In situ assembled ZIF superstructures via an emulsion-free soft-templating approach.

ABSTRACT: Assembling well-defined MOF superstructures remains challenging as it requires easily removable hard templates or readily available immiscible solutions for an emulsion-based soft-template approach. In this work, a single-step emulsion-free soft templating approach is reported to spontaneously prepare hollow ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 colloidosomes with no further purification. These superstructures can load different enzymes regardless of the size and charge with a high encapsulation efficiency of 99%. We envisage that this work will expand the repertoires of MOF superstructures by the judicious selection of precursors and the reaction medium.

Project description:The precise structural control is known for self-assembly into closed spherical structures (e.g., micelles), but similar control of open structures is much more challenging. Inspired by natural tobacco mosaic virus, we present the use of a rigid-rod template to control the size of a one-dimensional self-assembly. We believe that this strategy is novel for organic self-assembly and should provide a general approach to controlling size and dimension.

Well-defined porous membranes for robust omniphobic surfaces via microfluidic emulsion templating.

Project description:Durability is a long-standing challenge in designing liquid-repellent surfaces. A high-performance omniphobic surface must robustly repel liquids, while maintaining mechanical/chemical stability. However, liquid repellency and mechanical durability are generally mutually exclusive properties for many omniphobic surfaces-improving one performance inevitably results in decreased performance in another. Here we report well-defined porous membranes for durable omniphobic surfaces inspired by the springtail cuticle. The omniphobicity is shown via an amphiphilic material micro-textured with re-entrant surface morphology; the mechanical durability arises from the interconnected microstructures. The innovative fabrication method-termed microfluidic emulsion templating-is facile, cost-effective, scalable and can precisely engineer the structural topographies. The robust omniphobic surface is expected to open up new avenues for diverse applications due to its mechanical and chemical robustness, transparency, reversible Cassie-Wenzel transition, transferability, flexibility and stretchability.

Self-Assembled Mucin-Containing Microcarriers via Hard Templating on CaCO₃ Crystals.

Project description:Porous vaterite crystals of CaCO₃ are extensively used for the fabrication of self-assembled polymer-based microparticles (capsules, beads, etc.) utilized for drug delivery and controlled release. The nature of the polymer used plays a crucial role and discovery of new perspective biopolymers is essential to assemble microparticles with desired characteristics, such as biocompatibility, drug loading efficiency/capacity, release rate, and stability. Glycoprotein mucin is tested here as a good candidate to assemble the microparticles because of high charge due to sialic acids, mucoadhesive properties, and a tendency to self-assemble, forming gels. Mucin loading into the crystals via co-synthesis is twice as effective as via adsorption into preformed crystals. Desialylated mucin has weaker binding to the crystals most probably due to electrostatic interactions between sialic acids and calcium ions on the crystal surface. Improved loading of low-molecular-weight inhibitor aprotinin into the mucin-containing crystals is demonstrated. Multilayer capsules (mucin/protamine)₃ have been made by the layer-by-layer self-assembly. Interestingly, the deposition of single mucin layers (mucin/water)₃ has also been proven, however, the capsules were unstable, most probably due to additional (to hydrogen bonding) electrostatic interactions in the case of the two polymers used. Finally, approaches to load biologically-active compounds (BACs) into the mucin-containing microparticles are discussed.

Logical rotation of non-separable states via uniformly self-assembled chiral superstructures.

Project description:The next generation of high-capacity, multi-task optical informatics requires sophisticated manipulation of multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs) of light, especially when they are coupled in a non-separable way. Vector beam, as a typical non-separable state between the spin and orbital angular momentum DoFs, mathematically akin to entangled qubits, has inspired multifarious theories and applications in both quantum and classical regimes. Although qubit rotation is a vital and ubiquitous operation in quantum informatics, its classical analogue is rarely studied. Here, we demonstrate the logical rotation of vectorial non-separable states via the uniform self-assembled chiral superstructures, with favorable controllability, high compactness and exemption from formidable alignment. Photonic band engineering of such 1D chiral photonic crystal renders the incident-angle-dependent evolution of the spatially-variant polarizations. The logical rotation angle of a non-separable state can be tuned in a wide range over 4π by this single homogeneous device, flexibly providing a set of distinguished logic gates. Potential applications, including angular motion tracking and proof-of-principle logic network, are demonstrated by specific configuration. This work brings important insight into soft matter photonics and present an elegant strategy to harness high-dimensional photonic states.

