Entropy engineering promotes thermoelectric performance in p-type chalcogenides.

ABSTRACT: We demonstrate that the thermoelectric properties of p-type chalcogenides can be effectively improved by band convergence and hierarchical structure based on a high-entropy-stabilized matrix. The band convergence is due to the decreased light and heavy band energy offsets by alloying Cd for an enhanced Seebeck coefficient and electric transport property. Moreover, the hierarchical structure manipulated by entropy engineering introduces all-scale scattering sources for heat-carrying phonons resulting in a very low lattice thermal conductivity. Consequently, a peak zT of 2.0 at 900 K for p-type chalcogenides and a high experimental conversion efficiency of 12% at ΔT = 506 K for the fabricated segmented modules are achieved. This work provides an entropy strategy to form all-scale hierarchical structures employing high-entropy-stabilized matrix. This work will promote real applications of low-cost thermoelectric materials.

Designing high-performance layered thermoelectric materials through orbital engineering.

Project description:Thermoelectric technology, which possesses potential application in recycling industrial waste heat as energy, calls for novel high-performance materials. The systematic exploration of novel thermoelectric materials with excellent electronic transport properties is severely hindered by limited insight into the underlying bonding orbitals of atomic structures. Here we propose a simple yet successful strategy to discover and design high-performance layered thermoelectric materials through minimizing the crystal field splitting energy of orbitals to realize high orbital degeneracy. The approach naturally leads to design maps for optimizing the thermoelectric power factor through forming solid solutions and biaxial strain. Using this approach, we predict a series of potential thermoelectric candidates from layered CaAl2Si2-type Zintl compounds. Several of them contain nontoxic, low-cost and earth-abundant elements. Moreover, the approach can be extended to several other non-cubic materials, thereby substantially accelerating the screening and design of new thermoelectric materials.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance by Surface Engineering in SnTe-PbS Nanocomposites.

Project description:Thermoelectric materials enable the direct conversion between heat and electricity. SnTe is a promising candidate due to its high charge transport performance. Here, we prepared SnTe nanocomposites by employing an aqueous method to synthetize SnTe nanoparticles (NP), followed by a unique surface treatment prior NP consolidation. This synthetic approach allowed optimizing the charge and phonon transport synergistically. The novelty of this strategy was the use of a soluble PbS molecular complex prepared using a thiol-amine solvent mixture that upon blending is adsorbed on the SnTe NP surface. Upon consolidation with spark plasma sintering, SnTe-PbS nanocomposite is formed. The presence of PbS complexes significantly compensates for the Sn vacancy and increases the average grain size of the nanocomposite, thus improving the carrier mobility. Moreover, lattice thermal conductivity is also reduced by the Pb and S-induced mass and strain fluctuation. As a result, an enhanced ZT of ca. 0.8 is reached at 873 K. Our finding provides a novel strategy to conduct rational surface treatment on NP-based thermoelectrics.

In-situ resonant band engineering of solution-processed semiconductors generates high performance n-type thermoelectric nano-inks.

Project description:Thermoelectric devices possess enormous potential to reshape the global energy landscape by converting waste heat into electricity, yet their commercial implementation has been limited by their high cost to output power ratio. No single "champion" thermoelectric material exists due to a broad range of material-dependent thermal and electrical property optimization challenges. While the advent of nanostructuring provided a general design paradigm for reducing material thermal conductivities, there exists no analogous strategy for homogeneous, precise doping of materials. Here, we demonstrate a nanoscale interface-engineering approach that harnesses the large chemically accessible surface areas of nanomaterials to yield massive, finely-controlled, and stable changes in the Seebeck coefficient, switching a poor nonconventional p-type thermoelectric material, tellurium, into a robust n-type material exhibiting stable properties over months of testing. These remodeled, n-type nanowires display extremely high power factors (~500?µW?m-1K-2) that are orders of magnitude higher than their bulk p-type counterparts.

Hierarchical Architecturing for Layered Thermoelectric Sulfides and Chalcogenides.

