A mesoporous non-precious metal boride system: synthesis of mesoporous cobalt boride by strictly controlled chemical reduction.

ABSTRACT: Generating high surface area mesoporous transition metal boride is interesting because the incorporation of boron atoms generates lattice distortions that lead to the formation of amorphous metal boride with unique properties in catalysis. Here we report the first synthesis of mesoporous cobalt boron amorphous alloy colloidal particles using a soft template-directed assembly approach. Dual reducing agents are used to precisely control the chemical reduction process of mesoporous cobalt boron nanospheres. The Earth-abundance of cobalt boride combined with the high surface area and mesoporous nanoarchitecture enables solar-energy efficient photothermal conversion of CO₂ into CO compared to non-porous cobalt boron alloys and commercial cobalt catalysts.

Molten Salt-Assisted Synthesis of Porous Precious Metal-Based Single-Atom Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:Precious metal-based single-atom catalysts (PM-SACs) hosted in N-doped carbon supports have shown new opportunities to revolutionize cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, stabilizing the high density of PM-Nx sites remains a challenge, primarily due to the inherently high free energy of isolated metal atoms, predisposing them to facile atomic agglomeration. Herein, a molten salt-assisted synthesis strategy is proposed to prepare porous PM1/N-CPores (PM = Ru, Pt, and Pd) electrocatalysts with densely accessible PM-Nx sites. A hierarchically porous N-doped carbon substrate (N-CPores), synthesized via the NaCl-assisted pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8, effectively improves the utilization of PM-Nx sites by increased reactants accessible surface area and reduced mass transfer resistance. In accordance with theoretical calculations, the as-prepared Ru1/N-CPores, featuring superior intrinsic active Ru-N4 sites, exhibit outstanding ORR turnover frequency of 6.19 e- site-1 s-1, and outperforms the commercial Pt/C with a 5.3-fold of mass activity (5.83 ± 0.61 A mg-1) at 0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. The commendable activity and stability of Ru1/N-CPores in a real fuel cell device further affirm its practical applicability.

Elucidating Oxygen Reduction Active Sites in Pyrolyzed Metal-Nitrogen Coordinated Non-Precious-Metal Electrocatalyst Systems.

Project description:Detailed understanding of the nature of the active centers in non-precious-metal-based electrocatalyst, and their role in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanistic pathways will have a profound effect on successful commercialization of emission-free energy devices such as fuel cells. Recently, using pyrolyzed model structures of iron porphyrins, we have demonstrated that a covalent integration of the Fe-N x sites into π-conjugated carbon basal plane modifies electron donating/withdrawing capability of the carbonaceous ligand, consequently improving ORR activity. Here, we employ a combination of in situ X-ray spectroscopy and electrochemical methods to identify the various structural and functional forms of the active centers in non-heme Fe/N/C catalysts. Both methods corroboratively confirm the single site 2e- × 2e- mechanism in alkaline media on the primary Fe2+-N4 centers and the dual-site 2e- × 2e- mechanism in acid media with the significant role of the surface bound coexisting Fe/Fe x O y nanoparticles (NPs) as the secondary active sites.

Transition Metal Aluminum Boride as a New Candidate for Ambient-Condition Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis.

Project description:Achieving more meaningful N2 conversion by reducing the energy input and carbon footprint is now being investigated through a method of N2 fixation instead of the Haber-Bosch process. Unfortunately, the electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) method as a rising approach currently still shows low selectivity (Faradaic efficiency < 10%) and high-energy consumption [applied potential at least - 0.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)]. Here, the role of molybdenum aluminum boride single crystals, belonging to a family of ternary transition metal aluminum borides known as MAB phases, is reported for the electrochemical NRR for the first time, at a low applied potential (- 0.05 V versus RHE) under ambient conditions and in alkaline media. Due to the unique nano-laminated crystal structure of the MAB phase, these inexpensive materials have been found to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performances (NH3 yield: 9.2 µg h-1 cm-2 mg cat. -1 , Faradaic efficiency: 30.1%) at the low overpotential, and to display a high chemical stability and sustained catalytic performance. In conjunction, further mechanism studies indicate B and Al as main-group metals show a highly selective affinity to N2 due to the strong interaction between the B 2p/Al 3p band and the N 2p orbitals, while Mo exhibits specific catalytic activity toward the subsequent reduction reaction. Overall, the MAB-phase catalyst under the synergy of the elements within ternary compound can suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction and achieve enhanced NRR performance. The significance of this work is to provide a promising candidate in the future synthesis of ammonia.

