It used the non-random sampling method to obtain data from 586 students, consisting of 310 men and 276 women through questionnaires. The data were then descriptively analyzed using an academic procrastination scale, which was compiled and developed based on the Solomon & Rothblum (1984) theory. Project description:Academic procrastination is a multifaceted variable that encompasses different affective, cognitive, and behavioral factors, and has a high incidence in university students with important negative academic, personal, and social consequences. As such, this study aims to explain the levels of academic procrastination in relation to academic motivation and certain sociodemographic variables. The sample was composed of 117 students belonging to the University of Cuenca, Ecuador, they completed a questionnaire of sociodemographic variables, academic motivation scale and academic procrastination scale. Results showed high levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, as well as low levels of amotivation, together with a medium level of total academic motivation and academic procrastination in the participants. The logistic regression model with ordinal response evidenced a 19 % reduction in fit when considering the dimensions of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation, only intrinsic motivation was statistically significant in explaining academic procrastination, while total academic motivation and sociodemographic variables did not contribute significantly to the model. These findings confirm the importance of academic motivation, mainly intrinsic motivation, in the understanding of academic procrastination. The theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed, highlighting their relevance in explaining this phenomenon and benefiting students.

Project description:BackgroundProcrastination is common among university students and associated with adverse outcomes such as physical and mental health problems. According to the Temporal motivation theory procrastination may vary over time depending on the temporal proximity to goals and deadlines.AimsTo determine if mean procrastination levels among university students varies over an academic year, and if trajectories of procrastination are moderated by gender identity, perfectionistic strivings, and/or perfectionistic concerns.SampleSwedish university students (n = 1410).MethodsThe cohort was followed with web-surveys at four time-points over one academic year (Late semester, Mid semester, After semester, and Early semester). Generalized Estimating Equations were used to estimate mean levels of self-rated procrastination at the different time-points.ResultsWe found only small fluctuations in mean procrastination levels over the academic year. Participants with high perfectionistic concerns demonstrated higher mean procrastination levels at all time-points, but neither gender identity, perfectionistic concerns nor perfectionistic strivings affected the slope of the mean procrastination trajectories.ConclusionsIn this cohort of Swedish university students, self-rated procrastination levels were stable over the academic year. Perfectionistic concerns, but not gender identity or perfectionistic strivings, was associated with higher levels of procrastination.

Project description:The 21st-century problem of Internet addiction is increasing globally, but especially among university students. Not surprisingly, then, problematic Internet use is associated with university students' academic procrastination. Because studies are scarce in Mexico and Spain has one of the highest rates of Internet addiction in Europe, this paper (i) analyzed the presence and degree of Internet addiction among university students in Mexico and Spain, (ii) determined potential sociodemographic factors influencing Internet addiction, and (iii) established the type of correlation between Internet addiction and academic procrastination. The cross-sectional study design used an online questionnaire to measure problematic Internet use and academic procrastination through convenience sampling at one university in Mexico and one in Spain. The questionnaire contained three sections: participants' sociodemographic data, the Internet Addiction Test, and the Academic Procrastination Scale. The final sample comprised 758 university students, 387 from Mexico, and 371 from Spain, aged from 18 to 35 (M = 20.08, SD = 3.16). Results revealed similar prevalence rates of problematic and daily Internet use for leisure, potentially influencing Internet addiction in all three models (i.e., Mexico, Spain, and Total). Additionally, significant positive correlation was revealed between problematic Internet use and academic procrastination (p < .001). Finally, findings showed relevant data on Internet addiction's prevalence in Mexican and Spanish university contexts, along with its influential sociodemographic factors.

