ABSTRACT: Introduction
Workshops are commonly used in higher education, although faculty often have little or no training in how to develop and deliver this type of teaching methodology. This publication can be used to deliver a 1-hour active learning session to faculty utilizing experiential learning as a framework.Methods
An hour-long workshop on developing and implementing effective workshops was given to five cohorts of participants in the Academic Pediatric Association's Educational Scholars Program (ESP) between 2010 and 2018, following a 2008 pilot. After a brief didactic presentation, participants developed their own workshop plans. A unique reflection in action was utilized to model effective workshop facilitation techniques. Written surveys were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshop. Data from the ESP graduates were used to report the percentage of respondents who conducted their own workshop postgraduation.Results
A total of 116 faculty participated in this workshop over the course of 5 years. One hundred and fourteen participants stated they found the session to be useful. The role modeling/reflection by the facilitators and the opportunity to work with others on a workshop plan were described as the most valuable aspects. Approximately 70% of scholars who responded to postgraduation surveys had conducted at least one regional, national, or international workshop.Discussion
This faculty development session implements active and adult learning principles to model and teach participants how to develop and lead an effective workshop. It also provides a mechanism for collaboration among participants to develop a workshop based on shared interests.

Project description:IntroductionThe virtual learning environment has become increasingly important due to physical distance requirements put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The transition to a virtual format has been challenging for case-based teaching sessions, which involve substantial audience participation. We developed a faculty development workshop aimed at teaching health professions educators how to use various interactive virtual tools within videoconferencing platforms to facilitate virtual case-based sessions.MethodsTwo 90-minute workshops were piloted as a faculty development initiative. The facilitators demonstrated interactive teaching tools that could be used within virtual case-based sessions. Then, participants discussed how to incorporate these tools into case-based teaching sessions of different class sizes in small-group breakout sessions. Participants completed an online survey following each workshop to evaluate the sessions.ResultsA total of 18 and 26 subjects participated in the first and second workshops, respectively. Survey response rates were 100% (n = 18) and 65% (n = 17) for the first and second workshops, respectively. Both groups provided overall high ratings and reported that the workshop was clear, organized, and relevant. Participants were more familiar and comfortable with the use of various interactive tools for online teaching.DiscussionDistance online teaching will be increasingly required for an undetermined time. Faculty development efforts are crucial to facilitate effective interactive teaching sessions that engage learners and maximize learning. This virtual teaching workshop is a simple and straightforward way to introduce a more interactive format to virtual case-based teaching in the health professions.

Project description:IntroductionGiven the substantial variability in endoscopy teaching that gastroenterology fellows can be expected to encounter over the course of their fellowship, it is important to identify a standard set of behaviors that faculty can adopt to help trainees gain competence in endoscopy at an efficient rate. There remains a scarcity of easily distributed, effective tools for faculty development in regard to teaching endoscopy.MethodsBased on a prior qualitative study, we developed a three-part trigger video to be used for discussion during a faculty development session. We utilized three role-play scenarios between a fellow and supervisor managing a gastrointestinal bleed in the endoscopy suite. We summarized the implementation and instructions in a faculty guide. We used a postsession survey to measure effectiveness of the faculty development session.ResultsThis workshop has been successfully administered twice in 2018 with over 30 gastroenterologists and hepatologists involved in endoscopic teaching. Overall, all faculty have found the workshop useful in learning about endoscopic teaching behaviors and helpful in adjusting their own behaviors in endoscopic teaching.DiscussionWe developed a faculty development workshop specifically for teaching endoscopy to gastroenterology trainees that is widely generalizable to other programs. Overall, we found a high level of satisfaction amongst the participants who have completed it. The tools we created can be easily tailored to complement any existing faculty development session and extrapolated to similar procedural disciplines.

Project description:IntroductionHealth professions faculty members often struggle deciding on career paths balancing their identities as clinicians, educators, and scholars. Identity formation research has identified three major influences: context, roles, and agency. Identity influences career decisions and, in turn, affects engagement in medical education and faculty development. We designed a single-session workshop to foster educator identity formation.MethodsThe workshop varied from 1 to 3 hours. It explored how identity develops and considered how self, role, and context could be shaped to grow and sustain identity. Participants used a handout called Identity Quakes to indicate satisfaction with their support, engagement, and empowerment. The workshop employed direct instruction to provide language and tools to scaffold conversation and self-reflection leading to future plans aligning participants' professional identities and roles with resources to support further development.ResultsFrom 2016 to 2020, we offered the workshop to faculty members from diverse professions, including medicine, nursing, dentistry, physical therapy, and others, on 11 occasions (locally, nationally, and internationally) with audiences of 15-200 participants. At offerings that collected evaluations, the workshop received high ratings of 4.61-4.90 (very good-excellent) on a 5-point scale.DiscussionThis single-session workshop is a valuable opportunity to reflect on identity, which faculty members rarely get to do formally. The Identity Quakes handout prompts participants to challenge their assumptions about their professional identities and roles, employ their agency/choice, and consider future career choices.

