Empirical evidence on the impact of urban overheating on building cooling and heating energy consumption.

ABSTRACT: A primary contributor to urban overheating is the urban heat island (UHI) formed due to increased urbanization. The adverse effects of UHI on building energy use are substantial and well documented. However, such effects are typically demonstrated through numerical simulations which are susceptible to modeling uncertainties and lack of validation resulting in a pressing research gap. Here, for the first time, we conduct a large-scale assessment to demonstrate the devastating impact of UHI on building energy consumption using real building energy use data. We find empirical evidence correlating UHI with building energy use; changes in average UHI intensity of 0.5 K correspond to an increase in monthly cooling energy consumption in a range of 0.17 kWh/m²-1.84 kWh/m². The study validates theoretical evidence on the impact of UHI on building energy and proposes a highly innovative methodology to assess the impact of overheating on the energy balance of cities.

Colorful low-emissivity paints for space heating and cooling energy savings.

Project description:Space heating and cooling consume ~13% of global energy every year. The development of advanced materials that promote energy savings in heating and cooling is gaining increasing attention. To thermally isolate the space of concern and minimize the heat exchange with the outside environment has been recognized as one effective solution. To this end, here, we develop a universal category of colorful low-emissivity paints to form bilayer coatings consisting of an infrared (IR)-reflective bottom layer and an IR-transparent top layer in colors. The colorful visual appearance ensures the aesthetical effect comparable to conventional paints. High mid-infrared reflectance (up to ~80%) is achieved, which is more than 10 times as conventional paints in the same colors, efficiently reducing both heat gain and loss from/to the outside environment. The high near-IR reflectance also benefits reducing solar heat gain in hot days. The advantageous features of these paints strike a balance between energy savings and penalties for heating and cooling throughout the year, providing a comprehensive year-round energy-saving solution adaptable to a wide variety of climatic zones. Taking a typical midrise apartment building as an example, the application of our colorful low-emissivity paints can realize positive heating, ventilation, and air conditioning energy saving, up to 27.24 MJ/m2/y (corresponding to the 7.4% saving ratio). Moreover, the versatility of the paint, along with its applicability to diverse surfaces of various shapes and materials, makes the paints extensively useful in a range of scenarios, including building envelopes, transportation, and storage.

How Does Income Heterogeneity Affect Future Perspectives on Food Consumption? Empirical Evidence from Urban China.

Project description:China is undergoing a rapid dietary transition as well as a changing income distribution. In this paper, we examine the impacts of income heterogeneity on the prediction of food consumption using a dataset that covered 22,210 urban households in China's 6 provinces. The two-stage Exact Affine Stone Index Implicit Marshallian Demand System (EASI demand system) model, which deals with the problem of censoring and endogeneity, is applied to estimate demand elasticity across income strata. Additionally, a dynamic simulation method considering income heterogeneity is conducted to predict future food consumption trends. The results reveal that income elasticity follows a decreasing trend with income growth. Furthermore, the results show that the consumption of major food items in the 15th period will increase by 7.9% to 42.0% over the base period. The growth potential of low-income groups is significantly higher than that of middle- and high-income groups. However, the prediction results may be overestimated if the differences in consumer behavior across income groups and the dynamic simulation procedure are not taken into account. Our study indicates that the consumption features of different income groups need to be included in food consumption forecasts. Moreover, the government should formulate food policies for different income groups to promote a sustainable food system transformation.

A Superhydrophobic Dual-Mode Film for Energy-Free Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating.

Project description:Traditional electric cooling in summer and coal heating in winter consume a huge amount of energy and lead to a greenhouse effect. Herein, we developed an energy-free dual-mode superhydrophobic film, which consists of a white side with porous coating of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene/SiO2 for radiative cooling and a black side with nanocomposite coating of carbon nanotubes/polydimethylsiloxane for solar heating. In the cooling mode with the white side, the film achieved a high sunlight reflection of 94% and a strong long-wave infrared emission of 92% in the range of 8-13 μm to contribute to a temperature drop of ∼11 °C. In the heating mode with the black side, the film achieved a high solar absorption of 98% to induce heating to raise the air temperature beneath by ΔT of ∼35.6 °C. Importantly, both sides of the film are superhydrophobic with a contact angle over 165° and a sliding angle near 0°, showing typical self-cleaning effects, which defend the surfaces from outdoor contamination, thus conducive to long-term cooling and heating. This dual-mode film shows great potential in outdoor applications as coverings for both cooling in hot summer and heating in winter without an energy input.

