Childhood socioeconomic status is associated with psychometric intelligence and microstructural brain development.

ABSTRACT: Childhood socioeconomic status is robustly associated with various children's cognitive factors and neural mechanisms. Here we show the association of childhood socioeconomic status with psychometric intelligence and mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy using diffusion tensor imaging at the baseline experiment (N = 285) and longitudinal changes in these metrics after 3.0 ± 0.3 years (N = 223) in a large sample of normal Japanese children (mean age = 11.2 ± 3.1 years). After correcting for confounding factors, cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses show that higher childhood socioeconomic status is associated with greater baseline and baseline to follow-up increase of psychometric intelligence and mean diffusivity in areas around the bilateral fusiform gyrus. These results demonstrate that higher socioeconomic status is associated with higher psychometric intelligence measures and altered microstructural properties in the fusiform gyrus which plays a key role in reading and letter recognition and further augmentation of such tendencies during development. Definitive conclusions regarding the causality of these relationships requires intervention and physiological studies. However, the current findings should be considered when developing and revising policies regarding education.

Project description:The developmental health of young children is highly influenced by the socioeconomic conditions in which they are raised. How to accurately measure these conditions is a point of debate in the current literature on child development, health, and social determinants. We have evaluated four existing indices of socioeconomic status (SES) to determine the most relevant for the analysis of early childhood development (ECD) in Canada. Following a literature review of published SES indices which used 2006 Canadian Census data, four indices were chosen based on their relevance to ECD and the number of citations in subsequent articles. These were: the Canadian Deprivation Index, the Socioeconomic Factor Index, the Canadian Marginalization Index and an index created by the Early Childhood Mapping Project in Alberta, Canada. The indices were replicated using SES data for 2038 customized geographic neighbourhoods encompassing 99.9% of the Canadian population, and the relationship of the indices to ECD was investigated by linking to aggregated data from the Early Development Instrument (EDI), a teacher-completed questionnaire used to assess kindergarten children's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development, and communication skills. The derived SES indices were compared based on four criteria: the input variables used, the index structure, the interpretability of the index and the variance they explained (R2) in the different EDI outcome measures. In terms of variance explained, material components of the SES indices (e.g., income, education) consistently showed the strongest association with children's language and cognitive development. The patterns of association for the non-material SES components and the other developmental domains of the EDI were more complex. We discuss the findings in regard to current developments in the field, and the need for refining empirical and theoretical approaches to examine associations between different facets of SES contextual factors and different aspects of ECD outcomes.

Project description:ObjectivesLower socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with increased dental pain among children. Lower SES in childhood may also contribute to the experience of dental pain among older adults, regardless of the SES in later life. However, this association is still unclear.MethodsWe used cross-sectional data from the 2019 Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study using self-administrated questionnaires to investigate the causal mediating pathways between childhood SES and dental pain in later life using several SES variables collected at older age as potential mediators. A total of 21,212 physically and cognitively independent participants aged 65 y or older were included in the analysis. The dependent variable was experiencing dental pain during the past 6 mo. The independent variable was the SES at the age of 15 y (low/middle/high). Ten covariates were selected covering demographics and other domains. Education, subjective current income, objective current income, objective current property ownership, and the number of remaining teeth were used as mediators. Prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for dental pain by childhood SES were calculated using a modified Poisson regression model.ResultsThe mean age of the study participants was 74.5 ± 6.2 y, and 47.5% were men. Of these, 6,222 participants (29.3%) experienced dental pain during the past 6 mo, and 8,537 participants (40.2%) were of low childhood SES. Adjusted for covariates and mediators, the participants with middle and high childhood SES had a lower PR of dental pain (PR = 0.93 [95%, CI 0.89-0.98], PR = 0.79 [95% CI, 0.73-0.85], respectively). Almost 40% of the association between childhood SES and dental pain at older age was mediated via SES in later life and the number of teeth.ConclusionsThis study reemphasizes the importance of support for early-life SES to maintain favorable oral health outcomes at an older age.Knowledge Transfer Statement:The results of this study can be used by policymakers to promote policies based on a life-course approach that supports children living in communities with low SES and helps them maintain favorable oral health outcomes into their older age.
