthesized by condensation coupling cyclopentadienone derivatives at the lateral position of naphthalimide skeleton. It has been found that BCPONI-2Br and TCPONI-2Br are highly electron-withdrawing acceptor moieties, which possess broad absorption bands and very low-lying LUMO energy levels, as low as -4.02 eV. On the basis of both building blocks, six low bandgap D-A copolymers (P1-P6) are prepared via Suzuki or Stille coupling reactions. The optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers are fine-tuned by the variations of donors (carbazole, benzodithiophene, and dithienopyrrole) and π-conjugation linkers (thiophene and benzene). All polymers exhibit several attractive photophysical and electrochemical properties, i.e., broad near-infrared (NIR) absorption, deep-lying LUMO levels (between -3.88 and -3.76 eV), and a very small optical bandgap ( E g opt ) as low as 0.81 eV, which represents the first aromatic diimide-based polymer with an E g opt of <1.0 eV. An investigation of charge carrier transport properties shows that P5 exhibits a moderately high hole mobility of 0.02 cm2 V-1 s-1 in bottom-gate field-effect transistors (FETs) and a typical ambipolar transport behavior in top-gate FETs. The findings suggest that BCPONI-2Br, TCPONI-2Br, and the other similar acceptor units are promising building blocks for novel organic semiconductors with outstanding NIR activity, high electron affinity, and low bandgap, which can be extended to various next-generation optoelectronic devices.

On-surface synthesis of π-conjugated ladder-type polymers comprising nonbenzenoid moieties.

Project description:On-surface synthesis provides a powerful approach toward the atomically precise fabrication of π-conjugated ladder polymers (CLPs). We report herein the surface-assisted synthesis of nonbenzenoid CLPs from cyclopenta-annulated anthracene monomers on Au(111) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Successive thermal annealing steps reveal the dehalogenative homocoupling to yield an intermediate 1D polymer and the subsequent cyclodehydrogenation to form the fully conjugated ladder polymer. Notably, neighbouring monomers may fuse in two different ways, resulting in six- and five-membered rings, respectively. The structure and electronic properties of the reaction products have been investigated via low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, complemented by density-functional theory calculations. Our results provide perspectives for the on-surface synthesis of nonbenzenoid CLPs with the potential to be used for organic electronic devices.

Topological Transition in Aromatic and Quinonoid π-Conjugated Polymers Induced by Static Strain.

Project description:A topological quantum phase transition has been identified for the first time for 24 π-conjugated polymers as a function of external longitudinal strain due to a level crossing of the frontier orbitals at the topological phase transition. Topological phase is determined by the presence/absence of edge states. Out of the 24 polymers 15 are traditionally assigned an aromatic character, and 9 are traditionally assigned a quinonoid character. We find that all aromatic ones correspond to the trivial topological phase (Zak invariant, Z2 = 0), while all of the quinonoid ones to the nontrivial topological phase (Z2 = 1) replacing the intuitive characterization of aromatic/quinonoid with the physically well-defined Zak invariant. Unique topological phase transition as a function of tensile strain can be achieved for four of the quinonoid ones. Tensile strain in these cases leads to a reduction of the bandgap. We introduced a figure of merit for indicating the efficiency of achievable very small bandgap upon the application of external strain.
