Project description:The employment of the new Schiff base ligand 2-[(4-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)methyl]phenol (H2L) bearing O2N donors for the preparation of a novel Co6 cluster is reported. The hexanuclear cobalt complex, namely, di-μ2-acetatotetrakis{μ2-2-[(4-chloro-2-oxidobenzylideneamino)methyl]phenolato}tetra-μ3-methanolato-tetracobalt(II)dicobalt(III), [CoII4CoIII2(C14H10ClNO2)4(CH3COO)2(CH3O)4], was obtained using Co(CH3COO)2·4H2O and H2L as starting materials in MeOH under solvothermal conditions. The six metal ions are linked together by the μ3-O atoms of four deprotonated MeOH molecules, two CH3COO- units and six phenolate O atoms of four L2- ligands to form a defect disk-shaped topology. DC magnetic susceptibility investigations revealed the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions in the Co6 cluster.

Project description:The reaction of [Cp2 Mo2 (CO)4 (?,?2:2 -E2 )] (A: E=P, B: E=As, Cp=C5 H5 ) with the WCA-containing CuI salts ([Cu(CH3 CN)4 ][Al{OC(CF3 )3 }4 ] (CuTEF, C), [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ][BF4 ] (D) and [Cu(CH3 CN)3.5 ][FAl{OC6 F10 (C6 F5 )}3 ] (CuFAl, E)) affords seven unprecedented coordination compounds. Depending on the E2 ligand complex, the counter anion of the copper salt and the stoichiometry, four dinuclear copper dimers and three trinuclear copper compounds are accessible. The latter complexes reveal first linear Cu3 arrays linked by E2 units (E=P, As) coordinated in an ?2:1:1 coordination mode. All compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. To define the nature of the Cu???Cu???Cu interactions, DFT calculations were performed.

Project description:Nollmotzite (IMA2017-100), Mg[UV(UVIO2)2F3O4](H2O)4, is a new uranium oxide fluoride mineral found in the Clara mine, Black Forest Mountains, Germany. Electron microprobe analysis provided the empirical formula (Mg1.06Cu0.02)Σ1.08[UV(UVIO2)2O3.85F3.15][(H2O)3.69(OH)0.31]Σ4.00 based on three U and 15 O + F atoms per formula unit. Nollmotzite is monoclinic, space group Cm, with a = 7.1015 (12) Å, b = 11.7489 (17) Å, c = 8.1954 (14) Å, β = 98.087 (14)°, V = 676.98 (19) Å3 and Z = 2. The crystal structure [twinned by reticular merohedry; refined to R = 0.0369 with GoF = 1.09 for 1527 unique observed reflections, I > 3σ(I)] is based upon [UV(UVIO2)2F3O4]2- sheets of β-U3O8 topology and contains an interlayer with MgF2(H2O)4 octahedra. Adjacent sheets are linked through F-Mg-F bonds, as well as via hydrogen bonds. The presence of fluorine and pentavalent uranium in the structure of nollmotzite has potentially important implications for the safe disposal of nuclear waste.

Project description:Triflate salts of trications [(bipy)2E]3+ ([6E][OTf]3) and [(tbbipy)2E]3+ ([6'E][OTf]3) (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, tbbipy = 4,4'-di- t butyl-2,2'-bipyridine; E = P, As, Sb, Bi) have been synthesized and comprehensively characterized. The unique molecular and electronic structures of this new class of complexes involving pnictogen Lewis acids has been assessed in the solid, solution and gas phases to reveal systematic variations in metric parameters, ligand lability and charge concentration. While the Lewis acidity of E3+ has the trend E = Bi < Sb < As < P as determined by gas-phase calculations and 1H NMR spectroscopy, the Lewis acidity of [6E]3+ has the trend E = P < As < Sb < Bi according to gas-phase calculations. Derivatives of [6'E][OTf]3 (E = P, As) are latent sources of E(OTf)3 as demonstrated by their reactions with dmap, which give the corresponding derivatives of [(dmap)3E][OTf]3. The highly oxidizing nature of P(OTf)3 and As(OTf)3 is evidenced in reactions of [6'E][OTf]3 (E = P, As) with phosphines, which give EI-containing monocations [(R3P)2E]1+ and oxidatively coupled dications [R3PPR3]2+, illustrating new P-P and P-As bond forming strategies. Cations [6'E]3+ (E = P, As) are C-H bond activating agents that dehydrogenate 1,4-cyclohexadiene, with higher activity observed for E = P. Combinations of [6'E]3+ and t Bu3P activate H2 and D2 under mild conditions, evidencing frustrated Lewis pair activity. Oxidation of [6'P][OTf]3 with SO2Cl2 gives [(tbbipy)2PCl2][OTf]3, containing a PV-trication, but there is no evidence of the analogous reaction with [6'As][OTf]3. The observations highlight new directions in the chemistry of highly charged cations and reveal a rich reactivity for p-block triflates E(OTf)3, which can be accessed through derivatives of [6E][OTf]3 and [6'E][OTf]3.

