ABSTRACT: Purpose
To assess the general knowledge of and attitude to various common eye conditions in children among pediatricians in north Jordan.Methods
This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. An exploratory questionnaire was developed by the research team to collect the necessary qualitative information.Results
In total, 48 pediatricians participated in the study. Around two-thirds performed eye examinations in children; however, only 10.4% (n = 5) carried out eye exams routinely as part of every child's health visit. The most common test done was assessment of red reflex, which was performed by only 60.4% (n = 29) of responders. Almost all participants (95.8%, n = 46) recognized the risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The majority of pediatricians (n = 46, 95.8%) would immediately refer a child with suspected glaucoma to an ophthalmologist. In regard to leukocoria, the majority recognized cataract (n = 38, 79.2%) and retinoblastoma (n = 40, 83.3%) as major causes of this condition. Almost all pediatricians (n = 46, 95.8%) would immediately refer a child with leukocoria to an ophthalmologist. On the subject of refractive errors, only 62.5% (n = 30) of physicians confirmed that refractive errors could occur in children of any age and that they may need glasses. Nonetheless, 70.8% (n = 34) stated that refractive errors could be a cause of squint in children. Amblyopia and underlying central causes of squint were a major concern for most responders with 68.8% (n = 33) and 75% (n = 36), respectively.Conclusion
Although the knowledge of and attitude to eye disease among pediatricians were at a satisfactory level, the degree of collaboration with ophthalmologists is limited. More workshops need to be held for pediatricians.

Project description:BackgroundEye examination and vision assessment are vital for the detection of conditions that result in blindness. Childhood blindness seriously impacts the development, education, and future employment opportunities of affected children. Pediatricians' knowledge of eye diseases is critical for the prevention of blindness through early diagnosis, allowing proper treatment and identification of conditions requiring referral to an ophthalmologist to preserve or restore vision. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of Ethiopian pediatricians concerning childhood eye diseases.MethodsWe carried out a cross-sectional descriptive study of pediatricians working in various hospitals and clinics in Ethiopia. Participants were selected via a convenient sampling technique. Data were collected using both closed and open-ended semi-structured questionnaires. Responses were entered into EpiData 3.1 and transferred to SPSS version 21.0 software for analysis.ResultsA total of 79 pediatricians participated in the study. Our findings showed that the attitude of all but 2 participants towards improving the management of childhood eye diseases was positive, even though this was not reflected in actual knowledge or practice. Even though attitudes were positive, knowledge was often poor and practice inadequate owing to barriers such as inadequate undergraduate training, lack of ophthalmology options during pediatric residency, and unavailability of ophthalmic equipment.ConclusionsParticipants' attitudes towards improving treatment for childhood eye diseases are positive, but their insufficient knowledge of eye diseases makes their practice poor in this respect.

Project description:BackgroundPediatricians are in an ideal position to advise families about the prevention and management of oral diseases in children. The objective of the study was to determine knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding the prevention of oral diseases among pediatricians in Italy.MethodsA systematic random sample of 1000 pediatricians received a questionnaire on socio-demographic and practice characteristics; knowledge on risk factors; attitude and practices towards the prevention of oral diseases.ResultsA total of 507 pediatricians participated. More than half knew the main risk factors for oral diseases and this knowledge was higher in primary care pediatricians (p = 0.007), in those with a higher number of hours worked per week (p = 0.012), and who believed that oral diseases may be prevented (p = 0.017). Pediatricians with higher knowledge about the main risk factors (p = 0.006) believe that they have an important role in preventing oral diseases and that they can perform an oral examination. Almost all (89%) prescribed fluoride supplements and those younger (p = 0.016), with a higher number of patients seen in workday (p = 0.001), with longer practice activity (p = 0.004), those who believe that fluoride is effective in preventing caries (p < 0.0001), and who learned about prevention from scientific sources (p = 0.002) were more likely to prescribe fluoride. One-fourth and 40.6% provides and recommends a dental visit once a year and primary care pediatricians (p = 0.014) and those who believed that routine visit is important in preventing oral diseases (p < 0.0001) were more likely to recommend a dental visit once a year.ConclusionThe results showed a lack of knowledge among pediatricians although almost all believed that they had an important responsibility in preventing oral diseases and provided an oral examination.

