Project description:The experimental study of the oxidation of a blend containing n-decane and a large unsaturated ester, methyl oleate, was performed in a jet-stirred reactor over a wide range of temperature covering both low and high temperature regions (550-1100 K), at a residence time of 1.5 s, at quasi atmospheric pressure with high dilution in helium (n-decane and methyl oleate inlet mole fractions of 1.48 × 10-3 and 5.2 × 10-4) and under stoichiometric conditions. The formation of numerous reaction products was observed. At low and intermediate temperatures, the oxidation of the blend led to the formation of species containing oxygen atoms like cyclic ethers, aldehydes and ketones deriving from n-decane and methyl oleate. At higher temperature, these species were not formed anymore and the presence of unsaturated species was observed. Because of the presence of the double bond in the middle of the alkyl chain of methyl oleate, the formation of some specific products was observed. These species are dienes and esters with two double bonds produced from the decomposition paths of methyl oleate and some species obtained from the addition of H-atoms, OH and HO2 radicals to the double bond. Experimental results were compared with former results of the oxidation of a blend of n-decane and methyl palmitate performed under similar conditions. This comparison allowed highlighting the similarities and the differences in the reactivity and in the distribution of the reaction products for the oxidation of large saturated and unsaturated esters.

Project description:Oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is a promising technique for converting methane to higher hydrocarbons in a single reactor. Catalytic OCM is known to proceed via both gas-phase and surface chemical reactions. It is essential to first implement an accurate gas-phase model and then to further develop comprehensive homogeneous-heterogeneous OCM reaction networks. In this work, OCM gas-phase kinetics using a jet-stirred reactor are studied in the absence of a catalyst and simulated using a 0-D reactor model. Experiments were conducted in OCM-relevant operating conditions under various temperatures, residence times, and inlet CH4/O2 ratios. Simulations of different gas-phase models related to methane oxidation were implemented and compared against the experimental data. Quantities of interest (QoI) and rate of production analyses on hydrocarbon products were also performed to evaluate the models. The gas-phase models taken from catalytic reaction networks could not adequately describe the experimental gas-phase performances. NUIGMech1.1 was selected as the most comprehensive model to describe the OCM gas-phase kinetics; it is recommended for further use as the gas-phase model for constructing homogeneous-heterogeneous reaction networks.

Project description:This work presents new experimental data for n-C3-C6 alcohol, combustion (n-propanol, n-butanol, n-pentanol, n-hexanol). Speciation measurements have been carried out in a jet-stirred reactor (p = 107 kPa, T = 550-1100 K, φ = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0) for n-butanol, n-pentanol, and n-hexanol. Ignition delay times of ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, and n-pentanol/air mixtures were measured in a rapid compression machine at φ = 1.0, p = 10 and 30 bar, and T = 704-935 K. The kinetic subsets for alcohol pyrolysis and oxidation from the CRECK kinetic model have been systematically updated to describe the pyrolysis and high- and low-temperature oxidation of this series of fuels as described in Part I of this work (Pelucchi M.; Namysl S.; Ranzi E.Combustion of n-C3-C6 linear alcohol: an experimental and kinetic modeling study. Part I: reaction classes, rate rules, model lumping and validation. Submitted to Energy and Fuels, 2020). Part II describes in detail the facilities used for this systematic experimental investigation of n-C3-C6 alcohol combustion and presents a complete validation of the kinetic model by means of comparisons with the new data and measurements previously reported in the literature for both pyrolytic and oxidative conditions. Kinetic analyses such as rate of production and sensitivity analyses are used to highlight the governing reaction pathways and reasons for existing deviations, motivating possible further improvements in our chemistry mechanism.

