Quantum loop states in spin-orbital models on the honeycomb lattice.

ABSTRACT: The search for truly quantum phases of matter is a center piece of modern research in condensed matter physics. Quantum spin liquids, which host large amounts of entanglement-an entirely quantum feature where one part of a system cannot be measured without modifying the rest-are exemplars of such phases. Here, we devise a realistic model which relies upon the well-known Haldane chain phase, i.e. the phase of spin-1 chains which host fractional excitations at their ends, akin to the hallmark excitations of quantum spin liquids. We tune our model to exactly soluble points, and find that the ground state realizes Haldane chains whose physical supports fluctuate, realizing both quantum spin liquid like and symmetry-protected topological phases. Crucially, this model is expected to describe actual materials, and we provide a detailed set of material-specific constraints which may be readily used for an experimental realization.

Randomness-induced quantum spin liquid on honeycomb lattice.

Project description:Quantum entanglement in magnetic materials is expected to yield a quantum spin liquid (QSL), in which strong quantum fluctuations prevent magnetic ordering even at zero temperature. This topic has been one of the primary focuses of condensed-matter science since Anderson first proposed the resonating valence bond state in a certain spin-1/2 frustrated magnet in 1973. Since then, several candidate materials featuring frustration, such as triangular and kagome lattices, have been reported to exhibit liquid-like behavior. However, the mechanisms that stabilize the liquid-like states have remained elusive. Here, we present a QSL state in a spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice with randomness in the exchange interaction. That is, we successfully introduce randomness into the organic radial-based complex and realize a random-singlet (RS) state (or valence bond glass). All magnetic and thermodynamic experimental results indicate the liquid-like behaviors, which are consistent with those expected in the RS state. Our results suggest that the randomness or inhomogeneity in the actual systems stabilize the RS state and yield liquid-like behavior.

Candidate quantum spin liquid due to dimensional reduction of a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice.

Project description:As with quantum spin liquids based on two-dimensional triangular and kagome lattices, the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with either a strong spin-orbital coupling or a frustrating second-nearest-neighbor coupling is expected to be a source of candidate quantum spin liquids. An ammonium salt [(C3H7)3NH]2[Cu2(C2O4)3](H2O)2.2 containing hexagonal layers of Cu(2+) was obtained from solution. No structural transition or long-range magnetic ordering was observed from 290 K to 2 K from single crystal X-ray diffraction, specific heat and susceptibility measurements. The anionic layers are separated by sheets of ammonium and H2O with distance of 3.5 Å and no significant interaction between anionic layers. The two-dimensional honeycomb lattice is constructed from Jahn-Teller distorted Cu(2+) and oxalate anions, showing a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between S = 1/2 metal atoms with θ = -120 (1) K. Orbital analysis of the Cu(2+) interactions through the oxalate-bridges suggests a stripe mode pattern of coupling with weak ferromagnetic interaction along the b axis, and strong antiferromagnetic interaction along the a axis. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility shows that it is dominated by a quasi-one-dimensional contribution with spin chains that are at least as well isolated as those of well-known quasi-one-dimensional spin liquids.

Spin-lattice decoupling in a triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid.

Project description:A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic state of matter in condensed-matter systems, where the electron spins are strongly correlated, but conventional magnetic orders are suppressed down to zero temperature because of strong quantum fluctuations. One of the most prominent features of a QSL is the presence of fractionalized spin excitations, called spinons. Despite extensive studies, the nature of the spinons is still highly controversial. Here we report magnetocaloric-effect measurements on an organic spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, showing that electron spins are decoupled from a lattice in a QSL state. The decoupling phenomena support the gapless nature of spin excitations. We further find that as a magnetic field is applied away from a quantum critical point, the number of spin states that interact with lattice vibrations is strongly reduced, leading to weak spin-lattice coupling. The results are compared with a model of a strongly correlated QSL near a quantum critical point.

Topological states in multi-orbital HgTe honeycomb lattices.

Project description:Research on graphene has revealed remarkable phenomena arising in the honeycomb lattice. However, the quantum spin Hall effect predicted at the K point could not be observed in graphene and other honeycomb structures of light elements due to an insufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we show theoretically that 2D honeycomb lattices of HgTe can combine the effects of the honeycomb geometry and strong spin-orbit coupling. The conduction bands, experimentally accessible via doping, can be described by a tight-binding lattice model as in graphene, but including multi-orbital degrees of freedom and spin-orbit coupling. This results in very large topological gaps (up to 35?meV) and a flattened band detached from the others. Owing to this flat band and the sizable Coulomb interaction, honeycomb structures of HgTe constitute a promising platform for the observation of a fractional Chern insulator or a fractional quantum spin Hall phase.

p Orbital Flat Band and Dirac Cone in the Electronic Honeycomb Lattice.