Project description:IntroductionClinical reasoning is a complex cognitive process that involves multiple steps. Diagnosing and remediating clinical reasoning difficulties requires faculty to have an understanding of the cognitive theory behind clinical reasoning, familiarity with terminology, and a framework to identify different domains of struggle in their learners. Published resources on faculty development to diagnose and remediate clinical reasoning difficulties are limited. We created and implemented a workshop to assist faculty in developing these skills based on the five-domain framework described by Audétat, Laurin, and Sanche. This workshop provides all the materials needed to replicate this training with faculty at other institutions.MethodsThe workshop consists of a didactic component and case-based active learning in small groups. Each case focuses on different domains of clinical reasoning difficulties and targets different learner levels (preclinical medical students through residents). The workshop was given in multiple venues in 2016 and 2017.ResultsParticipants reported the session was valuable (4.71/5.0), the facilitators were effective (4.5/5.0), and the objectives were met (4.28/5.0). They highlighted the strengths of the interactive format, the framework to diagnose and remediate clinical reasoning difficulties, and the excellent take-home resources. They suggested more time for the workshop, revision of cases to better highlight difficulties, and refinement of instructions to approach the cases. These suggestions were incorporated into the current iteration of the workshop.DiscussionWe successfully implemented a workshop for diagnosing and remediating clinical reasoning difficulties in multiple venues. The sessions were diverse in terms of faculty participants and learner groups addressed.

Project description:IntroductionPrecepting is when a medical educator listens to a learner's presentation and must teach and assess the learner while rendering safe patient care. A popular framework for this type of educational encounter is the one-minute preceptor model, which can work for learners at all skill levels. This workshop was created to develop skills of all teaching faculty, regardless of medical specialty, in precepting.MethodsThe workshop is based on Kolb's experiential learning theory. A PowerPoint presentation delivers the core abstract concepts. The PowerPoint allows for discussion of participants' prior precepting experiences, including both challenges and successes. The workshop ends with role-plays for participants to practice their skills and a facilitated debrief to aid individual reflection. Twelve role-plays were created for use in the workshop; these were then reviewed by someone in the matching specialty to enhance authenticity. Participants completed a survey after the workshop to evaluate the session.ResultsThis presentation was delivered 26 times to 392 participants at 16 different teaching hospitals. Twenty-one different medical specialties and subspecialties were represented. Ninety-seven percent of participants stated they would use the information presented in the workshop often or daily. There were conflicting comments about the role-plays. The negative comments centered around (a) personal difficulty participating in the role-plays and (b) the role-plays not being related to the learning.DiscussionDiscussion and role-play can be an effective way to instruct educators in use of the one-minute preceptor as a framework for teaching.

Project description:Measuring outcomes of faculty development programs is difficult and infrequently attempted beyond measuring participant satisfaction with the program. Few studies have validated evaluation tools to assess the effectiveness of faculty development programs, and learners have rarely participated in assessing improvement of faculty who participate in such programs.To develop a questionnaire to measure the effectiveness of an enhanced 1-minute preceptor (OMP) faculty development workshop via faculty self-assessment and resident assessment of faculty, and to use the questionnaire to assess an OMP faculty development workshop.We developed and tested a questionnaire to assess the 5 "microskills" of a OMP faculty development program, and performed faculty self-assessment and resident assessment using the questionnaire 6 to 18 months before and 6 to 18 months after our experiential skills improvement workshop.Sixty-eight internal medicine continuity clinic preceptors (44 control and 24 intervention faculty) at a university, a veteran's affairs hospital, and 2 community internal medicine training sites.Twenty-two participants (92%) completed pre- and postintervention questionnaires. Residents completed 94 preintervention questionnaires and 58 postintervention questionnaires on participant faculty. Faculty reported improvement in behavior following the intervention. Residents reported no significant improvements in faculty teaching behaviors following the intervention.We attempted to rigorously evaluate a faculty development program based on the OMP. Although the intervention did not show statistically significant changes in teaching behavior, we believe that this study is an important step in extending assessment of faculty development to include resident evaluation of participating faculty.

