Optical Fiber Delivered Ultrafast Plasmonic Optical Switch.

ABSTRACT: Ultrafast optical switch based on plasmonic nanostructures has large application potentials in optical logic circuits and optical communication systems. Integration of plasmonic optical switching devices with optical fibers is a breakthrough for realizing practical applications in long-range optical data transmission or communication techniques. Here, the incorporation of plasmonic optical switch devices onto the end facets of optical fibers is reported, so that the switched optical signals are generated by interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and plasmonic nanostructures on one end of the fiber, and are delivered via the fiber waveguide to the other end for detection or decoding. "Quenching" of localized surface plasmon in the gold nanowires by its interaction with band-edge modulation in gold through strong optical excitation is the responsible photophysics. This work accomplishes for the first time the implementation of ultrafast plasmonic optical switch device on optical fiber tips for logic data transmission.

A self-supported ultrathin plasmonic film for ultrafast optical switching.

Project description:Self-supporting gold nanowire (AuNW) gratings with a thickness of about 200 nm are produced by solution-processing and flexible-transfer techniques. Such an ultrathin structure is applied as an ultrafast optical switch that enables low-threshold optical modulation with a high signal contrast and a high signal-to-noise ratio. Transient energy-band modification in gold under excitation by femtosecond laser pulses is the main responsible mechanism. For a pump fluence of about 170 μJ cm-2, a modulation depth of about 10% is achieved for the optical switching signal. Self-supporting metallic plasmonic photonic thin films with a large area and flexible structures are important for applications in a large variety of circumstances and on different interfaces for optical signal processing, optical logic circuits, and optical communication systems.

Ultraminiature optical fiber-tip directly-printed plasmonic biosensors for label-free biodetection.

Project description:Miniaturization of biosensors has become an imperative demand because of its great potential in in vivo biomarker detection and disease diagnostics as well as the point-of-care testing for coping with public health crisis, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Here, we present an ultraminiature optical fiber-tip biosensor based on the plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) directly printed upon the end face of a standard multimode optical fiber at visible light range. An in-situ precision photoreduction technology is developed to additively print the micropatterns of size-controlled AuNPs. The AuNPs reveal distinct localized surface plasmon resonance, whose peak wavelength provides an ideal spectral signal for label-free biodetection. The fabricated optical fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor can not only detect antibody, but also test SARS-CoV-2 mimetic DNA sequence at the concentration level of 0.8 pM. Such an ultraminiature fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor offers a cost-effective biodetection technology for a myriad of applications ranging from point-of-care testing to in vivo diagnosis of stubborn diseases.

Ultrasmall all-optical plasmonic switch and its application to superresolution imaging.

Project description:Because of their exceptional local-field enhancement and ultrasmall mode volume, plasmonic components can integrate photonics and electronics at nanoscale, and active control of plasmons is the key. However, all-optical modulation of plasmonic response with nanometer mode volume and unity modulation depth is still lacking. Here we show that scattering from a plasmonic nanoparticle, whose volume is smaller than 0.001 μm(3), can be optically switched off with less than 100 μW power. Over 80% modulation depth is observed, and shows no degradation after repetitive switching. The spectral bandwidth approaches 100 nm. The underlying mechanism is suggested to be photothermal effects, and the effective single-particle nonlinearity reaches nearly 10(-9) m(2)/W, which is to our knowledge the largest record of metallic materials to date. As a novel application, the non-bleaching and unlimitedly switchable scattering is used to enhance optical resolution to λ/5 (λ/9 after deconvolution), with 100-fold less intensity requirement compared to similar superresolution techniques. Our work not only opens up a new field of ultrasmall all-optical control based on scattering from a single nanoparticle, but also facilitates superresolution imaging for long-term observation.

A novel plasmonic optical-fiber-based point-of-care test for periodontal MIP-1α detection.

Project description:The analysis of salivary biomarkers as expression of periodontal health conditions has been proposed as a useful aid to conventional diagnostic approaches. In this study, we present a point-of-care test (POCT) exploiting a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based optical biosensor to detect salivary macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, a promising marker of periodontitis. A plastic optical fiber (POF) was suitably modified and functionalized by an antibody self-assembled monolayer against MIP-1α for plasmonic detection. The proposed SPR-POF biosensor showed high selectivity and very low limit of detection for MIP-1α of 129 fM (1.0 pg/mL) in phosphate-buffered saline and 346 fM (2.7 pg/mL) in saliva. As a proof of concept, this POCT was also able to discriminate between a periodontitis patient and a healthy subject. The obtained results support the future application of this technology for an on-site detection and real-time monitoring of periodontal health conditions for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

SARS-CoV-2 spike protein detection through a plasmonic D-shaped plastic optical fiber aptasensor.

Project description:A specific aptameric sequence has been immobilized on short polyethyleneglycol (PEG) interface on gold nano-film deposited on a D-shaped plastic optical fiber (POFs) probe, and the protein binding has been monitored exploiting the very sensitive surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon. The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein has been specifically used to develop an aptasensor. Surface analysis techniques coupled to fluorescence microscopy and plasmonic analysis have been utilized to characterize the biointerface. Spanning a wide protein range (25 ÷ 1000 nM), the SARS-Cov-2 spike protein was detected with a Limit of Detection (LoD) of about 37 nM. Different interferents (BSA, AH1N1 hemagglutinin protein and MERS spike protein) have been tested confirming the specificity of our aptasensor. Finally, a preliminary test in diluted human serum encouraged its application in a point-of-care device, since POF-based aptasensor represent a potentially low-cost compact biosensor, characterized by a rapid response, a small size and could be an ideal laboratory portable diagnostic tool.

