Articles That Use Artificial Intelligence for Ultrasound: A Reader's Guide.

ABSTRACT: Artificial intelligence (AI) transforms medical images into high-throughput mineable data. Machine learning algorithms, which can be designed for modeling for lesion detection, target segmentation, disease diagnosis, and prognosis prediction, have markedly promoted precision medicine for clinical decision support. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of articles, including articles on ultrasound with AI, published in only a few years. Given the unique properties of ultrasound that differentiate it from other imaging modalities, including real-time scanning, operator-dependence, and multi-modality, readers should pay additional attention to assessing studies that rely on ultrasound AI. This review offers the readers a targeted guide covering critical points that can be used to identify strong and underpowered ultrasound AI studies.

Project description:ImportanceLung ultrasound (LUS) aids in the diagnosis of patients with dyspnea, including those with cardiogenic pulmonary edema, but requires technical proficiency for image acquisition. Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) in guiding novice users to acquire high-quality cardiac ultrasound images, suggesting its potential for broader use in LUS.ObjectiveTo evaluate the ability of AI to guide acquisition of diagnostic-quality LUS images by trained health care professionals (THCPs).Design, setting, and participantsIn this multicenter diagnostic validation study conducted between July 2023 and December 2023, participants aged 21 years or older with shortness of breath recruited from 4 clinical sites underwent 2 ultrasound examinations: 1 examination by a THCP operator using Lung Guidance AI and the other by a trained LUS expert without AI. The THCPs (including medical assistants, respiratory therapists, and nurses) underwent standardized AI training for LUS acquisition before participation.InterventionsLung Guidance AI software uses deep learning algorithms guiding LUS image acquisition and B-line annotation. Using an 8-zone LUS protocol, the AI software automatically captures images of diagnostic quality.Main outcomes and measuresThe primary end point was the proportion of THCP-acquired examinations of diagnostic quality according to a panel of 5 masked expert LUS readers, who provided remote review and ground truth validation.ResultsThe intention-to-treat analysis included 176 participants (81 female participants [46.0%]; mean [SD] age, 63 [14] years; mean [SD] body mass index, 31 [8]). Overall, 98.3% (95% CI, 95.1%-99.4%) of THCP-acquired studies were of diagnostic quality, with no statistically significant difference in quality compared to LUS expert-acquired studies (difference, 1.7%; 95% CI, -1.6% to 5.0%).Conclusions and relevanceIn this multicenter validation study, THCPs with AI assistance achieved LUS images meeting diagnostic standards compared with LUS experts without AI. This technology could extend access to LUS to underserved areas lacking expert personnel.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05992324.

Project description:BackgroundArtificial intelligence (AI) has advanced substantially in recent years, transforming many industries and improving the way people live and work. In scientific research, AI can enhance the quality and efficiency of data analysis and publication. However, AI has also opened up the possibility of generating high-quality fraudulent papers that are difficult to detect, raising important questions about the integrity of scientific research and the trustworthiness of published papers.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate the capabilities of current AI language models in generating high-quality fraudulent medical articles. We hypothesized that modern AI models can create highly convincing fraudulent papers that can easily deceive readers and even experienced researchers.MethodsThis proof-of-concept study used ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) powered by the GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3) language model to generate a fraudulent scientific article related to neurosurgery. GPT-3 is a large language model developed by OpenAI that uses deep learning algorithms to generate human-like text in response to prompts given by users. The model was trained on a massive corpus of text from the internet and is capable of generating high-quality text in a variety of languages and on various topics. The authors posed questions and prompts to the model and refined them iteratively as the model generated the responses. The goal was to create a completely fabricated article including the abstract, introduction, material and methods, discussion, references, charts, etc. Once the article was generated, it was reviewed for accuracy and coherence by experts in the fields of neurosurgery, psychiatry, and statistics and compared to existing similar articles.ResultsThe study found that the AI language model can create a highly convincing fraudulent article that resembled a genuine scientific paper in terms of word usage, sentence structure, and overall composition. The AI-generated article included standard sections such as introduction, material and methods, results, and discussion, as well a data sheet. It consisted of 1992 words and 17 citations, and the whole process of article creation took approximately 1 hour without any special training of the human user. However, there were some concerns and specific mistakes identified in the generated article, specifically in the references.ConclusionsThe study demonstrates the potential of current AI language models to generate completely fabricated scientific articles. Although the papers look sophisticated and seemingly flawless, expert readers may identify semantic inaccuracies and errors upon closer inspection. We highlight the need for increased vigilance and better detection methods to combat the potential misuse of AI in scientific research. At the same time, it is important to recognize the potential benefits of using AI language models in genuine scientific writing and research, such as manuscript preparation and language editing.

Project description:BackgroundThe application of artificial intelligence (AI) in orthodontics and orthognathic surgery has gained significant attention in recent years. However, there is a lack of bibliometric reports that analyze the academic literature in this field to identify publishing and citation trends. By conducting an analysis of the top 100 most-cited articles on AI in orthodontics and orthognathic surgery, we aim to unveil popular research topics, key authors, institutions, countries, and journals in this area.MethodsA comprehensive search was conducted in the Web of Science (WOS) electronic database to identify the top 100 most-cited articles on AI in orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. Publication and citation data were obtained and further analyzed and visualized using R Biblioshiny. The key domains of the 100 articles were also identified.ResultsThe top 100 most-cited articles were published between 2005 and 2022, contributed by 458 authors, with an average citation count of 22.09. South Korea emerged as the leading contributor with the highest number of publications (28) and citations (595), followed by China (16, 373), and the United States (7, 248). Notably, six South Korean authors ranked among the top 10 contributors, and three South Korean institutions were listed as the most productive. International collaborations were predominantly observed between the United States, China, and South Korea. The main domains of the articles focused on automated imaging assessment (42%), aiding diagnosis and treatment planning (34%), and the assessment of growth and development (10%). Besides, a positive correlation was observed between the testing sample size and citation counts (P = 0.010), as well as between the time of publication and citation counts (P < 0.001).ConclusionsThe utilization of AI in orthodontics and orthognathic surgery has shown remarkable progress, particularly in the domains of imaging analysis, diagnosis and treatment planning, and growth and development assessment. This bibliometric analysis provides valuable insights into the top-cited articles and the trends of AI research in this field.
