Project description:Ab initio MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations have been carried out in order to study the nature of P···Cl halogen bonding interaction between a phosphorus atom in an aromatic ring in para-substituted phosphabenzene (PPBZ) and ClF molecule. The interaction of PPBZ with ClF results in two different types of complexes: (i) complex formation through the chlorine-shared halogen bond (T1-X-PPBZ·ClF) and (ii) complex formation via halogen-π interaction (T2-X-PPBZ·ClF). T1-X-PPBZ·ClF complexes are found to be more stable than the T2-X-PPBZ·ClF complexes. This work also presents a general criterion to distinguish a chlorine-shared halogen bond from a traditional halogen bond and sheds light on the formation of the chlorine-shared halogen bond. The binding energy of T1-X-PPBZ·ClF complexes correlates well with the negative electrostatic potential of the P atom and PA value of the substituted PPBZ. The properties of both T1-X-PPBZ·ClF and T2-X-PPBZ·ClF complexes are analyzed using atom-in-molecule, natural bond orbital, and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory calculations. The variation of the Cl-F bond distances and the redshifts of the ν(ClF) vibration resulting from the interaction with PPBZs are discussed.

Project description:Despite several oxides with trivalent cobalt ions are known, the sesquioxide M2O3 with Co3+ ions remains elusive. Our attempts to prepare Co2O3 have failed. However, 50% of Co3+ ions could be substituted for Ln3+ ions in Ln2O3 (Ln = Y and Lu) with a cubic bixbyite structure where the Co3+ ions are in the intermediate-spin state. We have therefore examined the structural stability of Co2O3 and the special features of solid solutions (Ln0.5Co0.5)2O3 (Ln = Y and Lu). The experimental results are interpreted in the context of ab initio-based density functional theory, molecular dynamics (AIMD), and crystal orbital Hamiltonian population (COHP) analysis. Our AIMD study signifies that Co2O3 in a corundum structure is not stable. COHP analysis shows that there is instability in Co2O3 structures, whereas Co and O have a predominantly bonding character in the bixbyite structure of the solid solution (Y0.5Co0.5)2O3.

Project description:Monocytes are bone marrow-derived leukocytes that are part of the innate immune system. Monocytes are divided into three subsets: classical, intermediate and non-classical, which can be differentiated by their expression of some surface antigens, mainly CD14 and CD16. These cells are key players in the inflammation process underlying the mechanism of many diseases. Thus, the molecular characterization of these cells may provide very useful information for understanding their biology in health and disease. We performed a multicentric proteomic study with pure classical and non-classical populations derived from 12 healthy donors. The robust workflow used provided reproducible results among the five participating laboratories. Over 5000 proteins were identified, and about half of them were quantified using a spectral counting approach. The results represent the protein abundance catalogue of pure classical and enriched non-classical blood peripheral monocytes, and could serve as a reference dataset of the healthy population. The functional analysis of the differences between cell subsets supports the consensus roles assigned to human monocytes.

Project description:The hexagonal structure of LiBH4 at room temperature can be stabilised by substituting the BH4- anion with I-, leading to high Li-ion conductive materials. A thermodynamic description of the pseudo-binary LiBH4-LiI system is presented. The system has been explored investigating several compositions, synthetized by ball milling and subsequently annealed. X-ray diffraction and Differential Scanning Calorimetry have been exploited to determine structural and thermodynamic features of various samples. The monophasic zone of the hexagonal Li(BH4)1-x(I)x solid solution has been experimentally defined equal to 0.18 ≤ x ≤ 0.60 at 25 °C. In order to establish the formation of the hexagonal solid solution, the enthalpy of mixing was experimentally determined, converging to a value of 1800 ± 410 J mol-1. Additionally, the enthalpy of melting was acquired for samples that differ in molar fraction. By merging experimental results, literature data and ab initio theoretical calculations, the pseudo-binary LiBH4-LiI phase diagram has been assessed and evaluated across all compositions and temperature ranges by applying the CALPHAD method.

Project description:Qa-1 epitopes, the peptides that bind to non-classical major histocompatibility complex Ib Qa-1 molecules and are recognized by Qa-1-restricted CD8+ regulatory T (Treg) cells, have been identified in pathogenic autoimmune cells that attack myelin sheath in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE, an animal model for multiple sclerosis [MS]). Additionally, immunization with such epitopes ameliorates the EAE. However, identification of such epitopes requires knowledge of the pathogenic autoimmune cells which are largely unknown in MS patients. Hence, we asked whether the CD8+ Treg cells could directly target the myelin sheath to ameliorate EAE. To address this question, we analyzed Qa-1 epitopes in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG that is a protein in myelin sheath). Here, we report identification of a MOG-specific Qa-1 epitope. Immunization with this epitope suppressed ongoing EAE, which was abrogated by CD8+ T cell depletion. Additionally, the epitope immunization activated the epitope-specific CD8+ T cells which specifically accumulated in the CNS-draining cervical lymph nodes. Finally, CD8+ T cells primed by the epitope immunization transferred EAE suppression. Hence, this study reveals a novel regulatory mechanism mediated by the CD8+ Treg cells. We propose that immunization with myelin-specific HLA-E epitopes (human homologues of Qa-1 epitopes) is a promising therapy for MS.

