Project description:The interest of the scientific community on methylammonium lead halide perovskites (MAPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) for hybrid organic-inorganic solar cells has grown exponentially since the first report in 2009. This fact is clearly justified by the very high efficiencies attainable (reaching 20% in lab scale devices) at a fraction of the cost of conventional photovoltaics. However, many problems must be solved before a market introduction of these devices can be envisaged. Perhaps the most important to be addressed is the lack of information regarding the thermal and thermodynamic stability of the materials towards decomposition, which are intrinsic properties of them and which can seriously limit or even exclude their use in real devices. In this work we present and discuss the results we obtained using non-ambient X-ray diffraction, Knudsen effusion-mass spectrometry (KEMS) and Knudsen effusion mass loss (KEML) techniques on MAPbCl3, MAPbBr3 and MAPbI3. The measurements demonstrate that all the materials decompose to the corresponding solid lead (II) halide and gaseous methylamine and hydrogen halide, and the decomposition is well detectable even at moderate temperatures (~60 °C). Our results suggest that these materials may be problematic for long term operation of solar devices.

Project description:A comprehensive microscopic description of thermally induced distortions in lead halide perovskites is crucial for their realistic applications, yet still unclear. Here, we quantify the effects of thermal activation in CsPbBr3 nanocrystals across length scales with atomic-level precision, and we provide a framework for the description of phase transitions therein, beyond the simplistic picture of unit-cell symmetry increase upon heating. The temperature increase significantly enhances the short-range structural distortions of the lead halide framework as a consequence of the phonon anharmonicity, which causes the excess free energy surface to change as a function of temperature. As a result, phase transitions can be rationalized via the soft-mode model, which also describes displacive thermal phase transitions in oxide perovskites. Our findings allow to reconcile temperature-dependent modifications of physical properties, such as changes in the optical band gap, that are incompatible with the perovskite time- and space-average structures.

Project description:The ability to control the response of metamaterial structures can facilitate the development of new terahertz devices, with applications in spectroscopy and communications. We demonstrate ultrafast frequency-agile terahertz metamaterial devices that enable such a capability, in which multiple perovskites can be patterned in each unit cell with micrometer-scale precision. To accomplish this, we developed a fabrication technique that shields already deposited perovskites from organic solvents, allowing for multiple perovskites to be patterned in close proximity. By doing so, we demonstrate tuning of the terahertz resonant response that is based not only on the optical pump fluence but also on the optical wavelength. Because polycrystalline perovskites have subnanosecond photocarrier recombination lifetimes, switching between resonances can occur on an ultrafast time scale. The use of multiple perovskites allows for new functionalities that are not possible using a single semiconducting material. For example, by patterning one perovskite in the gaps of split-ring resonators and bringing a uniform thin film of a second perovskite in close proximity, we demonstrate tuning of the resonant response using one optical wavelength and suppression of the resonance using a different optical wavelength. This general approach offers new capabilities for creating tunable terahertz devices.

Project description:Metal halide perovskite solar cells, despite achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE), need to demonstrate high stability prior to be considered for industrialization. Prolonged exposure to heat, light, and moisture is known to deteriorate the perovskite material owing to the breakdown of the crystal structure into its non-photoactive components. In this study, we show that by combining the organic ligand 1-naphthylmethylammoinium iodide (NMAI) with methylammonium (MA) to form a mixed dimensional (NMA)2(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 perovskite the optical, crystallographic and morphological properties of the newly formed mixed dimensional perovskite films under thermal ageing can be retained. Indeed, under thermal ageing at 85?°C, the best performing (NMA)2(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 perovskites films show a stable morphology, a low PbI2 formation rate and a significantly reduced variation of both MA-specific vibrational modes and fluorescence lifetimes as compared to the pristine MAPbI3 films. These results highlight the role of the bulky NMA+ organic cation in mixed dimensional perovskites to both inhibit the MA+ diffusion and reduce the material defects, which act as non-radiative recombination centres. As a result, the thermal stability of metal halide perovskites has been substantially improved.

Project description:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite is an outstanding semiconductor for photovoltaics. One of its intriguing peculiarities is that the band gap of this perovskite increases with increasing lattice temperature. Despite the presence of various thermally accessible phonon modes in this soft material, the understanding of how precisely these phonons affect macroscopic material properties and lead to the peculiar temperature dependence of the band gap has remained elusive. Here, we report a strong coupling of a single phonon mode at the frequency of ~ 1 THz to the optical band gap by monitoring the transient band edge absorption after ultrafast resonant THz phonon excitation. Excitation of the 1 THz phonon causes a blue shift of the band gap over the temperature range of 185 ~ 300 K. Our results uncover the mode-specific coupling between one phonon and the optical properties, which contributes to the temperature dependence of the gap in the tetragonal phase.Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite, a promising material for efficient photovoltaics, shows a unique temperature dependence of its optical properties. Kim et al. quantify the coupling between the optical gap and a lattice phonon at 1 THz, which favorably contributes to the thermal variation of the gap.

