Strength enhancement of concrete using incinerated agricultural waste as supplementary cement materials.

ABSTRACT: The potassium (K) and sodium (Na) elements in banana are needed for hydration reaction that can enhance the strength properties of concrete. This research aims (a) to determine the material engineering properties of banana skin ash (BSA) and concrete containing BSA, (b) to measure the strength enhancement of concrete due to BSA, and (c) to identify optimal application of BSA as supplementary cement materials (SCM) in concrete. The BSA characterization were assessed through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Blaine's air permeability. The workability, compressive strength, and microstructures of concrete containing BSA were analysed using slump test, universal testing machine (UTM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). A total of 15 oxides and 19 non-oxides elements were identified in BSA with K (43.1%) the highest and Na was not detected. At 20 g of mass, the BSA had a higher bulk density (198.43 ± 0.00 cm³) than ordinary Portland cement (OPC) (36.32 ± 0.00 cm³) indicating availability of large surface area for water absorption. The concrete workability was reduced with the presence of BSA (0% BSA: > 100 mm, 1% BSA: 19 ± 1.0 mm, 2%: 15 ± 0.0 mm, 3% BSA: 10 ± 0.0 mm). The compressive strength increased with the number of curing days. The concrete microstructures were improved; interfacial transition zones (ITZ) decreased with an increase of BSA. The optimal percentage of BSA obtained was at 1.25%. The established model showed significant model terms (Sum of Squares = 260.60, F value = 69.84) with probability of 0.01% for the F-value to occur due to noise. The established model is useful for application in construction industries.

Project description:The aim of this study was to develop new sulfur-copolymer concrete composites using waste compounds that have good mechanical characteristics and show a resistance to biocorrosion. The comonomers used to synthesize the sulfur-organic copolymers were-90 wt. % sulfur; 5 wt. % dicyclopentadiene (DCPD); 5 wt. % organic monomers, styrene (SDS), 1-decene (SDD), turpentine (SDT), and furfural (SDF). The concrete composites based on sulfur-organic copolymers were filled with aggregates, sand, gravel, as well as additives and industrial waste such as fly ash or phosphogypsum. The sulfur-organic copolymers were found to be chemically stable (softening temperature, thermal stability, melting temperature, amount of recrystallized sulfur, and shore D hardness). Partial replacement of DCPD with other organic comonomers did not change the thermal stability markedly but did make the copolymers more elastic. However, the materials became significantly stiffer after repeated melting. All the tested copolymers were found to be resistant to microbial corrosion. The highest resistance was exhibited by the SDS-containing polymer, while the SDF polymer exhibited the greatest change due to the activity of the microorganisms (FTIR analysis and sulfur crystallization). The concrete composites with sulfur-organic copolymers containing DCPD, SDS, SDF, fly ash, and phosphogypsum were mechanically resistant to compression and stretching, had low water absorbance, and were resistant to factors, such as temperature and salt. Resistance to freezing and thawing (150 cycles) was not confirmed. The concrete composites with sulfur-organic copolymers showed resistance to bacterial growth and acid activity during 8 weeks of incubation with microorganisms. No significant structural changes were observed in the SDS composites after incubation with bacteria, whereas composites containing SDF showed slight changes (FTIR and microscopic analysis). The concrete composite containing sulfur, DCPD, SDS, sand, gravel, and fly ash was the most resistant to microbiological corrosion, based on the metabolic activity of the bacteria and the production of ergosterol by the molds after eight weeks of incubation. It was found that Thiobacillus thioparus was the first of the acidifying bacteria to colonize the sulfur concrete, decreasing the pH of the environment. The molds Penicillium chrysogenum, Aspergillus versicolor and Cladosporium herbarum were able to grow on the surface of the tested composites only in the presence of an organic carbon source (glucose). During incubation, they produced organic acids and acidified the environment. However, no morphological changes in the concretes were observed suggesting that sulfur-organic copolymers containing styrene could be used as engineering materials or be applied as binders in sulfur-concretes.

Project description:Nitrogen pollution in aquaculture wastewater can pose a significant health and environmental risk if not removed before wastewater is discharged. Biological denitrification uses external carbon sources to remove nitrogen from wastewater; however, these carbon sources are often expensive and require significant energy. In this study, we investigated how six types of agricultural waste can be used as solid carbon sources in biological denitrification. Banana stalk (BS), loofah sponge (LS), sorghum stalk (SS), sweet potato stalk (SPS), watermelon skins (WS) and wheat husk (WH) were studied to determine their capacity to release carbon and improve denitrification efficiency. The results of batch experiments showed that all six agricultural wastes had excellent carbon release capacities, with cumulative chemical oxygen demands of 37.74-535.68 mg/g. During the 168-h reaction, the carbon release process followed the second-order kinetic equation and Ritger-Peppas equation, while carbon release occurred via diffusion. The kinetic equation fitting, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that LS had the lowest cm and the maximum t1/2 values and only suffered a moderate degree of hydrolysis. It also had the lowest pollutant release rate and cumulative chemical oxygen demand, as well as the most efficient removal of total phosphorous (TP) and total nitrogen (TN). Therefore, we concluded that LS has the lowest potential risk of excess carbon release and capacity for long-lasting and stable carbon release. The WS leachate had the highest TN contents, while the SPS leachate had the highest TP content. In the 181-h denitrification reaction, all six agricultural wastes completely removed nitrate and nitrite; however, SS had the highest denitrification rate, followed by LS, WH, BS, SPS, and WS (2.16, 1.35, 1.35, 1.34, 1.34, and 1.01 mg/(L·h), respectively). The denitrification process followed a zero-order and first-order kinetic equation. These results provide theoretical guidance for effectively selecting agricultural waste as a solid carbon source and improving the denitrification efficiency of aquaculture wastewater treatment.

Project description:In Europe, the use of wastes in the cement and construction industry follows the assumptions of sustainability and the idea of circular economy. At present, it is observed that cement plants introduce wastes to the cement in the form of so-called mineral additives. The most often used mineral additives are: fly ash with silica fume, granulated blast furnace slag and silica fume. The use of mineral additives in the cement is related to the fact that the use of the most expensive component of cement-Portland cement clinker-is limited. The purpose of the article is a preliminary evaluation of the suitability of slag from the municipal solid waste incineration plant for its use as a replacement of cement. In this article, slag from the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) replaces cement in the quantity of 30%, and presents the content of oxides and elements of slag from the MSWI. The obtained results are compared to the requirements that the crushed and granulated blast furnace slag need to meet to be suitable for use as an additive of type II to the concrete. The conducted analyses confirmed that the tested slag meets the requirements for the granulated blast furnace slag as an additive to the concrete in the following parameters: CaO ? 18.0%, SO3 ? 2.5% and Cl ? 0.1%. At the same time, mechanical features were tested of the designed mortars which consisted of a mixture of Portland cement (CEM I) with 30% of slag admixture. The designed mortar after 28 days of maturing reached a compressive strength of 32.0 MPa, and bending strength of 4.0 MPa. When compared to the milled granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), the obtained values are slightly lower. Furthermore, the hardened mortars were subject to a leachability test to check the impact on the environment. Test results showed that the aqueous extracts from mixtures with 30% of slag admixtures slightly exceed the limits and do not pose a sufficiant threat to the environment as to eliminate the MSWI slag from economical use.