Project description:In our attempt to search for mixed alkaline-earth and transition metal arsenates, the title compound, barium dimanganese(II) bis-(arsenate), has been synthesized by employing a high-temperature RbCl flux. The crystal structure of BaMn2(AsO4)2 is made up of MnO6 octa-hedra and AsO4 tetra-hedra assembled by sharing corners and edges into infinite slabs with composition [Mn2(AsO4)2]2- that extend parallel to the ab plane. The barium cations reside between parallel slabs maintaining the inter-slab connectivity through coordination to eight oxygen anions. The layered anionic framework comprises weakly inter-acting [Mn4O18]28- tetra-meric units. In each tetra-mer, the manganese(II) cations are in a planar arrangement related by a center of inversion. Within the slabs, the tetra-meric units are separated from each other by 6.614 (2) Å (Mn⋯Mn distances). The title compound has isostructural analogues amongst synthetic SrM2(XO4)2 compounds with M = Ni, Co, and X = As, P.

Project description:In heterogeneous catalysis, olefin oligomerization is typically performed on immobilized transition metal ions, such as Ni2+ and Cr3+. Here we report that silica-supported, single site catalysts containing immobilized, main group Zn2+ and Ga3+ ion sites catalyze ethylene and propylene oligomerization to an equilibrium distribution of linear olefins with rates similar to that of Ni2+. The molecular weight distribution of products formed on Zn2+ is similar to Ni2+, while Ga3+ forms higher molecular weight olefins. In situ spectroscopic and computational studies suggest that oligomerization unexpectedly occurs by the Cossee-Arlman mechanism via metal hydride and metal alkyl intermediates formed during olefin insertion and β-hydride elimination elementary steps. Initiation of the catalytic cycle is proposed to occur by heterolytic C-H dissociation of ethylene, which occurs at about 250 °C where oligomerization is catalytically relevant. This work illuminates new chemistry for main group metal catalysts with potential for development of new oligomerization processes.

Project description:ε-LiVOPO4 is a promising multielectron cathode material for Li-ion batteries that can accommodate two electrons per vanadium, leading to higher energy densities. However, poor electronic conductivity and low lithium ion diffusivity currently result in low rate capability and poor cycle life. To enhance the electrochemical performance of ε-LiVOPO4, in this work, we optimized its solid-state synthesis route using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and applied a combination of high-energy ball-milling with electronically and ionically conductive coatings aiming to improve bulk and surface Li diffusion. We show that high-energy ball-milling, while reducing the particle size also introduces structural disorder, as evidenced by 7Li and 31P NMR and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We also show that a combination of electronically and ionically conductive coatings helps to utilize close to theoretical capacity for ε-LiVOPO4 at C/50 (1 C = 153 mA h g-1) and to enhance rate performance and capacity retention. The optimized ε-LiVOPO4/Li3VO4/acetylene black composite yields the high cycling capacity of 250 mA h g-1 at C/5 for over 70 cycles.

Project description:The Born-Oppenheimer approximation, assuming separable nuclear and electronic motion, is widely adopted for characterizing chemical reactions in a single electronic state. However, the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is omnipresent in chemistry, and a detailed understanding of the non-adiabatic dynamics is still incomplete. Here we investigate the non-adiabatic quenching of electronically excited OH(A2Σ+) molecules by H2 molecules using full-dimensional quantum dynamics calculations for zero total nuclear angular momentum using a high-quality diabatic-potential-energy matrix. Good agreement with experimental observations is found for the OH(X2Π) ro-vibrational distribution, and the non-adiabatic dynamics are shown to be controlled by stereodynamics, namely the relative orientation of the two reactants. The uncovering of a major (in)elastic channel, neglected in a previous analysis but confirmed by a recent experiment, resolves a long-standing experiment-theory disagreement concerning the branching ratio of the two electronic quenching channels.

Project description:Elucidating the top of the mammary epithelial cell hierarchy is highly important for understanding its regeneration capabilities and identifying target cells for transformation. Aiming for enriched mammary epithelial stem cell population, CD200highCD200R1high epithelial cells were identified. These cells represent ~50% of the mammary repopulating units (MRUs, CD49fhigh CD24med ) and termed MRUCD200/CD200R1. Gene expression of these cells was compared to all other MRU cells, termed MRUnot CD200/CD200R1, as well as individual CD200+ population (MRU-CD200R1-) and CD200R1+ population (MRU-CD200-).

Project description:Modular ?-borylacrylates have been validated as programmable, ambiphilic C3 -synthons in the cascade annulation of 2-halo-phenol derivatives to generate structurally and electronically diverse coumarins. Key to this [3+3] disconnection is the BPin unit which serves a dual purpose as both a traceless linker for C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ) coupling, and as a chromophore extension to enable inversion of the alkene geometry via selective energy transfer catalysis. Mild isomerisation is a pre-condition to access 3-substituted coumarins and provides a handle for divergence. The method is showcased in the synthesis of representative natural products that contain this venerable chemotype. Facile entry into ?-expanded estrone derivatives modified at the A-ring is disclosed to demonstrate the potential of the method in bioassay development or in drug repurposing.
