Multifunctional Magnetic Nanocolloids for Hybrid Solar-Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting.

ABSTRACT: Present environmental issues force the research to explore radically new concepts in sustainable and renewable energy production. In the present work, a functional fluid consisting of a stable colloidal suspension of maghemite magnetic nanoparticles in water was characterized from the points of view of thermoelectrical and optical properties, to evaluate its potential for direct electricity generation from thermoelectric effect enabled by the absorption of sunlight. These nanoparticles were found to be an excellent solar radiation absorber and simultaneously a thermoelectric power-output enhancer with only a very small volume fraction when the fluid was heated from the top. These findings demonstrate the investigated nanofluid's high promise as a heat transfer fluid for co-generating heat and power in brand new hybrid flat-plate solar thermal collectors where top-heating geometry is imposed.

Hybrid Microwave/Solar Energy Harvesting System Using 3D-Printed Metasurfaces.

Project description:In this study, a hybrid energy harvesting system based on a conventional solar cell combined with 3D-printed metasurface units is studied. Millimeter-scale metasurface units were fabricated via the stereolithography technique, and then they were covered with conductive silver paint, in order to achieve high electric conductivity. The performance of single, as well as two-unit metasurface harvesters, was thoroughly investigated. It was found that both of them produced voltage, which peaks at their resonance frequency, demonstrating efficient energy harvesting behavior in the microwave regime. Then, the metasurface units were connected with a commercially available photovoltaic panel and the performance of the hybrid system was examined under different environmental conditions, modifying the light intensity (i.e., light, dark and shadow). It was shown that the proposed hybrid harvesting system produces a sizable voltage output, which persists, even in the case when one of the components does not contribute. Furthermore, the performance of the hybrid harvester is found to be adequate enough, although optimization of the harvesting circuit is required in order to achieve high efficiency levels. All in all, the presented experimental evidence clearly indicates the realization of a rather promising hybrid energy harvesting system, exploiting two distinct ambient energy sources, namely light and microwaves.

3D extruded composite thermoelectric threads for flexible energy harvesting.

Project description:Whereas the rigid nature of standard thermoelectrics limits their use, flexible thermoelectric platforms can find much broader applications, for example, in low-power, wearable energy harvesting for internet-of-things applications. Here we realize continuous, flexible thermoelectric threads via a rapid extrusion of 3D-printable composite inks (Bi2Te3 n- or p-type micrograins within a non-conducting polymer as a binder) followed by compression through a roller-pair, and we demonstrate their applications in flexible, low-power energy harvesting. The thermoelectric power factors of these threads are enhanced up to 7 orders-of-magnitude after lateral compression, principally due to improved conductivity resulting from reduced void volume fraction and partial alignment of thermoelectric micrograins. This dependence is quantified using a conductivity/Seebeck vise for pressure-controlled studies. The resulting grain-to-grain conductivity is well explained with a modified percolation theory to model a pressure-dependent conductivity. Flexible thermoelectric modules are demonstrated to utilize thermal gradients either parallel or transverse to the thread direction.

Economic Convenience of Hybrid Thermoelectric-Photovoltaic Solar Harvesters.

Project description:Over the last few years, a growing interest has surfaced about the possibility of enhancing solar harvester efficiency by coupling photovoltaic (PV) cells with thermoelectric generators (TEGs). To be effective solutions, hybrid thermoelectric-photovoltaic (HTEPV) solar harvesters must not only increase the solar conversion efficiency but should also be economically competitive. The aim of this paper is to estimate the profitability of HTEPV solar harvesters with no reference to specific materials, relating it instead to their physical properties only and thus providing a tool to address research effort toward classes of HTEPV systems able to compete with current PV technologies. An economic convenience index is defined and used to assess the economic sustainability of hybridization. It is found that, although hybridization often leads to enhanced solar power conversion, power costs (USD/W) may not always justify HTEPV deployment at the current stage of technology. An analysis of the cost structure shows that profitability requires largely enhanced thermoelectric stages, concentrated solar cells, or PV materials with favorable temperature efficiency coefficients, such as perovskite solar cells.