Highly-Controlled Soft-Templating Synthesis of Hollow ZIF-8 Nanospheres for Selective CO2 Separation and Storage.

Project description:Global warming is an ever-rising environmental concern, and carbon dioxide (CO2) is among its major causes. Different technologies, including adsorption, cryogenic separation, and sequestration, have been developed for CO2 separation and storage/utilization. Among these, carbon capture using nano-adsorbents has the advantages of excellent CO2 separation and storage performance as well as superior heat- and mass-transfer characteristics due to their large surface area and pore volume. In this work, an environmentally friendly, facile, bottom-up synthesis of ZIF-8 hollow nanospheres (with reduced chemical consumption) was developed for selective CO2 separation and storage. During this soft-templating synthesis, a combined effect of ultra-sonication and low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis showed better control over an oil-in-water microemulsion formation and the subsequent growth of large-surface-area hollow ZIF-8 nanospheres having excellent particle size distribution. Systematic studies on the synthesis parameters were also performed to achieve fine-tuning of the ZIF-8 crystallinity, hollow structures, and sphere size. The optimized hollow ZIF-8 nanosphere sample having uniform size distribution exhibited remarkable CO2 adsorption capability (∼2.24 mmol g-1 at 0 °C and 1.75 bar), a CO2/N2 separation selectivity of 12.15, a good CO2 storage capacity (1.5-1.75 wt %), and an excellent cyclic adsorption/desorption performance (up to four CO2 adsorption/desorption cycles) at 25 °C. In addition, the samples showed exceptional structural stability with only ∼15% of overall weight loss up to 600 °C under a nitrogen environment. Therefore, the hollow ZIF-8 nanospheres as well as their highly controlled soft-templating synthesis method reported in this work are useful in the course of the development of nanomaterials with optimized properties for future CO2 capture technologies.

Reconfigurable Mechanical Anisotropy in Self-Assembled Magnetic Superstructures.

Project description:Enhancement of mechanical properties in self-assembled superstructures of magnetic nanoparticles is a new emerging aspect of their remarkable collective behavior. However, how magnetic interactions modulate mechanical properties is, to date, not fully understood. Through a comprehensive Monte Carlo investigation, this study demonstrates how the mechanical properties of self-assembled magnetic nanocubes can be controlled intrinsically by the nanoparticle magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MA), as well as by the superstructure shape anisotropy, without any need for changes in structural design (i.e., nanoparticle size, shape, and packing arrangement). A low MA-to-dipolar energy ratio, as found in iron oxide and permalloy systems, favors isotropic mechanical superstructure stabilization, whereas a high ratio yields magnetically blocked nanoparticle macrospins which can give rise to metastable superferromagnetism, as expected in cobalt ferrite simple cubic supercrystals. Such full parallel alignment of the particle moments is shown to induce mechanical anisotropy, where the superior high-strength axis can be remotely reconfigured by means of an applied magnetic field. The new concepts developed here pave the way for the experimental realization of smart magneto-micromechanical systems (based, e.g., on the permanent super-magnetostriction effect illustrated here) and inspire new design rules for applied functional materials.

Facile construction of Mo-based nanozyme system via ZIF-8 templating with enhanced catalytic efficiency and antibacterial performance.

Project description:Although Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) shows significant promise in chemodynamic therapy of bacterial infections due to its large specific surface area and enzyme-like activity, it still faces a considerable gap compared to natural enzymes. The dependency on low pH and high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide ((H2O2) is a major factor limiting the clinical progress of nanozymes. Single-atom nanozymes (SA-zyme), which exhibit superior catalytic performance, are expected to overcome this limitation. In this study, we used ZIF-8 as a template to prepare structurally regular molybdenum-based single-atom nanozymes (Mo-zyme) by coordinating molybdenum atoms with nitrogen atoms within the zeolitic imidazolate framework and evaporating the zinc element at high temperatures. The cascade catalytic performance of the nanodrugs was enhanced by loading glucose oxidase (GOx) and encapsulating it with a hyaluronic acid (HA) layer to form a composite (Mo/GOx@HA). Upon contact with hyaluronidase from bacteria in infected tissues, the cascade reaction is triggered, resulting in the degradation of the HA shell, and releasing the encapsulated GOx. Once exposed, GOx catalyzes the oxidation of glucose into gluconic acid, resulting in a localized decrease in pH and continuous production of H2O2. The combination of lowered pH and increased H2O2 concentration significantly amplifies the catalytic activity of the Mo-zyme. This enhanced activity facilitates the in situ generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) on the bacterial surface, leading to effective and efficient bacterial eradication. Wound infection treatment has demonstrated that the as-prepared Mo/GOx@HA exhibits excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. This work provided a promising enzymatic cascade reaction nanoplatform for the treatment of bacteria infected wounds.