Project description:Theory anticipates that the in-plane px, py orbitals in a honeycomb lattice lead to potentially useful quantum electronic phases. So far, p orbital bands were only realized for cold atoms in optical lattices and for light and exciton-polaritons in photonic crystals. For electrons, in-plane p orbital physics is difficult to access since natural electronic honeycomb lattices, such as graphene and silicene, show strong s-p hybridization. Here, we report on electronic honeycomb lattices prepared on a Cu(111) surface in a scanning tunneling microscope that, by design, show (nearly) pure orbital bands, including the p orbital flat band and Dirac cone.

Quantum Disordered State of Magnetic Charges in Nanoengineered Honeycomb Lattice.

Project description:A quantum magnetic state due to magnetic charges is never observed, even though they are treated as quantum mechanical variables in theoretical calculations. Here, the occurrence of a novel quantum disordered state of magnetic charges in a nanoengineered magnetic honeycomb lattice of ultra-small connecting elements is demonstrated. The experimental research, performed using spin resolved neutron scattering, reveals a massively degenerate ground state, comprised of low integer and energetically forbidden high integer magnetic charges, that manifests cooperative paramagnetism at low temperature. The system tends to preserve the degenerate configuration even under large magnetic field application. It exemplifies the robustness of disordered correlation of magnetic charges in a 2D honeycomb lattice. The realization of quantum disordered ground state elucidates the dominance of exchange energy, which is enabled due to the nanoscopic magnetic element size in nanoengineered honeycomb. Consequently, an archetypal platform is envisaged to study quantum mechanical phenomena due to emergent magnetic charges.

Learning spin liquids on a honeycomb lattice with artificial neural networks.

Project description:Machine learning methods provide a new perspective on the study of many-body system in condensed matter physics and there is only limited understanding of their representational properties and limitations in quantum spin liquid systems. In this work, we investigate the ability of the machine learning method based on the restricted Boltzmann machine in capturing physical quantities including the ground-state energy, spin-structure factor, magnetization, quantum coherence, and multipartite entanglement in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic spin liquids on a honeycomb lattice. It is found that the restricted Boltzmann machine can encode the many-body wavefunction quite well by reproducing accurate ground-state energy and structure factor. Further investigation on the behavior of multipartite entanglement indicates that the residual entanglement is richer in the gapless phase than the gapped spin-liquid phase, which suggests that the residual entanglement can characterize the spin-liquid phases. Additionally, we confirm the existence of a gapped non-Abelian topological phase in the spin liquids on a honeycomb lattice with a small magnetic field and determine the corresponding phase boundary by recognizing the rapid change of the local magnetization and residual entanglement.

Quantum correlations in the frustrated XY model on the honeycomb lattice.

Project description:We have investigated the spin-1/2 XY frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg honeycomb model, which features an intermediate region in its ground state phase diagram that is not well understood. The two dominant phases in the diagram are the quantum spin-liquid (QSL) and the antiferromagnetic Ising order. Quantum correlations suggest that the QSL phase is likely to exhibit entanglement. To explore this possibility, we utilized numerical Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods to calculate concurrence, quantum discord (QD), and entanglement entropy. The results of our study indicate the existence of quantum entanglement within the intermediate region, implying a greater probability for the dominance of the quantum spin-liquid (QSL) phase over the antiferromagnetic Ising order. This discovery underscores the importance of considering quantum correlations in comprehending the model's behavior and provides insight into the complex nature of quantum systems.

A p-orbital honeycomb-Kagome lattice realized in a two-dimensional metal-organic framework.

Project description:The experimental realization of p-orbital systems is desirable because p-orbital lattices have been proposed theoretically to host strongly correlated electrons that exhibit exotic quantum phases. Here, we synthesize a two-dimensional Fe-coordinated bimolecular metal-organic framework which constitutes a honeycomb lattice of 1,4,5,8,9,12-hexaazatriphenylene molecules and a Kagome lattice of 5,15-di(4-pyridyl)-10,20-diphenylporphyrin molecules on a Au(111) substrate. Density-functional theory calculations show that the framework features multiple well-separated spin-polarized Kagome bands, namely Dirac cone bands and Chern flat bands, near the Fermi level. Using tight-binding modelling, we reveal that these bands are originated from two effects: the low-lying molecular orbitals that exhibit p-orbital characteristics and the honeycomb-Kagome lattice. This study demonstrates that p-orbital Kagome bands can be realized in metal-organic frameworks by using molecules with molecular orbitals of p-orbital like symmetry.

Penetration depth and nonlocal manipulation of quantum spin hall edge states in chiral honeycomb nanoribbons.

Project description:We have studied numerically the penetration depth of quantum spin hall edge states in chiral honeycomb nanoribbons based on the Green's function method. The changing of edge orientation from armchair to zigzag direction decreases the penetration depth drastically. The penetration depth is used to estimate the gap opened for the finite-size effect. Beside this, we also proposed a nonlocal transistor based on the zigzag-like chiral ribbons in which the current is carried at one edge and the manipulation is by the edge magnetization at the other edge. The difficulty that the edge magnetization is unstable in the presence of a ballistic current can be removed by this nonlocal manipulation.