Project description:IntroductionPreparation for oral board examination is an important part of residency training. Anesthesiology programs provide mock oral exams for their trainees, but often, faculty have little guidance on the conduct of these exams. We describe a faculty development workshop for anesthesiology faculty to enhance their familiarity with the American Board of Anesthesiology Standardized Oral Examination (SOE).MethodsWe created a faculty development workshop to administer to a live audience. The session consisted of didactic and practical components. A one-page tip sheet was also included to distribute to all faculty administering mock SOEs, for review and reference prior to administering an exam. Faculty and residents were surveyed before and after the session.ResultsEleven faculty participated in the live session. Eighty-two percent of faculty (nine of 11) committed to making a change in the way they delivered mock SOE as a result of attending the session. Fifty-eight percent of faculty (32 of 55) who responded to the postintervention survey reported that they used the tip sheet prior to administering a subsequent mock SOE. Residents described improvement in the clarity and organization of feedback following the intervention.DiscussionFaculty members play a vital role in preparing residents for board certification. It is therefore important that faculty are appropriately oriented to the goals and conduct of the mock SOE. After taking this workshop, faculty members will be more likely to adapt their examiner style to focus on the ABA-defined examinee attributes and to provide feedback after the mock SOE.

Project description:IntroductionGiven barriers to learner assessment in the authentic clinical environment, simulated patient encounters are gaining attention as a valuable opportunity for competency assessment across the health professions. Simulation-based assessments offer advantages over traditional methods by providing realistic clinical scenarios through which a range of technical, analytical, and communication skills can be demonstrated. However, simulation for the purpose of assessment represents a paradigm shift with unique challenges, including preservation of a safe learning environment, standardization across learners, and application of valid assessment tools. Our goal was to create an interactive workshop to equip educators with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct assessments in a simulated environment.MethodsParticipants engaged in a 90-minute workshop with large-group facilitated discussions and small-group activities for practical skill development. Facilitators guided attendees through a simulated grading exercise followed by in-depth analysis of three types of assessment tools. Participants designed a comprehensive simulation-based assessment encounter, including selection or creation of an assessment tool.ResultsWe have led two iterations of this workshop, including an in-person format at an international conference and a virtual format at our institution during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a total of 93 participants. Survey responses indicated strong overall ratings and impactfulness of the workshop.DiscussionOur workshop provides a practical, evidence-based framework to guide educators in the development of a simulation-based assessment program, including optimization of the environment, design of the simulated case, and utilization of meaningful, valid assessment tools.

Project description:INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Internists care for older adults and teach geriatrics to trainees, but they often feel ill-prepared for these tasks. The aims of our 1-day Continuing Medical Education workshop were to improve the knowledge and self-perceived competence of general internists in their care of older adults and to increase their geriatrics teaching for learners. SETTING: Two internal medicine training programs encompassing University, Veterans Affairs, and a community-based hospital in Portland, OR, USA. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Course faculty identified gaps in assessment of cognition, function, and decisional capacity; managing care transitions; and treatment of behavioral symptoms. To address these gaps, our workshop provided geriatric content discussions followed by small group role plays to apply newly learned content. Forty teaching faculty participated. PROGRAM EVALUATION: Participants completed 13-item multiple-choice pre- and post-workshop geriatric knowledge tests, pre- and post-workshop surveys of self-perceived competence to care for older adults, and completed an open-ended 'commitment to change' prompt after the intervention. Knowledge scores improved following the intervention (61% to 72%, p < .0001), as did self-perceived competence (11 of 14 items significant). Seventy-one percent of participants reported success in meeting their commitment to change goals. DISCUSSION: A 1-day intervention improved teaching faculty knowledge and self-perceived competence to care for older patients and led to self-perceived changes in teaching behaviors.

Project description:IntroductionDespite rising health care costs, trainees frequently do not receive formal high-value care (HVC) training. As medical education often occurs through informal learning, it is imperative that medical educators be prepared to teach HVC concepts across clinical settings.MethodsThis workshop was created to provide frameworks for teaching HVC across four pediatric educational settings: (1) case-based conferences, (2) inpatient rounding, (3) ambulatory visits, and (4) conversations with patients and families. Frameworks were developed based on literature review, content experts' knowledge, and internal assessment and feedback. The workshop was divided into two sections: a didactic overview of HVC education and interactive small-group sessions to practice application of the Toolkit for Teaching High-Value Care. At the end of the workshop, participants completed the Prescription for High-Value Care to create a personal action plan.ResultsThis workshop has been presented at both national and local pediatric conferences. From over 89 evaluations (83% response rate), participants felt the workshop met objectives, served as a valuable use of their time, and provided useful resources. Evaluations elicited specific actions that participants gleaned from workshop content along with proposed behavior changes, such as creating HVC case-based conferences at their home institution and initiating more value-based discussions.DiscussionThis workshop has been successfully presented in both national and local settings and has been well received by participants. The workshop is targeted for clinical educators and aims to address the gap in faculty development for HVC education.
