Revision of Gymnomitriaceae (Marchantiophyta) in the Korean Peninsula.

ABSTRACT: This paper provides a revision of Gymnomitrion and Marsupella in the Korean Peninsula based on a study of the collections housed in the herbaria of Jeonbuk National University (JNU) and the Botanical Garden-Institute in Vladivostok (VBGI). In total, 12 species were recorded (six in Gymnomitrion and seven in Marsupella), including four taxa whose identity was not confirmed with the available materials and suspected to be recorded wrongly. Each confirmed species is annotated by morphological descriptions based on available Korean material, data on ecology, distribution, specimens examined as well as illustrations.

A new species is also described from the Russian Far East: Ptomaphagus (s. str.) hayashii sp. n. Relevant morphological characters of the concerned species are illustrated with colour plates, and their known distributions are mapped.

Complex System Analysis of Korean Peninsula Earthquake Data.

Project description:Earthquakes are natural disasters that cause damage in a wide range of regions and represent a complex system that does not have a clear causal relationship with specific observable factors. This research analyzes the earthquake activities on the Korean Peninsula with respect to spatial and temporal factors. Using logarithmic regression analysis, we showed that the relationship between the location of the earthquake and its frequency in these locations follows a power law distribution. In addition, we showed that since 1998 the average earthquake magnitude has decreased from 3.0143 to 2.5433 and the frequency has risen by 3.98 times. Finally, the spatial analysis revealed significantly concentrated earthquake activities in a few particular areas and showed that earthquake occurrence points have shifted southeast. This research showed the change in earthquake dynamics and concentration of earthquake activities in particular regions over time. This finding implies the necessity of further research on spatially-derived earthquake policies on the change of earthquake dynamics.

Integrative approaches to a revision of the liverwort in genus Aneura (Aneuraceae, Marchantiophyta) from Thailand.

Project description:BackgroundThe genus Aneura Dumort. is a simple thalloid liverwort with cosmopolitan distributions. Species circumscription is problematic in this genus due to a limited number of morphological traits. Two species are currently reported from Thailand, including A. maxima and A. pinguis. At the global scale, A. pinguis is considered a cryptic species, as the species contains several distinct genetic groups without clear morphological differentiation. At the same time, the identity of A. maxima remains unclear. In this work, we examined the level of diversity of Aneura species found in Thailand using both morphological and molecular data.MethodsWe measured the morphological traits and generated the molecular data (four markers: trnL-F, trnH-psbA, rbcL, and ITS2) from the Thai specimens. The concatenated dataset was then used to reconstruct phylogeny. Species delimitation with GMYC, bPTP, ASAP, and ABGD methods was performed to estimate the number of putative species within the genus.ResultsThe samples of A. pinguis formed several clades, while A. maxima sequences from Poland were grouped in their clade and nested within another A. pinguis clade. We could not recover a sample of A. maxima from Thailand, even from the reported locality. Two putative species were detected among Thai Aneura samples. However, no morphological trait could distinguish the specimens from the two observed genetic groups.DiscussionThe previously observed paraphyletic nature of A. pinguis globally was also found among Thai samples, including several putative species. However, we could not confirm the identity of A. maxima from Thai specimens. The previous report could result from misidentification and problematic species circumscription within Aneura. The results highlighted the need to include multiple lines of evidence for the future taxonomic investigation of the group.

A sketch of language history in the Korean Peninsula.

Project description:Among 7100 languages spoken on Earth, the Koreanic language is the 13th largest, with about 77 million speakers in and around the Korean Peninsula. In comparison to other languages of similar size, however, surprisingly little is known about the evolution of the Koreanic language. This is mainly due to two reasons. The first reason is that the genealogical relationship of the Koreanic to other neighboring languages remains uncertain, and thus inference from the linguistic comparative method provides only provisional evidence. The second reason is that, as the ancestral Koreanic speakers lacked their own writing system until around 500 years ago, there are scant historical materials to peer into the past, except for those preserved in Sinitic characters that we have no straightforward way of interpreting. Here I attempt to overcome these disadvantages and shed some light on the linguistic history of the Korean Peninsula, by analyzing the internal variation of the Koreanic language with methods adopted from evolutionary biology. The preliminary results presented here suggest that the evolutionary history of the Koreanic language is characterized by a weak hierarchical structure, and intensive gene/culture flows within the Korean Peninsula seem to have promoted linguistic homogeneity among the Koreanic variants. Despite the gene/culture flows, however, there are still three detectable linguistic barriers in the Korean Peninsula that appear to have been shaped by geographical features such as mountains, elevated areas, and ocean. I discuss these findings in an inclusive manner to lay the groundwork for future studies.

Calypogeia (Calypogeiaceae, Marchantiophyta) in Pacific Asia: Updates from Molecular Revision with Particular Attention to the Genus in North Indochina.

Project description:Calypogeia is a genus in Pacific Asia that is difficult to classify taxonomically. These difficulties arise from (1) considering the presence of oil bodies as anatomical characters for taxonomic differentiation, (2) the wide occurrence of sibling, semicryptic and geographical vicariant taxa and (3) the inevitable need to organize new datasets for molecular genetic revision of the genus. The present study uses an integrative approach, including molecular genetic, morphological, chorological and ecological methods, to understand the taxonomy of the genus in Amphi-Pacific Asia. As a result, a set of new-to-science taxa was revealed, and the suite of morphological features necessary for reliable discrimination of the taxa was revised. These results are based on the study of a large set of 'fresh' collections suitable for molecular analysis and morphological comparison and include data on oil bodies. The most basal branch in Calypogeia s.l. is segregated into a new genus, Asperifolia. Descriptions of the new taxa and the key to Calypogeia in Vietnam are provided.

