We use high resolution satellite data on the proportion of buildings in a 250x250 meter cell to study the evolution of human settlement in Ghana over a 40 year period. We find a strong increase in built-up area over time, mostly concentrated in the vicinity of roads, and also directly on the coast. Project description:Protected areas (PAs) are a key strategy in global efforts to conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services that are critical for human well-being. Most PAs have some built-up structures within their boundaries or in surrounding areas, ranging from individual buildings to villages, towns and cities. These structures, and the associated human activities, can exert direct and indirect pressures on PAs. Here we present the first global analysis of current patterns and observed long-term trends in built-up areas within terrestrial PAs and their immediate surroundings. We calculate for each PA larger than 5 km2 and for its 10-km unprotected buffer zone the percentage of land area covered by built-up areas in 1975, 1990, 2000 and 2014. We find that globally built-up areas cover only 0.12% of PA extent and a much higher 2.71% of the unprotected buffers as of 2014, compared to 0.6% of all land (protected or unprotected). Built-up extent in and around PAs is highest in Europe and Asia, and lowest in Africa and Oceania. Built-up area percentage is higher in coastal and small PAs, and lower in older PAs and in PAs with stricter management categories. From 1975 to 2014, the increase in built-up area was 23 times larger in the 10-km unprotected buffers than within PAs. Our findings show that the development of built-up structures remains limited within the boundaries of PAs but highlight the need to carefully manage the considerable pressure that PAs face from their immediate surroundings.

Project description:Urban areas serve as critical habitats for numerous plant species. Existing studies suggest that, due to human-mediated introductions, urban environments often harbor a greater variety of plant species compared to suburban areas, potentially becoming focal points for biodiversity. Consequently, investigating the driving forces and complex mechanisms by which urban environmental factors influence plant species distribution is essential for establishing the theoretical foundation for urban biodiversity conservation and future urban planning and management. Solar radiation, among these factors, is a critical determinant of plant growth, development, and reproduction. However, there is a notable lack of research on how this factor affects the distribution of urban plant species and influences species' richness and composition within plant communities. We present for the first time an analysis of how solar radiation drives the spatial distribution of plant species within the built-up areas of Nanchang City, China. Based on three years of monitoring and survey data from experimental sites, this study employs three evaluation models-Species Richness Index (R), Simpson's Diversity Index (D), and Shannon-Wiener Index (H)-to analyze and validate the survey results. Additionally, MATLAB and ArcGIS Pro software are utilized for the numerical simulation and visualization of spatial data. Our study shows that areas with low solar radiation exhibit higher plant species richness, while plots with high plant diversity are primarily concentrated in regions with strong solar radiation. Moreover, the Diversity Index D proves to be more sensitive than the Shannon-Wiener Index (H) in evaluating the spatial distribution of plant species, making it a more suitable metric for studying urban plant diversity in our study area. Among the 18 plant species analyzed, Mulberry and Dandelion are predominantly dispersed by birds and wind, showing no significant correlation with solar radiation. This finding indicates that the spatial distribution of urban plant species is influenced by multiple interacting factors beyond solar radiation, highlighting the critical need for long-term observation, monitoring, and analysis. This study also suggests that shaded urban areas may serve as hubs of high species richness, while regions with relatively strong solar radiation can sustain greater plant diversity. These findings underscore the practical significance of this research, offering essential insights to guide urban planning and management strategies. Additionally, this study offers valuable insights for the future predictions of plant species distribution and potential areas of high plant diversity in various urban settings by integrating computational models, building data, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), and land cover data.