Identification of carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles as active species in non-precious metal oxygen reduction catalysts.

Project description:The widespread use of fuel cells is currently limited by the lack of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. Iron-based non-precious metal catalysts exhibit promising activity and stability, as an alternative to state-of-the-art platinum catalysts. However, the identity of the active species in non-precious metal catalysts remains elusive, impeding the development of new catalysts. Here we demonstrate the reversible deactivation and reactivation of an iron-based non-precious metal oxygen reduction catalyst achieved using high-temperature gas-phase chlorine and hydrogen treatments. In addition, we observe a decrease in catalyst heterogeneity following treatment with chlorine and hydrogen, using Mössbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our study reveals that protected sites adjacent to iron nanoparticles are responsible for the observed activity and stability of the catalyst. These findings may allow for the design and synthesis of enhanced non-precious metal oxygen reduction catalysts with a higher density of active sites.

Precious-Metal-Decorated Chromium(IV) Oxide Nanowires as Efficient Catalysts for 2,4-Toluenediamine Synthesis.

Project description:The catalytic hydrogenation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) to 2,4-toluenediamine (TDA) is a key step in the production of polyurethanes; therefore, the development of efficient hydrogenation catalysts for industrial use is of paramount importance. In the present study, chromium(IV) oxide nanowires were decorated by palladium and platinum nanoparticles in a one-step, simple, and fast preparation method to yield highly efficient hydrogenation catalysts for immediate use. The nanoparticles were deposited onto the surface of CrO2 nanowires by using ultrasonic cavitation and ethanol as a reduction agent. Beneficially, the catalyst became catalytically active right at the end of the preparation and no further treatment was necessary. The activity of the Pd- and Pt-decorated CrO2 catalysts were compared in the hydrogenation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT). Both catalysts have shown high activity in the hydrogenation tests. The DNT conversion exceeded 98% in both cases, whereas the 2,4-toluenediamine (TDA) yields were 99.7 n/n% and 98.8 n/n%, with the Pd/CrO2 and Pt/CrO2, respectively, at 333 K and 20 bar H2 pressure. In the case of the Pt/CrO2 catalyst, 304.08 mol of TDA formed with 1 mol Pt after 1 h hydrogenation. Activation energies were also calculated to be approximately 24 kJ∙mol-1. Besides their immediate applicability, our catalysts were well dispersible in the reaction medium (methanolic solution of DNT). Moreover, because of their magnetic behavior, the catalysts were easy to handle and remove from the reaction media by using a magnetic field.

Increasing Accessible Active Site Density of Non-Precious Metal Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts through Ionic Liquid Modification.

Project description:Non-precious metal catalysts show great promise to replace the state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), while their catalytic activity still needs to be greatly improved before their broad-based application. Here, we report a facile approach to improving the performance of zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived carbon (ZDC) toward the ORR by incorporating a small amount of ionic liquid (IL). The IL would preferentially fill the micropores of ZDC and greatly enhance the utilization of the active sites within the micropores, which are initially not accessible due to insufficient surface wetting. It is also disclosed that the ORR activity in terms of kinetic current at 0.85 V depends on the loading amount of the IL, and the maximum activity is obtained at a mass ratio of IL to ZDC at 1.2. The optimum stems from the counterbalance between the enhanced utilization of the active sites within the micropores and the retarded diffusion of the reactants within the IL phase due to its high viscosity.

Nano-Dimensional Carbon Nanosphere Supported Non-Precious Metal Oxide Composite: A Cathode Material for Sea Water Reduction.

Project description:Generation of hydrogen fuel at cathode during the electrolysis of seawater can be economically beneficial considering the vast availability of the electrolyte although it faces sluggishness caused by the anode reactions. In this regard a carbon nanosphere-protected CuO/Co3O4 (CCuU) composite was synthesized through heat treatment and was used as the cathode material for electrocatalytic seawater splitting. CCuU showed a significantly low overpotential of 73 mV@10 mA cm-2, Tafel slope of 58 mV dec-1 and relatively constant activity and morphology over a long time electrocatalytic study. A synergy within metal oxide centers was observed that boosted the proton-electron transfer at the active site. Moreover, the presence of carbon support increased the electroactive surface area and stability of the composite. The activity of the CCuU was studied for HER in KOH and alkaline NaCl solution to understand the activity. This work will pave the way for designing mesoporous non-precious electrocatalysts towards seawater electrocatalysis.