Project description:BackgroundHow to mobilize nurses students' learning initiative, reduce the incidence of academic procrastination, and improve their social adaptability is a key factor in lowering nursing brain drain and improving nursing quality.ObjectiveTo explore the mediating role of resilience in the correlation between social adaptability and academic procrastination of undergraduate nursing students.MethodsThis study is a cross-sectional survey. The researchers conducted an electronic questionnaire survey of 962 nursing undergraduates in Guanzhong District, Shaanxi Province from November 2022 to April 2023, and adopted the intention sampling method. And make the following assumptions: (1) There is a significant negative correlation between academic procrastination and social adaptability. (2) Academic procrastination can directly affect the social adaptability of undergraduate nursing students, and it has a significant negative predictive effect. (3) Resilience can directly affect academic procrastination and social adaptability. At the same time, resilience plays an intermediary role between the two. In this study, the Aitken procrastination scale, the resilience scale, and the social adaptability diagnostic scale were used to evaluate undergraduate nursing students. SPSS27.0 software is used to analyze the data statistically, and the Hayes PROCESS Macro method is used to test the model.ResultsThe study's findings are as follows: 1) Academic procrastination significantly and negatively impacts social adaptability (c = -0.292, t = -6.407, p < 0.001). 2) Even when accounting for resilience, academic procrastination still significantly predicts lower social adaptability (c'= -0.204, t = -4.338, p < 0.001). 3) The Bootstrap method test of percentile bias correction indicates that resilience serves as a significant mediator between academic procrastination and social adaptability. Bootstrap SE = 0.018, 95% CI = (-0.124, -0.055). The indirect effect contributes to 29.79% of the total effect.ConclusionResilience not only directly affects the academic procrastination and social adaptability of nursing students, but also partially intermediate the relationship between academic procrastination and social adaptability.

Project description:Background: In the face of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak, Chinese medical students worried about their future studies which might make them more susceptible to academic anxiety. Previous studies have shown that academic anxiety is an important risk factor for self-handicapping, but there are few studies to explore the relationship between the two which may be mediated or moderated by other variables. Therefore, this study investigated how Chinese medical students' academic anxiety is correlated to their self-handicapping in time of COVID-19 epidemic, and explored the moderating and mediating effects of hardiness and procrastination. Methods: In this study, 320 Chinese medical students' psychological traits were measured with Academic Anxiety Questionnaire, Self-Handicapping Scale, General Procrastination Scale and Hardiness Scale to explore the potential associations between these variables. Results: The most obvious finding to emerge from this study was that self- handicapping had a positive correlation with academic anxiety and procrastination, but had a negative correlation with hardiness; hardiness had a negative association with academic anxiety and procrastination; and academic anxiety and procrastination were positively correlated. In addition, the relationship between academic anxiety and self-handicapping of Chinese medical students was not only partially mediated by procrastination, but also moderated by hardiness. Furthermore, medical students who had lower hardiness had stronger direct effect, while the indirect effect was strong at high and low conditions of hardiness. Conclusion: In time of the COVID-19 epidemic, the academic anxiety and self-handicapping of medical students are influenced by procrastination and hardiness to a great extent. Thus, in addition to suggesting that more attention should be paid to the academic anxiety and procrastination of medical students, in the future, more attention should be paid to cultivating the hardiness of medical students and exerting its interventional role in self-handicapping.

Project description:BackgroundThe 5-year overall survival (OS) rate for colorectal cancer (CRC) has been reported as 39%, and the 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate has been reported as 14%. Various prognostic factors have been associated with differences in survival rates among CRC patients. This study investigated the difference between several prognostic factors and the OS and RFS rates of CRC patients at the Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital Makassar in Indonesia.Materials and methodsThe study group comprised all CRC patients treated at the Division of Digestive Surgery from 2014 to 2016. Prognostic factor data were collected from medical records for 293 patients. The OS and RFS rates were analyzed using the bivariate Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank tests.ResultsLog-rank analysis of the association of age, histopathology, stage, definitive surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy with the OS rate showed p-values of 0.031, 0.009, 0.014, 0.000, 0.343, and 0.381, respectively. Log-rank analysis of the association of these prognostic factors with the RFS rate showed p-values of 0.282, 0.006, 0.008, 0.020, 0.002, and 0.000, respectively.ConclusionThere were significant differences in the OS rate according to age, histopathology, stage, and history of definitive surgery. Histopathology, stage, history of definitive surgery, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy were significantly associated with differences in the RFS rate.

Project description:Termites are distributed throughout the world and often cause economic losses. This study aims to; (1) analyze the relationship between the distribution of termite species and the environmental conditions of Makassar city; (2) determine the level of attack in the Makassar City; and (3) map the risk of termite attack in the Makassar City. Samples of Pinus merkusii (2 × 2 × 20 cm) were placed at 13 observation stations and covered using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubes (4? in diameter, 25-cm in length). Samples remained in place for 6 months, at which point the presence of termite attacks as well as their intensity and frequency were analyzed. Three species of termites were found among the 13 stations: Schedorhinotermes sp., Coptotermes gestroi, and Microcerotermes serrula. Their presence was significantly influenced by environmental factors at each station. The study results showed a low rate of attack in several subdistricts of Bontoala, Biring Kanaya, Makassar, Mamajang, Mariso, Manggala, Panakukang, Rappocini, Tallo, Tamalanrea, Tamalate, Ujung Pandang, Ujung Tanah, and Wajo districts. A medium level of attacks was found in subdistricts within Biring Kanaya, Manggala, Mamajang, Panakukang, Rappocini, and Tallo Districts. Finally, a high risk of termite attacks was present in several subdistricts of Biringkanaya, Tamalantera, Rappocini, Manggala, and Tamalate districts.