Project description:AimAbundances of animals vary according to species-specific habitat selection, but habitats are undergoing rapid change in response to anthropogenic alterations of land use and climate. The long-term decline of snowfall is one of the most dramatic abiotic changes in boreal regions, with potential to alter species communities and shape future ecosystems. However, the effects of snow cover on habitat-specific abundances remain unclear for many taxa. Here we explore whether long-term declines in snow cover affect the abundances of overwintering birds.TaxonFifty bird species.LocationFinland, Northern Europe.MethodsWe used generalized linear mixed models to analyse citizen-led monitoring data from 196 transects over a 32-year period to assess whether abundances of birds have changed in built-up areas, farmlands and forests, and whether these covary with warming temperatures and decreasing snow. We then explored if changes in abundance can be explained by body mass, migration strategy or feeding guilds of the species.ResultsOver the study period, the abundance of overwintering birds increased. This increase was most pronounced in farmlands (69.6%), where abundances were positively associated with decreasing snow depth. On the other hand, while abundances in built-up habitats (19.5%) decreased over the study period, they increased in periods of high snow depths. Finally, we found that the short-distance migration strategy explains changes in bird abundances with snow. In farmlands, ground feeding birds and heavier birds also show a positive trends in abundance with decreasing snow depths.Main conclusionsLocal snow conditions are driving habitat selection of birds in the winter; birds in farmlands were most responsive to a decrease in snow depth. Changing snow depths can affect bird movements across habitats in the winter, but also influence migratory patterns and range shifts of species.

Project description:Mastering the evolution of urban land cover is important for urban management and planning. In this paper, a method for analyzing land cover evolution within urban built-up areas based on nighttime light data and Landsat data is proposed. The method solves the problem of inaccurate descriptions of urban built-up area boundaries from the use of single-source diurnal or nocturnal remote sensing data and was able to achieve an effective analysis of land cover evolution within built-up areas. Four main procedures are involved: (1) The neighborhood extremum method and maximum likelihood method are used to extract nighttime light data and the urban built-up area boundaries from the Landsat data, respectively; (2) multisource urban boundaries are obtained using boundary pixel fusion of the nighttime light data and Landsat urban built-up area boundaries; (3) the maximum likelihood method is used to classify Landsat data within multisource urban boundaries into land cover classes, such as impervious surface, vegetation and water, and to calculate landscape indexes, such as overall landscape trends, degree of fragmentation and degree of aggregation; (4) the changes in the multisource urban boundaries and landscape indexes were obtained using the abovementioned methods, which were supported by multitemporal nighttime light data and Landsat data, to model the urban land cover evolution. Using the cities of Shenyang, Changchun and Harbin in northeastern China as experimental areas, the multitemporal landscape index showed that the integration and aggregation of land cover in the urban areas had an increasing trend, the natural environment of Shenyang and Harbin was improving, while Changchun laid more emphasis on the construction of artificial facilities. At the same time, the method proposed in this paper to extract built-up areas from multi-source city data showed that the user accuracy, production accuracy, overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient are at least 3%, 1%, 1% and 0.04 higher than the single-source data method.

Project description:Various approaches have been proposed to address the delineation of built-up areas for a wide range of applications. Recently developed approaches are based on the increasing availability of road network data. However, most approaches have employed one or more parameters to divide built-up from non-built-up areas. Very few studies have discussed how to determine appropriate thresholds for such parameters. This study employed an empirical approach for threshold determination, and validated that the approach is applicable for the delineation of built-up areas using road network data. A series of experiments were designed to investigate the most-appropriate thresholds (determined using a similarity measure) for multiple parameters of three existing approaches (street blocks, grid-based, and kernel density) with regard to different administrative regions and cities/towns. The results show that in most cases, the most-appropriate thresholds or ranges for different subdivisions are either identical or overlap-thus validating the use of the most-appropriate thresholds to delineate built-up areas for one or multiple small subdivisions and, by inference, for a much larger region.

