Geosesarma sodalis, a new species of vampire crab (Crustacea, Brachyura, Sesarmidae) from a limestone cave in central Sarawak, Malaysia.

ABSTRACT: A new species of semi-terrestrial crab of the genus Geosesarma (Sesarmidae) is described from a limestone cave in central Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Geosesarma sodalis sp. nov. is characterised by its quadrate carapace, absence of a flagellum on the exopod of the third maxilliped, presence of 10 or 11 sharp tubercles on the dactylus of the chela and a diagnostic male first gonopod structure. This is the sixth species of Geosesarma reported from Sarawak, and the first member of the genus collected from inside caves.

Characterization of the Complete Mitochondrial Genome of the Bromeliad Crab Metopaulias depressus (Rathbun, 1896) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Sesarmidae).

Project description:Metopaulias depressus is a non-marine crab endemic to Jamaica that dwells in rainforest bromeliads and exhibits elaborate active parental care behavior. Current genomic resources on M. depressus are rare, limiting the understanding of its adaptation to terrestrial life in species that evolved from marine ancestors. This study reports the complete mitochondrial genome of M. depressus assembled using Sanger sequencing. The AT-rich mitochondrial genome of M. depressus is 15,765 bp in length and comprises 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. A single 691 bp-long intergenic space is assumed to be the control region (CR) or D-loop. A set of selective pressure analyses indicate that the entirety of the PCGs experience purifying selection. Cox1, cox2, nad5, cox3, and atp6 experience strong purifying selection, and atp8 experiences weak purifying selection compared to the rest of the PCGs. The secondary structures of most tRNA genes exhibit a standard 'cloverleaf' structure, with the exception of trnS1, which lacks the dihydroxyuridine (DHU) arm but not the loop, the trnH gene, which lacks the thymine pseudouracil cytosine (T) loop but not the arm, and trnM, which exhibits an overly developed T loop. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on all PCGs indicated that M. depressus is more closely related to the genera Clistocoeloma, Nanosesarma, and Parasesarma than to Chiromantes, Geosesarma, and Orisarma. This study contributes to deciphering the phylogenetic relationships within the family Sesarmidae and represents a new genomic resource for this iconic crab species.

A new species of micro-mangrove crab of the genus Haberma Ng & Schubart, 2002 (Crustacea, Brachyura, Sesarmidae) from Hong Kong.

Project description:The sesarmid genus Haberma Ng & Schubart, 2002, currently contains two species of small mangrove crabs with the first two pairs of the male ambulatory legs possessing characteristic subchelate dactyli and propodi. A new species, H. tingkok, is here described from Hong Kong. It can be separated from H. nanum Ng & Schubart, 2002 (from Singapore), and H. kamora Rahayu & Ng, 2005 (from Indonesian Papua) by its carapace shape, proportions of the ambulatory legs, and structures of the male pleon and male first gonopod.

What is Sesarmops impressus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) (Crustacea: Brachyura: Sesarmidae)?

Project description:The identity of the widely distributed mangrove and riverine sesarmid crab Sesarmops impressus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) is clarified. The species has been reported from Madagascar to the South Pacific, but its taxonomy was previously confused. On the basis of morphological characters and available molecular evidence (using 16S rDNA and cytochrome oxidase subunit I), Sesarmops impressus is restricted to the western Indian Ocean and S. frontale A. Milne-Edwards, 1869 is confirmed to be its junior synonym. Sesarmops similis (Hess, 1865), long synonymised under S. impressus, is here recognised as a separate species and a neotype from Samoa is designated. The identity of the poorly known S. atrorubens (Hess, 1865), which has often been confused with S. impressus, is also clarified, and a neotype is selected from Fiji. Specimens from the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific are here identified as two new species, S. indicus sp. nov. and S. imperator sp. nov.

Salangathelphusa peractio, a new species of lowland freshwater crab from Pulau Langkawi, Peninsular Malaysia (Crustacea, Brachyura, Gecarcinucidae).

Project description:A new species of lowland freshwater crab of the family Gecarcinucidae, Salangathelphusa peractio, is described from Langkawi, an island off the northwestern coast of peninsular Malaysia. Salangathelphusa peractiosp. n. can be separated from S. brevicarinata (Hilgendorf, 1882) in having a proportionately broader external orbital tooth, a distinctly concave posterolateral margin, and the terminal segment of the male first gonopod is not distinctly bent laterally outwards; and from S. anophrys (Kemp, 1923) by its more quadrate carapace and the terminal segment of the male first gonopod possessing a relatively longer and less curved distal part. This is sixth wholly freshwater brachyuran species known from the island.

