Metal Oxide Based Heterojunctions for Gas Sensors: A Review.

ABSTRACT: The construction of heterojunctions has been widely applied to improve the gas sensing performance of composites composed of nanostructured metal oxides. This review summarises the recent progress on assembly methods and gas sensing behaviours of sensors based on nanostructured metal oxide heterojunctions. Various methods, including the hydrothermal method, electrospinning and chemical vapour deposition, have been successfully employed to establish metal oxide heterojunctions in the sensing materials. The sensors composed with the built nanostructured heterojunctions were found to show enhanced gas sensing performance with higher sensor responses and shorter response times to the targeted reducing or oxidising gases compare with those of the pure metal oxides. Moreover, the enhanced gas sensing mechanisms of the metal oxide-based heterojunctions to the reducing or oxidising gases are also discussed, with the main emphasis on the important role of the potential barrier on the accumulation layer.

Project description:This article provides a comprehensive review of recent (2008 and 2009) progress in gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxide one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. During last few years, gas sensors based on semiconducting oxide 1D nanostructures have been widely investigated. Additionally, modified or doped oxide nanowires/nanobelts have also been synthesized and used for gas sensor applications. Moreover, novel device structures such as electronic noses and low power consumption self-heated gas sensors have been invented and their gas sensing performance has also been evaluated. Finally, we also point out some challenges for future investigation and practical application.

Recent Progress on Flexible Room-Temperature Gas Sensors Based on Metal Oxide Semiconductor.

Project description:With the rapid development of the Internet of Things, there is a great demand for portable gas sensors. Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are one of the most traditional and well-studied gas sensing materials and have been widely used to prepare various commercial gas sensors. However, it is limited by high operating temperature. The current research works are directed towards fabricating high-performance flexible room-temperature (FRT) gas sensors, which are effective in simplifying the structure of MOS-based sensors, reducing power consumption, and expanding the application of portable devices. This article presents the recent research progress of MOS-based FRT gas sensors in terms of sensing mechanism, performance, flexibility characteristics, and applications. This review comprehensively summarizes and discusses five types of MOS-based FRT gas sensors, including pristine MOS, noble metal nanoparticles modified MOS, organic polymers modified MOS, carbon-based materials (carbon nanotubes and graphene derivatives) modified MOS, and two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides materials modified MOS. The effect of light-illuminated to improve gas sensing performance is further discussed. Furthermore, the applications and future perspectives of FRT gas sensors are also discussed.

Nanostructured metal oxide semiconductor-based sensors for greenhouse gas detection: progress and challenges.

Project description:Climate change and global warming have been two massive concerns for the scientific community during the last few decades. Anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) have greatly amplified the level of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere which results in the gradual heating of the atmosphere. The precise measurement and reliable quantification of GHGs emission in the environment are of the utmost priority for the study of climate change. The detection of GHGs such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone is the first and foremost step in finding the solution to manage and reduce the concentration of these gases in the Earth's atmosphere. The nanostructured metal oxide semiconductor (NMOS) based technologies for sensing GHGs emission have been found most reliable and accurate. Owing to their fascinating structural and morphological properties metal oxide semiconductors become an important class of materials for GHGs emission sensing technology. In this review article, the current concentration of GHGs in the Earth's environment, dominant sources of anthropogenic emissions of these gases and consequently their possible impacts on human life have been described briefly. Further, the different available technologies for GHG sensors along with their principle of operation have been largely discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of each sensor technology have also been highlighted. In particular, this article presents a comprehensive study on the development of various NMOS-based GHGs sensors and their performance analysis in order to establish a strong detection technology for the anthropogenic GHGs. In the last, the scope for improved sensitivity, selectivity and response time for these sensors, their future trends and outlook for researchers are suggested in the conclusion of this article.

Thermo-Electro-Mechanical Simulation of Semiconductor Metal Oxide Gas Sensors.

Project description:There is a growing demand in the semiconductor industry to integrate many functionalities on a single portable device. The integration of sensor fabrication with the mature CMOS technology has made this level of integration a reality. However, sensors still require calibration and optimization before full integration. For this, modeling and simulation is essential, since attempting new, innovative designs in a laboratory requires a long time and expensive tests. In this manuscript we address aspects for the modeling and simulation of semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors, devices which have the highest potential for integration because of their CMOS-friendly fabrication capability and low operating power. We analyze recent advancements using FEM models to simulate the thermo-electro-mechanical behavior of the sensors. These simulations are essentials to calibrate the design choices and ensure low operating power and improve reliability. The primary consumer of power is a microheater which is essential to heat the sensing film to appropriately high temperatures in order to initiate the sensing mechanism. Electro-thermal models to simulate its operation are presented here, using FEM and the Cauer network model. We show that the simpler Cauer model, which uses an electrical circuit to model the thermo-electrical behavior, can efficiently reproduce experimental observations.

Metal-organic frameworks for advanced transducer based gas sensors: review and perspectives.