Empirical evidence for a recent slowdown in irrigation-induced cooling.

Project description:Understanding the influence of past land use changes on climate is needed to improve regional projections of future climate change and inform debates about the tradeoffs associated with land use decisions. The effects of rapid expansion of irrigated area in the 20th century has remained unclear relative to other land use changes, such as urbanization, that affected a similar total land area. Using spatial and temporal variations in temperature and irrigation extent observed in California, we show that irrigation expansion has had a large cooling effect on summertime average daily daytime temperatures (-0.14 degrees C to -0.25 degrees C per decade), which corresponds to an estimated cooling of -1.8 degrees C to -3.2 degrees C since the introduction of irrigation practices. Irrigation has negligible effects on nighttime temperatures, leading to a net cooling effect of irrigation on climate (-0.06 degrees C to -0.19 degrees C per decade). Stabilization of irrigated area has occurred in California since 1980 and is expected in the near future for many irrigated regions. The suppression of past human-induced greenhouse warming by increased irrigation is therefore likely to slow in the future, and a potential decrease in irrigation may even contribute to a more rapid warming. Changes in irrigation alone are not expected to influence broad-scale temperatures, but they may introduce large uncertainties in climate projections for irrigated agricultural regions, which provide approximately 40% of global food production.

Urban residential building stock synthetic datasets for building energy performance analysis.

Project description:The urban building stock dataset consists of synthetic input and output data for the energy simulation of one million buildings. The dataset consists of four different residential types, namely: terraced, detached, semi-detached, and bungalow. Constructing this buildings dataset requires conversion, categorization, extraction, and analytical processes. The dataset (in .csv) format comprises 19 input parameters, including advanced features such as HVAC system parameters, building fabric (walls, roofs, floors, door, and windows) U-values, and renewable system parameters. The primary output parameter in the dataset is Energy Use Intensity (EUI in kWh/(m2*year)), along with Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) labels categorized on an A to G rating scale. Additionally, the dataset contains end-use demand output parameters for heating and lighting, which are crucial output parameters. jEPlus, a parametric tool, is coupled with EnergyPlus and DesignBuilder templates to facilitate physics-based parametric simulations for generating the dataset. The dataset can be a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to enhance sustainability and efficiency in urban building environments. Furthermore, dataset holds immense potential for future research in the field of building energy analysis and modeling.

Large uncertainties in trends of energy demand for heating and cooling under climate change.

Project description:The energy demand for heating and cooling buildings is changing with global warming. Using proxies of climate-driven energy demand based on the heating and cooling Degree-Days methodology applied to thirty global climate model simulations, we show that, over all continental areas, the climate-driven energy demand trends for heating and cooling were weak, changing by less than 10% from 1950 to 1990, but become stronger from 1990 to 2030, changing by more than 10%. With the multi-model mean, the increasing trends in cooling energy demand are more pronounced than the decreasing trends in heating. The changes in cooling, however, are highly variable depending on individual simulations, ranging from a few to several hundred percent in most of the densely populated mid-latitude areas. This work presents an example of the challenges that accompany future energy demand quantification as a result of the uncertainty in the projected climate.

Rotational Doppler cooling and heating.

Project description:Doppler cooling is a widely used technique to laser cool atoms, molecules, and nanoparticles by exploiting the Doppler shift associated with translational motion. The rotational Doppler effect arising from rotational coordinate transformation should similarly enable optical manipulation of the rotational motion of nanosystems. Here, we show that rotational Doppler cooling and heating (RDC and RDH) effects embody rich and unexplored physics, including an unexpected strong dependence on particle morphology. For geometrically constrained particles, cooling and heating are observed at red- or blue-detuned laser frequencies relative to particle resonances. In contrast, for nanosystems that can be modeled as solid particles, RDH appears close to resonant illumination, while detuned frequencies produce cooling of rotation. We further predict that RDH can lead to optomechanical spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, where an achiral particle under linearly polarized illumination starts spontaneously rotating. Our results open up new exciting possibilities to control the rotational motion of nanosystems.

