Surface Potential Driven Water Harvesting from Fog.

ABSTRACT: Access to clean water is a global challenge, and fog collectors are a promising solution. Polycarbonate (PC) fibers have been used in fog collectors but with limited efficiency. In this study, we show that controlling voltage polarity and humidity during the electrospinning of PC fibers improves their surface properties for water collection capability. We experimentally measured the effect of both the surface morphology and the chemistry of PC fiber on their surface potential and mechanical properties in relation to the water collection efficiency from fog. PC fibers produced at high humidity and with negative voltage polarity show a superior water collection rate combined with the highest tensile strength. We proved that electric potential on surface and morphology are crucial, as often designed by nature, for enhancing the water collection capabilities via the single-step production of fibers without any postprocessing needs.

Silicon-Based Superslippery/Superhydrophilic Striped Surface for Highly Efficient Fog Harvesting.

Project description:Fog-harvesting performance is influenced by surface wettability, patterned structure and the heat transfer coefficient. In this work, we have prepared different surfaces with a stripe array of superhydrophilic, superslippery and superslippery/superhydrophilic surfaces for fog harvesting on silicon substrates using photolithography and silver-assisted chemical etching. The surface wettability and heat transfer coefficients of the above samples have been investigated. We analyzed the contact angle, sliding angle and transport state of droplets on these surfaces. The fog-harvesting rate of all samples under different voltages of the cooling pad (V = 0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 V) was measured. Results showed that the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface could achieve rapid droplet nucleation, directional transport and efficient collection due to its superhydrophilic striated channels and the Laplace pressure difference between different wettability regions. At a condensation voltage of 3.5 V, the fog-harvesting rate efficiencies of the uniformly striped superhydrophilic and superslippery surface were 1351 mg·cm-2·h-1 and 1265 mg·cm-2·h-1, respectively, while the fog-harvesting rate of the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface was 1748 mg·cm-2·h-1. Compared with the original silicon surface, the maximum fog-harvesting rate of the superslippery/superhydrophilic striped surface was improved by 86.9%. This study offers significant insights into the impact of heat transfer and silicon surface wettability on the process of fog collection.

Three-Dimensional Multilayer Vertical Filament Meshes for Enhancing Efficiency in Fog Water Harvesting.

Project description:Novel types of vertical filament mesh (VFM) fog harvesters, 3D VFM fog harvesters, and multilayer 3D VFM fog harvesters were developed by mimicking the water-harvesting nature of desert beetles and the spider silks from fog. Four different types of polymer filaments with different hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties were used. The polymer filaments were modified with the polyurethane-sodium alginate (PU-SA) mixture solution, and a simple spraying method was used to form alternating 3D PU-SA microbumps. Polymer VFMs exhibited a higher fog-harvesting efficiency than the vertical metal meshes. Moreover, the hydrophobic VFM was more efficient in fog harvesting than the hydrophilic VFM. Notably, the fog-harvesting efficiency of all VFMs increased by 30-80% after spraying with the mixed PU-SA solution to form a 3D geometric surface structure (3D PU-SA microbumps), which mimicked the desert beetle back surface. This modification caused the fog-harvesting efficiency of PTFE 3D VFM to be thrice higher than that of Fe VFM. This increase was attributed to the improved synergistic effects of fog capturing, droplet growing, and droplet shedding. The multilayer VFMs were more efficient in fog harvesting than the single-layer VFMs because of a larger droplet capture area. The fog-harvesting efficiency of two-layer and four-layer polymer VFMs was approximately 35% and about 45% higher than that of the single-layer polymer VFMs, respectively. The four-layer PTFE 3D VFM with the type B PU-SA bump surface (bump/PU-SA) had the highest efficiency of 287.6 mL/m2/h. Besides the high fog-harvesting efficiency, the proposed polymer VFMs are highly stable, cost-effective, rust-free, and easy to install in practical applications. These advantages are ascribed to the elasticity of the polymer filaments. This work provides new ideas and methods for developing high-performance fog harvesters such as the 3D VFM.

