Interface interaction of transition metal phthalocyanines with strontium titanate (100).

ABSTRACT: We study interface properties of CoPcF _x and FePcF_x (x = 0 or 16) on niobium-doped SrTiO₃(100) surfaces using mainly X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. For all studied molecules, a rather complex, bidirectional charge transfer with the oxide substrate was observed, involving both the macrocycle and the central metal atom. For molecules of the first monolayer, an electron transfer to the central metal atom is concluded from transition metal 2p core level photoemission spectra. The number of interacting molecules in the first monolayer on the oxide surface depends on the central metal atom of the phthalocyanine, whereas the substrate preparation has minor influence on the interaction between CoPc and SrTiO₃(100). Differences of the interaction mechanism to related TiO₂ surfaces are discussed.

Study on Ca Segregation toward an Epitaxial Interface between Bismuth Ferrite and Strontium Titanate.

Project description:Segregation is a crucial phenomenon, which has to be considered in functional material design. Segregation processes in perovskite oxides have been the subject of ongoing scientific interest, since they can lead to a modification of properties and a loss of functionality. Many studies in oxide thin films have focused on segregation toward the surface using a variety of surface-sensitive analysis techniques. In contrast, here we report a Ca segregation toward an in-plane compressively strained heterostructure interface in a Ca- and Mn-codoped bismuth ferrite film. We are using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Ca segregation is found to trigger atomic and electronic structure changes at the interface. This includes the reduction of the interface strain according to the Ca concentration gradient, interplanar spacing variations, and oxygen vacancies at the interface. The experimental results are supported by DFT calculations, which explore two segregation scenarios, i.e., one without oxygen vacancies and Fe oxidation from 3+ to 4+ and one with vacancies for charge compensation. Comparison with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements confirms the second segregation scenario with vacancy formation. The findings contribute to the understanding of segregation and indicate promising effects of a Ca-rich buffer layer in this heterostructure system.

Transition from Reconstruction toward Thin Film on the (110) Surface of Strontium Titanate.

Project description:The surfaces of metal oxides often are reconstructed with a geometry and composition that is considerably different from a simple termination of the bulk. Such structures can also be viewed as ultrathin films, epitaxed on a substrate. Here, the reconstructions of the SrTiO3 (110) surface are studied combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), transmission electron diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and analyzed with density functional theory calculations. Whereas SrTiO3 (110) invariably terminates with an overlayer of titania, with increasing density its structure switches from n × 1 to 2 × n. At the same time the coordination of the Ti atoms changes from a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra to a double layer of edge-shared octahedra with bridging units of octahedrally coordinated strontium. This transition from the n × 1 to 2 × n reconstructions is a transition from a pseudomorphically stabilized tetrahedral network toward an octahedral titania thin film with stress-relief from octahedral strontia units at the surface.

How heteroepitaxy occurs on strontium titanate.

Project description:In traditional models of heteroepitaxy, the substrate serves mainly as a crystalline template for the thin-film lattice, dictating the initial roughness of the film and the degree of coherent strain. Here, performing in situ surface x-ray diffraction during the heteroepitaxial growth of LaTiO3 on SrTiO3 (001), we find that a TiO2 adlayer composed of the ( 13 × 13 ) R33.7° and ( 2 × 2 ) R45.0° reconstructions is a highly active participant in the growth process, continually diffusing to the surface throughout deposition. The effects of the TiO2 adlayer on layer-by-layer growth are investigated using different deposition sequences and anomalous x-ray scattering, both of which permit detailed insight into the dynamic layer rearrangements that take place. Our work challenges commonly held assumptions regarding growth on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 (001) and demonstrates the critical role of excess TiO2 surface stoichiometry on the initial stages of heteroepitaxial growth on this important perovskite oxide substrate material.

Tuning the Magnetism in Boron-Doped Strontium Titanate.

Project description:The magnetic and electronic properties of boron-doped SrTiO3 have been studied by first-principles calculations. We found that the magnetic ground states of B-doped SrTiO3 strongly depended on the dopant-dopant separation distance. As the dopant-dopant distance varied, the magnetic ground states of B-doped SrTiO3 can have nonmagnetic, ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic alignment. The structure with the smallest dopant-dopant separation exhibited the lowest total energy among all configurations considered and was characterized by dimer pairs due to strong attraction. Ferromagnetic coupling was observed to be stronger when the two adjacent B atoms aligned linearly along the B-Ti-B axis, which could be associated with their local bonding structures. Therefore, the symmetry of the local structure made an important contribution to the generation of a magnetic moment. Our study also demonstrated that the O-Ti-O unit was easier than the Ti-B-Ti unit to deform. The electronic properties of boron-doped SrTiO3 tended to show semiconducting or insulating features when the dopant-dopant distance was less than 5 Å, which changed to metallic properties when the dopant-dopant distance was beyond 5 Å. Our calculated results indicated that it is possible to manipulate the magnetism and band gap via different dopant-dopant separations.

Reactive intermediate phase cold sintering in strontium titanate.

Project description:Dense (>96% theoretical) strontium titanate ceramics were fabricated at 950 °C (conventional sintering temperature > 1400 °C) using a reactive intermediate phase cold sintering process. An aqueous solution of SrCl2 mixed with TiO2 nanoparticles was added to SrTiO3 powders and pressed at 180 °C to obtain a highly compacted green body. During the post-press heating step at 950 °C, the TiO2 and SrCl2 create in-filling micro-reactions around each grain resulting in dense (>96%) SrTiO3 ceramics. Nano- and micron-sized starting powders were used, demonstrating that this reactive intermediate phase cold sintering route can densify a wide range of starting powder sizes, as it not reliant on an amorphous-to-crystalline precipitation through the terrace ledge kink mechanism, as has been identified repeatedly in previous cold sintering mechanisms. Moreover, this process has the potential to densify a wide variety of functional oxides, as a range of different low-temperature chemical synthesis routes could be used.