Project description:Background ?Religious and sociocultural beliefs influence the nature of treatment and care received by people with epilepsy. Objective ?This study aimed to study knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) among epilepsy patients in north India. Materials and Methods ?In this study, 201 patients attending the outpatient and inpatient services of the neurology department of Sir Sunderlal Hospital, Banaras Hindu University, were asked to fill a questionnaire comprising 25 questions assessing the KAPs in English or Hindi, whichever the patient was proficient with. The same questionnaire was also given to 200 patients without epilepsy for the control group. Responses were recorded as yes/no/do not know. Results ?Approximately, 67% of the patients consisted of a young population, of which 64.7% were males and 35.3% were females. Around 25.9% of patients had studied up to 10th class, 96.5% of patients had heard of epilepsy, and 89.05% thought it was treatable by modern drugs. Out of all patients, 80.1% of patients believed that epilepsy was not contagious, 87.6% believed that they can work, 93.5% believed that they can marry, 66.5% did not feel discriminated by batchmates, and 78.5% did not feel discriminated by teachers. Of all patients, 41.8% said that they would disclose the epileptic condition of their daughters before marriage and 96.01% knew epilepsy patients should be taken to hospital. Conclusion ?Poor knowledge, negative attitude, and malpractices regarding epilepsy are still prevalent in North India. Epilepsy patients have better knowledge than normal people about this disease. There is still a need to educate people about epilepsy.

Project description:A diabetes foot ulcer is the commonest non-traumatic reason for the amputation of the lower extremities. All adults with diabetes should undergo comprehensive foot evaluation at least annually, but for high-risk individuals with diabetes more frequently by a health care provider and daily by the people themselves. Nurses' knowledge and attitude are fundamental to conduct a diabetes foot risk assessment and provide foot care for known diabetes person. Knowledge and attitude of nurses about the assessment and risk, identification of diabetes foot are not well studied in Ethiopia, especially in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess nurses' knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot ulcer in Bahir Dar, North West Ethiopia. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Bahir Dar city administration hospitals from January 1st to 5th, 2019. The study participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Nurses' level of knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot ulcer assessment and management determined by using multiple-choice questions of nurse's knowledge and attitude questionnaires. The association between the independent and dependent variables was assessed. In this study, the overall proportions of nurses' knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot assessment and management were 54.4% and 43.3% respectively. Age less than 30 years old (AOR = 2.15, 95%CI: 1.10, 4.19; P = 0.025), the nurse who graduates from a governmental institution (AOR = 3.05, 95% CI: 1.64, 5.69; P < 0.001) and use the internet as a source of knowledge (AOR = 0.55, 95%CI: 0.31, 0.96; P = 0.035) was significantly associated with nurses' knowledge towards diabetes foot care. Age less than 30 years old (AOR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.16, 3.35; P = 0.012)and the nurse level of qualification (AOR = 0.39, 95% CI: 0.20, 0.78; P = 0.007)were significantly associated with nurses' level of attitude towards diabetes foot care. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the important gaps in nurses' knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot care. Nurses' insufficient knowledge and non-favorable attitude towards diabetes foot care compromise health care standard diabetes care. Therefore, a comprehensive revision of nursing curricula across local tertiary learning institutes required qualified instructors and a strengthened regulatory body (especially private ones), and validated source of information for allowing nurses to update their knowledge is warranted.

