Elliptically polarized high-harmonic radiation for production of isolated attosecond pulses.

ABSTRACT: Circularly polarized attosecond pulses are powerful tool to study chiral light-matter interaction via chiral electron dynamics. However, access to isolated circularly polarized attosecond pulses enabling straightforward interpretation of measurements, still remains a challenge. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the generation of highly elliptically polarized high-harmonics in a two-color, bi-circular, collinear laser field. The intensity and shape of the combined few-cycle driving radiation is optimized to produce a broadband continuum with enhanced spectral chirality in the range of 15-55 eV supporting the generation of isolated attosecond pulses with duration down to 150 as. We apply spectrally resolved polarimetry to determine the full Stokes vector of different spectral components of the continuum, yielding a homogenous helicity distribution with ellipticity in the range of 0.8-0.95 and a negligible unpolarized content.

Tomographic reconstruction of circularly polarized high-harmonic fields: 3D attosecond metrology.

Project description:Bright, circularly polarized, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray high-harmonic beams can now be produced using counter-rotating circularly polarized driving laser fields. Although the resulting circularly polarized harmonics consist of relatively simple pairs of peaks in the spectral domain, in the time domain, the field is predicted to emerge as a complex series of rotating linearly polarized bursts, varying rapidly in amplitude, frequency, and polarization. We extend attosecond metrology techniques to circularly polarized light by simultaneously irradiating a copper surface with circularly polarized high-harmonic and linearly polarized infrared laser fields. The resulting temporal modulation of the photoelectron spectra carries essential phase information about the EUV field. Utilizing the polarization selectivity of the solid surface and by rotating the circularly polarized EUV field in space, we fully retrieve the amplitude and phase of the circularly polarized harmonics, allowing us to reconstruct one of the most complex coherent light fields produced to date.

Nanoscale magnetic imaging using circularly polarized high-harmonic radiation.

Project description:This work demonstrates nanoscale magnetic imaging using bright circularly polarized high-harmonic radiation. We utilize the magneto-optical contrast of worm-like magnetic domains in a Co/Pd multilayer structure, obtaining quantitative amplitude and phase maps by lensless imaging. A diffraction-limited spatial resolution of 49 nm is achieved with iterative phase reconstruction enhanced by a holographic mask. Harnessing the exceptional coherence of high harmonics, this approach will facilitate quantitative, element-specific, and spatially resolved studies of ultrafast magnetization dynamics, advancing both fundamental and applied aspects of nanoscale magnetism.

Enhanced multi-colour gating for the generation of high-power isolated attosecond pulses.

Project description:Isolated attosecond pulses (IAP) generated by high-order harmonic generation are valuable tools that enable dynamics to be studied on the attosecond time scale. The applicability of these IAP would be widened drastically by increasing their energy. Here we analyze the potential of using multi-colour driving pulses for temporally gating the attosecond pulse generation process. We devise how this approach can enable the generation of IAP with the available high-energy kHz-repetition-rate Ytterbium-based laser amplifiers (delivering 180-fs, 1030-nm pulses). We show theoretically that this requires a three-colour field composed of the fundamental and its second harmonic as well as a lower-frequency auxiliary component. We present pulse characterization measurements of such auxiliary pulses generated directly by white-light seeded OPA with the required significantly shorter pulse duration than that of the fundamental. This, combined with our recent experimental results on three-colour waveform synthesis, proves that the theoretically considered multi-colour drivers for IAP generation can be realized with existing high-power laser technology. The high-energy driver pulses, combined with the strongly enhanced single-atom-level conversion efficiency we observe in our calculations, thus make multi-colour drivers prime candidates for the development of unprecedented high-energy IAP sources in the near future.

Attosecond nonlinear optics using gigawatt-scale isolated attosecond pulses.

Project description:High-energy isolated attosecond pulses required for the most intriguing nonlinear attosecond experiments as well as for attosecond-pump/attosecond-probe spectroscopy are still lacking at present. Here we propose and demonstrate a robust generation method of intense isolated attosecond pulses, which enable us to perform a nonlinear attosecond optics experiment. By combining a two-colour field synthesis and an energy-scaling method of high-order harmonic generation, the maximum pulse energy of the isolated attosecond pulse reaches as high as 1.3 μJ. The generated pulse with a duration of 500 as, as characterized by a nonlinear autocorrelation measurement, is the shortest and highest-energy pulse ever with the ability to induce nonlinear phenomena. The peak power of our tabletop light source reaches 2.6 GW, which even surpasses that of an extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser.

Attosecond soft X-ray high harmonic generation.

