Pedestrian attribute recognition using two-branch trainable Gabor wavelets network.

ABSTRACT: Keeping an eye on pedestrians as they navigate through a scene, surveillance cameras are everywhere. With this context, our paper addresses the problem of pedestrian attribute recognition (PAR). This problem entails recognizing attributes such as age-group, clothing style, accessories, footwear style etc. This multi-label problem is extremely challenging even for human observers and has rightly garnered attention from the computer vision community. Towards a solution to this problem, in this paper, we adopt trainable Gabor wavelets (TGW) layers and cascade them with a convolution neural network (CNN). Whereas other researchers are using fixed Gabor filters with the CNN, the proposed layers are learnable and adapt to the dataset for a better recognition. We propose a two-branch neural network where mixed layers, a combination of the TGW and convolutional layers, make up the building block of our deep neural network. We test our method on twoo challenging publicly available datasets and compare our results with state of the art.

Skin cancer classification leveraging multi-directional compact convolutional neural network ensembles and gabor wavelets.

Project description:Skin cancer (SC) is an important medical condition that necessitates prompt identification to ensure timely treatment. Although visual evaluation by dermatologists is considered the most reliable method, its efficacy is subjective and laborious. Deep learning-based computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) platforms have become valuable tools for supporting dermatologists. Nevertheless, current CAD tools frequently depend on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with huge amounts of deep layers and hyperparameters, single CNN model methodologies, large feature space, and exclusively utilise spatial image information, which restricts their effectiveness. This study presents SCaLiNG, an innovative CAD tool specifically developed to address and surpass these constraints. SCaLiNG leverages a collection of three compact CNNs and Gabor Wavelets (GW) to acquire a comprehensive feature vector consisting of spatial-textural-frequency attributes. SCaLiNG gathers a wide range of image details by breaking down these photos into multiple directional sub-bands using GW, and then learning several CNNs using those sub-bands and the original picture. SCaLiNG also combines attributes taken from various CNNs trained with the actual images and subbands derived from GW. This fusion process correspondingly improves diagnostic accuracy due to the thorough representation of attributes. Furthermore, SCaLiNG applies a feature selection approach which further enhances the model's performance by choosing the most distinguishing features. Experimental findings indicate that SCaLiNG maintains a classification accuracy of 0.9170 in categorising SC subcategories, surpassing conventional single-CNN models. The outstanding performance of SCaLiNG underlines its ability to aid dermatologists in swiftly and precisely recognising and classifying SC, thereby enhancing patient outcomes.

A novel modulation classification approach using Gabor filter network.

Project description:A Gabor filter network based approach is used for feature extraction and classification of digital modulated signals by adaptively tuning the parameters of Gabor filter network. Modulation classification of digitally modulated signals is done under the influence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The modulations considered for the classification purpose are PSK 2 to 64, FSK 2 to 64, and QAM 4 to 64. The Gabor filter network uses the network structure of two layers; the first layer which is input layer constitutes the adaptive feature extraction part and the second layer constitutes the signal classification part. The Gabor atom parameters are tuned using Delta rule and updating of weights of Gabor filter using least mean square (LMS) algorithm. The simulation results show that proposed novel modulation classification algorithm has high classification accuracy at low signal to noise ratio (SNR) on AWGN channel.

Thermally trainable dual network hydrogels.

Project description:Inspired by biological systems, trainable responsive materials have received burgeoning research interests for future adaptive and intelligent material systems. However, the trainable materials to date typically cannot perform active work, and the training allows only one direction of functionality change. Here, we demonstrate thermally trainable hydrogel systems consisting of two thermoresponsive polymers, where the volumetric response of the system upon phase transitions enhances or decreases through a training process above certain threshold temperature. Positive or negative training of the thermally induced deformations can be achieved, depending on the network design. Importantly, softening, stiffening, or toughening of the hydrogel can be achieved by the training process. We demonstrate trainable hydrogel actuators capable of performing increased active work or implementing an initially impossible task. The reported dual network hydrogels provide a new training strategy that can be leveraged for bio-inspired soft systems such as adaptive artificial muscles or soft robotics.

Gabor filter for enhanced recognition of assisted turning events.

Project description:Nursing facility residents at high risk for pressure ulcers are turned in bed by staff at regular intervals. In an ongoing large, multi-site randomized clinical trial (RCT) the impacts of 2, 3, and 4 hour turning intervals are being studied on pressure ulcer outcomes. In the RCT, it is necessary to objectively confirm the reported times of assisted turning by certified nurse assistants using activity data. Activity peaks in Gaussian-smoothed activity data were unable to confirm all turning events in a supporting pilot study with observer notes of assisted turns. A new technique is presented using one-dimensional Gabor filters that enhances activity peaks due to turning events and diminishes the signal during extended activity. As a result, all assisted turns in the pilot study were detected and confirmed. Moreover, the dependence of detection sensitivity on decision threshold is lowered in this method.

Birdsong Denoising Using Wavelets.

Project description:Automatic recording of birdsong is becoming the preferred way to monitor and quantify bird populations worldwide. Programmable recorders allow recordings to be obtained at all times of day and year for extended periods of time. Consequently, there is a critical need for robust automated birdsong recognition. One prominent obstacle to achieving this is low signal to noise ratio in unattended recordings. Field recordings are often very noisy: birdsong is only one component in a recording, which also includes noise from the environment (such as wind and rain), other animals (including insects), and human-related activities, as well as noise from the recorder itself. We describe a method of denoising using a combination of the wavelet packet decomposition and band-pass or low-pass filtering, and present experiments that demonstrate an order of magnitude improvement in noise reduction over natural noisy bird recordings.