Project description:Increasing enthusiasm for clinical pharmacogenetic testing and the availability of pharmacogenetic-based guidelines indicate that pediatricians will increasingly be expected to interpret and apply pharmacogenetic test results into medical care. Previous studies have identified a lack of knowledge on pharmacogenetics across many physician specialties; however, this has not been systematically assessed among pediatricians. To evaluate pediatrician knowledge, attitude, and educational interest in pharmacogenetics, we surveyed physician cohorts from both the United States (U.S.) and Japan. A total of 282 pediatricians (210 from the U.S. and 72 from Japan) participated in an anonymous survey (online or hardcopy) on pharmacogenetics knowledge, perception, and education. Over 50% of all respondents had >10 years of clinical experience and >75% had some prior education in genetics. However, <10% felt they were familiar with pharmacogenetics, which was very consistent with <20% of the U.S. pediatricians correctly responding to a codeine/CYP2D6 pharmacogenetics knowledge question and <10% of U.S. pediatricians being aware of the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC). Despite being generally unfamiliar with pharmacogenetics, >80% of all respondents indicated that implementation of clinical pharmacogenetic testing will improve efficacy and safety, and that pediatricians should be capable of applying this testing to their practice. Moreover, the majority (83.1%) were interested in educational opportunities on pharmacogenetics, particularly on result interpretation and therapeutic recommendations. Taken together, these data indicate that although practical knowledge of pharmacogenetics among pediatricians in the U.S. and Japan is currently very low, their interest in clinical pharmacogenetics and related education is high, which will likely facilitate future implementation.

Project description:Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a crucial health issue and the most common nutritional deficiency-related problem that affects many adolescents worldwide. Considering its link with the lack of appropriate knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP), it could be preventable. The aims of this study were (1) assessing hemoglobin levels of female adolescent students, (2) examining their knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding IDA, and (3) evaluating the effect of a nutrition education program on the same. A quasi-experimental design (pretest-posttest control group) involving 363 students from four public secondary schools in Jordan was used. Two schools formed the intervention group (n = 194) and two formed the control group (n = 169). Blood tests for hemoglobin levels and self-report questionnaires were the measures employed. A month-long nutrition education program was conducted with the intervention group. The results revealed that 44.5% of the sample had mild anemia, and 10% had moderate anemia. In terms of knowledge, attitude, and practice, 52.4% exhibited adequate knowledge, 45% engaged in healthy practices, and 42.7% had a positive attitude toward IDA. The intervention group's total KAP scores were significantly higher than the control group (p ≤ .05) post-program. Additionally, the total KAP scores within the intervention group showed significant increase from pre- to post-test (p ≤ .05). It can be concluded that structured educational intervention effectively improves knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding IDA among adolescent females. Health care professionals must not only be oriented about this health problem among this age group, but also be supported to enable their intervention within a school setting.

Project description:BackgroundThe present study aimed to address the suspected deficiency in the level of understanding of HIV/AIDS among clinical and pre clinical dental students at the University of Jordan. In this cross-sectional study, structured questionnaires were distributed to fifth year dental students (n = 121) and to third year dental students (n = 144) in the academic year 2008/2009.FindingsSignificantly higher percentage of fifth-year students compared to third-year students felt that the teaching they received on cross-infection precautions and barrier dentistry was adequate (P < 0.001). Majority (84.2%) of fifth-year students were aware that individual carrying anti-HIV antibodies to be an HIV carrier, only 57.7% of third-year students were aware of this fact (P < 0.001). Majority recognized the association between Kaposi sarcoma, oral candidiasis and hairy leukoplakia with HIV/AIDS but knowledge of the association between HIV/AIDS with less frequent lesions was inadequate.Significantly higher proportion of third-year students compared to fifth-year (39.2% vs. 26.3%) thought that HIV patients should be referred to other centers or support groups for treatment (P = 0.04).ConclusionsThe level of knowledge of Jordanian dental students about HIV and AIDS was generally acceptable; there were inadequacies, however, in their understanding regarding some aspects of AIDS epidemic which demands that dental school curriculum needs some improvement.