Project description:Rapid urbanization, while transforming people's living environments, also brings a series of urban issues such as the urban heat island effect. The urban park is an effective means to alleviate the urban heat island effect in summer. How to make better use of the cold island effect formed by urban parks to improve the urban outdoor thermal environment is an important topic. This manuscript takes Xi'an as the research area, using remote sensing data as the data source and combining field surveys, to explore the cooling characteristics of the cold island effect in the urban built-up area. It is demonstrated that, the influencing factors of the cooling effect of urban park cold islands are summarized: the area and perimeter of the park, the area and perimeter of water bodies, and the area of trees are all positively correlated with the cooling effect. The surrounding building density and building plot ratio are also positively correlated with the cooling effect of the green space. A comprehensive scoring model for each influencing factor is established, and the principal component analysis method is used to determine the weight of each indicator on the cooling effect of park design elements, among which the area of green space parks has the greatest influence weight. The demand space for cold islands in Xi'an's parks is analyzed, and optimization strategies and suggestions for improving the urban thermal environment are put forward from both inside and outside the park.

Project description:It is common knowledge that the level of landscape heterogeneity may affect the performance of remote sensing based land use / land cover classification. While this issue has been studied in depth for land cover data in general, the specific relationship between the mapping accuracy and morphological characteristics of built-up surfaces has not been analyzed in detail, an urgent need given the recent emergence of a variety of global, fine-resolution settlement datasets. Moreover, previous studies typically rely on aggregated, broad-scale landscape metrics to quantify the morphology of built-up areas, neglecting the fine-grained spatial variation and scale dependency of such metrics. Herein, we aim to fill this knowledge gap by assessing the associations between localized (focal) landscape metrics, derived from binary built-up surfaces and localized data accuracy estimates. We tested our approach for built-up surfaces from the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) for Massachusetts (USA). Specifically, we examined the explanatory power of landscape metrics with respect to both commission and omission errors in the multi-temporal GHS-BUILT R2018A data product. We found that the Landscape Shape Index (LSI) calculated in focal windows exhibits, on average, the highest levels of correlation to focal accuracy measures. These relationships are scale-dependent, and become stronger with increasing level of spatial support. We found that thematic omission error, as measured by Recall, has the strongest relationship to measures of built-up surface morphology across different temporal epochs and spatial resolutions. The results of our regression analysis (R2>0.9), estimating accuracy based on landscape metrics, confirmed these findings. Lastly, we tested the generalizability of our findings by regionally stratifying our regression models and applying them to a different version of the GHSL (i.e., the GHS-BUILT-S2) and a different study area. We observed varying levels of model transferability, indicating that the relationship between accuracy and landscape metrics may be sensor-specific, and is heavily localized for most accuracy metrics, but quite generalizable for the Recall measure. This indicates that there is a strong and generalizable association between morphological properties of built-up land and the degree to which it is "undermapped".

Project description:The estimation of the vertical components of built-up areas from free Digital Elevation Model (DEM) global data filtered by multi-scale convolutional, morphological and textural transforms are generalized at the spatial resolution of 250 meters using linear least-squares regression techniques. Six test cases were selected: Hong Kong, London, New York, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, and Toronto. Five global DEM and two DEM composites are evaluated in terms of 60 combinations of linear, morphological and textural filtering and different generalization techniques. Four generalized vertical components estimates of built-up areas are introduced: the Average Gross Building Height (AGBH), the Average Net Building Height (ANBH), the Standard Deviation of Gross Building Height (SGBH), and the Standard Deviation of Net Building Height (SNBH). The study shows that the best estimation of the net GVC of built-up areas given by the ANBH and SNBH, always contains a greater error than their corresponding gross GVC estimation given by the AGBH and SGBH, both in terms of mean and standard deviation. Among the sources evaluated in this study, the best DEM source for estimating the GVC of built-up areas with univariate linear regression techniques is a composite of the 1-arcsec Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM30) and the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) World 3D-30 m (AW3D30) using the union operator (CMP_SRTM30-AW3D30_U). A multivariate linear model was developed using 16 satellite features extracted from the CMP_SRTM30-AW3D30_U enriched by other land cover sources, to estimate the gross GVC. A RMSE of 2.40 m and 3.25 m was obtained for the AGBH and the SGBH, respectively. A similar multivariate linear model was developed to estimate the net GVC. A RMSE of 6.63 m and 4.38 m was obtained for the ANBH and the SNBH, respectively. The main limiting factors on the use of the available global DEMs for estimating the GVC of built-up areas are two. First, the horizontal resolution of these sources (circa 30 and 90 meters) corresponds to a sampling size that is larger than the expected average horizontal size of built-up structures as detected from nadir-angle Earth Observation (EO) data, producing more reliable estimates for gross vertical components than for net vertical component of built-up areas. Second, post-production processing targeting Digital Terrain Model specifications may purposely filter out the information on the vertical component of built-up areas that are contained in the global DEMs. Under the limitations of the study presented here, these results show a potential for using global DEM sources in order to derive statistically generalized parameters describing the vertical characteristics of built-up areas, at the scale of 250x250 meters. However, estimates need to be evaluated in terms of the specific requirements of target applications such as spatial population modelling, urban morphology, climate studies and so on.

