The Lack of Association between Plant-Based Dietary Pattern and Breast Cancer: a Hospital-Based Case-Control Study.

ABSTRACT: Our purpose was to assess the association between plant-based dietary patterns and breast cancer (BrCa) among Iranian women. This hospital-based case-control study included 150 newly diagnosed BrCa cases and 150 age-matched controls from the Cancer Research Center, Imam Khomeini hospital, Iran. Three indices of a plant-based diet were first calculated: plant-based diet index (PDI), the healthy PDI (hPDI), and the unhealthy PDI (uPDI). In the overall PDI, all plant foods scored positively. In hPDI and uPDI, healthy and less healthy plant foods scored positive, respectively. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) in the highest adherence of PDI was 1.00 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55-1.83). In hPDI, 0.89 (95% CI, 0.49-1.62); in uPDI, 1.80 (95% CI, 0.95-3.42). The adjusted OR after subgroup analysis for body mass index (BMI) was as follow, BMI > 25: 0.77(95% CI, 0.37-1.61) comparing highest with the lowest tertile of PDI, 0.91(95% CI, 0.44-1.89) comparing highest with the lowest tertile of hPDI and this value for uPDI was 2.04 (95% CI, 0.91-4.56). BMI < 25: OR for top tertile of PDI was 1.82 (95% CI, 0.48-6.93), top tertile of hPDI was 1.47 (95% CI, 0.35-6.22) and top tertile of uPDI was 2.29 (95% CI, 0.54-9.70). Our results revealed no significant association between none of the PDIs and the chance of BrCa in Iranian women. Continued and expanded research, evaluated by different methods and BrCa is urgently needed to build the foundation for future progress in evidence-based public health efforts.

Project description:BackgroundAging is a dynamic and heterogeneous process that may better be captured by trajectories of aging biomarkers. Biological age has been advocated as a better biomarker of aging than chronological age, and plant-based dietary patterns have been found to be linked to aging. However, the associations of biological age trajectories with mortality and plant-based dietary patterns remained unclear.MethodsUsing group-based trajectory modeling approach, we identified distinctive aging trajectory groups among 12,784 participants based on a recently developed biological aging measure acquired at four-time points within an 8-year period. We then examined associations between aging trajectories and quintiles of plant-based dietary patterns assessed by overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful PDI (hPDI), and unhealthful PDI (uPDI) among 10,191 participants who had complete data on dietary intake, using multivariable multinomial logistics regression adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyles factors. Cox proportional hazards regression models were applied to investigate the association between aging trajectories and all-cause mortality.ResultsWe identified three latent classes of accelerated aging trajectories: slow aging, medium-degree, and high-degree accelerated aging trajectories. Participants who had higher PDI or hPDI had lower odds of being in medium-degree (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.65, 0.86 for PDI; OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.85 for hPDI) or high-degree (OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.46, 0.86 for PDI; OR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.44, 0.88 for hPDI) accelerated aging trajectories. Participants in the highest quintile of uPDI were more likely to be in medium-degree (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.48, 1.99) or high-degree (OR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.21, 2.38) accelerated aging trajectories. With a mean follow-up time of 8.40 years and 803 (6.28%) participants died by the end of follow-up, we found that participants in medium-degree (HR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.29, 1.89) or high-degree (HR = 3.72, 95% CI: 2.73, 5.08) accelerated aging trajectory groups had higher risks of death than those in the slow aging trajectory.ConclusionsWe identified three distinctive aging trajectories in a large Asian cohort and found that adopting a plant-based dietary pattern, especially when rich in healthful plant foods, was associated with substantially lowered pace of aging.