Project description:The development of gas sensing devices to detect environmentally toxic, hazardous, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has witnessed a surge of immense interest over the past few decades, motivated mainly by the significant progress in technological advancements in the gas sensing field. A great deal of research has been dedicated to developing robust, cost-effective, and miniaturized gas sensing platforms with high efficiency. Compared to conventional metal-oxide based gas sensing materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered tremendous attention in a variety of fields, including the gas sensing field, due to their fascinating features such as high adsorption sites for gas molecules, high porosity, tunable morphologies, structural diversities, and ability of room temperature (RT) sensing. This review summarizes the current advancement in various pristine MOF materials and their composites for different electrical transducer-based gas sensing applications. The review begins with a discussion on the overview of gas sensors, the significance of MOFs, and their scope in the gas sensing field. Next, gas sensing applications are divided into four categories based on different advanced transducers: chemiresistive, capacitive, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and organic field-effect transistor (OFET) based gas sensors. Their fundamental concepts, gas sensing ability towards various gases, sensing mechanisms, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Finally, this review is concluded with a summary, existing challenges, and future perspectives.

Impact of a Diverse Combination of Metal Oxide Gas Sensors on Machine Learning-Based Gas Recognition in Mixed Gases.

Project description:A challenge for chemiresistive-type gas sensors distinguishing mixture gases is that for highly accurate recognition, massive data processing acquired from various types of sensor configurations must be considered. The impact of data processing is indeed ineffective and time-consuming. Herein, we systemically investigate the effect of the selectivity for a target gas on the prediction accuracy of gas concentration via machine learning based on a support vector machine model. The selectivity factor S(X) of a gas sensor for a target gas "X" is introduced to reveal the correlation between the prediction accuracy and selectivity of gas sensors. The presented work suggests that (i) the strong correlation between the selectivity factor and prediction accuracy has a proportional relationship, (ii) the enhancement of the prediction accuracy of an elemental sensor with a low sensitivity factor can be attained by a complementary combination of the other sensor with a high selectivity factor, and (iii) it can also be boosted by combining the sensor having even a low selectivity factor.

Metal oxide heterojunctions using a printable nickel oxide ink.

Project description:Wide band gap metal oxides are ideally suited for inorganic optoelectronic devices. While zinc oxide is a commonly used n-type material, there is still a lot of ongoing work for finding suitable p-type oxides. In this work, we describe a two-step route to formulate a stable and conducting p-type nickel oxide (NiO) nanofluid. NiO nanoparticles were synthesised using a bottom-up wet chemical approach and dispersed in ethylene glycol to form a nanofluid. The viscosity and surface tension of the nanofluid were optimised for printing. The printing was done using an extrusion-based direct writer. The NiO nanofluid was printed onto an aluminum-doped zinc oxide layer and annealed at different temperatures. Electrical characterisation of the junction was used to extract the junction barrier for carriers across the interface. The resulting heterojunction was found to exhibit rectifying behaviour, with the highest rectification ratio occurring at an annealing temperature of 250 °C. This annealing temperature also resulted in the lowest junction barrier height, and was in excellent agreement with theoretically predicted values. The development of a printed p-type ink will help in the realisation of oxide-based printed electronic devices.

Reversible spin storage in metal oxide-fullerene heterojunctions.

Project description:We show that hybrid MnOx/C60 heterojunctions can be used to design a storage device for spin-polarized charge: a spin capacitor. Hybridization at the carbon-metal oxide interface leads to spin-polarized charge trapping after an applied voltage or photocurrent. Strong electronic structure changes, including a 1-eV energy shift and spin polarization in the C60 lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, are then revealed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, in agreement with density functional theory simulations. Muon spin spectroscopy measurements give further independent evidence of local spin ordering and magnetic moments optically/electronically stored at the heterojunctions. These spin-polarized states dissipate when shorting the electrodes. The spin storage decay time is controlled by magnetic ordering at the interface, leading to coherence times of seconds to hours even at room temperature.

Rhodium Oxide Surface-Loaded Gas Sensors.

Project description:In order to increase their stability and tune-sensing characteristics, metal oxides are often surface-loaded with noble metals. Although a great deal of empirical work shows that surface-loading with noble metals drastically changes sensing characteristics, little information exists on the mechanism. Here, a systematic study of sensors based on rhodium-loaded WO₃, SnO₂, and In₂O₃-examined using X-ray diffraction, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, direct current (DC) resistance measurements, operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy-is presented. Under normal sensing conditions, the rhodium clusters were oxidized. Significant evidence is provided that, in this case, the sensing is dominated by a Fermi-level pinning mechanism, i.e., the reaction with the target gas takes place on the noble-metal cluster, changing its oxidation state. As a result, the heterojunction between the oxidized rhodium clusters and the base metal oxide was altered and a change in the resistance was detected. Through measurements done in low-oxygen background, it was possible to induce a mechanism switch by reducing the clusters to their metallic state. At this point, there was a significant drop in the overall resistance, and the reaction between the target gas and the base material was again visible. For decades, noble metal loading was used to change the characteristics of metal-oxide-based sensors. The study presented here is an attempt to clarify the mechanism responsible for the change. Generalities are shown between the sensing mechanisms of different supporting materials loaded with rhodium, and sample-specific aspects that must be considered are identified.

Project description:This article discusses the features of the synthesis and application of porous two-dimensional nanomaterials in developing conductometric gas sensors based on metal oxides. It is concluded that using porous 2D nanomaterials and 3D structures based on them is a promising approach to improving the parameters of gas sensors, such as sensitivity and the rate of response. The limitations that may arise when using 2D structures in gas sensors intended for the sensor market are considered.