Project description:Time-series datasets of Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Built Index (NDBI) and other climatic factors are of significance due to their application in tracking climate change in cities. In this paper, new data processing methods are presented using the application of Google Earth Engine (GEE) and GIS. Different variables including LST (both daytime and nighttime), NDVI, NDBI, rainfall, wind speed, evapotranspiration, and surface soil moisture were computed for 18 years from 2000 to 2018 with of use of GEE platform. The study areas cover 20 top global cities which were mentioned in the global cities index report in 2018 [1]. The data sources used on GEE are: MODIS Terra LST and Emissivity 8-Day Global 1km; MODIS Terra Vegetation Indices 16-Day Global 1km; MODIS Terra Surface Reflectance 8-Day Global 500 m; TRMM Monthly Precipitation Estimate data; Terra Monthly Climate; MODIS Terra Net Evapotranspiration 8-Day Global 500 m; and NASA-USDA SMAP Global Soil Moisture Data. Also, to gather information regarding the global cities, United Nations (UN) population dataset, cities elevation and the A.T.Kerney report [1] was used. A short description of GEE functions to retrieve variables is provided. The dataset can be used to investigate the spatial-temporal relationships between LST, vegetation and built-up areas, as well as to provide the global perspective of climate and population change in various cities around the world.

Project description:BackgroundWalking and bicycling are health-promoting and environmentally friendly alternatives to the automobile. Previous studies that explore correlates of active travel and the built environment are for a single metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and results often vary among MSAs.ObjectivesOur goal was to model the relationship between the built environment and active travel for 20 MSAs spanning the continental United States.MethodsWe sourced and processed pedestrian and bicycle traffic counts for 20 U.S. MSAs (n=4,593 count locations), with 1–17 y of data available for each count location and the earliest and latest years of data collection being 1999 and 2016, respectively. Then, we tabulated land use, transport, and sociodemographic variables at 12 buffer sizes (100–3,000 m) for each count location. We employed stepwise linear regression to develop predictive models for morning and afternoon peak-period bicycle and pedestrian traffic volumes.ResultsBuilt environment features were significant predictors of active travel across all models. Areas with easy access to water and green space, high concentration of jobs, and high rates of active commuting were associated with higher bicycle and pedestrian volumes. Bicycle facilities (e.g., bike lanes, shared lane markings, off-street trails) were correlated with higher bicycle volumes. All models demonstrated reasonable goodness-of-fit for both bicyclists (adj-R2: 0.46–0.61) and pedestrians (adj-R2: 0.42–0.72). Cross-validation results showed that the afternoon peak-period models were more reliable than morning models.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first study to model multi-city trends in bicycling and walking traffic volumes with the goal of developing generalized estimates of the impact of the built environment on active travel. Our models could be used for exposure assessment (e.g., crashes, air pollution) to inform design of health-promoting cities. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP3389.