Project description:A single-pulse shock tube study of the pyrolysis of two different concentrations of Chinese RP-3 jet fuel at 5 bar in the temperature range of 900-1800 K has been performed in this work. Major intermediates are obtained and quantified using gas chromatography analysis. A flame-ionization detector and a thermal conductivity detector are used for species identification and quantification. Ethylene is the most abundant product in the pyrolysis process. Other important intermediates such as methane, ethane, propyne, acetylene, butene, and benzene are also identified and quantified. Kinetic modeling is performed using several detailed, semidetailed, and lumped mechanisms. It is found that the predictions for the major species such as ethylene, propene, and methane are acceptable. However, current kinetic mechanisms still need refinement for some important species. Different kinetic mechanisms exhibit very different performance in the prediction of certain species during the pyrolysis process. The rate of production (ROP) is carried out to compare the differences among these mechanisms and to identify major reaction pathways to the formation and consumption of the important species, and the results indicate that further studies on the thermal decomposition of 1,3-butadiene are needed to optimize kinetic models. The experimental data are expected to contribute to a database for the validation of mechanisms under pyrolytic conditions for RP-3 jet fuel and should also be valuable to a better understanding of the combustion behavior of RP-3 jet fuel.

Project description:The gas-phase oxidation of n-butane has been studied in an atmospheric jet-stirred reactor (JSR) at temperatures up to 950 K. For the first time, continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (cw-CRDS) in the near-infrared has been used, together with gas chromatography (GC), to analyze the products formed during its oxidation. In addition to the quantification of formaldehyde and water, which is always difficult by GC, cw-CRDS allowed as well the quantification of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). A comparison of the obtained mole fraction temperature profiles with simulations using a detailed gas-phase mechanism shows a good agreement at temperatures below 750 K, but an overestimation of the overall reactivity above this temperature. Also, a strong overestimation was found for the H2O2 mole fraction at higher temperatures. In order to improve the agreement between model and experimental results, two modifications have been implemented to the model: (a) the rate constant for the decomposition of H2O2 (+M) ↔ 2OH (+M) has been updated to the value recently proposed by Troe (Combust. Flame, 2011, 158, 594-601) and (b) a temperature dependent heterogeneous destruction of H2O2 on the hot reactor walls with assumed rate parameters has been added. The improvement (a) slows down the overall reactivity at higher temperatures, but has a negligible impact on the maximal H2O2 mole fraction. Improvement (b) has also a small impact on the overall reactivity at higher temperatures, but a large effect on the maximal H2O2 mole fraction. Both modifications lead to an improved agreement between model and experiment for the oxidation of n-butane in a JSR at temperatures above 750 K.

Project description:The successful industrial production of ethanol and fine chemicals requires the development of new biocatalytic reactors and support materials to achieve economically viable processes. In this work, a Stirred-Catalytic-Basket-BioReactor using various immobilizing foams as support material and compared to free cells were used, focusing mainly on; (i) effect of mass-transfer on cells physiology and (ii) ethanol productivity. The performance of the reactor was further evaluated by ethanol volumetric productivity, yield and time for process completion and it was found that the variation of ethanol production and diffusion of the substrate in fermentation process are co-related with the stirrer speed and initial glucose concentration. It was also observed that the time difference for glucose consumption between free and immobilized cells (alginate and sponges) tends to increase by increasing the glucose concentration in the medium. We found that at higher stirrer speed (500 rpm) when using higher glucose concentration (200 g/l), ethanol volumetric productivity increased significantly in the sponge (85 g/l) as compared to alginate beads (79 g/l) and free cells (60 g/l). From the data obtained, it can be concluded that sponges are the best support material for attaining higher ethanol productivity. A stirred catalytic basket bioreactor with yeast cells immobilized in polyethylene sponge gives higher ethanol production at a higher glucose consumption rate, and this productivity is due to higher mixing efficiency and reduced external as well as internal mass transfer limitations. The potentials of the reactor rank it as a remarkable ethanol/fine-chemical production approach that needs further investigations.