Project description:Sulfides are promising candidates for environment-friendly and cost-effective thermoelectric materials. In this article, we review the recent progress in all-length-scale hierarchical architecturing for sulfides and chalcogenides, highlighting the key strategies used to enhance their thermoelectric performance. We primarily focus on TiS₂-based layered sulfides, misfit layered sulfides, homologous chalcogenides, accordion-like layered Sn chalcogenides, and thermoelectric minerals. CS₂ sulfurization is an appropriate method for preparing sulfide thermoelectric materials. At the atomic scale, the intercalation of guest atoms/layers into host crystal layers, crystal-structural evolution enabled by the homologous series, and low-energy atomic vibration effectively scatter phonons, resulting in a reduced lattice thermal conductivity. At the nanoscale, stacking faults further reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. At the microscale, the highly oriented microtexture allows high carrier mobility in the in-plane direction, leading to a high thermoelectric power factor.

Defect Engineering in Solution-Processed Polycrystalline SnSe Leads to High Thermoelectric Performance.

Project description:SnSe has emerged as one of the most promising materials for thermoelectric energy conversion due to its extraordinary performance in its single-crystal form and its low-cost constituent elements. However, to achieve an economic impact, the polycrystalline counterpart needs to replicate the performance of the single crystal. Herein, we optimize the thermoelectric performance of polycrystalline SnSe produced by consolidating solution-processed and surface-engineered SnSe particles. In particular, the SnSe particles are coated with CdSe molecular complexes that crystallize during the sintering process, forming CdSe nanoparticles. The presence of CdSe nanoparticles inhibits SnSe grain growth during the consolidation step due to Zener pinning, yielding a material with a high density of grain boundaries. Moreover, the resulting SnSe-CdSe nanocomposites present a large number of defects at different length scales, which significantly reduce the thermal conductivity. The produced SnSe-CdSe nanocomposites exhibit thermoelectric figures of merit up to 2.2 at 786 K, which is among the highest reported for solution-processed SnSe.

Polaron interfacial entropy as a route to high thermoelectric performance in DAE-doped PEDOT:PSS films.

Project description:Enhancing the thermoelectric transport properties of conductive polymer materials has been a long-term challenge, in spite of the success seen with molecular doping strategies. However, the strong coupling between the thermopower and the electrical conductivity limits thermoelectric performance. Here, we use polaron interfacial occupied entropy engineering to break through this intercoupling for a PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(4-styrenesulfonate)) thin film by using photochromic diarylethene (DAE) dopants coupled with UV-light modulation. With a 10-fold enhancement of the thermopower from 13.5 μV K-1 to 135.4 μV K-1 and almost unchanged electrical conductivity, the DAE-doped PEDOT:PSS thin film achieved an extremely high power factor of 521.28 μW m-1 K-2 from an original value of 6.78 μW m-1 K-2. The thermopower was positively correlated with the UV-light intensity but decreased with increasing temperature, indicating resonant coupling between the planar closed DAE molecule and PEDOT. Both the experiments and theoretical calculations consistently confirmed the formation of an interface state due to this resonant coupling. Interfacial entropy engineering of polarons could play a critical role in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of the organic film.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of In2O3-based ceramics via Nanostructuring and Point Defect Engineering.

Project description:The issue of how to improve the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) in oxide semiconductors has been challenging for more than 20 years. In this work, we report an effective path to substantial reduction in thermal conductivity and increment in carrier concentration, and thus a remarkable enhancement in the ZT value is achieved. The ZT value of In2O3 system was enhanced 4-fold by nanostructuing (nano-grains and nano-inclusions) and point defect engineering. The introduction of point defects in In2O3 results in a glass-like thermal conductivity. The lattice thermal conductivity could be reduced by 60%, and extraordinary low lattice thermal conductivity (1.2 W m(-1) K(-1) @ 973 K) below the amorphous limit was achieved. Our work paves a path for enhancing the ZT in oxides by both the nanosturcturing and the point defect engineering for better phonon-glasses and electron-crystal (PGEC) materials.

Precursor-Led Grain Boundary Engineering for Superior Thermoelectric Performance in Niobium Strontium Titanate.

