The nucleus is the target of autoantibodies in many diseases, which suggests intrinsic nuclear adjuvants that confer its high autoimmunogenicity. Nucleolin (NCL) is one abundant nucleolar autoantigen in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and, in lupus-prone mice, it elicits autoantibodies early.
