Light Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries Using V₂O₅ Cathodes.

ABSTRACT: Solar energy is one of the most actively pursued renewable energy sources, but like many other sustainable energy sources, its intermittent character means solar cells have to be connected to an energy storage system to balance production and demand. To improve the efficiency of this energy conversion and storage process, photobatteries have recently been proposed where one of the battery electrodes is made from a photoactive material that can directly be charged by light without using solar cells. Here, we present photorechargeable lithium-ion batteries (Photo-LIBs) using photocathodes based on vanadium pentoxide nanofibers mixed with P3HT and rGO additives. These photocathodes support the photocharge separation and transportation process needed to recharge. The proposed Photo-LIBs show capacity enhancements of more than 57% under illumination and can be charged to ∼2.82 V using light and achieve conversion efficiencies of ∼2.6% for 455 nm illumination and ∼0.22% for 1 sun illumination.

Stabilizing nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes by magnesium doping for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Nickel-rich layered transition metal oxides are attractive cathode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries but suffer from inherent structural and thermal instabilities that limit the deliverable capacity and cycling performance on charging to a cutoff voltage above 4.3 V. Here we report LiNi0.90Co0.07Mg0.03O2 as a stable cathode material. The obtained LiNi0.90Co0.07Mg0.03O2 microspheres exhibit high capacity (228.3 mA h g-1 at 0.1C) and remarkable cyclability (84.3% capacity retention after 300 cycles). Combined X-ray diffraction and Cs-corrected microscopy reveal that Mg doping stabilizes the layered structure by suppressing Li/Ni cation mixing and Ni migration to interlayer Li slabs. Because of the pillar effect of Mg in Li sites, LiNi0.90Co0.07Mg0.03O2 shows decent thermal stability and small lattice variation until it is charged to 4.7 V, undergoing a H1-H2 phase transition without discernible formation of an unstable H3 phase. The results indicate that moderate Mg doping is a facile yet effective strategy to develop high-performance Ni-rich cathode materials.

Light-assisted delithiation of lithium iron phosphate nanocrystals towards photo-rechargeable lithium ion batteries.

Project description:Recently, intensive efforts are dedicated to convert and store the solar energy in a single device. Herein, dye-synthesized solar cell technology is combined with lithium-ion materials to investigate light-assisted battery charging. In particular we report the direct photo-oxidation of lithium iron phosphate nanocrystals in the presence of a dye as a hybrid photo-cathode in a two-electrode system, with lithium metal as anode and lithium hexafluorophosphate in carbonate-based electrolyte; a configuration corresponding to lithium ion battery charging. Dye-sensitization generates electron-hole pairs with the holes aiding the delithiation of lithium iron phosphate at the cathode and electrons utilized in the formation of a solid electrolyte interface at the anode via oxygen reduction. Lithium iron phosphate acts effectively as a reversible redox agent for the regeneration of the dye. Our findings provide possibilities in advancing the design principles for photo-rechargeable lithium ion batteries.

Reclaimed and Up-Cycled Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:As electric vehicles become more widely used, there is a higher demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and hence a greater incentive to find better ways to recycle these at their end-of-life (EOL). This work focuses on the process of reclamation and re-use of cathode material from LIBs. Black mass containing mixed LiMn2O4 and Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 from a Nissan Leaf pouch cell are recovered via two different recycling routes, shredding or disassembly. The waste material stream purity is compared for both processes, less aluminium and copper impurities are present in the disassembled waste stream. The reclaimed black mass is further treated to reclaim the transition metals in a salt solution, Ni, Mn, Co ratios are adjusted in order to synthesize an upcycled cathode, LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 via a co-precipitation method. The two reclamation processes (disassembly and shredding) are evaluated based on the purity of the reclaimed material, the performance of the remanufactured cell, and the energy required for the complete process. The electrochemical performance of recycled material is comparable to that of as-manufactured cathode material, indicating no detrimental effect of purified recycled transition metal content. This research represents an important step toward scalable approaches to the recycling of EOL cathode material in LIBs.

LFP-Based Gravure Printed Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Printed Batteries.

Project description:Printed batteries have undergone increased investigation in recent years because of the growing daily use of small electronic devices. With this in mind, industrial gravure printing has emerged as a suitable production technology due to its high speed and quality, and its capability to produce any shape of image. The technique is one of the most appealing for the production of functional layers for many different purposes, but it has not been highly investigated. In this study, we propose a LiFePO4 (LFP)-based gravure printed cathode for lithium-ion rechargeable printed batteries and investigate the possibility of employing this printing technique in battery manufacture.

Scalable functionalized graphene nano-platelets as tunable cathodes for high-performance lithium rechargeable batteries.

Project description:High-performance and cost-effective rechargeable batteries are key to the success of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems. Extensive research has focused on the development of (i) new high-energy electrodes that can store more lithium or (ii) high-power nano-structured electrodes hybridized with carbonaceous materials. However, the current status of lithium batteries based on redox reactions of heavy transition metals still remains far below the demands required for the proposed applications. Herein, we present a novel approach using tunable functional groups on graphene nano-platelets as redox centers. The electrode can deliver high capacity of ~250 mAh g⁻¹, power of ~20 kW kg⁻¹ in an acceptable cathode voltage range, and provide excellent cyclability up to thousands of repeated charge/discharge cycles. The simple, mass-scalable synthetic route for the functionalized graphene nano-platelets proposed in this work suggests that the graphene cathode can be a promising new class of electrode.