Gene flow between the Korean peninsula and its neighboring countries.

Project description:SNP markers provide the primary data for population structure analysis. In this study, we employed whole-genome autosomal SNPs as a marker set (54,836 SNP markers) and tested their possible effects on genetic ancestry using 320 subjects covering 24 regional groups including Northern (=16) and Southern (=3) Asians, Amerindians (=1), and four HapMap populations (YRI, CEU, JPT, and CHB). Additionally, we evaluated the effectiveness and robustness of 50K autosomal SNPs with various clustering methods, along with their dependencies on recombination hotspots (RH), linkage disequilibrium (LD), missing calls and regional specific markers. The RH- and LD-free multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) method showed a broad picture of human migration from Africa to North-East Asia on our genome map, supporting results from previous haploid DNA studies. Of the Asian groups, the East Asian group showed greater differentiation than the Northern and Southern Asian groups with respect to Fst statistics. By extension, the analysis of monomorphic markers implied that nine out of ten historical regions in South Korea, and Tokyo in Japan, showed signs of genetic drift caused by the later settlement of East Asia (South Korea, Japan and China), while Gyeongju in South East Korea showed signs of the earliest settlement in East Asia. In the genome map, the gene flow to the Korean Peninsula from its neighboring countries indicated that some genetic signals from Northern populations such as the Siberians and Mongolians still remain in the South East and West regions, while few signals remain from the early Southern lineages.

Climate-induced distribution dynamics and niche adaptation of South Korean endemic plants across the Korean Peninsula.

Project description:As climate change intensifies, endemic plants native to South Korea, especially those in specialized ecological niches, confront heightened risks of distribution shifts and habitat degradation. To provide a comprehensive understanding of these impacts, this study evaluates the climate-induced distribution dynamics and niche adaptation of these endemic species across the entire Korean Peninsula. Utilizing species distribution models (SDMs) for 179 plant species and incorporating environmental variables under projected future climate scenarios, our analysis identified unique distribution and niche adaptation patterns. Findings demonstrate that specialized endemic species are likely to migrate to higher altitudes and latitudes, highlighting their distinct vulnerability due to limited ecological niches. Our comparative approach underscores the necessity for refined conservation strategies that address the specific requirements of these endemic species, as opposed to those with wider distributions. This research offers valuable insights into biodiversity conservation amid climate change, proposing targeted actions such as the establishment of protected areas, habitat restoration, and the implementation of assisted migration strategies to safeguard these vital endemic plant species throughout the Korean Peninsula.

Increasing peak intensity of tropical cyclones passing through the Korean Peninsula.

Project description:An increasing trend along with an abrupt increase in the peak intensity of tropical cyclones (TCs) passing through the Korean Peninsula (KP) are significantly detected from 1981 to 2020 and since 2003, respectively. Here we present observational evidence that such trend and shift are largely attributed with the increased passages of intense TCs in the KP during the mature boreal autumn (i.e., September-October, SO) and linked with the recent shift of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) to its negative phase. A negative PDO during SO is related to environmental changes that are favorable for more intense TC passages in the KP including a weakened East Asian subtropical jet stream, weaker vertical wind shear, warmer subtropical sea surface temperature, and stronger low-level relative vorticity. Such findings are expected to provide new insights on understanding regional TC variability and ultimately, contribute to long range TC prediction initiatives in the KP region.

Taxonomic Revision of Korean Saddle Fungi (Helvella, Helvellaceae).

Project description:Helvella, commonly known as saddle fungi, is a genus in the Helvellaceae family and is distributed globally. Recent comprehensive studies on Helvella have revealed that some Helvella species exhibit endemic traits and that many morphologically similar, cryptic species are phylogenetically distant. In this study, 202 Korean Helvella specimens collected between 1986 and 2023 were reevaluated through morphological analysis and phylogenetic characterization using barcode sequences, including nrLSU (nuclear Large Subunit Ribosomal DNA), hsp90 (Heat Shock Protein 90), and ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer). The investigation confirmed the presence of at least 35 phylogenetic species in Korea. Among these, eight species (H. atroides, H. fistulosa, H. liquii, H. lobata, H. rugosa, H. subglabroides, H. sublactea, H. varia) were identified as previously unrecorded species in Korea, and seven new species (H. densipila, H. flavopus, H. macrospora, H. griseobrunnea, H. pseudolobata, H. parviflava, H. suborentitomentosa) were discovered. Of the 13 previously recorded Korean Helvella species, only three (H. ephippioides, H. macropus, H. orienticripsa) were confirmed, while the remaining ten species (H. acetabulum, H. atra, H. compressa, H. costifera, H. crispa, H. elastica, H. sublicia, H. fibrosa, H. lacunosa, H. pezizoides) were not detected in the samples studied. This study enhances our understanding of the distribution of Helvella species of Korea, revealing significant discrepancies between historical records and current findings. The discovery of new species and previously un-recorded species underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and reevaluation of fungal biodiversity.
