Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Work-Family-School Role Conflicts Scale among nurses.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

To translate and validate the Chinese version of the Work-Family-School Role Conflicts Scale (WFSRCs-S) among nurses with multiple roles.

Methods

A sample of 233 registered nurses pursuing an advanced degree was recruited from 8 university hospitals in 5 cities in China from March to July 2016. The original scale of WFSRCs-S was translated into Chinese and revised to reflect cultural meaning, using standard translation methodology, and its reliability and validity were assessed.

Results

The content validity index of the 12-item WFSRCs-S-Chinese was 0.83, and the item level of content validity index ranged from 0.79 to 1.00. The exploratory factor analysis yielded a three-factor solution (work-school-to-family role conflict, family-school-to-work role conflict, and work-family-to-school role conflict) and explained 71.9% of the total variance for WFSRCs-S-Chinese. The Cronbach's α coefficients for the total scale and the three sub-scales were 0.87, 0.79, 0.78, and 0.87. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the measurement model was satisfied, and the test-retest reliability of WFSRCs-S-Chinese was 0.85. The WFSRCs-S-Chinese score was positively associated with burnout (r = 0.36, P < 0.001) and negatively related to role-related social support (r = -0.18, P = 0.046), thereby establishing concurrent validity.

Conclusion

The reliability and construct validity of the WFSRCs-S-Chinese suggest that this scale could be useful to assess inter-role conflicts among nurses with multiple roles in China.

Project description:ObjectiveTo adapt the Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (AEP) to the specific settings of health care in China and to validate the Chinese version AEP (C-AEP).MethodsForward and backward translations were carried out to the original criteria. Twenty experts participated in the consultancy to form a preliminary version of the C-AEP. To ensure applicability, tests of reliability and validity were performed on 350 admissions and 3,226 hospital days of acute myocardial infraction patients and total hip replacement patients in two tertiary hospitals by two C-AEP reviewers and two physician reviewers. Overall agreement, specific agreement, and Cohen's Kappa were calculated to compare the concordance of decisions between pairs of reviewers to test inter-rater reliability and convergent validity. The use of "overrides" and opinions of experts were recorded as measurements of content validity. Face validity was tested through collecting perspectives of nonprofessionals. Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values were also reported.ResultsThere are 14 admission and 24 days of care criteria in the initial version of C-AEP. Kappa coefficients indicate substantial agreement between reviewers: with regard to inter-rater reliability, Kappa (κ) coefficients are 0.746 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.644-0.834) and 0.743 (95% CI 0.698-0.767) of admission and hospital days, respectively; for convergent validity, the κ statistics are 0.678 (95% CI 0.567-0.778) and 0.691 (95% CI 0.644-0.717), respectively. Overrides account for less than 2% of all judgments. Content validity and face validity were confirmed by experts and nonprofessionals, respectively. According to the C-AEP reviewers, 18.3% of admissions and 28.5% of inpatient days were deemed inappropriate.ConclusionsThe C-AEP is a reliable and valid screening tool in China's tertiary hospitals. The prevalence of inappropriateness is substantial in our research. To reduce inappropriate utilization, further investigation is needed to elucidate the reasons and risk factors for this inappropriateness.

Project description:Mediterranean Diet management for people with cardiovascular disease (CVD) or CVD risk is supported by evidence. However, there is no valid Chinese language instrument for the measurement of adherence to this diet. The objective of this study was to generate a Chinese version of the Mediterranean Diet Scale (MDS-Chinese) and to validate a self-administered version with Chinese participants with CVD or CVD risk. The MDS-Chinese was created by translation and cultural adaptation and tested for psychometric properties. A panel of 10 experts in the field, who evaluated the MDS-Chinese content, showed that the content validity index ranged from 0.88 to 1.00. Sixteen native Chinese speakers with CVD or CVD risk evaluated the clarity of the MDS-Chinese, and the resulting instruction and items clarity scores ranged from 9.2 to 10.0. A total of 326 participants completed the MDS-Chinese and a Chinese version of the Coronary Artery Disease Education Questionnaire-Short Version (CADE-Q SV). Analysis indicated that the MDS-Chinese has 4 factors, and the Pearson's correlation between the MDS-Chinese and CADE-Q SV was 0.73. Fifty randomly selected participants completed the MDS-Chinese again with a 1-week interval to assess reliability. Internal consistency was acceptable (Cronbach's α was 0.62) and the inter-class correlation reliability coefficients (ICC) for each item ranged from 0.73 to 0.88. This study showed that the MDS-Chinese has acceptable reliability and validity for use among those in the Chinese population with CVD or CVD risk. Given that diet is one of the key secondary prevention strategies for management in cardiac rehabilitation, the MDS-Chinese instrument may be a useful and convenient tool for use with those in the Chinese population with CVD or with high risk of CVD, to monitor the level of Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence, information which is important for clinical practice. In addition, the establishment of the MDS-Chinese gives a fundamental tool for diet-related CVD research in the Chinese population. Moreover, employment of the MDS-Chinese in the Chinese community may improve awareness of the importance of a healthy diet in CVD prevention and management.