Project description:We present a novel method to significantly enhance the thermoelectric performance of ceramics in the model system SrTi0.85Nb0.15O3 through the use of the precursor ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (0.5-2% w/w additions). After sintering the precursor-infused green body at 1700 K for 24 h in 5% H2/Ar, single-crystal-like electron transport behavior developed with electrical conductivity reaching ∼3000 S/cm at ∼300 K, almost a magnitude higher than that in the control sample. During processing, the precursor transformed into MoS2, then into MoOx, and finally into Mo particles. This limited grain growth promoted secondary phase generation but importantly helped to reduce the grain boundary barriers. Samples prepared with additions of the precursor exhibited vastly increased electrical conductivity, without significant impact on Seebeck coefficients giving rise to high power factor values of 1760 μW/mK2 at ∼300 K and a maximum thermoelectric figure-of-merit zT of 0.24 at 823 K. This processing strategy provides a simple method to achieve high charge mobility in polycrystalline titanate and related materials and with the potential to create "phonon-glass-electron-crystal" oxide thermoelectric materials.

Highly Textured N-Type SnSe Polycrystals with Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance.

Project description:Thermoelectric materials, which directly convert heat into electricity based on the Seebeck effects, have long been investigated for use in semiconductor refrigeration or waste heat recovery. Among them, SnSe has attracted significant attention due to its promising performance in both p-type and n-type crystals; in particular, a higher out-of-plane ZT value could be achieved in n-type SnSe due to its 3D charge and 2D phonon transports. In this work, the thermoelectric transport properties of n-type polycrystalline SnSe were investigated with an emphasis on the out-of-plane transport through producing textural microstructure. The textures were fabricated using mechanical alloying and repeated spark plasma sintering (SPS), as a kind of hot pressing, aimed at producing strong anisotropic transports in n-type polycrystalline SnSe as that in crystalline SnSe. Results show that the lowest thermal conductivity of 0.36 Wm-1 K-1 was obtained at 783 K in perpendicular to texture direction. Interestingly, the electrical transport properties are less anisotropic and even nearly isotropic, and the power factors reach 681.3 μWm-1 K-2 at 783 K along both parallel and perpendicular directions. The combination of large isotropic power factor and low anisotropic thermal conductivity leads to a maximum ZT of 1.5 at 783 K. The high performance elucidates the outstanding electrical and thermal transport behaviors in n-type polycrystalline SnSe, and a higher thermoelectric performance can be expected with future optimizing texture in n-type polycrystalline SnSe.

Layered Tin Chalcogenides SnS and SnSe: Lattice Thermal Conductivity Benchmarks and Thermoelectric Figure of Merit.

Project description:Tin sulfide (SnS) and tin selenide (SnSe) are attractive materials for thermoelectric conversion applications. Favorable small band gap, high carrier mobility, large Seebeck coefficient, and remarkably low lattice thermal conductivity are a consequence of their anisotropic crystal structure of symmetry Pnma , made of corrugated, black phosphorus-like layers. Their internal lattice dynamics combined with chemical bond softening in going from SnS to SnSe make for subtle effects on lattice thermal conductivity. Reliable prediction of phonon transport for these materials must therefore include many-body effects. Using first principles methods and a transferable tight-binding potential for frozen phonon calculations, here, we investigate the evolution of thermal lattice conductivity and thermoelectric figure of merit in Pnma -SnS and -SnSe, also including the high-temperature Cmcm -SnS phase. We show how thermal conductivity lowering in SnS at higher temperatures is largely due to dynamic phonon softening ahead of the Pnma - Cmcm structural phase transition. SnS becomes more similar to SnSe in its lifetime and mean free path profiles as it approaches its high-temperature Cmcm phase. The latter nonetheless intrinsically constraints phonon group velocity modules, preventing SnS to overtake SnSe. Our analysis provides important insights and computational benchmarks for optimization of thermoelectric materials via a more efficient computational strategy compared to previous ab initio attempts, one that can be easily transferred to larger systems for further thermoelectric materials nanoengineering. The good description of anharmonicity at higher temperatures inherent to the tight-binding potential yields calculated lattice conductivity values that are in very good agreement with experiments.