Project description:ObjectiveThere is limited literature on the knowledge, attitude, and perceptions (KAP) of botulinum toxin (BoNT) treatment among patients and caregivers. The objective of this study was to assess the KAP in patients undergoing BoNT treatment for movement disorders.MethodsOne hundred patients with movement disorders from National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Hospital in Bengaluru, South India, were recruited. The patients underwent demographic, clinical, and Patient Knowledge Questionnaire on Botulinum Toxin Use in Movement Disorders (PKQ-BMD)-based evaluations.ResultsThe mean age of patients at the time of presentation was 47.97 ± 14.19 years (range, 12-79). Of all the patients, 26 (28%) patients were anxious, and 86% of these patients were reassured after appropriate counseling. There were 83 (89%) patients who found BoNT to be a costlier option. Education and previous Internet searches influenced positive performance in the "knowledge" domain and overall PKQ-BMD scores. The "number of injections" was also positively correlated with KAP performance.ConclusionThis study showed that knowledge and perceptions about BoNT treatment need to be further improved. Wider availability of the Internet has provided a positive impact on patients' and carers' KAP. Internet-based information, higher educational qualifications of the patients, and a higher number of BoNT injection sessions are the most important predictors of satisfactory KAP related to BoNT injection treatment in patients with movement disorders.

Project description:BackgroundScabies is one of the prevalent dermatological conditions, accounting for a substantial proportion of skin diseases in developing countries. It represents a significant health challenge when an outbreak appears in homecare and refugee camps as it may lead to enormous morbidity and high treatment costs. Because Scabies can be easily prevented through education, the purpose of this study was to assess the impact of socio-demographic factors on the level of knowledge, attitude, and practices among Syrian refugees in Jordan's northern region.MethodsA prospective cross-sectional study was conducted among Syrian refugees attending primary health centers in northern Jordan, Ramtha, Mafraq, and Irbid, from February 2021 to May 2021. The targeted population was adult Syrian refugees above the age of 18. Two thousand participants were included in this study using simple random selection. The study questionnaire included socio-demographic characteristics and knowledge questions such as hearing about Scabies, causes of Scabies, signs and symptoms of Scabies, and its way of transmission. The data was analyzed using (SPSS) version 25.ResultsFemales with a mean age of 37.9 years old comprised the majority of the participants. The majority of the participants were married and had intermediate levels of education. The knowledge about Scabies lacked among the majority of the respondents (N = 1259); 321 respondents had moderate knowledge, while only 650 had good knowledge. A statistically significant association was found between knowledge scores and all demographic characteristics, including gender, marital status, income, and educational level.ConclusionThe general knowledge about Scabies among Syrian refugees is relatively low, with 1259 out of 2000 participants having a bad knowledge score. Moreover, the level of knowledge, attitude, and practices toward Scabies is highly affected by the demographic factors of the Syrian refugees' Health education for refugees is needed to improve their knowledge and help implement prevention programs.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Cervical cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. Nearly 83% of the world's new cases and 85% of all cervical cancer-related deaths occur in developing countries. It is primarily caused by human papilloma virus (HPV); a sexually transmitted pathogen that could be prevented with safe sexual practice and using vaccines among others. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitude of reproductive age group women towards cervical cancer and its prevention in Gondar town. METHODS:A descriptive community based cross-sectional study was carried out. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was employed for data collection. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select the study participants. Descriptive statistics like frequency, mean and percentage were computed using SPSS version 20 software program. RESULTS:Seven hundred and seventy women (n?=?770) participated with a response rate of 100%. More than half, (65.1%) of the participants claim hearing of cervical cancer. However, majority (>?80%) of them lack knowledge that HPV is a causative agent of cervical cancer which is extremely worrying as the most important way to prevent cervical cancer is blocking HPV infection. Of those who had heard of it, only 107 (21.4%) said they have heard about Pap smear test. From them, less than half, 47 (43.9%) said that an apparently healthy woman should undergo the test at least three times in her life. This means in addition to the lack of information about the test, majority of those who had heard about it didn't know how many times they should have the test in their life. Overall, only 153 (19.87%) of the participants were found having a good knowledge of cervical cancer and its prevention. CONCLUSION:The overall knowledge of women towards cervical cancer was inadequate. On the other hand, those who had heard about it had a somewhat encouraging attitude. Mass media was the major source of information. But, any public health problem cannot be solved in isolation. Hence, initiating large-scale awareness campaigns is recommended.