NetCellMatch: Multiscale Network-Based Matching of Cancer Cell Lines to Patients Using Graphical Wavelets.

Project description:Cancer cell lines serve as model in vitro systems for investigating therapeutic interventions. Recent advances in high-throughput genomic profiling have enabled the systematic comparison between cell lines and patient tumor samples. The highly interconnected nature of biological data, however, presents a challenge when mapping patient tumors to cell lines. Standard clustering methods can be particularly susceptible to the high level of noise present in these datasets and only output clusters at one unknown scale of the data. In light of these challenges, we present NetCellMatch, a robust framework for network-based matching of cell lines to patient tumors. NetCellMatch first constructs a global network across all cell line-patient samples using their genomic similarity. Then, a multi-scale community detection algorithm integrates information across topologically meaningful (clustering) scales to obtain Network-Based Matching Scores (NBMS). NBMS are measures of cluster robustness which map patient tumors to cell lines. We use NBMS to determine representative "avatar" cell lines for subgroups of patients. We apply NetCellMatch to reverse-phase protein array data obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas for patients and the MD Anderson Cell Line Project for cell lines. Along with avatar cell line identification, we evaluate connectivity patterns for breast, lung, and colon cancer and explore the proteomic profiles of avatars and their corresponding top matching patients. Our results demonstrate our framework's ability to identify both patient-cell line matches and potential proteomic drivers of similarity. Our methods are general and can be easily adapted to other'omic datasets.

A facial expression recognition network based on attention double branch enhanced fusion.

Project description:The facial expression reflects a person's emotion, cognition, and even physiological or mental state to a large extent. It has important application value in medical treatment, business, criminal investigation, education, and human-computer interaction. Automatic facial expression recognition technology has become an important research topic in computer vision. To solve the problems of insufficient feature extraction, loss of local key information, and low accuracy in facial expression recognition, this article proposes a facial expression recognition network based on attention double branch enhanced fusion. Two parallel branches are used to capture global enhancement features and local attention semantics respectively, and the fusion and complementarity of global and local information is realized through decision-level fusion. The experimental results show that the features extracted by the network are made more complete by fusing and enhancing the global and local features. The proposed method achieves 89.41% and 88.84% expression recognition accuracy on the natural scene face expression datasets RAF-DB and FERPlus, respectively, which is an excellent performance compared with many current methods and demonstrates the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed network model.

Ear recognition based on Gabor features and KFDA.

Project description:We propose an ear recognition system based on 2D ear images which includes three stages: ear enrollment, feature extraction, and ear recognition. Ear enrollment includes ear detection and ear normalization. The ear detection approach based on improved Adaboost algorithm detects the ear part under complex background using two steps: offline cascaded classifier training and online ear detection. Then Active Shape Model is applied to segment the ear part and normalize all the ear images to the same size. For its eminent characteristics in spatial local feature extraction and orientation selection, Gabor filter based ear feature extraction is presented in this paper. Kernel Fisher Discriminant Analysis (KFDA) is then applied for dimension reduction of the high-dimensional Gabor features. Finally distance based classifier is applied for ear recognition. Experimental results of ear recognition on two datasets (USTB and UND datasets) and the performance of the ear authentication system show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Attribute pair-based visual recognition and memory.

Project description:BackgroundIn the human visual system, different attributes of an object, such as shape, color, and motion, are processed separately in different areas of the brain. This raises a fundamental question of how are these attributes integrated to produce a unified perception and a specific response. This "binding problem" is computationally difficult because all attributes are assumed to be bound together to form a single object representation. However, there is no firm evidence to confirm that such representations exist for general objects.Methodology/principal findingsHere we propose a paired-attribute model in which cognitive processes are based on multiple representations of paired attributes. In line with the model's prediction, we found that multiattribute stimuli can produce an illusory perception of a multiattribute object arising from erroneous integration of attribute pairs, implying that object recognition is based on parallel perception of paired attributes. Moreover, in a change-detection task, a feature change in a single attribute frequently caused an illusory perception of change in another attribute, suggesting that multiple pairs of attributes are stored in memory.Conclusions/significanceThe paired-attribute model can account for some novel illusions and controversial findings on binocular rivalry and short-term memory. Our results suggest that many cognitive processes are performed at the level of paired attributes rather than integrated objects, which greatly facilitates the binding problem and provides simpler solutions for it.

Tiling array data analysis: a multiscale approach using wavelets.

Project description:BackgroundTiling array data is hard to interpret due to noise. The wavelet transformation is a widely used technique in signal processing for elucidating the true signal from noisy data. Consequently, we attempted to denoise representative tiling array datasets for ChIP-chip experiments using wavelets. In doing this, we used specific wavelet basis functions, Coiflets, since their triangular shape closely resembles the expected profiles of true ChIP-chip peaks.ResultsIn our wavelet-transformed data, we observed that noise tends to be confined to small scales while the useful signal-of-interest spans multiple large scales. We were also able to show that wavelet coefficients due to non-specific cross-hybridization follow a log-normal distribution, and we used this fact in developing a thresholding procedure. In particular, wavelets allow one to set an unambiguous, absolute threshold, which has been hard to define in ChIP-chip experiments. One can set this threshold by requiring a similar confidence level at different length-scales of the transformed signal. We applied our algorithm to a number of representative ChIP-chip data sets, including those of Pol II and histone modifications, which have a diverse distribution of length-scales of biochemical activity, including some broad peaks.ConclusionsFinally, we benchmarked our method in comparison to other approaches for scoring ChIP-chip data using spike-ins on the ENCODE Nimblegen tiling array. This comparison demonstrated excellent performance, with wavelets getting the best overall score.