Project description:Seven species of freshwater crabs from three families are recorded from and around the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo: Thelphusula capillodigitussp. n., Thelphusula dicerophilus Ng & Stuebing, 1990, Arachnothelphusa terrapes Ng, 1991, Terrathelphusa secula Ng & Tan, 2015, Parathelphusa valida Ng & Goh, 1987 (new record) (Gecarcinucidae); Isolapotamon ingeri Ng & Tan, 1998 (Potamidae); and Geosesarma danumense Ng, 2002 (Sesarmidae). The new species of Thelphusula Bott, 1979, can be distinguished from all congeners by a unique combination of morphological features, most notably the presence of dense patches of short setae on the fingers of the adult male chelipeds, as well as the structure of the male first gonopod. Arachnothelphusa terrapes is confirmed to be a phytotelm species. A key to all species in the conservation area is provided.

Land snails and slugs of Bau limestone hills, Sarawak (Malaysia, Borneo), with the descriptions of 13 new species.

Project description:This study presents a list of land snails and slugs found on limestone hills in the District of Bau, the state of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. Systematic and random sampling for land snails was conducted at eight limestone outcrops, namely, Gunung Stulang, Padang Pan, Gunung Kapor, Gunung Lobang Angin, Gunung Doya, Gunung Batu, Bukit Sekunyit and Gunung Sebayat. A total of 122 land snail species was documented with photographs of each species. Of the 122 species collected, 13 are new to science, namely, Acmella bauensis sp. nov., Japonia bauensis sp. nov., Plectostoma margaretchanae sp. nov., Microcystina arabii sp. nov., Microcystina atoni sp. nov., Microcystina paripari sp. nov., Microcystina lirata sp. nov., Microcystina oswaldbrakeni sp. nov., Microcystina kilat sp. nov., Philalanka jambusanensis sp. nov., Everettia microrhytida sp. nov., Everettia minuta sp. nov., and Paralaoma sarawakensis sp. nov.

Review of the mudflat varunid crab genus Metaplax (Crustacea, Brachyura, Varunidae) from East Asia and northern Vietnam.

Project description:Intertidal mudflat crabs of the genus Metaplax H. Milne Edwards, 1852 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Varunidae) from China, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam are taxonomically revised by morphological and molecular evidence. These crabs show sexual dimorphism and morphological variation of a considerable range in the infraorbital ridge, one of the primary features previously used for species identification. In this study, four species were identified from the region: M. elegans De Man, 1888; M. longipes Stimpson, 1858; M. sheni Gordon, 1930; and M. tredecim Tweedie, 1950. Based on the results of the morphological examination, and as confirmed by molecular evidence from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), taxonomic confusion surrounding M. longipes was resolved, and M. takahasii Sakai, 1939, is considered a junior synonym of M. longipes. The geographical distribution of Metaplax longipes extends along the shores of China, north to Jiangsu, whereas the Southeast Asian M. tredecim was newly recorded from northern Vietnam and Hong Kong.

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the karst-dwelling crab, Terrapotamon thungwa (Crustacea: Brachyura: Potamidae).

Project description:Terrapotamon thungwa is a new species of terrestrial long-legged crab discovered in a karst landscape of southern Thailand. Here, we report the first complete mitochondrial genome of this crab species. The mitochondrial genome size is 16,156 base-pairs (bp), including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA), and two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The AT and GC content of the mitochondrial genome sequence is 73.2% and 26.8%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis with 26 crustacean species, based on 13 mitochondrial conserve genes, showed that T. thungwa was closely related to other freshwater crab species in the family Potamidae.

Population genetics of the fiddler crab Uca sindensis (Alcock, 1900) (Crustacea: Brachyura: Ocypodidae) from the Arabian Sea.

Project description:BACKGROUND:The fiddler crab Ucasindensis (Alcock, 1900) (Crustacea: Brachyura: Ocypodidae) is distributed in the northern coasts of the Arabian Sea (Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait). Its typical habitat is on high intertidal areas with higher salinity, which might restrict its distribution, especially within the Persian Gulf. The purpose of the present phylogeographicstudy is to understand whether the Strait of Hormuz acts as a barrier to the gene flow of this species. RESULTS:The genetic analyses of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), and control region (CR) of specimens from various localities showed that there was no genetic differentiation between the populations inside and outside of the Persian Gulf. CONCLUSIONS:We conclude that the narrow Strait of Hormuz does not form a barrier for the larval dispersal in this species. Its restricted distribution in the northern Arabian Sea may instead be associated with its preference for higher salinity sediments present in the coasts of thisregion.