Transition-Metal Phthalocyanines as Versatile Building Blocks for Molecular Qubits on Surfaces.

Project description:The search for molecular or colloidal building units capable of autonomously organized configurations has been a long-standing endeavor that has resulted in the development of innovative material categories, such as metal-organic and covalent organic or long-range molecular networks. In particular, the possibility of using molecules on surfaces to create specific architectures, for example, those containing nanostructures of S = 1/2 molecular spin, can enable versatile quantum materials and the exploration of future quantum devices. Transition-metal phthalocyanines are particularly attractive candidates as they are stable molecules that can host spin-bearing transition-metal ions in a planar conjugated ring. Here, we use density functional theory calculations to systematically study electronic and magnetic properties and hyperfine parameters for the whole series of 3d transition-metal atoms. We perform transport simulations of selected qubit candidates to further elucidate their suitability for molecular spin qubits on a surface.

Phonon drag thermal Hall effect in metallic strontium titanate.

Project description:SrTiO3, a quantum paralectric, displays a detectable phonon thermal Hall effect (THE). Here, we show that the amplitude of the THE is extremely sensitive to stoichiometry. It drastically decreases upon substitution of a tiny fraction of Sr atoms with Ca, which stabilizes the ferroelectric order. It drastically increases by an even lower density of oxygen vacancies, which turn the system to a dilute metal. The enhancement in the metallic state exceeds by far the sum of the electronic and the phononic contributions. We explain this observation as an outcome of three features: 1) Heat is mostly transported by phonons; 2) the electronic Hall angle is extremely large; and 3) there is substantial momentum exchange between electrons and phonons. Starting from Herring's picture of phonon drag, we arrive to a quantitative account of the enhanced THE. Thus, phonon drag, hitherto detected as an amplifier of thermoelectric coefficients, can generate a purely thermal transverse response in a dilute metal with a large Hall angle. Our results reveal a hitherto-unknown consequence of momentum-conserving collisions between electrons and phonons.

Designing a molecular magnetic button based on 4d and 5d transition-metal phthalocyanines.

Project description:The field of molecular spintronics exploits the properties of organic molecules possessing a magnetic moment, either native in the form of radicals or induced by the insertion of transition metal magnetic ions. To realize logic or storage molecular spin-tronics devices, molecules with stable different magnetic states should be deposited on a substrate, and switching between the states controllably achieved. By means of a first-principles calculations, we have devised a functional molecule exhibiting different magnetic states upon structural changes induced by current injection. We investigate the prototypical case of non-planar M-Phthalocyanine (MPc), where M is a transition-metal ion belonging to the 4d and 5d series. We find that for ZrPc and HfPc deposited on a graphene decorated Ni(111) substrate, two different structural conformations could be stabilized, for which the molecules attain different magnetic states depending on the position of the M ion - whether above the Pc or between the Pc and the substrate -, acting therefore as molecular magnetic button. Our work indicates an intuitive way to engineer a magnetic molecular switch with tailored properties, starting from the knowledge of the basic atomic properties of elements and surfaces.

SBN60, strontium-barium niobate at 100 K.

Project description:The title compound, Sr0.6Ba0.4Nb2O6 (strontium barium niobium oxide), belongs to the group of strontium-barium niobates with varying composition of Sr and Ba. Their general formula can be written as Sr x Ba1 - x Nb2O6. Below the Curie temperature, T c , these materials indicate ferroelectric properties. The Curie temperature for SBN60 is equal to 346±0.5 K so the structure is in the ferroelectric phase at the measurement temperature of 100 K. Characteristic for this family of compounds is the packing along the z-axis. The NbO6 corner-sharing octa-hedra surround three types of vacancy tunnels with penta-gonal, square and triangular shapes. The Sr(2+) ions partially occupy two unique sites, the first one located inside the penta-gon and the second one in the square tunnels. Consequently, they are situated on the mirror plane and the inter-section of two glide planes, respectively. The site inside the penta-gonal tunnel is additionally disordered so that the same position is shared by Ba(2+) and Sr(2+) ions whereas another part of the Ba(2+) ion occupies a different position (relative occupancies 0.43:0.41:0.16). One of the Nb(V) atoms and three of the O(2-) ions occupy general positions. The second Nb(V) atom is located on the inter-section of the mirror planes. Two remaining O(2-) ions are located on the same mirror plane. Only the Nb(V) atom and one of the O(2-) ions which is located on the mirror plane are not disordered. Each of the remaining O(2-) ions is split between two sites, with relative occupancies of 0.52:0.48 (O(2-) ions in general positions) and 0.64:0.36 (O(2-) ion on the mirror plane).

Visible-light-accelerated oxygen vacancy migration in strontium titanate.

Project description:Strontium titanate is a model transition metal oxide that exhibits versatile properties of special interest for both fundamental and applied researches. There is evidence that most of the attractive properties of SrTiO3 are closely associated with oxygen vacancies. Tuning the kinetics of oxygen vacancies is then highly desired. Here we reported on a dramatic tuning of the electro-migration of oxygen vacancies by visible light illumination. It is found that, through depressing activation energy for vacancy diffusion, light illumination remarkably accelerates oxygen vacancies even at room temperature. This effect provides a feasible approach towards the modulation of the anionic processes. The principle proved here can be extended to other perovskite oxides, finding a wide application in oxide electronics.