Project description:IntroductionBreast cancer is presently the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, and it stands as the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Notably, breast cancer rates have seen a significant increase in sub-Saharan African countries, including Ethiopia. Several risk factors contribute to breast cancer, some of which can be modified, while others are inherent. Promoting a healthier diet is strongly encouraged as a preventive measure against breast cancer. However, it's noteworthy that no previous research has investigated the connection between dietary patterns and the risk of breast cancer among Ethiopian women. Therefore, the primary objective of the current study is to examine the relationship between dietary patterns, socioeconomic and behavior factors associated with breast cancer in Ethiopian women.MethodsA case-control study was conducted at an institution in Bahir Dar, Northwest Ethiopia, involving 260 women, comprising 86 cases and 174 controls. We administered a standardized and validated questionnaire to assess a range of sociodemographic, reproductive, clinical, lifestyle, and dietary characteristics through face-to-face interviews. To analyze the differences between the cases and controls, we employed the Chi-square test. Furthermore, we assessed the relationships between these variables using binary multivariate logistic regression. To measure the association between variables, we utilized odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.ResultsThe results of the multivariate analysis indicated that participants in the younger age group had significantly lower odds of developing breast cancer (AOR = 0.05; 95% CI: 0.00-0.91) compared to those in the older age group. Additionally, women who breastfed their children for shorter durations were 3.66 times more likely to develop breast cancer (AOR = 3.66; 95% CI: 2.78-6.89) than those who breastfed for longer periods. Furthermore, women with sedentary lifestyles faced a significantly higher risk of breast cancer, with odds 10.53 times greater (AOR = 10.53; 95% CI: 5.21-21.36) than their counterparts who engaged in moderate or highly active lifestyles. Lastly, participants who had previously undergone chest therapy were 6.43 times more likely to develop breast cancer (AOR = 6.43; 95% CI: 3.20-13.90) compared to those who had not.ConclusionsBreast cancer prevention interventions, including breastfeeding counseling and increased physical activity should be recognized as a central strategy for lowering breast cancer risk. Furthermore, healthcare providers should aim to minimize exposure to chest radiation therapy.

Project description:BackgroundThe rising prevalence of colorectal cancer (CRC) may be attributed to various nutritional and behavioural factors, making both factors as important topics for discussion to the layman and the oncology community.ObjectiveTo explore additional dietary risk factors, other than those already known, according to the Ayurvedic perspective in CRC patients.MethodsDetail dietary data was collected from 420 patients of CRC and 116 healthy volunteers registered at our institute with the help of a food frequency questionnaire. Descriptive analysis was done by plotting radar charts, whereas the logistic regression models were used to calculate the adjusted Odd Ratios (ORs) associated with consumption of green chilli, red chilli powder and curd, individually and in combinations.ResultsThe controls in the present study were younger, had more males, the majority of them belonged to middle- and lower-income groups and had a family history of cancer as compared with cohort of case studies. Green chilli consumption was found to be the maximum within the lower-income group (n = 18, 66.67%), while that of red chilli (n = 150, 48.23%), and curd (n = 107, 34.04%) within the middle class. Maximum consumption of green chillies (Males n = 48, 29.27%; Females n = 36, 21.95%), red chillies (Males n = 40, 29.85%; Females n = 16, 24.61%) and curd (Males n = 31, 28.97%) was observed in the age group 46 to 60 irrespective of sex. Tobacco was found to be the most common addiction in all groups. The maximum number of patients frequently consuming these three dietary items presented majorly with rectal cancer, and liver metastasis and were in advanced grade and stage of cancer. Curd and curd with red chilli powder had a significant association with the development of CRC with an OR of 2.7280 (95% CI 1.6346 to 4.5531) and 5.0806 (95% CI 2.4015 to 10.7485), respectively, which was highly significant (p < 0.0001). Green chilli was notably an associated risk with an OR of 2.0095 (95% CI 1.3258 to 3.0458), which was also statistically significant (p = 0.001). Red chilli powder and green chilli with curd had ORs as 1.6917 (95% CI 1.1105 to 2.5771) and 2.1778 (95% CI 1.1591 to 4.0918) with p = 0.0144 and 0.0156, respectively.ConclusionIn the present study, green chilli, red chilli, and curd are identified as additional dietary risk factors for colorectal cancers, owing to their ability to produce chronic inflammation leading to various inflammatory conditions including cancer.