Multi-bioinspired hierarchical integrated hydrogel for passive fog harvesting and solar-driven seawater desalination.

Project description:In recent years, with the outbreak and epidemic of the novel coronavirus in the world, how to obtain clean water from the limited resources has become an urgent issue of concern to all mankind. Atmospheric water harvesting technology and solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology have shown great potential in seeking clean and sustainable water resources. Here, inspired by a variety of organisms in nature, a multi-functional hydrogel matrix composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA) cross-linked by borax as well as doped with zeolitic imidazolate framework material 67 (ZIF-67) and graphene owning macro/micro/nano hierarchical structure has successfully fabricated for producing clean water. The hydrogel not only can reach the average water harvesting ratio up to 22.44 g g-1 under the condition of fog flow after 5 h, but also be capable of desorbing the harvested water with water release efficiency of 1.67 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun. In addition to excellent performance in passive fog harvesting, the evaporation rate over 1.89 kg m-2 h-1 is attained under 1 sun on natural seawater during long-term. This hydrogel indicates its potential in producing clean water resources in multiple scenarios in different dry or wet states, and which holds great promise for flexible electronic materials and sustainable sewage or wastewater treatment applications.

Surface morphology enhances deposition efficiency in biomimetic, wind-driven fog collection.

Project description:Passive interception of fog from the wind is an effective solution for accessing water in regions where fog is frequent and other sources scarce. A Namib Desert beetle is often cited as bioinspiration for further advancement, in a narrative which focuses on patterned wettability of its bumpy elytra as a means of transporting accumulated water from its back to its mouth. However, surface transport in fog collection is secondary to the role of the fluid dynamics of droplet deposition, in which inertial droplets migrate across diverging streamlines approaching an obstruction. 3D geometry of biological surface features inevitably affect this process, but its specific role in flow physics of fog collection has not previously been explored. Here, we report experimental measurements of deposition efficiency of targets with identical surface chemistry but varying surface morphology. We find a nearly threefold increase in collection upon addition of millimetric bumps to a spherical target, and provide insight into the micromechanics underlying the performance. Modifying surface morphology can be easier than overall geometry for both manufactured structures and evolved organisms and should therefore be both considered in the design of separation devices and expected in other biological systems for which extraction of particles from flow is important.

Photoresponsive Electrospun Fiber Meshes with Switchable Wettability for Effective Fog Water Harvesting in Variable Humidity Conditions.

Project description:The global water supply worsens yearly with climate change; therefore, the need for sustainable water resources is growing. One of them is fog water collectors with variable surface wettability, with multifunctional designs for utilization worldwide and to address regions with low humidity levels. Therefore, we created fiber meshes with a photoresponsive switchable surface. This study uses electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) meshes, whose wettability is controlled by adding TiO2. The fog water collection performance is studied at high and low humidity levels. With TiO2-PVDF, the electrospun mesh can be converted from hydrophobic to hydrophilic under UV irradiation and transformed back to a hydrophobic state with heat treatment. The switchable meshes were found to be more effective at water collection after UV irradiation at lower fog rates of 200 mL·h-1. The ability to switch between hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties as needed is highly desired in fog collection applications using electrospun meshes, as it can improve overall efficiency after UV irradiation.

The effects of surface wettability on the fog and dew moisture harvesting performance on tubular surfaces.

Project description:The efficient water harvesting from air-laden moisture has been a subject of great interest to address world-wide water shortage issues. Recently, it has been shown that tailoring surface wettability can enhance the moisture harvesting performance. However, depending on the harvesting condition, a different conclusion has often been reported and it remains unclear what type of surface wettability would be desirable for the efficient water harvesting under the given condition. Here we compare the water harvesting performance of the surfaces with various wettability under two different harvesting conditions-dewing and fogging, and show that the different harvesting efficiency of each surface under these two conditions can be understood by considering the relative importance of the water capturing and removal efficiency of the surface. At fogging, the moisture harvesting performance is determined by the water removal efficiency of the surface with the oil-infused surfaces exhibiting the best performance. Meanwhile, at dewing, both the water capturing and removal efficiency are crucial to the harvesting performance. And well-wetting surfaces with a lower barrier to nucleation of condensates exhibit a better harvesting performance due to the increasing importance of the water capture efficiency over the water removal efficiency at dewing.