Project description:High harmonic generation (HHG) of an intense laser pulse is a highly nonlinear optical phenomenon that provides the only proven source of tabletop attosecond pulses, and it is the key technology in attosecond science. Recent developments in high-intensity infrared lasers have extended HHG beyond its traditional domain of the XUV spectral range (10-150?eV) into the soft X-ray regime (150?eV to 3?keV), allowing the compactness, stability and sub-femtosecond duration of HHG to be combined with the atomic site specificity and electronic/structural sensitivity of X-ray spectroscopy. HHG in the soft X-ray spectral region has significant differences from HHG in the XUV, which necessitate new approaches to generating and characterizing attosecond pulses. Here, we examine the challenges and opportunities of soft X-ray HHG, and we use simulations to examine the optimal generating conditions for the development of high-flux, attosecond-duration pulses in the soft X-ray spectral range. Amplification of elliptically polarized sub-femtosecond pulses in neon-like X-ray laser modulated by an IR field.

Project description:Amplification of attosecond pulses produced via high harmonic generation is a formidable problem since none of the amplifiers can support the corresponding PHz bandwidth. Producing the well defined polarization state common for a set of harmonics required for formation of the circularly/elliptically polarized attosecond pulses (which are on demand for dynamical imaging and coherent control of the spin flip processes) is another big challenge. In this work we show how both problems can be tackled simultaneously on the basis of the same platform, namely, the plasma-based X-ray amplifier whose resonant transition frequency is modulated by an infrared field.

Generation of elliptically polarized nitrogen ion laser fields using two-color femtosecond laser pulses.

Project description:We experimentally investigate generation of nitrogen molecular ion (N2+) lasers with two femtosecond laser pulses at different wavelengths. The first pulse serves as the pump which ionizes the nitrogen molecules and excites the molecular ions to excited electronic states. The second pulse serves as the probe which leads to stimulated emission from the excited molecular ions. We observe that changing the angle between the polarization directions of the two pulses gives rise to elliptically polarized N2+ laser fields, which is interpreted as a result of strong birefringence of the gain medium near the wavelengths of the N2+ laser.

Fully stabilized multi-TW optical waveform synthesizer: Toward gigawatt isolated attosecond pulses.

Project description:A stable 50-mJ three-channel optical waveform synthesizer is demonstrated and used to reproducibly generate a high-order harmonic supercontinuum in the soft x-ray region. This synthesizer is composed of pump pulses from a 10-Hz repetition-rate Ti:sapphire pump laser and signal and idler pulses from an infrared two-stage optical parametric amplifier driven by this pump laser. With full active stabilization of all relative time delays, relative phases, and the carrier-envelope phase, a shot-to-shot stable intense continuum harmonic spectrum is obtained around 60 eV with pulse energy above 0.24 μJ. The peak power of the soft x-ray continuum is evaluated to be beyond 1 GW with a 170-as transform limit duration. We found a characteristic delay dependence of the multicycle waveform synthesizer and established its control scheme. Compared with the one-color case, we experimentally observe an enhancement of the cutoff spectrum intensity by one to two orders of magnitude using three-color waveform synthesis.

Terawatt-scale optical half-cycle attosecond pulses.

Project description:Extreme-ultravoilet (XUV) attosecond pulses with durations of a few tens of attosecond have been successfully applied for exploring ultrafast electron dynamics at the atomic scale. But their weak intensities limit the further application in demonstrating nonlinear responses of inner-shell electrons. Optical attosecond pulses will provide sufficient photon flux to initiate strong-field processes. Here we proposed a novel method to generate an ultra-intense isolated optical attosecond pulse through relativistic multi-cycle laser pulse interacting with a designed gas-foil target. The underdense gas target sharpens the multi-cycle laser pulse, producing a dense layer of relativistic electrons with a thickness of a few hundred nanometers. When the dense electron layer passes through an oblique foil, it emits single ultra-intense half-cycle attosecond pulse in the visible and ultraviolet spectral range. The emitted pulse has a peak intensity exceeding 1018?W/cm2 and full-width-half-maximum duration of 200 as. The peak power of this attosecond light source reaches 2 terawatt. The proposed method relaxes the single-cycle requirement on the driving pulse for isolated attosecond pulse generation and significantly boosts the peak power, thus it may open up the route to new experiments tracking the nonlinear response of inner-shell electrons as well as nonlinear attosecond phenomena investigation.

Dramatic enhancement of supercontinuum generation in elliptically-polarized laser filaments.

Project description:Broadband laser sources based on supercontinuum generation in femtosecond laser filamentation have enabled applications from stand-off sensing and spectroscopy to the generation and self-compression of high-energy few-cycle pulses. Filamentation relies on the dynamic balance between self-focusing and plasma defocusing - mediated by the Kerr nonlinearity and multiphoton or tunnel ionization, respectively. The filament properties, including the supercontinuum generation, are therefore highly sensitive to the properties of both the laser source and the propagation medium. Here, we report the anomalous spectral broadening of the supercontinuum for filamentation in molecular gases, which is observed for specific elliptical polarization states of the input laser pulse. The resulting spectrum is accompanied by a modification of the supercontinuum polarization state and a lengthening of the filament plasma column. Our experimental results and accompanying simulations suggest that rotational dynamics of diatomic molecules play an essential role in filamentation-induced supercontinuum generation, which can be controlled with polarization ellipticity.