Simultaneous harvesting of radiative cooling and solar heating for transverse thermoelectric generation.

Project description:For any thermoelectric effects to be achieved, a thermoelectric material must have hot and cold sides. Typically, the hot side can be easily obtained by excess heat. However, the passive cooling method is often limited to convective heat transfer to the surroundings. Since thermoelectric voltage is proportional to the temperature difference between the hot and cold sides, efficient passive cooling to increase the temperature gradient is of critical importance. Here, we report simultaneous harvesting of radiative cooling at the top and solar heating at the bottom to enhance the temperature gradient for a transverse thermoelectric effect which generates thermoelectric voltage perpendicular to the temperature gradient. We demonstrate this concept by using the spin Seebeck effect and confirm that the spin Seebeck device shows the highest thermoelectric voltage when both radiative cooling and solar heating are utilized. Furthermore, the device generates thermoelectric voltage even at night through radiative cooling which enables continuous energy harvesting throughout a day. Planar geometry and scalable fabrication process are advantageous for energy harvesting applications.

A perovskite solar cell-photothermal-thermoelectric tandem system for enhanced solar energy utilization.

Project description:Photovoltaic-thermoelectric (PV-TE) tandem system has been considered as an effective way to fully utilize the solar spectrum, and has been demonstrated in a perovskite solar cell (PSC)-thermoelectric (TE) configuration. However, the conventional PSC-TE tandem architecture cannot convert infrared light transmitted through the upper PSC into heat effectively, impeding the heat-electricity conversion of TE devices. Herein, a semi-transparent PSC-photothermal-TE tandem system is designed for improved photothermal utilization. Through optimizing the buffer layer of the back transparent electrode, semi-transparent PSC with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13% and an average transmittance of 53% in the range of 800-1500 nm was obtained. On this basis, a photothermal thin film was introduced between the semi-transparent PSC and the TE device, which increased the efficiency contribution ratio of the TE device from 14% to 19%, showing enhanced utilization of AM 1.5 G solar spectrum and improved photo-thermal-electric conversion efficiency.

Multifunctional Meta-Tribomaterial Nanogenerators for Energy Harvesting and Active Sensing.

Project description:Discovering novel multifunctional metamaterials with energy harvesting and sensing functionalities is likely to be the next technological evolution of the metamaterial science. Here, we introduce a novel concept called self-aware composite mechanical metamaterial (SCMM) that can transform mechanical metamaterials into nanogenerators and active sensing mediums. In pursuit of this goal, we examine new paradigms where finely tailored and seamlessly integrated self-recovering snapping microstructures composed of topologically different triboelectric materials can form self-powering and self-sensing meta-tribomaterial systems. We explore various deformation mechanisms required to induce contact electrification between these snapping microstructures under periodic deformations. The multifunctional meta-tribomaterial systems created under the SCMM concept will act as triboelectric nanogenerators capable of generating electrical signals in response to the applied mechanical excitations. The generated electrical signal can be used for active sensing of the applied force and can be stored for empowering sensors and embedded electronics. We conduct theoretical and experimental studies to understand the mechanical and electrical behavior of the multifunctional SCMM systems. The broad application of the proposed SCMM concept for designing artificial materials with novel properties and functionalities is highlighted via prototyping self-powering and self-sensing blood vessel stents and shock absorbers.

Compliant and stretchable thermoelectric coils for energy harvesting in miniature flexible devices.

Project description:With accelerating trends in miniaturization of semiconductor devices, techniques for energy harvesting become increasingly important, especially in wearable technologies and sensors for the internet of things. Although thermoelectric systems have many attractive attributes in this context, maintaining large temperature differences across the device terminals and achieving low-thermal impedance interfaces to the surrounding environment become increasingly difficult to achieve as the characteristic dimensions decrease. Here, we propose and demonstrate an architectural solution to this problem, where thin-film active materials integrate into compliant, open three-dimensional (3D) forms. This approach not only enables efficient thermal impedance matching but also multiplies the heat flow through the harvester, thereby increasing the efficiencies for power conversion. Interconnected arrays of 3D thermoelectric coils built using microscale ribbons of monocrystalline silicon as the active material demonstrate these concepts. Quantitative measurements and simulations establish the basic operating principles and the key design features. The results suggest a scalable strategy for deploying hard thermoelectric thin-film materials in harvesters that can integrate effectively with soft materials systems, including those of the human body.