Project description:Studies in recent years have shown that academic procrastination in postgraduates is very common and has a negative impact on their mental health. Therefore, we conducted this study to explore the influencing mechanism of postgraduate academic procrastination. In this study, based on the Temporal Decision Model (TDM) of procrastination and the strength model of self-control, we administered a questionnaire survey to 577 full-time postgraduates (351 females, 226 males) to explore the influence mechanisms and gender differences of motivational and volitional factors on academic procrastination. Our results indicated significant differences in academic self-efficacy between females and males. Academic self-efficacy was positively correlated with academic self-control and negatively correlated with academic procrastination; academic self-control was negatively correlated with academic procrastination. Academic self-control had a completely mediating effect in the influence of academic self-efficacy on academic procrastination. Gender variables moderated the influence of academic self-efficacy on academic self-control and thus significantly moderated the mediating effect of academic self-control. Specifically, academic self-control had a stronger mediating effect between academic self-efficacy and academic procrastination for female postgraduates. Our findings may provide guidance for postgraduates who exhibit academic procrastination and extend the theory of academic procrastination.

Project description:IntroductionThis study aimed to perform mutation and phylogenetic analyses of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Delta variants and analyze the characteristic signs and symptoms of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant originated from Makassar during the Delta outbreak.Methods: We collected samples from patients who were infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) between June and October 2021. We selected the Quantitative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-positive samples with a cycle threshold value of <30 for whole genome sequencing. Total viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) was isolated from 34 PCR-positive nasopharyngeal swab samples, and whole genome sequencing was performed using the Oxford Nanopore GridlON sequencer. Phylogenetic and maximum clade credibility analyses were performed using the Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method.ResultsIt was found that 33 patients were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant in this cohort study, among whom 63.6% (21) patients were female. According to the clinical data, 24 (72.7%), 7 (21.2%), and 2 (6.1%) patients had mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 infections. Phylogenetic analysis based on the spike and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) genes showed that the collected samples were clustered in the main lineage of B.1.617.2 (Delta variant). The Delta variants had a high frequency of distinct mutations in the spike protein region, including T19R (94.12%), L452R (88.23%), T478K (91.17%), D614G (97%), P681R (97%), and D950 N (97%). Other unique mutations found in a smaller frequency in our samples were present in the N-terminal domain, including A27T (2.94%) and A222V (14.70%), and in the receptor-binding domain, including Q414K (5.88%), G446V (2.94%), and T470 N (2.94%).ConclusionThis study revealed the unique mutations in the S protein region of Delta variants. T19R, L452R, T478K/T478R, D614G, P681R, and D950 N were the most common substitutions in Makassar's Delta variant.

Project description:BackgroundThis case study in Makassar City, Indonesia aims to investigate the clinicians' perceptions, including both satisfaction and barriers in using telemedicine in a large, established program which supported 3974 consultations in 2017.MethodsA mixed methodology was used in this research utilizing a questionnaire with 12 questions, and semi-structured interviews. A purposeful sample of clinicians using the telemedicine system at the 39 primary care clinics in Makassar City were surveyed. A total of 100 clinicians participated in this study. All of them completed the questionnaires (76.9% response rate) and 15 of them were interviewed.ResultsThe result showed that 78% of the clinicians were satisfied with the telemedicine system. In free text responses 69% said that telemedicine allowed quicker diagnosis and treatment, 47% said poor internet connectivity was a significant obstacle in using the system, and 40% suggested improvement to the infrastructure including internet connection and electricity.ConclusionOverall, the clinicians were satisfied with the system, with the main benefit of rendering the diagnosis faster and easier for patients. However, poor internet connectivity was indicated as the main barrier. Most of the clinicians suggested improving the infrastructure especially the internet network.