Cobalt-free composite-structured cathodes with lithium-stoichiometry control for sustainable lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Lithium-ion batteries play a crucial role in decarbonizing transportation and power grids, but their reliance on high-cost, earth-scarce cobalt in the commonly employed high-energy layered Li(NiMnCo)O2 cathodes raises supply-chain and sustainability concerns. Despite numerous attempts to address this challenge, eliminating Co from Li(NiMnCo)O2 remains elusive, as doing so detrimentally affects its layering and cycling stability. Here, we report on the rational stoichiometry control in synthesizing Li-deficient composite-structured LiNi0.95Mn0.05O2, comprising intergrown layered and rocksalt phases, which outperforms traditional layered counterparts. Through multiscale-correlated experimental characterization and computational modeling on the calcination process, we unveil the role of Li-deficiency in suppressing the rocksalt-to-layered phase transformation and crystal growth, leading to small-sized composites with the desired low anisotropic lattice expansion/contraction during charging and discharging. As a consequence, Li-deficient LiNi0.95Mn0.05O2 delivers 90% first-cycle Coulombic efficiency, 90% capacity retention, and close-to-zero voltage fade for 100 deep cycles, showing its potential as a Co-free cathode for sustainable Li-ion batteries.

Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries with honeycomb-layered tellurates as high voltage cathodes and fast potassium-ion conductors.

Project description:Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries have been gaining traction as not only promising low-cost alternatives to lithium-ion technology, but also as high-voltage energy storage systems. However, their development and sustainability are plagued by the lack of suitable electrode materials capable of allowing the reversible insertion of the large potassium ions. Here, exploration of the database for potassium-based materials has led us to discover potassium ion conducting layered honeycomb frameworks. They show the capability of reversible insertion of potassium ions at high voltages (~4 V for K2Ni2TeO6) in stable ionic liquids based on potassium bis(trifluorosulfonyl) imide, and exhibit remarkable ionic conductivities e.g. ~0.01 mS cm-1 at 298 K and ~40 mS cm-1 at 573 K for K2Mg2TeO6. In addition to enlisting fast potassium ion conductors that can be utilised as solid electrolytes, these layered honeycomb frameworks deliver the highest voltages amongst layered cathodes, becoming prime candidates for the advancement of high-energy density potassium-ion batteries.

Construction of Uniform LiF Coating Layers for Stable High-Voltage LiCoO2 Cathodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Stabilizing LiCoO2 (LCO) at 4.5 V rather than the common 4.2 V is important for the high specific capacity. In this study, we developed a simple and efficient way to improve the stability of LiCoO2 at high voltages. After a simple sol-gel method, we introduced trifluoroacetic acid (TA) to the surface of LCO via an afterwards calcination. Meanwhile, the TA reacted with residual lithium on the surface of LCO, further leading to the formation of uniform LiF nanoshells. The LiF nanoshells could effectively restrict the interfacial side reaction, hinder the transition metal dissolution and thus achieve a stable cathode-electrolyte interface at high working-voltages. As a result, the LCO@LiF demonstrated a much superior cycling stability with a capacity retention ratio of 83.54% after 100 cycles compared with the bare ones (43.3% for capacity retention), as well as high rate performances. Notably, LiF coating layers endow LCO with excellent high-temperature performances and outstanding full-cell performances. This work provides a simple and effective way to prepare stable LCO materials working at a high voltage.

Insights into Layered Oxide Cathodes for Rechargeable Batteries.

Project description:Layered intercalation compounds are the dominant cathode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries. In this article we summarize in a pedagogical way our work in understanding how the structure's topology, electronic structure, and chemistry interact to determine its electrochemical performance. We discuss how alkali-alkali interactions within the Li layer influence the voltage profile, the role of the transition metal electronic structure in dictating O3-structural stability, and the mechanism for alkali diffusion. We then briefly delve into emerging, next-generation Li-ion cathodes that move beyond layered intercalation hosts by discussing disordered rocksalt Li-excess structures, a class of materials which may be essential in circumventing impending resource limitations in our era of clean energy technology.

Performance optimization of freestanding MWCNT-LiFePO4 sheets as cathodes for improved specific capacity of lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:The typical lithium-ion-battery positive electrode of "lithium-iron phosphate (LiFePO4) on aluminum foil" contains a relatively large amount of inactive materials of 29 wt% (22 wt% aluminum foil + 7 wt% polymeric binder and graphitic conductor) which limits its maximum specific capacity to 120.7 mA h g-1 (71 wt% LiFePO4) instead of 170 mA h g-1 (100 wt% LiFePO4). We replaced the aluminum current-collector with a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) network. We optimized the specific capacity of the "freestanding MWCNT-LiFePO4" positive electrode. Through the optimization of our unique surface-engineered tape-cast fabrication method, we demonstrated the amount of LiFePO4 active materials can be as high as 90 wt% with a small amount of inactive material of 10 wt% MWCNTs. This translated to a maximum specific capacity of 153 mA h g-1 instead of 120.7 mA h g-1, which is a significant 26.7% gain in specific capacity compared to conventional cathode design. Experimental data of the freestanding MWCNT-LiFePO4 at a low discharge rate of 17 mA g-1 show an excellent specific capacity of 144.9 mA h g-1 which is close to its maximum specific capacity of 153 mA h g-1. Furthermore, the freestanding MWCNT-LiFePO4 has an excellent specific capacity of 126.7 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at a relatively high discharge rate of 170 mA g-1 rate.