Integration of daytime radiative cooling and solar heating for year-round energy saving in buildings.

Project description:The heating and cooling energy consumption of buildings accounts for about 15% of national total energy consumption in the United States. In response to this challenge, many promising technologies with minimum carbon footprint have been proposed. However, most of the approaches are static and monofunctional, which can only reduce building energy consumption in certain conditions and climate zones. Here, we demonstrate a dual-mode device with electrostatically-controlled thermal contact conductance, which can achieve up to 71.6 W/m2 of cooling power density and up to 643.4 W/m2 of heating power density (over 93% of solar energy utilized) because of the suppression of thermal contact resistance and the engineering of surface morphology and optical property. Building energy simulation shows our dual-mode device, if widely deployed in the United States, can save 19.2% heating and cooling energy, which is 1.7 times higher than cooling-only and 2.2 times higher than heating-only approaches.

Energy assessment of BIPV system in code-compliant residential building in cooling-dominated climates.

Project description:This study investigates the effects of climate and geographical location on the building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). An existing residential building was simulated by using IES-VE software for five different climatic zones of Saudi Arabia, which was in accordance with ASHRAE Standard 169-2021 and Saudi Building Codes (SBC) 601/ 602. The results showed that the annual energy production of rooftop PV systems ranged from 49,810.29 kWh to 60,204.29 kWh, with cities such as Najran and Tabuk having higher energy production due to higher solar radiation and better performance of PV systems. The average annual global radiation ranged from 188.15 kWh/m2 to 212.52 kWh/m2, with cities such as Najran and Tabuk having the highest radiation levels. The study found that solar radiation, temperature, cloud cover and regional climate patterns significantly influence monthly energy generation, with cities closer to the equator experiencing higher solar radiation and longer daylight hours. The study also highlighted the importance of considering angular, spectral, temperature and low radiation losses, which range from 2.47% to 2.71%, 0.84% to 1.36% and 8% to 15.4%, respectively for the studies locations. This study would shed light on the impact of climate and location on the performance of PV systems and would therefore be of great interest to policy makers, energy planners and solar industry professionals to make informed decisions about the deployment of rooftop PV systems in different climate regions meet. Enabling a more sustainable energy strategy and a successful transition to a low-carbon future.

The influence of environmental diplomacy, economic determinants and renewable energy consumption on environmental degradation: Empirical evidence of G20 countries.

Project description:This study examines how various environmental and economic variables contribute to environmental degradation. Industrialization, trade openness, and foreign direct investment are among the variables, as are environmental diplomacy, environmental diplomacy secure, and renewable energy consumption. Therefore, the data covers the years 1991-2020, and our sample includes all 19 countries and two groups (the European Union and the African Union). The research used the Pesaran CD test to determine cross-section dependency, CIPS and CADF test to determine stationarity, the Wald test for hetrodcedasasticity and the Wooldridge test for autocorrelation; therefore, VIF for multicollinearity, Durbin and Hausman to analyze the endogeneity. It also employed Westerlund's cointegration test to ensure cross-sectional dependence, Wald test for group-wise heteroscedasticity, Wooldridge test for autocorrelation, VIF for multicollinearity, and Durbin and Hausman for endogeneity. The two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) is used to estimate the results and confirm the relationship between independent variables (Industrialization, trade openness, FDI, environmental diplomacy, secure environmental diplomacy, and renewable energy) and dependent variables (Environmental Degradation) in G20 countries. Therefore, Industrialization, trade openness, foreign direct investment, ecological diplomacy, and renewable energy consumption significantly impact ecological degradation. Environmental diplomacy is crucial to combat degradation and stimulate global collaboration. G20 nations enact strict environmental restrictions to tackle climate change and encourage economic growth.