Reactive Metal Boride Nanoparticles Trap Lipopolysaccharide and Peptidoglycan for Bacteria-Infected Wound Healing

Project description:Bacteria and excessive inflammation are two main factors causing non-healing wounds. However, current studies have mainly focused on the inhibition of bacteria survival for wound healing while ignoring the excessive inflammation induced by dead bacteria-released lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or peptidoglycan (PGN). Herein, a boron-trapping strategy has been proposed to prevent both infection and excessive inflammation by synthesizing a class of reactive metal boride nanoparticles (MB NPs). Our results show that the MB NPs are gradually hydrolyzed to generate boron dihydroxy groups and metal cations while generating a local alkaline microenvironment. This microenvironment greatly enhances boron dihydroxy groups to trap LPS or PGN through an esterification reaction, which not only enhances metal cation-induced bacterial death but also inhibits dead bacteria-induced excessive inflammation both in vitro and in vivo, finally accelerating wound healing. Taken together, this boron-trapping strategy provides an approach to the treatment of bacterial infection and the accompanying inflammation.

In Vitro Transcriptome Analysis of Cobalt Boride Nanoparticles on Human Pulmonary Alveolar Cells.

Project description:Nanobiotechnology influences many different areas, including the medical, food, energy, clothing, and cosmetics industries. Considering the wide usage of nanomaterials, it is necessary to investigate the toxicity potentials of specific nanosized molecules. Boron-containing nanoparticles (NPs) are attracting much interest from scientists due to their unique physicochemical properties. However, there is limited information concerning the toxicity of boron-containing NPs, including cobalt boride (Co2B) NPs. Therefore, in this study, Co2B NPs were characterized using X-ray crystallography (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. Then, we performed 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl) 2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and neutral red (NR) assays for assessing cell viability against Co2B NP exposure on cultured human pulmonary alveolar epithelial cells (HPAEpiC). In addition, whole-genome microarray analysis was carried out to reveal the global gene expression differentiation of HPAEpiC cells after Co2B NP application. The cell viability tests unveiled an IC50 value for Co2B NPs of 310.353 mg/L. The results of our microarray analysis displayed 719 gene expression differentiations (FC ≥ 2) among the analyzed 40,000 genes. The performed visualization and integrated discovery (DAVID) analysis revealed that there were interactions between various gene pathways and administration of the NPs. Based on gene ontology biological processes analysis, we found that the P53 signaling pathway, cell cycle, and cancer-affecting genes were mostly affected by the Co2B NPs. In conclusion, we suggested that Co2B NPs would be a safe and effective nanomolecule for industrial applications, particularly for medical purposes.

Synthesis of mesoporous ceria using metal- and halogen-free ordered mesoporous carbon as a hard template.

Project description:Ordered mesoporous cerias were synthesised by employing metal- and halogen-free ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) as the hard templates in a 'nanocasting' procedure. TEM, small angle (SA) and wide angle (WA) XRD, and N2 physisorption analyses were used to characterise the templates, intermediates and ceria products and electron tomography (STEM-HAADF) was used to explore the 3D morphology of the ceria nanostructures grown within the carbon templates. This allowed the relationships between the structures of the OMC templates and the products to be considered in detail as two parameters were varied. These were: the method of impregnation of the ceria precursor; and the temperature of calcination of the OMC template. Of the four impregnation methods tested, the solid-liquid method was found to be the most successful. This gave a high quality product with the highest yield of uniform mesopores, and crystalline nanorods of ceria arrayed in clear long-range order, as viewed by TEM and determined in SA and WAXRD. The specific surface area and pore volume exhibited by this sample were 111 m2 g-1 and 0.39 cm3 g-1, respectively. 3D electron tomography reconstructions revealed the presence of a network of ordered, nanoscale, rod-like structures interlinked in a complex fashion. The effect of calcination temperature of the template on uptake of the ceria precursor during impregnation was studied by calcining OMCs at temperatures from 350 to 800 °C and using these as hard templates for the nanocasting of ceria. Of these, the carbon template calcined at 400 °C gave the highest quality product.