Harvesting water surface energy: self-jumping nanostructured hydrophobic metals.

Project description:Water in motion is a significant energy source worldwide, but the surface energy of water is rarely utilized as a power source. In this study, we made metals unsinkable and able to jump out of the water by harvesting the water surface energy. This effect is attributed to the enhanced floating ability of the nanostructures on copper and stainless steel foil surfaces. Sufficiently thin hydrophobic metals can slowly float underwater through air trapping at the surface and then rapidly leap out of the water on contact with the water-air interface. The mechanism is related to the surface energy of the water, which contributes to the 15 mg metals with a power of 0.49 μW experiencing rapid changes in velocity and acceleration at the interface. The conversion of surface energy to eject nanostructured hydrophobic materials from the liquid surface may lead to new solid-liquid separation techniques.

Atmospheric Water Harvesting: Role of Surface Wettability and Edge Effect.

Project description:Atmospheric water is emerging as an important potable water source. The present work experimentally and theoretically investigates water condensation and collection on flat surfaces with contrasting contact angles and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) to elucidate their roles on water mass collection efficiency. The experimental results indicate that a hydrophilic surface promotes nucleation and individual droplets growth, and a surface with a low CAH tends to let a smaller droplet to slide down, but the overall water mass collection efficiency is independent of both surface contact angle and CAH. The experimental results agree well with our theoretical calculations. During water condensation, a balance has to be struck between single droplet growth and droplet density on a surface so as to maintain a constant water droplet surface coverage ratio, which renders the role of both surface wettability and hysteresis insignificant to the ultimate water mass collection. Moreover, water droplets on the edges of a surface grow much faster than those on the non-edge areas and thus dominate the contribution to the water mass collection by the entire surface, directly pointing out the very important role of edge effect on water condensation and collection.

Bioinspired asymmetric amphiphilic surface for triboelectric enhanced efficient water harvesting.

Project description:The effective acquisition of clean water from atmospheric water offers a potential sustainable solution for increasing global water and energy shortages. In this study, an asymmetric amphiphilic surface incorporating self-driven triboelectric adsorption was developed to obtain clean water from the atmosphere. Inspired by cactus spines and beetle elytra, the asymmetric amphiphilic surface was constructed by synthesizing amphiphilic cellulose ester coatings followed by coating on laser-engraved spines of fluorinated ethylene propylene. Notably, the spontaneous interfacial triboelectric charge between the droplet and the collector was exploited for electrostatic adsorption. Additionally, the droplet triboelectric nanogenerator converts the mechanical energy generated by droplets falling into electrical energy through the volume effect, achieving an excellent output performance, and further enhancing the electrostatic adsorption by means of external charges, which achieved a water harvesting efficiency of 93.18 kg/m2 h. This strategy provides insights for the design of water harvesting system.

Moisture-induced autonomous surface potential oscillations for energy harvesting.

Project description:A variety of autonomous oscillations in nature such as heartbeats and some biochemical reactions have been widely studied and utilized for applications in the fields of bioscience and engineering. Here, we report a unique phenomenon of moisture-induced electrical potential oscillations on polymers, poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide-co-acrylic acid), during the diffusion of water molecules. Chemical reactions are modeled by kinetic simulations while system dynamic equations and the stability matrix are analyzed to show the chaotic nature of the system which oscillates with hidden attractors to induce the autonomous surface potential oscillation. Using moisture in the ambient environment as the activation source, this self-excited chemoelectrical reaction could have broad influences and usages in surface-reaction based devices and systems. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, an energy harvester is constructed and achieved the continuous energy production for more than 15,000 seconds with an energy density of 16.8 mJ/cm2. A 2-Volts output voltage has been produced to power a liquid crystal display toward practical applications with five energy harvesters connected in series.