Calligraphed Selective Plasmonic Arrays on Paper Platforms for Complementary Dual Optical "ON/OFF Switch" Sensing.

Project description:Designing innovative (nano)detection platforms, respecting their low-cost and fabrication simplicity, capable to chemically detect multiple target analytes by employing the same engineered device, is still a great challenge in the multiplexed biosensor development. In this scientific context, in the current manuscript, we exploit the low-cost plasmonic calligraphy as a versatile approach to directly draw continuous plasmonic lines on Whatman paper using a regular ballpoint pen successively filled with two different anisotropic nanoparticles shapes (gold bipyramids-AuBPs and gold nanorods-AuNRs) as colloidal inks. After the efficient immobilization of the positively-charged AuBPs and AuNRs onto the paper fibres, proved by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) investigations, the specificity of our as-calligraphed-paper platform is ensured by coating the selected lines with a thin layer of anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) polyelectrolyte, creating, consequently, a well-defined plasmonic array of charge-selective regions. Finally, the functionality of the well-isolated and as-miniaturized active plasmonic array is, subsequently, tested using the anionic Rose-Bengal and cationic Rhodamine 6G target analytes and proved by complementary dual optical "ON/OFF Switch" sensing (i.e. Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering sensing/metal-enhanced fluorescence sensing) onto the same plasmonic line, developing thus a simple multiplexed plasmonic array platform, which could further facilitate the well-desired biomarker detection in complex mixtures.

Optimally Configured Optical Fiber Near-Field Enhanced Plasmonic Resonance Immunoprobe for the Detection of Alpha-Fetoprotein.

Project description:The detection of trace biomarkers is an important supplementary approach for early screening and diagnoses of tumors. An optical fiber near-field enhanced plasmonic resonance immunoprobe is developed for the detection of the hepatocellular carcinoma biomarker, i.e., the alpha-fetoprotein. Generic principles based on dispersion models and finite element analysis (FEA) models are developed to realize the optimized configuration of spectral characteristics of the immunoprobe. Dispersion models provide theoretical guidance for the design of the multilayer sensing structure from the perspective of the ray optics theory. FEA models provide theoretical guidance for the selection of coating materials from the perspective of the self-defined dielectric constant ratio, i.e., the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part. The optimized configuration of the antibody coupling further improves the biosensing performance of the immunoprobe. The limit of detection (LOD) can reach down to 0.01 ng mL-1 , which is one order of magnitude lower than those relevant reported works. Such a low LOD can more effectively avoid the accuracy degradation of detection results due to measurement errors. Human serum samples have also been detected, with the good precision achieved. This work shows promising prospects in applications of label-free, low-cost, rapid, and convenient early screening of tumors.

Ultrafast strong-field photoemission from plasmonic nanoparticles.

Project description:We demonstrate the ultrafast generation of electrons from tailored metallic nanoparticles and unravel the role of plasmonic field enhancement in this process by comparing resonant and off-resonant particles, as well as different particle geometries. We find that electrons become strongly accelerated within the evanescent fields of the plasmonic nanoparticles and escape along straight trajectories with orientations governed by the particle geometry. These results establish plasmonic nanoparticles as versatile ultrafast, nanoscopic sources of electrons.

Reprogrammable plasmonic topological insulators with ultrafast control.

Project description:Topological photonics has revolutionized our understanding of light propagation, providing a robust way to manipulate light. So far, most of studies in this field are focused on designing a static photonic structure. Developing a dynamic photonic topological platform to switch multiple topological functionalities at ultrafast speed is still a great challenge. Here we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a reprogrammable plasmonic topological insulator, where the topological propagation route can be dynamically changed at nanosecond-level switching time, leading to an experimental demonstration of ultrafast multi-channel optical analog-digital converter. Due to the innovative use of electric switches to implement the programmability of plasmonic topological insulator, each unit cell can be encoded by dynamically controlling its digital plasmonic states while keeping its geometry and material parameters unchanged. Our reprogrammable topological plasmonic platform is fabricated by the printed circuit board technology, making it much more compatible with integrated photoelectric systems. Furthermore, due to its flexible programmability, many photonic topological functionalities can be integrated into this versatile topological platform.

Ultrafast spontaneous emission source using plasmonic nanoantennas.

Project description:Typical emitters such as molecules, quantum dots and semiconductor quantum wells have slow spontaneous emission with lifetimes of 1-10 ns, creating a mismatch with high-speed nanoscale optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, single-photon sources and lasers. Here we experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast (<11 ps) yet efficient source of spontaneous emission, corresponding to an emission rate exceeding 90 GHz, using a hybrid structure of single plasmonic nanopatch antennas coupled to colloidal quantum dots. The antennas consist of silver nanocubes coupled to a gold film separated by a thin polymer spacer layer and colloidal core-shell quantum dots, a stable and technologically relevant emitter. We show an increase in the spontaneous emission rate of a factor of 880 and simultaneously a 2,300-fold enhancement in the total fluorescence intensity, which indicates a high radiative quantum efficiency of ∼50%. The nanopatch antenna geometry can be tuned from the visible to the near infrared, providing a promising approach for nanophotonics based on ultrafast spontaneous emission.
