Angiosperm plants reproduce both sexually and asexually (by apomixis). In apomictic plants, the embryo and endosperm develop without fertilization. Modern maize seems to have a broken apomixis-triggering mechanism, which still works in <i>Tripsacum</i> and in <i>Tripsacum</i>-maize hybrids.