Project description:NH3 is a valuable chemical with a wide range of applications, but the conventional Haber-Bosch process for industrial-scale NH3 production is highly energy-intensive with serious greenhouse gas emission. Electrochemical reduction offers an environmentally benign and sustainable route to convert N2 to NH3 at ambient conditions, but its efficiency depends greatly on identifying earth-abundant catalysts with high activity for the N2 reduction reaction. Here, it is reported that MnO particles act as a highly active catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of N2 to NH3 with excellent selectivity. In 0.1 m Na2SO4, this catalyst achieves a high Faradaic efficiency up to 8.02% and a NH3 yield of 1.11 × 10-10 mol s-1 cm-2 at -0.39 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, with great electrochemical and structural stability. On the basis of density functional theory calculations, MnO (200) surface has a smaller adsorption energy toward N than that of H with the *N2 → *N2H transformation being the potential-determining step in the nitrogen reduction reaction.

Project description:Nonradiative relaxation of high-energy excited states to the lowest excited state in chlorophylls marks the first step in the process of photosynthesis. We perform ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy measurements, that reveal this internal conversion dynamics to be slightly slower in chlorophyll B than in chlorophyll A. Modeling this process with non-adiabatic excited state molecular dynamics simulations uncovers a critical role played by the different side groups in the two molecules in governing the intramolecular redistribution of excited state wavefunction, leading, in turn, to different time-scales. Even given smaller electron-vibrational couplings compared to common organic conjugated chromophores, these molecules are able to efficiently dissipate about 1 eV of electronic energy into heat on the timescale of around 200 fs. This is achieved via selective participation of specific atomic groups and complex global migration of the wavefunction from the outer to inner ring, which may have important implications for biological light-harvesting function.

Project description:Precise and selective removal of silicon nitride (SiNx) over silicon oxide (SiOy) in a oxide/nitride stack is crucial for a current three dimensional NOT-AND type flash memory fabrication process. In this study, fast and selective isotropic etching of SiNx over SiOy has been investigated using a ClF3/H2 remote plasma in an inductively coupled plasma system. The SiNx etch rate over 80 nm/min with the etch selectivity (SiNx over SiOy) of ~ 130 was observed under a ClF3 remote plasma at a room temperature. Furthermore, the addition of H2 to the ClF3 resulted in an increase of etching selectivity over 200 while lowering the etch rate of both oxide and nitride due to the reduction of F radicals in the plasma. The time dependent-etch characteristics of ClF3, ClF3 & H2 remote plasma showed little loading effect during the etching of silicon nitride on oxide/nitride stack wafer with similar etch rate with that of blank nitride wafer.

Project description:A photochemical route to salts consisting of difluorooxychloronium(V) cations, [ClOF2 ]+ , and hexafluorido(non)metallate(V) anions, [MF6 ]- (M=V, Nb, Ta, Ru, Os, Ir, P, Sb) is presented. As starting materials, either metals, oxygen and ClF3 or oxides and ClF3 are used. The prepared compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The crystal structures of [ClOF2 ][MF6 ] (M=V, Ru, Os, Ir, P, Sb) are layer structures that are isotypic with the previously reported compound [ClOF2 ][AsF6 ], whereas for M=Nb and Ta, similar crystal structures with a different stacking variant of the layers are observed. Additionally, partial or full O/F disorder within the [ClOF2 ]+ cations of the Nb and Ta compounds occurs. In all compounds reported here, a trigonal pyramidal [ClOF2 ]+ cation with three additional Cl⋅⋅⋅F contacts to neighboring [MF6 ]- anions is observed, resulting in a pseudo-octahedral coordination sphere around the Cl atom. The Cl-F and Cl-O bond lengths of the [ClOF2 ]+ cations seem to correlate with the effective ionic radii of the MV ions. Quantum-chemical, solid-state calculations well reproduce the experimental Raman spectra and show, as do quantum-chemical gas phase calculations, that the secondary Cl⋅⋅⋅F interactions are ionic in nature. However, both solid-state and gas-phase quantum-chemical calculations fail to reproduce the increases in the Cl-O bond lengths with increasing effective ionic radius of M in [MF6 ]- and the Cl-O Raman shifts also do not generally follow this trend.

Project description:The chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)S2 has gained renewed interest in recent years due to the potential application in tandem solar cells. In this contribution, a combined theoretical and experimental approach is applied to investigate stable and metastable phases forming in CuInS2 (CIS) thin films. Ab initio calculations are performed to obtain formation energies, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and Raman spectra of CIS polytypes and related compounds. Multiple CIS structures with zinc-blende and wurtzite-derived lattices are identified and their XRD/Raman patterns are shown to contain overlapping features, which could lead to misidentification. Thin films with compositions from Cu-rich to Cu-poor are synthesized via a two-step approach based on sputtering from binary targets followed by high-temperature sulfurization. It is discovered that several CIS polymorphs are formed when growing the material with this approach. In the Cu-poor material, wurtzite CIS is observed for the first time in sputtered thin films along with chalcopyrite CIS and CuAu-ordered CIS. Once the wurtzite CIS phase has formed, it is difficult to convert into the stable chalcopyrite polymorph. CuIn5 S8 and NaInS2 accommodating In-excess are found alongside the CIS polymorphs. It is argued that the metastable polymorphs are stabilized by off-stoichiometry of the precursors, hence tight composition control is required.