Project description:We present the coupling of a jet-stirred reactor to detection by cw-CRDS in the near infrared and first results obtained during the oxidation of methane. The mixture is rapidly expanded from the jet-stirred reactor into a 80 cm-long cw-CRDS cell maintained at a the pressure around 1.33 kPa, thus freezing the reaction and decreasing pressure broadening of the absorption lines. Some stable species (CH4, H2O and CH2O) have been quantified through their well structured spectra around 1506 nm, while H2O2 and HO2 radicals could not be detected.

Project description:The modeling of the oxidation of methyl esters was investigated and the specific chemistry, which is due to the presence of the ester group in this class of molecules, is described. New reactions and rate parameters were defined and included in the software EXGAS for the automatic generation of kinetic mechanisms. Models generated with EXGAS were successfully validated against data from the literature (oxidation of methyl hexanoate and methyl heptanoate in a jet-stirred reactor) and a new set of experimental results for methyl decanoate. The oxidation of this last species was investigated in a jet-stirred reactor at temperatures from 500 to 1100 K, including the negative temperature coefficient region, under stoichiometric conditions, at a pressure of 1.06 bar and for a residence time of 1.5 s: more than 30 reaction products, including olefins, unsaturated esters, and cyclic ethers, were quantified and successfully simulated. Flow rate analysis showed that reactions pathways for the oxidation of methyl esters in the low-temperature range are similar to that of alkanes.

Project description:Application of advanced pyrolysis processes to agricultural waste for liquid production is gaining great attention, especially when it is applied to an economic crop like tobacco. In this work, tobacco residues were pyrolyzed in an ablative reactor under vacuum. The maximum bio-oil yield of 55% w/w was obtained at 600°C with a particle size of 10 mm at a blade rotation speed of 10 rpm. The physical properties of the products showed that the oil produced was of high quality with high carbon, hydrogen, and calorific value. Two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis results indicated that the oils were complex mixtures of alkanes, benzene derivative groups, and nitrogen-containing compounds. In addition, 13C NMR results confirmed that long aliphatic chain alkanes were evident. The alkanes were likely converted from furans that were decomposed from hemicelluloses. Ablative pyrolysis under vacuum proved to be a promising option for generating useful amount of bio-oils from tobacco residues.

Project description:Nitrite-oxidizing bacteria are vital players in the global nitrogen cycle that convert nitrite to nitrate during the 2nd step of nitrification. Within this functional guild, the genus Nitrospira is among the most widespread and phylogenetically and physiologically diverse nitrite oxidizers and its members drive nitrite oxidation in many natural and biotechnological ecosystems. Despite their ecological and biotechnological importance, our understanding of Nitrospira’s energy metabolism is still limited. The main bottleneck for a detailed biochemical characterization of Nitrospira is biomass production, since they are slow-growing organisms and fastidious to culture. In this study, we cultured Nitrospira moscoviensis in a continuous stirred tank reactor system (CSTR) allowing constant biomass harvesting. Additionally, this cultivation setup enabled accurate control of physicochemical parameters and thus avoided fluctuating levels of nitrite and accumulation of nitrate. We performed transcriptome analysis and confirmed constant gene expression profiles in the chemostat culture over a period of two weeks. The transcriptomic data supports the predicted core metabolism of N. moscoviensis, including the reductive TCA cycle as a CO2 fixation pathway, the novel bd-like oxidase as terminal oxidase and the octaheme nitrite reductase involved in nitrogen assimilation. Additionally, the expression of multiple copies of respiratory complexes suggests functional differentiation of these copies within the respiratory chain. Transcriptome analysis also suggests a soluble and a membrane-bound gamma subunit as part of the nitrite oxidoreductase (NXR), the enzyme catalyzing nitrite oxidation. Overall, the transcriptome data provided novel insights into the metabolism of Nitrospira supporting the genome-based prediction of key pathways. Moreover, the application of a CSTR to cultivate Nitrospira is an important foundation for future proteomic and biochemical characterizations, which are crucial for a better understanding of canonical and complete nitrifying microorganisms.