Triboelectric-Electromagnetic Hybrid Generator for Harvesting Blue Energy.

Project description:Progress has been developed in harvesting low-frequency and irregular blue energy using a triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid generator in recent years. However, the design of the high-efficiency, mechanically durable hybrid structure is still challenging. In this study, we report a fully packaged triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid generator (TEHG), in which magnets were utilized as the trigger to drive contact-separation-mode triboelectric nanogenerators (CS-TENGs) and coupled with copper coils to operate rotary freestanding-mode electromagnetic generators (RF-EMGs). The magnet pairs that produce attraction were used to transfer the external mechanical energy to the CS-TENGs, and packaging of the CS-TENG part was achieved to protect it from the ambient environment. Under a rotatory speed of 100 rpm, the CS-TENGs enabled the TEHG to deliver an output voltage, current, and average power of 315.8 V, 44.6 μA, and ~ 90.7 μW, and the output of the RF-EMGs was 0.59 V, 1.78 mA, and 79.6 μW, respectively. The cylinder-like structure made the TEHG more easily driven by water flow and demonstrated to work as a practical power source to charge commercial capacitors. It can charge a 33 μF capacitor from 0 to 2.1 V in 84 s, and the stored energy in the capacitor can drive an electronic thermometer and form a self-powered water-temperature sensing system.

Multibandgap quantum dot ensembles for solar-matched infrared energy harvesting.

Project description:As crystalline silicon solar cells approach in efficiency their theoretical limit, strategies are being developed to achieve efficient infrared energy harvesting to augment silicon using solar photons from beyond its 1100 nm absorption edge. Herein we report a strategy that uses multi-bandgap lead sulfide colloidal quantum dot (CQD) ensembles to maximize short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage simultaneously. We engineer the density of states to achieve simultaneously a large quasi-Fermi level splitting and a tailored optical response that matches the infrared solar spectrum. We shape the density of states by selectively introducing larger-bandgap CQDs within a smaller-bandgap CQD population, achieving a 40 meV increase in open-circuit voltage. The near-unity internal quantum efficiency in the optimized multi-bandgap CQD ensemble yielded a maximized photocurrent of 3.7 ± 0.2 mA cm-2. This provides a record for silicon-filtered power conversion efficiency equal to one power point, a 25% (relative) improvement compared to the best previously-reported results.

Multifunctional Carbon Fiber Composites: A Structural, Energy Harvesting, Strain-Sensing Material.

Project description:Multifunctional structural materials are capable of reducing system level mass and increasing efficiency in load-carrying structures. Materials that are capable of harvesting energy from the surrounding environment are advantageous for autonomous electrically powered systems. However, most energy harvesting materials are non-structural and add parasitic mass, reducing structural efficiency. Here, we show a structural energy harvesting composite material consisting of two carbon fiber (CF) layers embedded in a structural battery electrolyte (SBE) with a longitudinal modulus of 100 GPa─almost on par with commercial CF pre-pregs. Energy is harvested through mechanical deformations using the piezo-electrochemical transducer (PECT) effect in lithiated CFs. The PECT effect creates a voltage difference between the two CF layers, driving a current when deformed. A specific power output of 18 nW/g is achieved. The PECT effect in the lithiated CFs is observed in tension and compression and can be used for strain sensing, enabling structural health monitoring with low added mass. The same material has previously been shown capable of shape morphing. The two additional functionalities presented here result in a material capable of four functions, further demonstrating the diverse possibilities for CF/SBE composites in multifunctional applications in the future.