A novel technique for in situ uniaxial tests of self-assembled soft biomaterials.

Project description:We introduce a novel method to form 3D biomimetic tissues from a droplet of a cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) mixture on a sensor stage and to quantify tissue force and stiffness as a function of time under optical microscopes. This method exploits advances in micro-nano fabrication and capillarity for self-assembly and self-alignment of tissues on the stage. It allows simultaneous investigation of the microstructure of the tissue in situ while its mechanical response is quantified, thus linking tissue biophysics with physiology and revealing structural-functional properties of 3D tissues. We demonstrate the functionality of the stage by studying the mechanical behavior of different cell-collagen mixtures under mechanical, chemical and electrical stimulation. This includes force evolution in cell-free collagen during curing, myotubes differentiated from muscle cell-collagen/Matrigel ECM subjected to electrical stimulation, and fibroblast-collagen tissue subjected to cancer cell conditioned media (CM) and a Rho-kinase inhibitor, Y27632. Muscle contraction decreases with increasing frequency of electrical stimulation, and fibroblasts respond to CM by increasing contractility for a short time and completely relax in the presence of Y27632 but restore force with Y27632 washout.

Superhydrophobic and Compressible Silica-polyHIPE Covalently Bonded Porous Networks via Emulsion Templating for Oil Spill Cleanup and Recovery.

Project description:We synthesize porous polyHIPE networks with silanol functionalities in the polyHIPE backbone. These silanol functionalities are used for covalent bonding with silica aerogels embedded in the polyHIPE. Covalent bonding between silica and polyHIPE networks are confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Silica aerogels covalently bonded with polyHIPE network show macroporous and mesoporous morphologies and possess excellent properties like high bendability, high elasticity, superhydrophobicity (~160°), low density (~0.128 g/cm3), and low thermal conductivity (~0.045 W/m·K). Oil absorption from water/oil mixtures and recovery of the absorbed oil (by squeezing) from flexible silica-polyHIPE networks is studied. The silica-polyHIPE is shown to absorb crude oil ~16-times its own weight and can be reused multiple times after recovery. Hence, such materials are very important for oil spill cleanup applications from aqueous systems.

Property and Stability of Astaxanthin Emulsion Based on Pickering Emulsion Templating with Zein and Sodium Alginate as Stabilizer.

Project description:Astaxanthin loaded Pickering emulsion with zein/sodium alginate (SA) as a stabilizer (named as APEs) was developed, and its structure and stability were characterized. The encapsulation efficiency of astaxanthin (Asta) in APEs was up to 86.7 ± 3.8%, with a mean particle size of 4.763 μm. Freeze-dried APEs showed particles stacked together under scanning electronic microscope; whereas dispersed spherical nanoparticles were observed in APEs dilution under transmission electron microscope images. Confocal laser scanning microscope images indicated that zein particles loaded with Asta were aggregated with SA coating. X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectra results showed that intermolecular hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic effect were involved in APEs formation. APEs demonstrated non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior and fit well to the Cross model. Compared to bare Asta extract, APEs maintained high Asta retention and antioxidant activity when heated from 50 to 10 °C. APEs showed different stability at pH (3.0-11.0) and Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cu2+ and Fe2+ conditions by visual, zeta potential and polydispersity index measurements. Additionally, the first order kinetics fit well to describe APEs degradation at pH 3.0 to 9.0, Na+, and K+ conditions. Our results suggest the potential application of Asta-loaded Pickering emulsion in food systems as a fortified additive.