Project description:Halide perovskites possess enormous potential for various optoelectronic applications. Presently, a clear understanding of the interplay between the lattice and electronic effects is still elusive. Specifically, the weakly absorbing tail states and dual emission from perovskites are not satisfactorily described by existing theories based on the Urbach tail and reabsorption effect. Herein, through temperature-dependent and time-resolved spectroscopy on metal halide perovskite single crystals with organic or inorganic A-site cations, we confirm the existence of indirect tail states below the direct transition edge to arise from a dynamical Rashba splitting effect, caused by the PbBr6 octahedral thermal polar distortions at elevated temperatures. This dynamic effect is distinct from the static Rashba splitting effect, caused by non-spherical A-site cations or surface induced lattice distortions. Our findings shed fresh perspectives on the electronic-lattice relations paramount for the design and optimization of emergent perovskites, revealing broad implications for light harvesting/photo-detection and light emission/lasing applications.

Project description:Mixed-cation and mixed-halide lead halide perovskites show great potential for their application in photovoltaics. Many of the high-performance compositions are made of cesium, formamidinium, lead, iodine, and bromine. However, incorporating bromine in iodine-rich compositions and its effects on the thermal stability of the perovskite structure has not been thoroughly studied. In this work, we study how replacing iodine with bromine in the state-of-the-art Cs0.17FA0.83PbI3 perovskite composition leads to different dynamics in the phase transformations as a function of temperature. Through a combination of structural characterization, cathodoluminescence mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, we reveal that the incorporation of bromine reduces the thermodynamic phase stability of the films and shifts the products of phase transformations. Our results suggest that bromine-driven vacancy formation during high temperature exposure leads to irreversible transformations into PbI2, whereas materials with only iodine go through transformations into hexagonal polytypes, such as the 4H-FAPbI3 phase. This work sheds light on the structural impacts of adding bromine on thermodynamic phase stability and provides new insights into the importance of understanding the complexity of phase transformations and secondary phases in mixed-cation and mixed-halide systems.

Project description:We present a Raman study on the phase transitions of organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite materials, CH₃NH₃PbX₃ (X = I, Br), which are used as solar cells with high power conversion efficiency. The temperature dependence of the Raman bands of CH₃NH₃PbX₃ (X = I, Br) was measured in the temperature ranges of 290 to 100 K for CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ and 340 to 110 K for CH₃NH₃PbI₃. Broad ν₁ bands at ~326 cm-1 for MAPbBr₃ and at ~240 cm-1 for MAPbI₃ were assigned to the MA⁻PbX₃ cage vibrations. These bands exhibited anomalous temperature dependence, which was attributable to motional narrowing originating from fast changes between the orientational states of CH₃NH₃⁺ in the cage. Phase transitions were characterized by changes in the bandwidths and peak positions of the MA⁻cage vibration and some bands associated with the NH₃⁺ group.

Project description:Direct piezoelectric force microscopy (DPFM) is employed to examine whether or not lead halide perovskites exhibit ferroelectricity. Compared to conventional piezoelectric force microscopy, DPFM is a novel technique capable of measuring piezoelectricity directly. This fact is fundamental to be able to examine the existence of ferroelectricity in lead halide perovskites, an issue that has been under debate for several years. DPFM is used to detect the current signals, i.e. changes in the charge distribution under the influence of the scan direction and applied force of the atomic force microscope (AFM) tip in contact mode. For comparison, (i) we use DPFM on lead halide perovskites and well-known ferroelectric materials (i.e. periodically poled lithium niobate and lead zirconate titanate); and (ii) we conduct parallel experiments on MAPbI3 films of different grain sizes, film thicknesses, substrates, and textures using DPFM as well as piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) and electrostatic force microscopy (EFM). In contrast to previous work that claimed there were ferroelectric domains in MAPbI3 perovskite films, our work shows that the studied perovskite films Cs0.05(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 and MAPbI3 are ferroelectricity-free. The observed current profiles of lead halide perovskites possibly originate from ion migration that happens under an applied electrical bias and in strained samples under mechanical stress. This work provides a deeper understanding of the fundamental physical properties of the organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites and solves a longstanding dispute about their non-ferroelectric character: an issue of high relevance for optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications.

Project description:The Rashba splitting in hybrid organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites (HOIP) is particularly promising and yet controversial, due to questions surrounding the presence or absence of inversion symmetry. Here we utilize two-photon absorption spectroscopy to study inversion symmetry breaking in different phases of these materials. This is an all-optical technique to observe and quantify the Rashba effect as it probes the bulk of the materials. In particular, we measure two-photon excitation spectra of the photoluminescence in 2D, 3D, and anionic mixed HOIP crystals, and show that an additional band above, but close to the optical gap is the signature of new two-photon transition channels that originate from the Rashba splitting. The inversion symmetry breaking is believed to arise from ionic impurities that induce local electric fields. The observation of the Rashba splitting in the bulk of HOIP has significant implications for the understanding of their spintronic and optoelectronic device properties.
